we will probably find out that there is more on life on mars on a saturday night than there is in des moines, iowa. i can't wait to see what it discovers. we will talk about that and more here. but first we jump out to los angeles to say good morning to lisa ferguson to get today's current news update. hi, lisa. good morning. >> hi, bill. good morning. good morning, everyone. president obama is hitting the trail in connecticut where he will cal pain at the marriott and a private home but first signing the health care act for veterans. romney's team is accusing trying to restrict military voting rights. they have passed several laws that july in obama sued ohio to stop those laws from taking effect. now romney is claiming the president wants to stop military members from voting. here is why: under ohio's new

laws only civilians would the have voting rights restricted. military members would have rights to early vote. they want to maintain those voting rights. whether or not ohio repeels those laws military members will see no change in their voting rights. in the romney victory effort is announcing new fundraising totals. romney for president, romney victory and the republican national committee raised $101.3 million in july. we are still waiting to hear obama's numbers. here is a little excitement to start out your week: nasa safely landed curios it on mars, a car-powered robot powered by plutonium. here are the first few images. curiosity will look for new signs of early life on mars. coming up on full-court press, jonathan allen of politico with

part. >> yeah. you really have to go through all three. they are just long. i did like it a lot. >> you should watch the two previous movies in the trilogy before you go. you are investing like nine hours in this thing at this point. >> i don't know about that. all right. here is my question for you to start off this day and i got into it yesterday as some of you may have seen on cnn. did harry reid do the right thing in raising questions about mitt romney's tax returns? and it may be not paying any taxes for 10 years or one years or two years or however? or is harry way way, way, out of line by making the charge without proving the charge without showing -- without having any evidence? all right. now, we know how this starts. pardon me. it started last week on the floor of the u.s. senate by harry reid got up saying, i talked to a friend of mine who is part of bain capital, and here is what he told me.

>> if a person coming before this body wanted to be a cabinet officer, he couldn't be if he has -- did the the same refusal mitt romney does about tax returns. so the word is out he hasn't paid any taxes for 10 years. let him prove that he has paid taxes because he hasn't. we already know from one partial tax return that he gave us he has money hidden in bermuda, the cayman islands and a swiss bank account, not making that up. >> that's in the partial year that he gave us. mitt romney makes more money in a single day than the average middle classes family makes in two years. >> so harry reid throws it all out there. but the important part is where he says, "the word's out." he said he worked this from somebody who works from bain that somebody didn't pay any -- that mitt romney didn't pay any taxes for maybe 10 years. the republicans have gone crazy over that statement.

they are saying this is terrible. he is making an unfounded accusation. how dare he do this? what's his evidence? what's his proof? mitt romney finally, says to harry, all right. let's see it. let's see it. lay it out there. mitt romney. here he is. here he is. >> harry reid really has to put up or shut up. all right? so here? who are your sources? >> yeah, harry put up or shut up. who are your sources? mitt takes the attack and then the attack is followed up yesterday on this week with george stephanopolous that republican national chairman goofball rince bribus -- well let him use the phrase. >> i am not going to respond to a dirty liar who hasn't filed a single page of tax returns, himself, complains about people with money but lives in the rits

cartedton. >> harry is not complaining about people with money. only saying where are his tax returns. is it true, as he was told, that he didn't pay? by the way, when the -- whether the republican national chairman calls the senate majority leader a dirty liar, there was a time, not so long ago, if that had happened when bob dole was there or howard baker was there or george mitchell or trent lott were there, republicans and democrats alike would have stood up and said, fire his ass. what if michael steele when he was republican chairman had called harry reid or any other senate leader who happened to be at the time a dirty liar? michael steele would have been fired. rince pribus should be fired or apology for that. >> that's a tang he want here you don't call people a dirty liar. here is my question back to rince prchlt ibus. how does he know harry reid is a dirty liar?

why don't you do what barack obama did and joe biden did and release 12 years? why don't you release all 23 years that you gave john mccain when you were being considered for vice president? why? why? why? what journalists should not do is fall into the romney trap that romney is trying to shift this subject and shift the attention from himself to harry reid? harry reid is not the issue. mitt romney is the issue. harry reid doesn't have mitt romney's tax returns. harry reid can't clear this up. what do you mean? put up or shut up? no. mitt, you've got to put up or shut up. i am telling you harry reid is -- this is absolutely brilliant on harry reid's part because all mitt is talking about, he may want to talk about jobs or the economy. but he is still talking about his tax returns and yesterday, ed rawlins another big republican campaign consultant, probably the most famous of all, ed rawlins came out and said mitt romney has to release more

romney may not have paid any income taxes for 10 years. mitt romney is a very -- is very angry about that and said it's up to harry reid to put up or shut up. a lot of other people say are saying, the one to put up or shut up is mitt romney himself. we get into that and continue to take your calls on that. but first, we wanted to take out the time out to check in with a good friend of ours, jonathan allen, senior washington correspondent for politico joining us on our news line this morning. hey, jonathan. how are you? >> doing well. how are you? >> all right. good to have you with us. you have been readingwriting a lot about the tea party. ted cruz winning that republican primary last week in texas beating rick perry's hand-picked candidate. what's that mean for the tea party? is it still alive and kicking? >> certainly, it's still alive and kicking.

we have seen several senate primaries this year now where a tea party candidate, somebody supported by the tea party, whether or not they actually identified as tea party has won at primary against a much more moderate opponent. you saw that, for instance, in indiana with richard murdoch. >> uh-huh. >> senator murdoch and ted fisher winning and now with ted cruz. you know i think one thing to remember and i think a lot of folks may not be focusing on this is the real changeover you are going to have from kay bailey hutchison who is a fairly moderate member of the senate at least by today's standards who will be replaced in all likelihood by ted cruz who will be in that jim demint camp. >> in fact we've gotten used to the tea party kind of controlling the house of representatives. right? that block of 63 that came in, in the mid-term election.

but so far, we haven't really seen that tea party influence as strong at least in the united states senate. the jim demint yes, rand paul. now there is mike lee from utah. right? >> that's right. >> with a ted cruz and others that could really change the complextion of the u.s. senate that could be the body that somehow or another was able to work together to get things done. >>could be the body that somehow or another was able to work together to get things done. >> >>? >> the flavor has changed right now. also, continuing that direction, i think the old. you will see the rise of senator demint. he is part of that as a backer of conservative candidates generally speaking, we are talking about in primaries, against incumbents but him, you know, freedom works, the group

for growth outside interest groups pouring money into can candidacy candidacynd candidacynds and tea party can dancies particularly are going to rise. they will have the ability to stop inflation whether it's the democrats moving it and get control of the senate and will be a block. we have seen this before. we have seen this before. we have seen this within a bloc within a party. it's not unusual. democrats had a strong liberal bloc in the southern democratic bloc for a long time. >> is it possible for a republican today to run against a tea party candidate and win? have we seen any evidence of that? orrin rachhatch. he became a tea partier to win his party's nomination. >> if you can't beat them, join them. >> nowhere to go. >> i think absolutely.

we have you on the line, we have been talking this morning a lot about harry reid calling on mitt romney to release his tax returns and saying he's been told, you know the whole story, there were years when he didn't pay anything at all. mitt romney demand that harry reid put up or shut up. how -- do you think this issue is working for democrats, and what's mitt romney going to do about it? >> i don't think the election is going to turn on this issue. certainly, democrats are continuing to keep up because they take advantage and that they put romney in a box. either he releases the tax returns which may show he doesn't want to or he holds them and now disclosure. i think harry reid is an interesting attack dog because he lives in a glass hotels room at the ritz-carlton in washington.

he, as senate majority leader has as much control over united states tax policy as anybody else and he has been asked to release his tax returns and won't do it. it's an interesting choice of the person to go after him. but i think that, you know it is working to the extent that it's got romney continuing to try to answer the question without actually answering the question. >> yeah. i mean last friday romney gives a news conference, wants to talk about the jobs report and all the reporters wanted to talk about were tax returns and about harry reid. so, you know, it's just the strategy, the strategy does seem to be working, and again, you have got to ask: haley barbour and ed rawlins and a lot have said. you have to ask why didn't romney put this to rest? he could do so in 10 minutes or less by putting out his tax returns. he has made the decision he is

while raising taxes on 25 million working families. >> the groups are releasing spots that will specifically attack five republican members of congress. those as will run nationwide on cable today and tomorrow. and speaking of taxes, the g.o.p. is taking quite an offense to harry reid's claims that romney did not pay taxes for 10 years. we heard earlier from bill what republicans had to say in interviews over the weekend. well, now, new details on romney's taxes. these come from his $12 million home in la hoja california. the los angeles times is reporting today that after paying cash for the home the rom neshingdz asked san diego county for property tax relief. the couple hired a lawyer to file a series of appeals saying that their home lost value during the market crash over the course of four years, those appeals saved the rom neshingdz $109,000 in property taxes. back with more bill after the

line. >> crab legs won't do it for you? >> no. >> all right, dan. thank you. sister simone campbell good to see you. this leadership conference of women religious, we first heard about it, most of us a couple of months ago, i think it was, when the vantican came out and said, hey, girls, you are off of the reservation here on a couple of issues. right? what was the vatican with -- >> it's hard to tell what's behind it. it's the result of an investigation that started back in 2007 -- excuse me. 2010/2010. and it was to assess the orthodoxy of the leadership conference of women religious. in june of 2010, bishop blair, who was the lead investigator, filed a report in rome and we didn't hear anything about it. the leadership conference didn't hear anything about it until this april. >> they didn't tell you what was in that report? >> no. no.

these are secret documents. >> okay. >> so in april, then they issued the censure, saying that there were some talks given at the leadership conference, the women religious assembly that's held every creek like the one coming up that they quoted one talk from, i think it was 2007 where a paragraph could be seen as suspect. they also said while we did lovely work as catholic sisters that w poor. we didn't work enough on the issues of abortion and same-sex marriage. the part that seems to be missed by the vatican is that the role of the leadership conference of women religious is to nurture the leadership of women religious in the united states within their own congregation. so it's for the leaders of the congregation to improve their skills, help their sisters figure out how to help communities move forward, and so that the aspect of same-sex

marriage and abortion, they really aren't the issues that the leadership conference deals with but the vatican seems to have missed that? >> well, what is this? where are they coming from in saying that you have spent too much time trying to help the poor or talking about the poor? didn't jesus talk about the poor in the gospels? >> seems like to me, seems to me that that's exactly what jesus did. and so i wear the critique kind of as a badge of honor. i am puzzled as to what the concern is, and it really seems not so much an issue of faith but an issue of politics within our country. and one of the challenges that we are facing is that much of the critique is about an identification with some portions of the political reality in our country and about what they believe are priorities. abortion and same-section marriage whereas the issues of working with the poor often get lost in the polafization of

politics. quite frankly, democrats and republicans have been a little slow in supporting. >> we talk a lot about politics on this program, and i don't want to drag you into it. >> thank you. >> but i do have to ask you this question: from what you can see, do you think for most americans, the most important issues are abortion and same-sex marriage? >> no. >> that's certainly not my experience. what i see is people really hungry in our nation for a sense of community for being connected, for being engaged. there is a great worry about what's happening to folks that are being left out of our economy. there is a great worry about the huge economic divide that keeps growing in our nation. and the shift of more and more wealth to the top while at the same time pushing more and more folks out of the middle class. those are the kind of concerns

we see. >> yeah, i think the vatican is reading the american public wrong or the american politic wrong if they think these are the two most important issues. i am sure i wish i had been able to go along for even a day. i am sure when you we want around country on nuns on the bus in nine different states and talking about the paul ryan budget plan and what it would do to the poor people were not standing up at your gatherings and saying, no. talk about abortion. >> absolutely. our experience was over and over, that thank heavens you are speaking about this. we are so grateful. reasonable revenue for responsible programs call on in a way that was very powerful. i think the challenge here, though, is cultural because the vatican sees themselves in the monarchy that -- literally they see themselves as kings. they think they set the agenda. they don't realize we come out of a democratic model where we believe in the conversation and, together, in the conversation, we find the truth. so they think they are setting the most important issue whereas

we are saying that's not where our hearts are. >> that's not where the gospel is. we need to follow our hearts. >> so the leadership conference the asemsembly begins in st. louis? >> yeah. >> you are going to be there? >> yeah. >> how many sisters? >> we think between 850, 900 are coming together. leaders of religious congregations around the united states. >> the purpose is -- one of the purposes is to decide how to respond to the vatican filing or censure? >> correct. that will be done in executive session. i won't be part of that. they also use it for nourishment, for talks being given. they are giving an award to sister saturday are a shiner for her amazing work in theology. it's about supporting and being -- developing our connections with each other. >> so what do you think the american nuns are going to say to the vatican? >> well -- >> are they going to say, yes father? >> my hunch is that there will

be much more nuanced that than and it will come out of a very deep place of prayer and offer for continued engagement. i think the thing that is really hard in this is that finding a way to be faithfully to our identity as women religious because the call of the holy spirit is much deeper than anything else. so how are we faithful to that call in a time where there is con it conflict, misunderstanding? it a really different perception of what our role is in society. it's that struggle i think we have to find a way through. >> sister simone campbell is our guest, head of the network executive director of network. you can for thellow her good work and her fellow sisters at network.org and you have a twitter handle? >> i do. >> her twitter handle is _

keynote address. hollywood producer harvey weinstein is holding a fundraiser for the president. about 50 people are planning to attend the weinstein's 15 and a half million dollar home angn hathaway will co-host. the cost is $35,800 a head. mitt romney is trying to save face after a rocky trip awe baud. out with a new ad touting his cherished relationship with israel and knocking the president for not traveling to the country in the last four years. authorities have just released the name of wade michael page as the suspect responsible for the wisconsin shooting over the weekend. that left seven people dead including the shooter. both the president and romney have expressed con doll he knew he is for the folks in wisconsin. law enforcement is saying page was an army vet and a white supremacist.

madam secretary in studio with us this morning. good to have you back madam secretary. >> how are you? >> that was a healthy report? >> it's much improved facts yes. much improved. in spite of the picking up what it means is that we are creating jobs and people are looking for jobs. the bottom line is we almost doubled the number from last month, 163,000 across the board except for local government. >> it was better than people anticipated? >> right. yes. >> unlike the previous month, which was lower than people anticipated. >> right. >> take us inside the numbers where the 163,000, where did they come from? what sectors show improvement? >> it's across the board but what's impressive is people need to understand the president made some early investments in manufacturing. right? the automobile industry, so that was an indicator there. there were about 25,000,000 jobs created in manufacturing, and you have to look at where we have come in the last 30 months

and we have had the strongest growth in manufacturing over 500,000 jobs in manufacturing, 250,000 in the automobile industry, and, this is i think, a direct result of the president's investments and some of the things we are doing with our training dollars to make sure people can get into apprenticeship programs. we see that paying off. >> that's a good way to bring jobs back home is good middle class jobs in business services, people say that's part-time. not necessarily. >> that's the first sign growth is going to occur. it's the next step to full-time employment. there are usual higher level tech jobs. we have 49,000 that were added this last month. in 12 months alone, 593,000. education and health,38,000. hospitality, good for tourism. that went up considering the last two months. overall, 29-month period,

4.5 million private sector jobs. still need to do more because there are too many people still looking for work. the president has two proposals up on the hill sitting there for 10 months that could create another million jobs in construction, for teachers and firefighters. >> the fact these jobs have gone up to 163, how000, how do you swear that with the unemployment went up to 8.3%? >> more people are also looking for work. so that gets counted in. and then you had some people that are pulling away from employment. my suggestion, though, to people that are still looking for work stay engaged. you have a better likelihood of finding a job if you go into the one-stop centers, 3,000, jet job coaching, resume writing. find out what training programs the president has supported and funded. get in. this is a time to make that clear. areas to look at in terms of

growth continued to be in health care, it the science, technology, engineering and math. >> how many months of not again -- you make this point when you come in, not as many new jobs as you want to see but how many straight months of positive job growth? >> twenty-nine. >> twenty-nine? >> yes. you have to remember, when we started, we were losing. right? we lost over 8 million jobs. in addition, in those first months action we lost 700 to 800,000 jobs each month. since the recovery act and all of the stimulus that the president put forward, including tax cuts for middle class families, all of that helped to stimulate our economy. so it kept 3 million people in, and now we have seen a creation of about 4.5 million private sector jobs. >> and i saw this morning -- here it is -- that mitt romney pledges that in his first term, he will create 12 million new

jobs. >> well, what i was told by some economists is that in a normal cycle, if everything were to go well, that's what anybody could expect. so it isn't just because he is saying it that it's going to happen. i mean there is a lot of conditions a lot of headwind. right? we don't know what's going to happen. but i think for him to come out and say that, obviously, it's, you know, he is trying to -- he is trying to look optimistic here we all want to be optimistic. the reality is, what jobs has he really created in the time that he was running his different business organizations and, you know, it just -- people need to look at the records. >> and when you look at president obama's records, and particularly when you look at where he started right, which was in a big hole a lot deeper than we thought, losing what was it? 750,000 jobs? >> yes. >> that first month? >> right. >> a couple of months, yeah. >> just digging out of that but

then you mentioned something else that seems to me we don't talk enough about. that is how many more jobs would be created if republicans in the house had only passed the jobs bills that the president obama had sent up to them. there is at least one dealing with infrastructure and construction work. correct? >> right. absolutely. >> that's a million jobs right there. >> and where is that legislation? >> it's hung up in the congress right now. >> wasn't there another one for public employees? >> yes. yes. >> firefighters and teachers? >> yes. absolutely. those are all middle class jobs bill. >> that's another bill that is hung up? >> right. >> you put the two of those together, you are probably talking about a million and a half jobs? >> and in addition, if we were to give the tax breaks to the middle class, those that make below 250,000, that's money that's going to be brought back into the economy. people will spend it.

that also acts as a stimulus. that will create more jobs. >> so what i never understand why doesn't the president or other than the administration, maybe including yourself go out and say, well, to republicans, you are saying you are not happy with the jobs? think how many more would be created. call them out and point the finger at them. don't you think we should do that? >> we are doing that in many ways and our friends in the communities are and that's why we continue to go out and dispel all of these myths that are out there regarding what we have done in the past three and a half years. we started at a hard place, like you pointed out. the president continues to move steadily ahead. i mean we know there are a lot of people out there that want to have better employment opportunities. but the very people who say they want to create jobs are actually blocking the access and ability

to get these pieces of legislation through. >> exactly? >> they were bi-partisan ideas that they came up with not so long ago. >> right. good point. i mean the highway traffic, highway safety bill, folks. >> right. >> always been -- >> bi-partisan, alsoways when i was in the house. >> not that long ago. >> right. >> and they were like five-year bills. right? >> yes. six-year if i remember, yeah. uh-huh. and the teachers, i mean come on. if we want to be come at the time president /* petitive we have to have good qualified teachers, now is the time not to let them go when we are not doing as well in the science, technology, we need to have more resources placed in education instead of taking away important investments that are going to pay off in the future. >> the farm bill was another example of legislation they walked away from, went off without passing a farm bill, that again, jobs.

>> tom vilsack has been talking about that all along an especially now as we see hardships for small farmers and the loan programs that need to be, you know, reauthorized and increased because many small farmers are going to be hurt badly. >> labor secretary hilda solis in studio for us with this one suggestment. follow what the secretary is doing and the labor department is doing at their website at dol.gov. madam secretary, i want to come back to people who are still out there, still hopeful, still looking for work. what should they be doing and what sector should they be looking at? >> they need to stay engaged. i would encourage them to vitsit or wibseat at www.dol.gov. if they don't have access to the internet, call us at 1866-4-usad'l. toll-free line. if they are looking for anything right now in particular go

online myskillsandmyfuture.org. it's user friendly. >> what sector? >> growing? >> they might consider? >> i would say health care, and i mean at the upfront, the ambulatory, the front office recordkeeping, people who want to be pharmacist aides, nursing assistants, and also areas in i, computer technology, always very helpful. and, also, look at apprenticeship programs. they actually pay you when you get en royal in an apresent isship program. make good salaries the there is a shortage of having people who really understand of how to work with advanced machinery. >> finally of course is the -- we know not just the private sector doing great but it's the public sector particularly that's being hammered. >> it has been hammered. >> by the cuts at the local

levelnd by the failure of congress to provide any assistance there. any hope that that could turn around because so many -- there are so many important public sector jobs, we mentioned teachers firefighters and police officers, but bus drivers and sanitation engineers, you go down the list? >> yeah. >> things we depend upon. >> bill, as the economy improves, you are going to see taxes being paid in to these local entities and the state. so that, then, will generate the ability to bring back these people. it's taking time. in some places, we can't afford to wait. there is proposals in the federal government right now before the congress. they can vote on this. the president puts them forward in the american jobs act. we should move. >> wouldn't it be high school? if they came back from vacation and did their job? >> another whole topic we will talk about one of these days. congratulations, manage secretary. another big month in august, but one 63,000 in july. it's certainly good news. not just for president obama but for the american people and the

some of you might have seen on cnn's reliable sources yesterday, where the subject came up of harry reid saying that he has been told by somebody that he knows who worked for bain capital that the reason mitt romney won't release his tax returns is because there were years in which he paid no taxes at all. that, of course, has mitt romney very, very upset and mitt romney is demanding of harry reid that harry reid put up or shut up. this topic came up yesterday on reliable sources. and howie kirth wanted us journalists to say harry reid is wrong. harry reid should not be making this unfunded charge. yours truly refused to go along with that. i insisted that the finger has to continue to be pointed at mitt romney. here is my exchange with howie.

and refusing to release his tax returns. too many journalists are falling into the republican trap set by mitt romney saying, let's shift the attention. let's shift the focus from romney to reid. no. no. no. no. this is not a democratic talking point. it's not a democratic talking point. it's just the truth. there is only one person who can clear this up. harry reid can't clear it up. harry reid doesn't have mitt romney's tax returns. he could name his source. but still, his source doesn't have his tax returns. there is only one guy who has got the tax returns. there is only one guy who refuses to release them even though hundreds of republicans have called on him to release them, including some of the biggest named republicans in the country like haley barbour and ed rawlins. only one guy who can clear this up and he can doing it in 10 seconds. you know what? there is a kinko's right across the street from our station.

okay? i will pay. i will give mitt romney a roll of quarters. he can go to kinko's and copy his damn tax returns and put them out there. the only guy who can clear it up is mitt romney not harry reid. and you know what? i hope harry reid just continues to repeat this over and over and over again. harry reid has mitt romney on the ropes. harry reid has shown some backbone.
