about how their dad is very inventive and very creative like for example we were going on the family -- they told this story like this was to show the good side of their dad. you know what i am talking about. i am talking about the shamus story. right? our dad is such a creative guy and such a caring loving guy that we were going off on a family trip and there are five of us boys and mom and dad. and we had the station wagon and we had all of our bags. we were going off on vacation to canada and there wasn't enough room in the car for the dog. so dad, being the love dad that he is, he didn't put him in the kennel for two weeks? no. he put the kennel on top of the car and he put shamus in the canal on top of the car and strapped it down and off they went on a 12-hour ride. you have to think about that. 12 hours from boston to canada.

and you have the feeling maybe they are tilted right, fairness and accuracy in reporting proves that, in fact they are. this came out yesterday. they took a look at every one of the shows the big 4 or 5 on sunday. so this week, "meet the press" "face the nation" and "fox news sunday," the big 4, they followed them from june 2011 to february, twelve. okay? for those eight months, and here is what they found: liberal bias in the media? hardly. for their one on one guests and most of the big guests on one on one. right? on those four shows. 70% of them. 70% were republican. 86% of them, men, and 92% white.

so get it? it tilts right. it tilts male, and it tilts white, the sunday shows. seventy percent republicans, hardly liberal bias. the roundtables. they are more balanced? right? uh-uh. not necessarily. fair found, again, that 62% of the round table guests, table guests republicans out numbered democrats 282 to 164, and on those roundtables, 71% were male and 85% of them were white. so, you know, we know bob schieffer. bob schieffer once said the host of "face the nation" our job is to find interesting people from american life who have something to say and give them a chance to say it.

to the violence against women's act and the opposition to the pay equity act. is it an exaggeration to say there is a war on women? >> it's not. there has been a sustained legislative attack on women's rights and women's health over the past two years. if you just look at the numbers, just wildly dispropportionat amount of laws on the state and federal levels that roll back women's rights. >> haven't talked about what's happening at the state. >> right. >> what scott walker just did in wisconsin. right? >> right. secretly, overnight, signed four anti-women bills, one of them repealed the fair pay act in wisconsin and other ones aimed at defunding planned parenthood. >> i guess what republicans are counting on is that women are stupid or forgiving? >> right. >> one or the other. right? >> uh-huh. i mean, you know, they are coming out and their counter point is, well, the real war on women that more women than any

for so long. it's their panacea. the reality is that for instance they will talk about the corporate tax rates. we have the highest in the world but what do they actually pay? and it's a small fraction. this is a country where we should be able to work pay our fair share of taxes and vote. we have been drifting further from that where we have a big group of us who are paying taxes and a big group finding it harder to vote and a big group of us who are finding it hard to work and you have the very rich of this country who have no problem finding a job, who seem to have a real problem paying taxes it's time for us to get back to a country, at least as far as fairness that's like the country our grandparents grew up

we were talking about where he came from and where he is today and where barack obama is today. in the area of race relations, this country has made a lot of progress but still has a long way to go. right? >> you know i had a conversation with my grandmother years ago. you know i am the generation brought after the great civil rights laws were passed well after brown. we were told we would be first to be judged by color of our skin, and by the time i was 20, it was clear that my generation would become the most incarcerated on the planet most murdered in the country. so i said to my grandma, you know, who is still with us 95 years old, third generation member of the naacp and said

grandma, what happened? she said it's sad but simple. we got what we fought for but lost what we had. >> that's very much the struggle we have. we got the right to be a cop but we lost safe community and for kids to go to whatever school they want to but lost the right to assume they would be treated fairly at whichever school they went to. and so on down the line. the reality, much has changed. the big fear that jim crow the fear of black men particularly towards white women. defending white femininty. all they had to do was whistle and they strung them up and threw them in the river. something shifted around 1968 and it became with nixon's law and order campaign more about defending the right, the presumed criminality of black

men and that's what you see in the trayvon case. >> i was going to go right there to the trayvon case because any feelings we had of -- prideful feelings about how far we have come in bridging the gap if you will, and here is this 17-year-old kid walking down the street. >> beautiful kid. >> in the year 2012, a young kids, black or white can't walk down the street? >> that's exactly right. you have to understand the psychology of fear we are dealing with. on the one hand, that the notion of defending white femininity and black men as rapists has declined significantly. so no longer people freaked out by blacks and whites, which was eisenhower's big fear about the

brown division as relates to chief justice warren but now racial profiling is about race out of place. people see a blackmail walking through their enabled and they freak. i was talking to a reporter male walking % through their enabled and they freak. i was talking to a reporter. for their new york affiliate had to get a note he can carry with him to hand to the local police so when he is reporting in a white neighborhood he is handing a note proving he is reporter. this is the sort of silent humiliation we as black men deal with. a friend who is a retired federal judge he tells stories whenever he wants to drop the top on his convertible and tie his bandana on and listen to his music, he expects to be pulled over and he gets pulled over and

pulls out his retired federal judge id card and the cop about has a heart attack. he is stopping this man because he is black and driving in a wealthy white neighborhood which he happens to live in. jamal simons democratic strategist says that every -- he, jamal, himself, and everybody, every black brother, if you will, that he knows, has had an experience not as tragic but in the sense of being stopped. >> yes. >> by the cops when they are doing absolutely nothing wrong other than walking down the street, driving their car or whatever. >> that's right. >> every single person he knows has had that experience. >> especially if they have been to new york city. mayor bloomberg and commissioner kelly have turned this into a pandemic. in 2003, new york city had

170,000 stop and frisks. if that weren't bad enough and 87% of those that year the person didn't get a summons, were found to be completely, you know without no reason to be stopped. 87 per. excuse me. 89% of those that year or so were people of color. fast forward to last year. last year, there were 170 stop and frisks 687, 87% were found to have no reason. 88% were. it was almost 90% people of color. now it's over 90% people of color. >> the racial profiling still goes on? >> on a massive scale. on a massive scale. the problem in this country is we haven't had an honest conversation about it. if you go back 10 years, george bush was campaigning for president and campaigning against campaigning up and down

we thought it was a high-water mark of consensus. what happened was september 11th. the reality, in that moment when we were willing to do anything to try to feel safe our country decided to hold on to racial profiling. what we know from history is that racial and gender-based profiling, profiling based upon what people are makes us less safe. >> ben jealous is the president of the naacp. in studio with us, it's ncaapdorg and your calls welcome on a lot of the issues we will be talking about at 866-55-press. not that we have exhausted that. but i do want to ask you: i have followed for years the work of the naacp legal defense fund in fighting the death penalty. it looks like we may have one more state that will sign on. >> yes. yes. yes. so connecticut, we at the naacp have made a big effort in the state of connecticut with several human rights groups and

we got the senate and the house by a wide margin. in the house 86 to 62. we were fighting that. all of the sudden they saw which way the wind was blowing and piled on. the governor there saying it is a bill abolishing the death penalty, he would sign it. it's a campaign promise. we have no doubt he will do the right thing there? >> that interviews us to 17. >> wow seventeen states that have said no death penalty. >> exactly. we have abolished it in n, in new mexico, in the great state of illinois and now in connecticut. connecticut is the first post-troy davis. we tried this three times and it is true it pushed us over the top, increased consciousness, activism on this the promise i made to troy davis no matter

what happened we would fight until the deed was done. the reality what we are doing as activists is seeking to empower our colleagues at the naacp legal defense fund. in order to get the supreme court to outlaw it once and for all as we have done before when we got them to outlaw it for the death penalty for juveniles, for example, is we have to get a majority of states. >> yeah. >> to ban it. the u.s. constitution says a punishment must be cruel and also, unusual to be found to be unconstitutional. >> that's an excellent point. >> torture is totally constitutional. >> now, i oppose the death penalty across the board for any reason whatsoever for anybody. >> right. >> but it is also true that in addition to being a cruel and unusual punishment it is particularly cruel and unusual toward people of color. if you look at the number? >> look. >> that's absolutely right.

poor people of all colors. it's all saying in addition to being racist exclusively reserved for the poor, it is geographically random. for instance, in connecticut, 40% of death row comes from a ton of who the prosecutor is and how willing they are to sacrifice other people's lives to increase their career. >> yeah. >> that's why this has to be and on top of that, it wastes money. >> yeah. >> the state of calfifornia estimates it spends $184 million a year more than it would cost without the potsility of patrol. >> that's money that you can't spend as republican of california and also homicide detectives, that you can't spent getting the cop killers off of the street. in california, almost 50% of

homicides go unsolved. you know, somebody who has had their own cousin fall victim to murder and watched their family go through that grief, you can't get much closer than i was. most victims families the ones we hear from, the angry kind of vengeance most victim's families are more interested in getting cop killers off the streets. >> so it won't happen again. >> than killing the person who killed their loved one who is already in a cage. given our state budgets, it is a cost. spend money executing the person or spend money hiring more homicide detectives. >> one of the big issues the naacp is involved in. join the conversation. we save a seat at the table for you.

this is a serious organizing challenge because of these folks are in nursing homes. a lot of folks are -- the reasons they don't have id is because they are marginalized already. this is going to take all of the energy of the people who believe in democracy and are willing to work for it. in states where it can be like in minnesota, there is going to be a ballot measure in november in which people are going to vote. should we have a voter id law or should we not? we are trying to convince people that they need to vote no, which is simply-- or skip that question. a non-vote is a no vote on the election on this issue. there again, that's another solution to a different problem. we have got a vote to have. in a number of states, that is the number of problems. we have upcoming election so we have to debunk the lives around voter i want d. the more rude i wantrudimentary

reporting recently did a study of the 4 big sunday shows, meet the press, fox news sunday and from june to february 12th and sure enough, they found that 70% of the one on one interviews were with republicans of which 86% were male and 92% were white. and republicans out numbered democrats 282 to 164. the sunday shows, in other words, are a little more than a sounding board for conservative republicans. yeah, so much for the myth of the liberal media. it doesn't exist. now, what we need is a sunday morning show from current tv! how about it? john nichols from the nation magazine will be in studio with us tomorrow. so come on back. see you right here again tomorrow morning. >> this is the bill press show.
