getting him in there didn't get us everything we wanted. what i'm arguing for is a return to the basic strategy progressives have always had when things work. lbj, the war aside, he signed more civil rights laws than any president but he didn't lead the civil rights movement. that was baker and dr. king who led the movement who created a crisis in selma, who created a context within which that president could respond. under george bush, we had a great movement for peace. we had the wrong president. under obama, we had arguably the right president but we had an awful movement, the tea party. now, it is time for us to re-elect the president so he can have arguably the right president but re-energize the movement so you have the right moofnlt at the same time. this book is a blue precipitation for how it is that we can get a real movement that is up and running to get the best out of this president.

occupy wall street brought into global consciousness economic inequality, wall street running amok, those are more salient and relevant now and will be going forward than they were even last year in the fall when they first came out. but the challenge that we have is that you know, if the occupy movement is sort of like the student on violent coordinating committee of the 1960s those folks occupied the lunch counters. they occupied the segregated buses and the freedom rides. they also helped the mississippians occupy the voting booth. right now, we're in a situation where we don't have that broad movement that can both protest and deal with the lectorral system. that's the next stage. my book is the post-hope democrats and independents. we're not hopeless. we're post-hope. we know we've gotta be able to both vote smart but also keep the pressure on the system to give us the changes we with

we have -- part of what we have to recognize is that there is a false view that has become the conventional wisdom that we have too much partisanship in the country. that is not true. frankly, the democrats probably could be a little bit more partisan in terms of sticking up for stuff we actually believe in and not compromising so quickly. it is a problem of right wing extremism. and the republican party being pulled so far to the right and they have to deny science. they have to make up a fact. they are now -- it has become business as usual. alan west saying there are 84 members of the communist party in congress. it is bad enough he said it but where was the republican leadership to say hold on a second. absolute silence. when you have that kind of dynamic where the elected officials and their biggest spokespersons distort and lie as a matter of routine it doesn't

mean we have to participate more not less. there is a dangerous that progressive gets so frustrated with what's going on that we actually participate less. we have to participate more. >> stephanie: well and that's so powerful, van for you to say that as a victim of these gotcha politics that they played. in your case, it was something that wasn't even true. >> i mean, playing politics is a contact sport. i'm not a politician. i wasn't somebody who had a big aspiration to go work in the white house. they asked me to be a special advisor. i was proud to go there when i was asked. but you know, once they start trying to make up stuff or take stuff out of context so much, look, i was proud to admit i was on the left side of pluto when i was younger. i was a radical activist. distinguishable in the bay area. you have to work hard to be known as a radical and an activist even in the bay area. those are my young years.
