i get sucked in. the same thing this time. i thought the opening ceremonies were fabulous. i really -- it was so quirky and so i don't know british, you know. >> again, as i mentioned, they had, monty python, harry potter. you realize how much british culture that we have really, you know, kind of assumed. >> well thought out. >> and the queen. >> the queen. >> out of a helicopter. >> that was amazing and that was so perfectly british because it had the james bond. it had the queen, the korgies she is known to have. it was perfect. >> they sell belated national health care, the kids hopping around with the beds and the nurses dancing. it was great. the michelle obama was there. she had a good time. she told us what her dream had

to be a rockier start than in london. comments by some criticizing the british handling of the olympics. there has been a mixed bag. i think that was the concern of some folks when they saw the governor heading out for a foreign trip with such -- so many high-mo file stops back to back, would there be these little gaffes and moments that the press now nationally would be picking up on to criticize him? >> he certainly left london and left the british with a bad taste in their mouth about romney. obama is popular there in the u.k. saying the brits weren't ready to hold the games, you know, it was not well received, shall we say. neither by david cameron nor by boris johnson or the british people. >> that's absolutely right. we have been looking over some of the coverage by the british press press. despite that governor romney did

walk it back and say the british people are absolutely prepared for the olympics. they were drawing comparisons to sarah palin in slamming him over this in the british press and some of the tabloids. i think it would be and under understatement to say they were not excited to show case the preparation of their city to handle such a mass event like this. >> i think they have done a magnificent job so far and the city of london has never looked better. by the way one thing about olympics, before we get back. move move on to jerusalem. i thought the purpose of this trip was to be there to support his wife and her dressage event. her event doesn't take placeto until thursday. he is not going to be there at all. right? >> that's absolutely correct. the romney camp told us before and the governor said at some point that, here while he is proud of his wife he wasn't

going to be there. he had a campaign to be there. sounds like he never planned to be there. i think if he did, there would be no shortage of jokes and gaffes over the dressage. >> the dancing horse and mitt romney, he moved on to jerusalem. he vowed that he would not criticize president obama in the fortunately policy while he was on foreign soil. his speech yesterday did seem, however, to differ from president obama on his enthusiastic support for israeli strike against iran. >> that's absolutely correct. i think romney's comments -- specifically avoiding specifically condemning president obama. but it sounds like it was well received by many people including prime minister

benjamin netanyahu. his government has not had the best relationship with the governor. it seems like he had a warm reception. >> he and romney have been friends for a long time. what exactly do you -- have you been able to figure out? what exactly has obama done about israel that republicans feel means obama is not supportive of israel. i keep hearing this all the time. obama is not a friend of israel. ♪net has never said that. shim simon perez has never said that. in what way has obama abandoned israel? >> my best understand from looking at this, covering all of the buzz around romney's highly anticipated trip is that it is what obama hasn't done. they don't believe. many republicans do not believe he has been an outright ally to

israel. i don't think there is one policy. >> again, they have to show evidence of that. seriously. i am not trying to pick a fight with you. i am just asking. one reporter to another: what the hell are they talking about? right? i mean i can't find anything out. when i look at obama's policies toward israel, it's the impact is same as george w. bush that two state solution and they have got to stop building the settlement. bush said that day-in and day-out. as you know, bush never went to israel in his first term. right? so i just think i guess maybe we have an obligation as reporters to try to find out what the truth is you know. >> right. no. i hear you. this speech, itself is interesting and it comes a couple of days after obama signed legislation that increases military aid to israel but looking at romney's remarks, he made the point that as

american shouldn't just be military intelligence and those who seek to undermine israel maybe out over the base but i have not really heard recently an implicit specific case made as to what those criticisms are. i am not a foreign policy expert by any extent. >> one other thing when romney is in jerusalem, he gives an interview to david muir of abc and david muir said you travel overseas but you still got these political problems back at home. there is a lot of flap about your tax returns and romney repeated he was only going to release the one year and the second year when they are ready and david muir asked him, well, the big question in one year you admitted you paid 13.9% only in taxes. so let's get it out right now.

and romney says i don't remember or i don't know or something to that effect. can he get away with that? >> i think that he will certainly be subject to lots more questions about his tax returns not only when he returns from the foreign trip but for the remainder of campaign. this does not seem to be a theme of the obama campaign and one that republicans want to let up on. the way it was phrased in that abc interview saying i am not sure how much i paid will be picked up by attack ads saying most americans are pretty sure they know what came out of their wallets on tax day and what they had to pay. it was not a statement most americans can relate to. if you are mitt romney you have to be very careful how you do this. i mean obviously, he says he wants to stand firm and not release anything else but it's how you do it and how you say it. >> now, what's up in poland

office what's next? he goes there today. what's the purpose of that final phase of his trip? >> i mean obviously, more of the same. i would expect that the romney campaign would do some sweeping speeches to wrap up before he heads back to domestic campaign events events. they are hoping to cement his statement to show he is not only able to campaign on the world stage and be a player there. on a domestic stage but be a player on the world stage. they have not released a whole lot of details about that trip yet, however. >> so we will have to wait and see what happens. juana summers, good to have you back. thank you so much? >> thank you. >> see you in studio fairly soon juana summers covers politico.com. mitt romney is traveling around

question is saying you may be paying no taxes at all or we know that you paid 13.9% in taxes in that one year you filed. so were there years when you played less than 13.9%? you would think anybody as wealthy as mitt romney ought to be able to answer that question. you are wrong. >> we know there was one year when you paid a 13.9% tax rate. can we clear this up by asking a simple yes-or-no question? was there ever any year when you paid lower than the 13.9%? >> i haven't calculated that. i am happy to go back and look. up paid all of the taxes required by law. i don't pay any more. frankly if i had paid more than are legally due, i don't think i would be qualified to become

take to protect itself against iran, which i think is a pretty serious comment and something that we ought to really pay attention to because no doubt about it. what mitt romney is saying, you know, president obama, the difference is, president obama has said we will not letvan develop a nuclear weapon. we won't let them get there. we will do everything we can to let them get there and not to let them get there, including he is not taking the military option off of the table but that comes at the end of sanctions and diplomatic efforts and getting russia and others to put the screws on iran. the president had united the world community on the sanctions against iran except for russia. the military option is on the table. at the end of the road. what romney is saying is we are not going to let iran develop a nukelar weapon, but the military option is right at the front

misty here. >> let's get into some of the events. the big, much bally-hooed july between michael phelps and ryan lochte saturday afternoon. here is how it ended up. >> the player, all of that training lochte is going to win olympic gold. so far these games go on to ryan lochte. he won it. michael phelps didn't even get a medal at all. did you -- were you sad to see michael phelps get tromped? >> michael phelps is a working class kid from nearby here, baltimore, maryland. my broeshl and my sister's brother was in swim club with him growing up. yeah, phelps has a working class. her son is the greatest olympian arguably in the history of the olympics. so to see him at 26 already be described as over-the-hill, already being attacked by his

teammates as not being in shape for the race it is a little bit disturbing. >> was he taking it for granted, not working hard enough? >> i don't know that. he said he is going to take it as motivation the fact people are vaying that about him. he certainly looks to bea in unbelievable shape although i thank to the naked eye, he is at that class athlete at this point. ryan lochte looks like he is on a mission. he looks so focused that just belies the rest of the competition. i fully expected lochte to win that race. did i expect phelps to come in 8th out of 8 qualifiers? no. we will see what happens. there is still time for michael phelps to put his stamp on these games. >> overall, join the conversation any time. this is what america is talking about, what america is watching the olympics 866-55-press.

and their live with the coverage. do you think they talk too much? >> absolutely. i think it's overly skullmentculpted. >> i am not the biggest costas fan, i will never work in this town again. do i really want to hear in the opening ceremonies bob costas give his off the cuff remarks about the state of the e job description revolution? no. athletes don't talk about the iranian athletes occupying the british embassy.

the games start and i am hooked again. i have to tell you i love the opening ceremonies. i thought it was such a funny and a bold and a self-deposit prec indicate deprecating portrait of the u.k. i loved seeing them on stage at the same time, loved the celebration of national health care. since then i have loved watching team u.s.a. ryan lochte. they made us proud. here i am cheering again for the olympics with all of you. it's great to watch team u.s.a. tomorrow, what a line-up, joe cereone, leo girrard, john wilhelm from think progress. come on back again tomorrow. >> this is the bill press show.
