country should be equal. >> rob, you were in studio with us not too long ago, and we talked about this that i have to say -- just yesterday this makes us nervous if it gives us a president romney which will take us back as you know unbelievably in the battle for gay rights. >> i'm hoping -- i know obama only carried north carolina by 14,000 votes the last time and this will certainly not help him in certain circles, but we want to believe that the people who are against gay marriage are not going to vote for him anyway. now the question is are they single-issue voters that will be energized enough to come out when they might not have come out ordinarily. but we also hope we're energizing young people and people under 40 are wildly in favor of marriage equality and basically equal rights for

everyone. so hopefully we can energize some of those people to come out and net out even on this. >> rob this is what leadership is, though. how do you -- as obviously one of our greatest straight allies how do you think this will affect the debate? because this is a sitting president of the united states of america. >> right. and by the way the first black president of america. i mean it's historic in so many ways, but i think it will play out good if we can frame it beyond just marriage equality because this is really about civil rights. this is really about whether or not we view people in this country as lesser? we have only one group of people in america that are viewed as second class citizens under the law, and that is the gay lesbian community. so this has to be now -- talked about in a grander scheme, which

is this is the last piece of the civil rights puzzle being put into place. we are now -- if we now view everyone in america as equal, we are -- we are realizing the dreams of -- of what our founding fathers meant. >> rob, you know, if my polling has any indication meaning the people that called the show in the last hour and a half blacks whites independents. they have all said the same thing. this is courage. and i think -- particularly when your opponent is mitt romney when you show true courage, which is so rare in politics, and you show true principal that's the other thing that contrasts well. >> it does. and i can say in general that the democratic party has always been a party of inclusivity. when it comes to the civil rights acts and policies for women, these things i think are going to start cutting against

romney and showing that he is -- you know is -- they are for making sure people don't get to the polls to vote. they are for cutting off health care for women. they are for basically trying to keep this country for rich white people and i think that it does show great courage on obama's part, but ultimately this is what we want in leaders, to do the right thing, and he has done the right thing. >> look at each and every issue, your lovely and talented wife michelle i know is with my future husband your son, jake reiner -- >> you are going the other way? is that the other bit of breaking news? think energize the youth vote, don't you? >> i do. i do. this is just a matter of time we have said this many many times, but there was a time in this country when women couldn't vote, when blacks couldn't marry whites or blacks couldn't vote we're going to look back and say you mean there was a time when a group of people were thought of as second-class citizens? and people are going to realize this is not going to hurt society. it's not like -- it's like jon stewart said, does this mean i have to marry a gay person? it doesn't mean that. you can do whatever you want. you can -- you know whatever religious believes you have are not going to be effected by the. it just means that we'll all be equal under the law. >> romney things marriage should

>> rob, i think the key in this gallup poll is independents are for gay marriage 57% to 40. >> that helps us because we're basically fighting over those independents in seven to 12 key battleground states but i think we have to broaden this issue to not just be about gay marriage. it has to be about equal rights under the law for everyone. if you can frame it that way -- i don't think romney is going to be wanting to talk about these things on the campaign trail. >> the conversation we always have how provably far to the right this party has gone he has signed a pledge to enact a constitutional federal amendment banning gay marriage. >> i know. they have dragged this -- the party has gone so far to the right, and unfortunately they have dragged us as democrats

further to the right than we would like to be. but this is a funny country. we have a way of correcting things as we go along, you know? and this is a wonderful thing that he has come out to say. >> and the president, as he said was evolving but i think -- i was reading a quote from audacity of hope and he said then, i -- i probably need to be open to the fact that i might be wrong on this. >> yes, i know. and it does take time for a lot of people. it's -- you know these are entrenched ideas. that's why we did this play eight that was written by lance black which was based on the trial -- the federal trial we had against proposition eight. because we wanted people to get inside that courtroom and see what was going on. and when you put it to a legal test, the other side literally -- i'm not exaggerating, you can look at it
