don't know how he gets away with not cheating off of one side or another. in your piece you said he wants to etch-a-sketch this views because of his stunning unpopularity with latinos. are his numbers lately? >> i think it's like 50 or 60 points. it is one of the most massive gaps i have seen. and in those southwest states if obama can run the table with those latino voters it doesn't matter if he loses ohio or florida, he can still win this election pretty comfortably because just of the latino voters in the southwestern state. >> do you think he is going to choose rubio and will that help him with the latino voters? >> there was an article that said that romney is looking for

the most boring white candidate he can find. rubio isn't a white male he is not as boring as portman. and rubio resembles sarah palin a lot more than the tea party wants to let on. he has been a senator for about seven minutes right now, so if we thought that the former half term governor from alaska would be a great person to have next in line for the presidency marco rubio has a very similar resume. >> uh-huh. you wrote a say that boy oh boy, even tony perkins think the anti-gay joke was inappropriate. >> it's really fun to watch. you have got this pose-obama marriage freakout going on where obama -- on rand paul tells this joke about obama's

kids meant when they said that on the third grade playground. prebus's comments points to the fact that the gop doesn't know how to react to this. one thing i found very frustrating is the right-wing had one talking point it's unconstitutional and here is why. and it was very hard to get democrats to taco -- talk cohere rently about this issue. and certainly wins in the eyes of the public very often. and i think it will play out in the option direction here. obama and his allies are speaking incredibly clearly and they happen to be right.

>> what do you think about the u.s. times poll saying marriage equality could be a problem for the president. it's hard to say at this point, right? >> i think that poll said that 26% of the country think less of the president because of that and that's probably the 26% of the country who would never vote for him no matter what he does. >> right. >> i also don't necessarily think that it is going to help him that much. people's views on barack obama i think are pretty well defined right now. but what i do think that it does is when people see the president of the united states plant the flag for equality. first of all you are seeing marginal democrats rally behind his position. second of all you are going to see it legitimize that position in more and more people's minds. and this is one of those things where symbolism really matters. mor and more americans are going

to go okay this is now, you know the main stream position. i feel comfortable with it now. and i think you are going to see a shift towards equality. >> and that's what leaders do as you say. and hopefully has the benefit of mobilizing young people and gay people. >> yes, and there is some chance of that. certainly there's some people who are disaffected, and this gives them a reason to come out. ultimately my political analysis is that this is probably a wash and the reason why this is good is not because it drives donors to obama or discourages someone on the other side the reason why this is good is obama did the right thing. >> yeah and if it's possible it has made mitt romney look even more unprincipals. you can tell he doesn't want to talk about this because of the

memo going around saying the attitude has changed, and so you are right, they don't know what to do. >> yeah. and romney is even etch-a-sketching on this issue. in one week he was both for and against allowing gay couple to adopt. >> oh in one day. >> how can you be against adoption? >> right. >> how could you possibly think that having a child raised by no family at all is better than having a child raised by a couple two are of the same sex. >> yeah. ian great stuff as always. we will check in with you more often as the election rolls along. thanks so much. >> thank you. >> there we go.
