asking where are the jobs? we were saying -- first of all when you get up staged by a chair at your own convention but mitt romney's speech got the lowest of any in history. >> it was a flat monotone speech. and the reason is they don't want to tell you what is in the plan. because by design it gives seniors a voucher that becomes less valuable as healthcare costs go up. they cut deeply into the investment in our students future, and they do it all to provide another round of tax breaks for folks at the very top while they raise middle class taxes by about $2,000 for the

typical family. so that's why they don't want to tell how they are going to do it. >> stephanie: it was very touching paul ryan and his grandmother, but people were saying if this is so great, why can't we have it now? >> that's right. that's one question. and the other thing -- and this is really important, while the voucher plan may not kick in for ten years other changes they are making to medicare will begin immediately. if you are a senior you will pay more not ten years from now, but right now, because in obamacare we closed the so-called doughnut hole. they reopened it. in obamacare we want to encourage seniors to be able to get more health care. when romney says he doesn't want to take the savings that we got,

which even paul ryan took in his budget those are savings we achieve by stopping overpayments to private insurance countries when romney says they want to restart the overpayments, seniors are going to pay more. >> stephanie: right. right. congressman we were talking about it's always good to have the last year and who decides that every year? >> my understanding is there's some formula, either your alternate or the party in the white house goes last, again, i don't know. >> stephanie: right. if only the president were a good speaker, we might have something to look -- [ laughter ] >> stephanie: in this gallup poll has the highest rating ever. we have michelle obama to look forward tonight.

involved in people's lives in the bedroom, there's a big role right there. so they claim they don't see the role. and the government will get involved when it comes to all of the things like preventing people from having an exception to the right to abortion after rape. it is right in their platform. >> stephanie: congressman we have had a lot of concern, and we have had a lot of big victories, in fact in ohio. how are you feeling about that? because it's not one state that they are doing everything they can to suppress turnout. >> yeah, here we are the greatest democracy on earth, and here they are out there

blatantly trying to pass laws in states that limit people's ability to vote. >> stephanie: and they are not bright enough to remember which things you don't say out loud like this will help governor romney win pennsylvania. >> that's right. romney is in because we're keeping all of the voters out. >> stephanie: john boehner went on record saying we hope they don't turn out. obviously he was trying to make a point about the economy, but he basically said we hope they don't turn out -- is that a policy strategy? >> here the united states is a beacon of democracy to people around the world, and our republican leaders are saying to americans, we're going to make it harder for you to vote. >> stephanie: right. and one thing that is very key

is voting is a right. it's not like driving is a privilege it's a right. >> that's right. and we have had big struggles in this country to make sure everybody has that right. so republicans are working very hard to turn back the clock when it comes to people's voting rights. it's a scandal. and the reason is they figure if they can limit people from voting, that -- the big money guys will be able to call the shots in the agenda. i guess we shouldn't have been surprised but during the % republican convention in tampa they had this big yacht show up to thank all of the romney dones or and it turned out it was from the cayman islands. >> stephanie: that's right. >> so mitt romney can send jobs

overseas -- a lot of companies set up these fake fronts in the cayman islands, it's a way to offshore american profits and american jobs. >> when the president points that out he is angry and full of rage. >> stephanie: if you say you believe in america and you want to be the leader of america and you invest your money in the cayman islands and switzerland. >> stephanie: that's right. he parked a lot of his personal money in switzerland. and a big debate in this country is reforming the american tax code. so i think it would be indestructive to see how mitt romney used those loopholes.

and the cayman islands is a clairing example where a lot of american corporations will park their profits overseas and by setting up their -- their sort of headquarters there, they actually can funnel their profits through there, and reduce the taxes here at home at the same time they are offshoring american jobs. >> stephanie: yeah. >> so this is a big issue. >> stephanie: congressman real quick before you go what is going to be the theme? >> tomorrow we'll hear from bill clinton, and, look -- here is the thing. when bill clinton was president, we took an balanced approach to the economy and to reducing the deficit, right? so bill clinton said we have got to make these important investments in jobs and the economy, and we're going to ask

work now. >> stephanie: how would this happen? said i this many times on the air, that teachers and firemen and policemen have become like the entity. i mean it's really -- there -- i don't understand how routing for less teachers became a good thing. they almost have routed for public layoff. and unemployment would be a full point lower if we just had the same public employee growth as we did under george bush. >> that's absolutely right. and they have been successful in making us the enemy. but that's a part of the ball game and their plan. their plan is to have as much power as they possibly can. we are the last line of defense here, and we're going to form our coalitions form our

alliances, work like we did in ohio. develop though coalitions all over this country, and working with the 99% who want to have a skin in the game if you will. >> stephanie: lee, i am with you on that. and we talked about healthcare in the last segment. that's one example, where romney is running on repealing it entirely. and you look at all of the components of the president's bill, and they are very popular. the republicans have done such a good job demonizing it i think we have had a hard time defeating that. >> stephanie: yes, it helps seniors all of those things. >> stephanie: exactly. it seems we can start to turn that pr battle around.
