for report that they have been playing funny-money games again and lost $2,000,000,000 $2 billion loss which would have been prevent from the rules and regulation under dodd-frank had been in place. they are not in place because people like jamie diamond of j.p. morgan chase says we don't need them. the government should stay out of wall street and do nothing to correct the abuses of 2008. where do with he go from here? first, a little politics. i have to tell you on the political front, i don't think there is anybody who writes about it more or blog about it more than aaron blake from at a time fix column at the washington post joining us again this morning. aaron, welcome back to the program. >> thanks for having me back. >> good to read you every day several times a day. good to talk to you. let's start with the president's big announcement on same-sex marriage. you have taken a look at the possible political impact of that decision. how does it play?

>> we haven't seen too much polling on this so far. but on friday we finally did get some input back a gallup poll came out. the first thing we noticed about the poll is that for a strong majority of americans, this is not an issue that matters to their vote. 60% of people said this would have no impact on who they vote for in the november election. >> that's point number 1. point number 2 is among the other four, about 40% of americans, about twice as many people said that this decision would make them more negatively predisposed toward voting for obama. about one quarter of americans say this would make them less likely to vote for obama. about one in eight americans say it would make them more likely to vote for him. so to that -- that suggests to us that, you know, there is a potential price he could be paying among a small have you ever had of democrats and

independent who, you know, while a very small number of them e elections are decided by a very small number of voters. >> when you go back to i think it was 20 oil 4 t wasn't so long ago when same-sex marriage -- then we called it gay marriage, i guess, was like the number 1, red-hot social issue, all of those initiatives on i think there was 10 or 11 states. right? dallas that had initiatives on the ballot in november of that year to ban same-sex marriage the fact where we move to today where 6 out of 10 say zero impact on their vote? >> remarkable? isn't it. >> it is. it's hard to believe that was only eight years ago, and not just that but look at the way that mitt romney's campaign has responded to this. >> hardly at all. >> imagine george w. bush being handed this same set of circumstances in his reelection campaign and basically, you know, punting on it and not

saying anything about it not even kind of throwing a bone to the social conservatives out there. romney was at liberty university this weekend which is, you know basically the one place. >> ground zero for the evangelical evangelicals. >> he didn't allude to the fact this was an issue out there. he said this is my position on gay marriage. >> and santorum is out saying that romney ought to take this and run with it basically, make this a centerpiece of his campaign as santorum would surely do. i am not sure romney wants to follow that advice. >> yeah. this is maybe the time where the republican party is glad rick santorum isn't their presidential nominee. i don't think that's news to anybody. but i think that, you know, that's just another -- that's another example of how this

issue has changed over the last 8 to 10 years, given the fact that the republicans are basically glad right now that they don't have a culture warrior as their nominee. >> barney frank on one of the sunday shows yesterday was asked about this made a point which i have heard others. here aaron, barney frank from yesterday. >> if you were going to cast your vote based upon a candidate's position regarding same-sex marriage, you were going to vote for om bam in a or romney on that. >> do you think barney is right office in other words, people had already -- the people who were against it? right? were never going to vote for obama in the first place is another way of saying it. >> yeah, the question, though, is when did obama go kind of a step too far with this? i think that, you know we all think that -- we all pay attention to the stuff. we all knew or thought we knew obama was going to eventually support gay marriage or maybe that he already did in his own mind but just hadn't come out and said it.

i am not sure that all of the voters out there knew this like we did. and so i think that there are potentially some conservative democrats or some democrats maybe even african-american democrats who aren't on board with gay marriage and who may be taking a second look at obama. on the other hand, i don't think it's going to be a large portion of americans who think this is the most important issue. there are so many people who have having economic problems, and, you know, the gay marriage is not something that directly affects the vast majority of americans in this country, their ability to do get married. so i think that, you know it shouldn't be over estimated but i think that if this makes some democrats stay home or if there there are some independent who for some reason, this is a major issue for them and they otherwise would have voted for obama, you know, then it could move some votes. >> aaron blake is our guest. he is a blogger for washington post. you can follow him the post

politics.com and the column, "the next." my prediction is by november we won't be talking about this at all. we will be talking about the economy and how's the president stack up on the economy in your research and in your polling? >> it's been a rough couple of months with the two jobs reports that came out. this is the reason we are seeing the romney campaign punt on the gay marriage issue is because -- >> they want to talk the economy? right? >> what they are seeing is they are seeing the economy start to work for them again. there was about three months the first three months of this year where that wasn't necessarily the case. there was some better job growth than there had been in a long time. this is starting to look like it could be a talking point in the obama campaign's favor. i don't think that's the case any more. we have seen some kind of even en in the polls. we have seem obama favorable ratings drop a little bit.

time magazine. you have probably seen it. you have heard about it this week. peter, we have it up. cyprian, we can show that to our current tv viewers at any rate and describe it for our radio listeners. if you haven't seen it, it's a woman who is breast feeding, you say, oh, so, big deal? what's the big deal? the big deal of this is that she is not holding this infant at her breast. this infant, this child is standing in front of her reaching up and suckling his mother's breast. her son in this case happens to be 3 years old. and the legend or the title on the front of the magazine is: are you mom enough? implying that, of course if you are a new mom or a recent mom and you are not breast feeding

your kid up until the time they are three years old and beyond then you are not mom enough. this mom jamie grumey says that any idea that we should stop breast feeding before 3 is not -- it's not necessary. it's just something that we have acustom -- a custom of in this country. >> it's a cultural thing. i don't know who came up with that, but it has no biological reasoning behind it at all. >> no biological reasoning behind it at all. we should just keep nursing as long as we want to she says and there is nothing abnormal about this at all. >> this is a normal option for your child. and it should not be stigmatized. my goal is to make it normal and not to say that everyone has to do it, but it shouldn't be condemned. >> no. i don't think it's normal at

address the issue they say they are trying to address which is attachment parenting and extended breast feeding. >> it was done for 7ationalism but does it have any merit at all? is there any value to breast feeding that long? >> you know, i really think it's important. a lot of people think that you shouldn't breast feed that long because they are uncomfortable with it but we have to think about what's important for the child. the world health organization recommends breast minglk up until the age of 2. they suggest getting milk from another mother before feeding your infant formula. so, you know, you have to think about how is this affecting the child, you know, healthwise? >> well, i hear that. at the same time, i think i would have to guess that most babies start on solid food or get off breast milk by the time

speech, a significant difference in theology here he wanted to say i know there is a difference here don't ask me, too much about it. that didn't work very well. he tried to do a jack kennedy speech explaining why he would not listen to the headquarters in salt lake, he would care about the constitution it pretty much was a flop. he should not repeat that. he gets the biggest applause line when he says, to distinguish himself from president obama, marriage one man and one woman. he says it. he also uses the phrase religious freedom. he said can you believe that's a con vo jersey. what it means to right-wingers is not just the freedom to worship. it is, we want to get as much of your tax money as humanly possible and we don't want obey any rules, regulations or civil rights laws we don't like. >> that's the new definition.

he said something where it was just basically saying that christian values. right? >> yes. >> what we live by. >> that's right. >> that's what makes america great. >> let me think about, aren't there some other faiths around here that? >> there are a few. he couldn't go too far in this speech. he could not say something like oh, by the way, i want to ban all contraception. i want to take 50 shades of gray out of every library because people would recognize instantly he is a very far right character. he had to be a little bit moderate but had to use that religious freedom language get the money, don't obey the laws and he had to make an you unequivocal distinction. >> there is no greater force for good in the nation than christian conscience in action. >> if i were a jew i would be

offended. i think one should be. of course, the christian action that he likes is the action promotest mode like people like jerry fall well. he was phrased extraordinarily long during the beginning of this speech. most of the networks didn't carry that part. he said here was a man who was never afraid, he said of facing an argument and never hated an adversary. a guy who debated jerry fallwell, i think he did hate me as a matter of fact. i really do he was not always the most pleasant person in the world. i can tell you that. >> the this inc. about his appearance at liberty university to me was i thought four years ago, berry, that in the presidential election we didn't see -- they were there, but they were not the dominant force, meaning the religious right and evangelcals but they are back with a ven answer this time. why

why. >> they were supporting most people claim to be picked by god. we had at one point, four people running for the presidency that said god had told them they would be the next president. in rick santorum's case was god told his wife. his wife told rick. none of them turned out to be the chosen one. >> it was santorum bachmann. >> yeah. >> perry. >> and herman cain. >> four. count them. that was the famous line in a movie, an apparent failure to communicate. but, you know, they thought it for a while. this energizes the right. with mitt romney they have to understand, and i think some of the commentators this weekend are correct. when push comes to shove there is going to be a question about

what evangelical voters want to do. will they vote for a mormon or a muslim because at least 25% of them still think barack obama is one. >> in their official name, they have the name jesus christ of latter day saints. right? they have the name jesus christ in the name of their faith. but do most -- to evangelicals consider mormons christians? >> they don't. in general, they do not. william jeffers last october here in washington clearly believes mitt romney is a nice guy but he is not a christian and shouldn't act like he is. frankly at liberty university in some of the classes that are taught at liberty, they specifically teach that mormonism is one of the largest and there, therefore, most significantly dangerous cults in

america. so there is something to get over. the washington post profiled in part a young woman at liberty who said i am not going to the speech on saturday because i am not going to listen to somebody who is a member of a cult speaking at my university. >> for those people who still don't accept more mons as christians, are they likely to vote for romney only because or despite that fact bothvote for him because he is not barack obama? >> i think that that's the hope that the campaign has and i think that they recognize that some of these issues i think the whole major equal thety decision most people are not going to vote on that. but they are going to vote on a cluster of issues and frankly mitt romney looks like the bottom line of his positions is indistinguishable from those of you know, the fallwell who now runs the liberty university of tony perkins or most of those guys who have all of the sudden

congressional hearings are now set for may 23rd a week from wednesday in the secret service scandal, senator joe lieberman, the chairman of the homeland security committee says there will be three questions that should come up in those hearings. the first: is the inspector general satisfied with the investigation investigation? is there any indication of prior bad behavior on behalf of the secret service that would have led to expectations that took place in cardajena? what are the plans to make sure this doesn't happen again? there is a new gallup poll showing a majority of americans, 54%, believe that gay and lesbian relationships are morally acceptable. 50% believe in gay marriage. this is up from levels as low as 40% as recently as 2008 and 2009. gallup making the point that public support of same-sex relationships is at a point where president obama's

on the right push this or don't push it or talk about it i think that's going to determine a lot of where people end up lining up on this. when the vice president talked about it, he talked about visiting the homes of gay couplesnd seeing the love those kids had for their parents and the parents had for the kids and when the president talked about it, he talked about members of the military. they can be free to be themselves but not free actually to marry their partners members of the military. so they both approached it, you know, a little differently. but from that angle rather than sounding like they were at the latest gay pride parade. >> some look at this issue and say when you talk about this in terms of relationships and love

and commitment, those are the things that straight people relate to. they say that's something i want in my own life. a mistake that the gay rights have talked about it in terms of hospital rights and pensions and legal rights people see as not the reason that they get married. most people with a to do it because of the social committee. how far it's going into which gay relationships were accepted. you couldn't talk about 10 years ago in the same way. it wasn't as accepted. there weren't as many people, you know everyone didn't have someone in their own lives they could say, oh, yes, i have a gay

relative or a gay friend who has this loving committed relationship. so i know that that's we talked to aaron who had brin a recent gallup poll, six out of 10 americans said the president's decision wouldn't have any impact at all on how they voted for president which shows it's not 8 out of 10 but 6 out of 10. we have con a along way when all of these ballot measures were on the ballot and it looked like it was the number one explosive social issue you see you did a large voc he will segment of voters. it's clear that's not the case any more. i think that's also what the

president and the republicans are sort of banking on because the president doesn't want to talk about this too much. there are intoning states. the republicans don't want to talk about this either. >> that's another thing that has changed in the polling on this research on this issue is that, you know a few years ago when you talked to people about this issue, they were very concerned with not being associated with the hard-core advocates of gay rights, that that was seen as fringy or extreme. now you hear they do not want to be associated with the opponents either. so people who oppose gay marriage will say to polsters or researchers, i have gay friends, you know, i am tolerant. i am not a bigot. people want to make clear that's the case. the republicans don't want to get pigeonholed that way. >> republicans have to know the

train is moving in the direction of marriage equality look at state after state. six states plus the district of columbia. they don't want to get too far. >> they have it in the other direction. >> no doubt about that. i hope it's reversed. too bad. >> i think you are right. everybody things it's inevitable. >> isn't it? isn't it true that barney frank yesterday, i think he was on this week, peter yeah, do we have that? here is barney saying, what impact this will have on the election. barney says not. >> if you were going to cast your vote based upon a candidate's position regarding same-sex marriage, you were already going to vote for obama or romney based on that. >> making the point that those

who are against this would never vote for obama anyhow. >> that's true but you talked about that gallup poll that found 60% say it's not going to affect their vote. that poll found of the 40%, said it would affect their vote. 13% said it would make them more likely to support obama. 23%, i think, nearly twice as many said it would make them less likely to support obama. and you had a story, i believe, in the homes obama trying to reach out to the black evangelical issue on this community and getting some push back, saying this is going to make it harder for us to get out the vote for you. right. this isn't something that pushes people in the other direction. >> isn't the issue going to be the economy? >> absolute. >> that's why. >> that's the biggest reason for that 60% number is that there are bigger things on people's

population. in fact in my state. there is a mormon temple five blocks down the road from where i live. maybe i misunderstood, you guys said the republican party, their stand on gay marriage they know their time was doomed on that, they were living on borrowed time, that eventually this is going to happen. my question is: how can you really believe that when we see 37, 38, almost 80% of the states have banned it in their constitutions? >> i am one who said, i think, that republicans see that this is going in the direction of marriage equality. those 30 states didn't. north carolina is the latest but six states recently in the last two years, i think, actually, including big state of

new york have gone toward marriage equality. so has the district of columbia. remember, california did, too, until the courts threw it out. buzz getting rid of don't ask/don't tell i think there are tons of evidence that the american public is more to rapt. >> i think he is right to point out we are not there yet. you hear someone like mike huckabee or other social conservatives have said this is inevitable because of the demographics of it. >> that's right. >> people under 40 overwhelmingly favor gay marriage. people over 665 are overwhelmingly against it. those are pretty stable numbers. so i think the consensus is those people who are young now and who have been raised in a more accepting environment continue to age. they will continue to favor gay marriage.

as a friend of bill. she is political writer for "the atlantic" joining us from buzzfeed.com. you know mitt romney gave the commencement address at liberty university, the world's largest christian university this weekend. covering that for bus feed, mckay coppins who joins us on our news line this morning, mckay, good morning. >> good morning. >> hi mckay. >> you know each other from the campaign trail? >> we do. >> this was a big moment for mitt romney. what did he talk about? how did he do? >> you know, he did pretty well. it was really actually especially kind of the history of mormonism and evangelical christianity kind of a historic moment. he came there to reach out to the evangelical community which he struggled with throughout his political career and to try to kind of bridge the divide between his mormon faith and the

evangelical conservative community. and the people i talked to afterwards said, you know, he had he had good speech writers, it was a good speech and they seem like they are willing to support him as a presidential candidate but they weren't quite ready for any kind of theological gap between mormonism and their faith. >> as a matter of fact there are some. some earlier today, there are actually courses taught at liberty university that mormonism is a cult and not a church. right? >> right. >> they are a little leery of mormonism? >> in fact, i found one of the classes in the course catalogue there theology 678 which says major cults such as mormonism, christian science, 7th day and the occult. they are teaching about

mormonism along with the occult movement shows how they view mormonism and mitt romney's faith there at liberty. >> there was a lienne in the speech, romney acknowledging theological differences where usually, it seems like his appeal has been to say to social conservatives, i am one of you. and by acknowledging that that seemed to get a good response, that he wasn't trying to do this dance because a lot of the problem that evangelicals seem to have with mormons is this whole cult issue, mormons trying to say that they are full-fledged christians and evangelicals not believing that. >> that's an interesting point because in 2007, he gave a sort of similar speech to, you know to kind of try to make this mormon issue go away. >> right. >> he did try to appeal to their shared christianity and said, you know, i am a crist just like you. i believe in jesus just like

that. you. that did not go well because if you believe mormonism is a cult you don't want to hear this guy say, no. no. no. we are the same. so this time around, he tried to steer clear of that. he said, look we have different face but we are united by christian principles. they did go over a little better. a lot of the attendees i talked to felt like he was reaching for, you know, a unifying kind of alliance that they weren't ready to make. >> mccain is a political writer for buzz feed down at liberty university this weekend. let's be honest, guys. isn't it what mitt romney was really saying? i may be a cultist? right? i may practice a cult but at least i am not barack obama? >> yeah. that's actually the most interesting thing i found. i spent a few days at liberty university hanging out on campus and talking to students.

>> oh, my god. >> i fully sub mercied myself there and i found that, you know, these are not just -- you know, the students and just being trained to be good christians. they are trained to be conservative culture warriors. they are still going to church to vote for thevan presidential candidates. but to do so, they kind of had to do these. there is a lot of cognitive dissidents and theological gymnastics going on to try to figure out how they can biblicallily justify voting for a cultist. there are a lot of interesting conversations going on citing scriptural ways for them to vote for this non-christian in their minds. >> have any other presidents been at liberty? >> michelle bachmann was there.

>> of course. >> herman cain came more than once almost every one but i am not sure rick santorum did. you had almost every presidential can data come through there. they had a long history of having them pay their dues at liberty. >> what did you make of the next of gay marriage? because apparently, it got a very good response just that romney gave a shout out to traditional marriage but to me it felt sort of dropped in there. there was no context of it, no explanation of it. he didn't give any kind of reasoning behind it. it was like by the way, marriage is between a man and woman. moving on. >> that's totally what it was. he had to mention that. that was one thing to rally the states. >> that's the distinction between him and obama. i think the reason he didn't dwell on it frankly is because

he doesn't want to get sucked into campaign about social issues. it's about the economy. if he thinks he is on the right side of this issue he didn't want to make it about gay marriage. he tried to appease the base and tried to move on. i think that will be his strategy. >> is it your sense they will be satisfied with that? because they do want him to campaign on this. rick santorum said take this ball and run with it. right? this is our issue. put your whole campaign around this. you know, if rick santorum had given that commencement speech it would have been nothing but about gay marriage and abortion and birth control. >> right. they would have loved it. there are a lot of santorum supporters on campus pretty disappointed you see he is not the nominee. i think frankly they wish he

would campaign on it but my sense is regardless of what happens they are going to turn out for him. the way that, you know the campains work these days like you can have surrogates, super p.a.c.s going out there and kind of making its way for you without him making it putting it in a stump speech. i think that's how they will do it. >> are you still on campus? >> no. >> okay. >> back in sec ulaw lar new york. >> i am glad you esc ain'ted. we were going to send a posse down to rescue you. that guy is being held by the taliban. >> very nice. they were very nice. >> i don't know if they wanted him any more than he wanted to be there. >> they didn't exactly. they were very friendly. >> we are glad you are back in the secular world there. politics reporter with buzz fees field. follow him at buzz feed.com and

and as i washed the game i couldn't imagine what we would be, what it would be like without black players. and i think that same-sex marriage is such a natural change, there will come a time when you won't be able to believe the other situation ever existed. >> i think you are right. the question is: when will that time happen? and it's certainly not going to happen before november the 6th 2012? right? >> the point, for a lot of people, linda. >> yes. >> molly? >> i think linda has a good point in that the change comes to the culture before it comes to the politics a lot of the time and that when people become more accepting and when people see around them these differences or these people that they accept as fully human and equal, that's when the politics

♪ >> heard around the country and seen on current tv this is the bill press show. monday may 14, '12 minutes before the top of the hour winding up here, molly ball is in studio with us political writer for "the atlantic." she has been out on the road following most of the candidates in the primary. >> uh-huh we were in richmond virginia on president obama kickoff day. he has been doing campaigning since. he has two more events this evening. >> that's right. >> in new york. the president is out with a new ad today. >> a tough new ad. very tough. >> going right up against mitt

romney. this is interesting. they are not waiting for the convention. >> we have not seen anyone sort of play the polite forbearance card. >> romney has been running againstbam from the very beginning in the primary did as much as he could to ignore his republican opponents. >> rye. >> president obama flying out on the press plane everybody says do you think he will mention romney by name? i said, of course he is. he did. there inand in richmond guys after what they think is romney's achilles heel. his job record. >> i was a steel worker for 30 years. we had a reputation for quality products. it was something that was american made. we weren't rich but i was able to put my daughter through college. >> a good paying job you can support and raise a family on is

hugely important. >> i know how business works, how they come and go. bain capital was the major one. they were involved it's a steel mill in kansas city that bain capital invested in and leveraged and eventually the company went bankrupt and people lost their jobs. >> the point is this is a guy who sells himself as mr. fix it. i am a businessman. i know the economy. i know how to create jobs and his record shows? >> the case they are making is it's not about creating jobs. it's about creating wealth. it's about piling up money. at the same time bleeding the economy dry and hurting workers hurting the middle class. >> shutting down jobs exporting jobs, shutting down plants. >> outsourcing. >> putting people out of work and i mean factually correct? >> i have not had a chance to look at all of the facts behind

this particular case in this ad but this is, you know, something that was used against romney '94 and in the senate case against ted kennedy of the it was devastated and used against him in this primary when you had the gingrich super p.a.c. made that big ad about it. and i think it had some effect in south carolina as well. there were a lot of other factors going on. so we knew this was coming but i think still, it's a devastating thing. it's a tough thing for the romney people to fend off. >> at a time shows that from the beginning, right the obama 23u8 bore. they are not taking anything for granted. >> absolutely. they are attacking romney on his strengths, i think, you know, instead of sort of anybody elsing around the edges or filing things to argue. there has been plenty of that but taking head-on the sort of number 1 credential, the number 1 qualification romney is venting and trying to make a

broader policy. they are starting up a website, i believe it's romneyeconomics, making the case his whole economic philosophy centers around this kind of thing. it's not just a case of, you know, he did some things when he was in business. it's about the way he views capitol capitolism. >> at indiana last week dick lugar, six terms in the senate senate one of the 7th term voters said no, they chose instead as a republican nominee richard mourdock a prouted republican. saying he is not sure he is going to vote for mitch mcconnell were elected. bi-partisan means democrats do what republicans want. the tea partyers who have taken over the u.s. house likely to take over the u.s. senate? >> yes and no. there was a lot of sort of tea party triumphfalism after lugar lost and i think amount of

people have flashbacks when there were so many senate primaries. >> right. >> in delaware? >> >>. >> right? >> in colorado perhaps, where the tea party helped nominate candidates who turned out to be unpal unpalatable to the general electorate but they elected at of people who are u.s. senators like marco rubio and mike lee. >> rand paul. >> absolutely. who also started out as being the establishment saying this guy is unelectable. we can't let him win the primary. but i think the tea party is going to have a lot less of that sort of impact this year. if you look across the landscape of frames they were going after orrin hatch in utah. they managed to force him into a primary at the state convention but barely. he is going to win that primary. there is very little question that he wins that primary. so he will be whetheralmost definitely going back to the u.s. senate.

darking texasa vary vary hard. conservative rock star ted cruz. there is a possibility and there will be a lot of money poured into that race by the tea party and right-wing groups. it's a tough climb for them. it looks unlikely. when you look across the primary landscapetiously that's mostly the case. >> molly ball good of you to come in. >> all right. >> i will be back to wrap things up with a quick parting shot for today. >> on your radio, on t.v. the bill press show new on current tv.
