i begged mitt romney to pick paul ryan as his vice presidential running mate. i never thought he would be dumb enough to take my advice. now, it's official. mitt romney and paul ryan, the team that's going to get rid of social security, get rid of medicare and get rid of medicaid. what a great platform to run on. man. can't wait. so we will get into that from every angle today. but first, we get the latest, today's current news update from lisa ferguson joining us early this monday morning out in los angeles. hi lisa. hi, bill. good morning. happy monday. good morning, everyone. well well, as bill mentioned, obviously the big news of the day, romney has chosen paul ryan as his running mate. here is a quick look at what happened over the weekend. >> we know the principles that built this country and we are going to reapply those principles and leave our kids a better future. >> no doubt, we will hear plenty of analysis on ryan's policies over the days and weeks to am could. ryan is of course lodgely popular in his home state of

wisconsin where so far the largest part of romney's campaign welcomed the pair home. he has represented the first congressional district since '99, meaning he has beat out a slew of democratic challengers. we know he is chair of the house budget committee and built his reputation around a budget that would cult government spending by $5 trillion more than president obama's plan but romney made one thing clear on sunday in an interview with 60 minutes, that he is running on his own policies, not his running mate's. >>well, i had my budget plan, as you know, that i put out, and that's the budget plan that we are going to run on. >> the obama campaign is striking back just in case saying ryan's plan does not have the deficit-cutting power he claims. ryan also voted for several republican-backed bills during the bush administration that added trill ions to the national debt. we can likely expect a bit of a showdown today as both the president and ryan will be in

intellectual leader for the republican party. he understands the fiscal challenges exploding deficits and crushing debt and the fiscal catastrophfee that awaits us if we don't change course. the real question is that paul ryan the intellectual leader or ideological leader? i think it's the latter because he represents the most extreme elements of the republican party. he is the guy with grover norquist who wants to shrink government down to the size you could drown it in the bath tun. paul ryan takes the stage and immediately slams president obama. >> whatever the explanations whatever the excuses, this is a record of failure. >> yes, but president obama for his part was very gracious. he said he welcomed his -- speaking of paul ryan, said he was a good man. he is a family man. he has a lot of ideas.

pawlenty who is about as bland as he is but take somebody who has really got some, you might call them, bold -- i think they are craze -- ideas. but the problem is with that is that now rather than what usually -- the way it usually works. right? the vice presidential candidate sort of tags along on the term. now, the vice presidential candidate takes over the team because paul ryan's budget is so detailed in so many ways. romney hasn't put forth a plan. it's bold and risky and i think dangerous. i think it's a horrible choice for mitt romney and for the american people. number 1, what did dick cheney say just a couple of weeks' about sarah palin? he said she was a big mistake. why? he said she is a nice person. i like her. she is a good candidate but, he

said, the first test for a vice presidential candidate is you have to be. people have to believe that you are ready to take over the presidency at a moment's notice. really? paul ryan? he has zero executive experience, 42 years old. he has been in congress 13 years. zero executive experience. he's got maybe two years working for his daddy's firm like john boehner sweeping his daddy's bar, his father's construction firm in the case of paul ryan. so very, very limited private private-sector experience and romney says we need people with a business background to kind of run things? and did anybody look at his record in congress? in 13 years in congress, paul ryan has authored two bills, two bills. one to rename a post office. and the other to provide some tax relief for archers. he does archery.

i mean that's his sport. so he wanted to provide tax relief forair arrows. hardly a legislative fireball at all in the congress. the other thing about paul ryan is he has sponsored -- didn't just support. he sponsored the beatle personhood in the amendment. this would make a fertilized eg a person. this would say a fertilized eg gets all of the rights of any person like just you and me. this is so extreme it would even outlaw many forms of contraception. >> that's not just abortion but contraception. this is so extreme, the people of mississippi rejected it. can't get more extreme than that. this is something paul ryan sponsored. then, of course, he is best known for the ryan budget. it's passed the house twice. it is out there. there are no questions about what the ryan budget does.

the ryan budget does replace medicare with a voucher system, a limited voucher system like 2500 bucks. >> that's all you get. all of those millions and millions of americans who look forward to medicare. it ain't going to be there for you. medicaid, gets rid of. it says states, no need to do it. we will give you the money, you can do whatever you want to do. gets rid of medicaid. so it eliminates medicare as we know it. it gets rid of medicaid gives the wealthiest of americans another tax break going from 35%, which it is now under the bush tax cuts down to 25% raises taxes on the middle class, doesn't balance the budget at all for at least 30 years until 2040, and the first in the first version of his budget paul riney limnated social security and replaced it with a privatization scheme that george budge rejected.

gamble. i think romney offered options. >> how did they manage to keep it a secret? >> it's fascinating. mitt romney always told reporters who asked that only he and bess myers would know who the pick was. he was secretive. no one believed that. but it seems they kept it around a small group of very trusted people. they had good control on information. they managed on almost entirely stop blacks their selection process which is almost unfathomable in this age of 24/7 media. i give them a little bit of credit for that. >> do we know how many years of tax returns paul ryan had to make available for the vetting process? >> it is not clear. during an interview, paul ryan said he put forward several years. >> more than two, i bet. >> it sounds like more than two, but they didn't really drill down. there was a cbs interview with both governor romney and

congressman ryan. didn't drill down but he has indicated he will only be putting forth two years' of tax returns similar to what romney had done. >> as you point out, most people figured it would be pawlenty or maybe portman. ryan, the outside choice. what does it say about the romney campaign that he decided to go with ryan? >> what i feel is most striking about the choice of paul ryan is that he is a guy. he has big bold ideas. so far, this has been a campaign where i would argue that no one on either side really has been talking about these great ideas, but a particularly small campaign, some of the negative advertising, back and forth on both sides. i find that striking as well as the romney campaigns see a little bit of an opportunities in wisconsin where they campaigned last night with the choice of paul ryan. that will be interesting going forward as to how they deposit

ties them to give them new openings with voters they might not have had a chance with beforehand. >> clearly one could use the adjective bold. most people do. at the same time, what we are talking about is getting rid of mid care as we know it. right? totally changing that system, getting rid of medicaid. paul ryan actually at one time embraced privatization of social security and talked george bush into adopting it. so these may be bold ideas but are they winnable ideas? >> bill, that's a great point. one of the important thing we will watch over the next weeks is how far romney embraces paul ryan's ideas. >> he embraced budget. he is saying i want paul ryan but it's going to be my plan. he called paul ryan's plan marvelous. right? >> that's true. but what you say and how much the ideology make it into your

policy making are very different things. the question is how much does it matter? calling something morphs lus when you arearvel lus when you are. right but don't you think it gives democrats an incredible opportunity now to run against the ryan budget? >> i think it democrats -- i don't think it's any secret it gives democrats a graduate opportunity, the ones i have talked to so far, even before this pick was made said mall ryan would be who they favored. he is their pick. he thought it gives them a great opportunity to paint the election in terms of choice and that's the pick of paul ryan says more about the direction mitt romney wants to take this country in. democrats are elated about this choice. >> what is the romney campaign saying? it seems to me. you followed so closely. i'm so glad we could talk to you this morning that this really

does change the direction of the romney campaign. the romney campaign has been we need an outsider, somebody with business experience, not somebody from washington you know. total come out and change things up and focus on the economy and jobs. now, they pick, you know, an insider with his own bucket plan talking about, again, social programs and budgetary issues. this does change the nature of the campaign. doesn't it? >> i think this is a mitt romney's campaign when he talked about who he wanted his vice presidential pick, the number 1 quality he kept going back to was someone who is ready to serve on day 1. i think paul ryan said he fits that model this is a different pick. tim pawlenty two guys who have never been to washington working to take it over from the outside in.

extremist republicans love for a lot of reasons. is he somebody who can win some of those? jonathan in new york city what do you say? >> good morning. first of all, i was watching cnn over the weekend and i saw an interview with paul ryan from thursday. he was completely denying the fact that he was evening going to run for vice president. just the look in his face it was this robotic, vacant stare. he couldn't help but feel that he was the perfect, you know, pick. it was awful. >> i didn't see that interview. he was sworn to secrecy so he was probably squared he might give it away. what do you think he brings to the ticket, jonathan? >> gosh.

i think really isdrate for the democrats first of all. i think the biggest thing that he is the 1 that's behind the plan, i feel like. he is going to be the head in this relationship, the brains i guess. he is the one. he has no ideas of his own. >> i think this is a reverse ticket. it's the ryan-romney ticket when you think about it. the guy with the ideas, even romney calling him the intellectual leader of the party. romney has embraced his ideas. the ideas could not be more clear. if you believe social security is a ponzi scheme, if you think that medicare is a fraud and we ought to get rid of it and give people a voucher and let them go out and buy their own insurance as if they could get much for 2500 bucks and you believe that medicare is a scam and we ought to get rid of med -- medicaid.

attractive. >> yes. right. yeah. but romney's now stuck with them. how how can the republican party den that their platform now is right? to end medicare as we know it, eliminate medicaid, give the wealthiest another tax break, raise the taxes on the middle class and do nothing about the deficit until 2040, 2045? >> yeah. really what we are talking about here is that mitt romney with his choice, it's interesting. he picked a very nice guy. paul ryan is a very nice guy with some very very bad ideas. and ryan's problem is that he pretends that the last 25 or 30 years didn't happen. in fact, pretty much that the 20th century didn't happen. so he believes in an economic vision that says, well, you know, we live on sort of an island so if we make our

wealthiest very, very wealthy, give them dramatic tax breaks, that's the core of the plan. it's dramatic tax breaks that they will reinvest on our little island and that everybody will rise with it. now, it is possible in 19th century england under william gladstone that that might have worked. but i have news for you. the world went global. if you give massive tax breaks to the already unbelievably rich and the multi-national courses as paul ryan suggests, you are going to make a handful of americans very wealthy but they won't create jobs in the u.s. they won't reinvest. we know that but ryan persists in the fantasy. this is a very dangerous -- i don't go for the hyperbole. this is a dangerous set of policies for the united states in the 21st century.

ryan existed in a strange district. happens to be my hometown where i grew up. no district, there is no television station located within the district. the daily newspapers are small city dales not big ones. so he has kind of flown under the radar for a long time in wisconsin yet he has lived and worked in washington since 1992. he is not, you know, he is very popular with the republican base, with deep conservatives but not overly well known in the state. the striking thing about it is when he did his homecoming event yesterday, he didn't do it in his hometown. his hometown is zanesville wisconsin, hard hit by the industrization that votes democratic. he didn't take romney there. he took romney to the most republican county in the state,

walk waukashaw county. paul ryan does not deliver wisconsin. it's going to be a fight. wisconsin is almost always a fight, but the fantasy paul ryan is going to shift huge portions of wisconsinites into mitt romney's column is unrealistic and, i think, emblem at ilk of the reality of this choice. this choice is not about shifting states. this was about exciting debate. this does do that. >> a minute left john. what do you think this does for democrats? democrats, whether they are running for house or senate or for president or vice president? >> the thing to watch for, bill is the first moment, the first day at which a republican u.s. senate or congressional candidate let's it be known that even though paul ryan is coming to their state, they won't be able to appear with him. >> that's what it does for democrats. it creates the possibility up

morning, august 13th. first chance we had to talk about the paul ryan pick by mitt romney, and we have been talking a lot about this morning focusing mainly on his budget proposal which would certainly impact medicare-medicaid and if he had his way, social security. we haven't had a chance to talk about paul ryan's position on some of the social issues. to do that, welcome back into the studio a good friend of the program for huffington post political reporter laura bassett. good to see you. >> good to be here. >> so on the social issues, paul ryan's been out there. no doubt about where he stands. what's it mean for women? >> paul ryan is far out of the mainstream on women's issues, particularly women's health issues. he sponsored a fetal personhood bill which would give full legal rights to a fertilized egg. it was rejected by voters in mississippi, the most socially conservative state. >> the impact which would be not only to make abortion illegal

but many forms of contraception? >> contraception, in vitro fitterlization. it's got legal complications beyond what we could imagine right now. >> he sponsored that in congress? >> sponsored it. yes. was the primary sponsor. furthermore, he supported a bill that would allow hospitals to refuse to give abortion care to a woman who is -- who would die without it. so emergency, life-saving abortion care, there would be there for hospitals. the list goes on of the kinds of bills he supported. defunding planned parenthood not only planned parenthood but title 10, the national family planning program, he is opposed to it. there is that. of course, his bucket dismantles social security, medicare, medicaid, which, if you think about who is in nursing homes? women. who is employed by nursing homes? women. these disproportionately employ

him on those issues. he has avoided talking about birth control. he -- most social issues that come up, he says i think that the states should be able to handle those issues. >> that's usually his kind of throwing it under the rug. let the states handle t paul ryan does not feel that way. he has gotten in there. i mean he has 100% anti-abortion voting record, support of the blunt amendment type legislation which would let employers den i'm coverage for birth control for any reason. robert pair in "the new york times" talks about an interview ryan gave to "the weekly standard." it's a as conservative a magazine as you can find where they discuss the possibility of a truce on social issues, which for some republicans say, let's just agree we are where we are. you are for it. you are for it. you are against it.

currently on the program just future generations. according to the congressional budget office, there are some big problems with that plan. namely, the fact that the voucheraments do not increase with rising medical costs. that means that starting in 2022, seniors would have to pay more than $12,000 each out of pocket. the budget proposal is good news for romney, though, who would pay just .82% in taxes under ryan's plan. as for ryan's taxes we can expect him to release just two years, but he supposedly released quote several to romney's campaign. in an interesting note on chris christie who was reportedly at the top of romney's vp list, a romney insider is telling the new york post they could not pick christie because he refused to step down as governor in order to run. christie does not seem too upset and he could be announced as the rnc's keynote speaker as early as tomorrow. more bill press coming up and we are live in chat.
