convention rolls on. on tuesday night ann romney trying to reinvent mitt romney as a warm and fuzzy guy. last night paul ryan tried to reinvent himself as reasonable, almost a moderate. both attempts failed because neither one are true! as we will point out to you all through the program this morning. but first, we get the latest. today's current news update from lisa ferguson out in los angeles. hi lisa. good morning. >> hi, bill. good morning everyone. a romney pollster has already come out this week and admitted they're not going to let fact checking play a big role in their campaign. and that's pretty apparent after paul ryan's speech last night. so let's do a little fact checking of our own. first off and perhaps most notably, here's what we had to say about medicare. >> medicare is a promise and we will honor it. a romney/ryan administration will protect and strengthen medicare for my mom's generation for my generation
3:02 am
and for my kids and yours. >> what ryan did not mention is his own medicare plan which makes healthcare more expensive for seniors by giving them vouchers or coupons that do not cover the entire cost. ryan's original budget plan called for cuts to medicare to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy. now he says he would restore the cuts but that only speeds up the time line before medicare runs out of its trust fund money. next up is ryan's claims about an auto plant in his state. ryan, of course, has been very outspoken against the bailout and government spending even though he asked for bailout funds in wisconsin. last night he criticized obama for not using more government money to help a g.m. plant in janesville. he obviously did not re-up on his history there either. that plant closed under the bush administration well before obama took office. and lastly, ryan blamed the president for downgrading america's credit rating but the real reason there was the g.o.p.'s refusal to raise the debt ceiling and of course, ryan

3:14 am
to admit that was one good thing, you do get to see these candidates and for the first time, most americans including me got to see paul ryan. i must say i kept thinking of him as a young guy that you might expect to see waiting on your table at the tortilla coast. by the way absolutely crappy mexican restaurant on capitol hill. i think i went there once long, long before we moved to washington. it is worst mexican restaurant i've ever been in. >> i've never gone in. >> bill: it is down right alongside, six blocks away. >> it has all of the warning signs of a bad mexican restaurant. >> bill: it is bad. it is the closest to the capitol. paul ryan used to wait on tables there. he looks like a guy who would walk up to a table and say "you want a margarita"? or what he really reminded me of was a high school student. he looked like a high school student. he's 42 years old.
3:15 am
looks like a high school student in a public speaking contest trying so hard to make his points and delivering the sentences that obviously have been written by somebody else for him. the good part about it was i must admit paul ryan gave a good red meat political speech. he gave the speech that i expected chris christie to give full of rousing one-liners to rev up the crowd like his first -- almost the first line out of his mouth. >> after four years of getting the run around, america needs a turnaround and the man for the job is governor mitt romney. >> bill: everybody jump to their feet. that was a good part of the speech. it was a partisan -- you know, rev them up red meat speech. the bad part was it was a pack of lies! one lie after another. i couldn't believe it. i mean i've never seen such
3:16 am
deliberate attempt to deceive the american people from a convention floor. never, never never. look, sometimes you hear this stuff. like the nra's going around saying barack obama's re-elected. he's going to take away every gun in america. right? that's total nonsense. there's no evidence of that. he hasn't done, unfortunately anything about guns in his first four years. no evidence he'll do anything. but that's sort of predicted. it can turn out to be true or not true. not true. it will turn out to be. but ryan was lying about stuff that's already happened. bold bold lies. let me start with -- and here are six of them that i identify -- i'll tell you them real quickly. these are only the six that i picked up last night. but let's start with the g.m. plant. the g.m. plant in his hometown of janesville, paul ryan. >> right there at that plant candidate obama said "i believe
3:17 am
that if our government is there to support you this plant will be here for another 100 years." that's what he said in 2008. well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year. it is locked up and empty to this day. >> bill: what he doesn't say is that plant didn't close when barack obama was president it closed under george w. bush! he also doesn't say of course, that mitt romney was for shutting down every single g.m. plant and every single chrysler plant! big lie to the american people. at least give barack obama credit for saving the american auto industry because he did. let's move on. lie number two. he talks about the stimulus as being a total bust. >> what did taxpayers get out of the obama stimulus? more debt. that money wasn't just spent and wasted. it was borrowed, spent and
3:18 am
wasted. >> bill: what did taxpayers really get out of the stimulus? by the way he didn't say he voted for the stimulus. he voted for it once the bush tax credits were extended, paul ryan voted for the stimulus. he sent four letters to the secretary of energy, asking for stimulus money for his district. what did voters get out of it, 3.2 million jobs according to the congressional budget office and 95% of americans got a tax cut out of the stimulus. almost half the stimulus went to a tax cut for the american people. paul ryan. lie number two. lie number three. he talked about obama care saying that obama care was putting the federal government in charge of healthcare when, in fact, as we know, the federal government has nothing to do with obama care. it just says that everybody has to buy private insurance. 36 million americans have to buy insurance from a private company. there is no public plan option. fourth lie.
3:19 am
he talked about obama cutting $716 billion. we've heard this before on the campaign trail. here he is in front of the world repeating this accusation, lie number four against president obama. >> $716 billion funneled out of medicare by president obama. [crowd booing] an obligation we have to our parents and grandparents is being sacrificed to pay for a new entitlement we didn't ask for. >> bill: he doesn't tell the american people that the same, same exact same $716 billion cuts is in his budget which he and every house republican voted for and the $716 billion comes out of insurance companies and hospitals. does not come out of medicare benefits. it is a big lie. on the next lie, number five. he talked about the fact that the credit rating of the united states has gone down under
3:20 am
president obama. >> it began with a perfect aaa credit rating for the united states. it ends with a downgraded america. >> bill: why? because house republicans were playing games with the debt ceiling. remember that's why the credit companies -- credit rating agencies rather downgraded america's credit. because the republicans wouldn't raise the debt ceiling which they've always done automatically. president obama was begging them to. urging them to. they refused to do it. they're responsible, not president obama and finally lie number six paul ryan attacked president obama for not accepting the recommendations of the simpson bowles committee without telling us, the american people, that he was on the simpson bowles committee! he sat on if and he voted against it! paul ryan voted against it! how could the guy just lie through his teeth that way to the american people? and those dumb ass republicans
3:21 am
in the crowd had no idea what he was saying. all they did was cheer every line because it sounded good. no idea what the facts are! that's why we're here to make sure the american people know the truth. let me tell you. don't just take it from me. fox news summed up the -- they said there are three words to describe -- this is fox news! three words to describe paul ryan's speech last night. dazzling distracting and deceptive. fox news called it deceptive. it was. it was nothing but a pack of lies! do you think they're going to get away with this? 1-866-55-press. you and i have to make sure they don't. let's talk about it! 1-866-55-press. hey, i told you, six lies i picked out. big fat ones. maybe you saw even more or heard even more. give us a call here on the "full court press." we got it. paul ryan, we're on your case,

5:10 am
she was well spoken up there. but it's hard for -- pure politics, it is hard for anybody to come off natural when they're talking to millions of people about their of a action for another human being. not everybody is an actor or an actress. i don't think ann romney has it so to speak. she's a perfectly capable woman. that's just not one of her talents. >> bill: no. i mean everybody said it was the best speech of the night. but of course, compared to chris christie, who really kind of bombed. >> everybody said well she's a better speaker than mitt. that's a pretty low bar right? i'll give both of those. but still -- >> well, you know, in the case of chris christie, there was a whole bunch of republican governors, a gaggle of republican governors that spoke i guess the day before yesterday now at the convention. >> bill: and some yesterday, too. >> they were all kind of the ones that didn't run in 2012 or were doing hail marys at church with their fingers crossed that
5:11 am
romney wouldn't tap them to be his running mate. these are the people that are auditioning for 2016. and you heard a lot more about their personal stories and their supposed accomplishments. remember, these accomplishments all happened under the horrible reign of obama but they happened nonetheless, they were the focus of the speeches. and the brown nosing with the attacks on president obama then you heard about their praise or affinity for mitt romney. it was like watching an episode of "america's next top model" where the contestants talk about themselves and pat themselves on the back, ignore the person who just won who will never go on to be a top model or president anyways. >> bill: certainly christie. i keep seeing 16 minutes into his speech before he acknowledged that mitt romney was the nominee. >> i realize we cannot hold everybody to the standard that obama set in 2004 but you know, this was probably right up there in terms of bad timing and
5:12 am
everything else as clinton in 1988. he was a better speaker, he spoke too long. it was a poor showing all around. chris christie missed a golden opportunity to have everybody talking about him in the republican party and they're not. >> bill: so when you look at that -- before we get -- i want to talk about paul ryan but before we get there i've been on the floor -- i don't know how many republican conventions. watching this one last night and the night before on television, every time the camera pans -- have you seen a black face in the crowd yet? have you seen a brown face in the crowd? have you seen anybody but a sea of old white -- there are some young ones, too i must admit. >> there are some anchors from various news outlets that are of color. no, i mean, this is a party that is of itself, mostly white male older crew. you know, i remember being in st. paul in 2008, sitting at a

starbucks downtown not far from the convention center when news came down that sarah palin had been picked to be the running mate. and a lot of my democratic friends would say why would you go to a republican convention? i can't tell you how much fun it was watching octogenarians pull their jitterbug smart phones out to hear the news of sarah palin and lift their heads up to say who the heck is sarah palin. that's the problem this party faces. it is a demographic problem which is why they've put in all of the voter i.d. laws and voter suppression tactics because if you're faced with the problem of a shrinking electorate for yourself and a surging one for your opposition, you can do one of two things... you can change your policies to attract these growing number of voters. or you can change the rules. they chose the latter. >> bill: in some states, they're getting away with it. paul ryan, first time, i must admit, i -- as close as i follow this stuff right i mean i've read a lot about him. i had never seen paul ryan
5:14 am
deliver a speech until last night. most americans of course, had not. and the reviews this morning even fox news said his speech was dazzling but deceptive. "washington post" has a headline this morning paul bryan's breathtakingly dishonest speech. he told a whole pack of lies. can he get away with it? >> yes. that's what they're banking on. so in 2008, you had sarah palin saying what's the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull, the lipstick. what's the different between a p90x dad and a cat burglar sociopath? >> bill: oh, my gosh. i don't know. ryan is a p90x dad. >> cat burglar can fool a lie detector. the romney team doesn't even care that paul ryan's triggering it left and right. they brag about it. their own pollsters for crying out loud say we won't be

5:16 am
the letter was written to president george w. bush. signed by paul ryan. so these are not misstatements. these are calculated lies. they're calculated deceptions to fool the american people. >> bill: and the $716 billion calculated lie. the fact that the simpson bowles commission, president obama didn't approve its recommendations. paul ryan was on the commission. >> he must have just forgot. >> bill: i've never seen anybody -- more brazen string of lies. >> it is as if they wrote the speech two months ago before they had a vice presidential running mate and said here, kid run with this. >> bill: and forget about anything else. >> we'll paste your bio into it a little bit but these are the attacks we're going after obama on and we're sticking with it. >> bill: you saw it, you heard the lies last night from paul ryan. let's talk about it at 1-866-55-press with karl frisch from bullfight strategies. here as a "friend of bill" this entire hour. we've got lots of time to get to your calls when we come right

5:29 am
last few weeks about indications of global warming. in fact, being already here. the wildfires the drought the extreme temperatures we've had. increased storm activity. the latest is this headline this week arctic sea ice melted to record low levels this summer. the national snow and ice data center reporting. we thought it would be a good time to check in with our friend joe romm who is head of climate progress. climate progress.org. the editor of climate progress, i should say. joe, good morning. good to talk to you. >> hey bill, thanks for having me. >> bill: what do we know about the melting of the sea ice and why is it important? >> well it normally sets the record for being the least amount of ice near the end of september. and we just set the record for
5:30 am
the least amount of ice and this is the sea ice -- a few days ago. a month ahead of schedule. it is still losing ice at a staggering rate. it is not the ice that raises sea levels because that's only ice over land just like an ice cube in your glass, when it melts, it doesn't raise the level of the water but it is incredibly important for a bunch of reasons. one of which is that ice is white and reflective and as it melts away, the ocean which is blue and absorbs a lot more of the sun's energy so you get the warming of the arctic ocean which is a feedback effect which then melts more ice. and that's one of the reasons why we're seeing ice melting so much faster than people thought. and as the arctic warms up and it is warming two to three times faster than the rest of the planet it accelerates the warming up there and that's why greenland -- the greenland ice
5:31 am
sheet melts which can raise sea levels that is accelerating also thanks to this effect. and i think the other key thing that people need to understand is that there's now emerging science that the loss of arctic ice is actually partly responsible for the tremendous amount of extreme weather that we're seeing here down in the united states. if you can believe it. >> bill: the warming -- i'm the last one to start talking science but my understanding is the warmer the water the more fierce the hurricanes can become right? because they depend on warmer waters to be able to pick that up and then as we're seeing with hurricane isaac. >> yes that's absolutely true. as the planet warms the oceans warm and that puts more water vapor in the atmosphere and what goes up must come down. these super storms, isaac is a lot like irene. it wasn't a powerful storm but
5:32 am
it was big and slow-moving which meant it could suck in a huge amount of this extra water vapor in the atmosphere and then dump it. and that is exactly what isaac is doing. you know, irene which obviously slammed the east coast last year was the most destructive category one hurricane in history. so we're seeing, you know, more destructive storms even when they're only category one. so yes, that's absolutely the case. global warming leads to more intense deluges. but this loss of arctic ice also appears to weaken the jet stream. and the jet stream is what drives weather quickly through the united states and with this weaker jet stream, systems get stuck. and that's what we've been seeing. that's why we had this unbelievably hot march. it is why we had this unbelievably hot july. it is because these weather patterns get stuck because in part the jet stream is getting weaker. >> that's why i'm so comfortable with the republican majority because of their respect for science and technology.
5:33 am
i mean i trust that todd akin, as one of the leaders of the science committee, looks at this information in the same way that you do. with critical reasoning and has decided we better do something. and that he's not like the other people in this party who believe that science like letters shapes numbers and the media have a liberal bias. >> well, you know, it certainly is one of the great tragedies that one party has become so anti-scientific. we just celebrated -- we just remembered neil armstrong. we use science to put 12 men on the moon and get them back. >> get your hands off my moon, you comi. >> we use science to create the computing power in your phone has more computing power than neil armstrong's entire apollo rocket did. so this is what science does. you can't just say ooh, i'm
5:34 am
going to believe this science but then i'm going to ignore science when it tells me something that i really don't like to hear such as hey greenhouse gases are called greenhouse gases because they trap heat and they make extreme weather more extreme. >> bill: they're always going to be a couple of total nut jobs like jim inhoff and others, right, that will convince everybody. when do we get to the point where you just say look, we're just not going to listen to those chicken little people. >> george w. bush said he believed that global warming was real and for a party that doesn't believe in evolution there's nothing more apparent. they must believe in -- you know devolving because mitt romney doesn't believe in climate change. paul ryan doesn't believe in climate change. and that's -- a backwards retreat compared to george w. bush even. >> bill: i keep asking -- every time we talk about this, joe, when are we going to get to the point where people will say all right look, let's just move
5:35 am
on and deal with this problem and stop paying any attention to the deniers. >> it is a challenge only because -- you remember the tobacco industry and how long the tobacco industry spread this information and fought off claims that -- and the tobacco industry has a lot less money than the fossil fuel industry. the fossil fuel industry is making hundreds of billions of dollars a year. exxon mobil you know and the refiners and the people like the kochs. so unfortunately, they have a vast amount of money to spread this disinformation and it is going to take some -- you know, republicans with some guts to say you know, this is hurting our own states. states like oklahoma which is land of deniers, has been slammed by the most brutal heat wave and droughts. >> if they would only pray more. >> bill: we're talking with joe romm, editor of climate progress over at think progress.
5:36 am
you can follow joe's good work on this issue at climateprogress.org. joe, i have to point out this is an important -- i'm glad to you have on the show today. you have a new book out which has nothing to do with climate change. it is about language intelligence. name of the book, language intelligence. lessons on persuasion from jesus, shakespeare lincoln and lady gaga. now whoever thought that jesus would be in the same sentence with lady gaga. >> lady gaga did. >> bill: but you have written a piece for huff post, the headline of which is "will we elect a president with no language intelligence and should we" and it is all about mitt romney. now, mitt romney is speaking tonight at the convention, joe. what are you saying? what do you mean when you say he doesn't have any language intelligence? >> well, he is just a guy who can't speak off the cuff without making some sort of a gaffe and he has to be carefully scripted
5:37 am
but even his scripts haven't been very good. >> bill: even his scripted speeches aren't very good. >> these trees are just the right height. >> bill: do you mean speaking skills? >> language intelligence is the ability to be persuasive and memorable. and the book lining wage intelligence -- language intelligence goes through what are the secrets of the greatest communicators. it is not complicated. use short words use a lot of repetition and use the figures of speech like metaphor and you may remember bill clinton's famous -- his convention speech for his re-election, he talked about building the bridge to the 21st century. that's a great metaphor. you can visualize it. he repeated it two dozen times. and it is what we remember about the speech. and it is inspirational. [ laughter ] >> never going to use the word inspirational and mitt romney. >> if he gave a speech like that, he would probably say something like my friends, we're going to get a bunch of people that are athletic people that
5:38 am
are into sport and we're going to construct a device that would let us go from one side of a vast sea of water to the other as if it is like moving the country in the direction that would be considered not backward but perhaps this way forward. >> or he might have said we'll build a yacht to the 21st century. >> bill: flying the cayman islands flag. [ laughter ] >> the point i was trying to make in "the huffington post" piece is it does matter if your president isn't a great communicator. all of the great presidents, the ones at the top of the list your lincoln, your jefferson both roosevelts, even a guy like ronald reagan, the people who are viewed as successful presidents, these are people who communicate because a lot of the president's job is a, talking to the public. and b talking to world leaders and cajoling members of congress and if you're just really bad at that, you're not that likely to
5:39 am
be a great president. >> when you think of -- especially the ones in the media age, the ones that you mentioned, the ones that are in the media age you that mentioned all had that ability to comfort the american people during either national tragedies or during times of war. i mean you've got reagan with the space shuttle over florida. you've got roosevelt with the war, the second world war. and clinton you know, the oklahoma city -- i don't think romney has that depth of empathy to do that. >> bill: it is an important piece. i'm glad we're able to talk to you about it. one more reason for voting against mitt romney.
