war with my hair. i've not been able to get a bang trim -- oh i thought you were going to make a joke. my bangs are too long and the humidity. i'm out. i'm a -- dressing like a girl. we're live from the democratic national convention in charlotte, north carolina. jim, you mentioned governor duvall patrick taking it to him last night. let's take a listen. >> this is the president who delivered the security of affordable healthcare to every single american in every corner of this country after 90 years of pride. this is the president who brought osama bin laden to justice, who ended the war in iraq and is ending the war in afghanistan. >> i could have done that! >> this is the president who ended don't ask don't tell so that love of country not love of another determines fitness for service. who made equal pay for equal work the law of the land. >> yeah. >> this is the president who

saved the american auto industry from extinction, the american financial industry from self-destruction, the american economy from full-blown depression. who added 4.5 million private sector jobs in the last two and a half years more than in george bush's eight years in office. >> so? >> stephanie: i underspoke. i said three and a half because i'm still drunk. 4.5 million jobs. we're joined now i love this. van jones is sick because he was at the same party as i was at, i think. until 1:00 in the morning. ian kim joins us from rebuild the dream. we're so thrilled you could make it. >> how you doing? >> stephanie: i'm buying he was sick. he was doing a lot of media and parties. i'm sick but i'm here in a baseball cap. >> van doesn't party. he woke up and couldn't make it happen. thanks for having me on the show. >> stephanie: he has been on before. he's awesome. you guys are all doing such great work. i was at a party in l.a. where

van spoke a few months ago. the whole -- everything you guys are doing i think is so incredible. there were a lot of impressive people at the party and everybody was blown away. >> thank you. >> stephanie: give us your impressions. obviously talk about rebuild the dream for a second and your impressions of last night. >> rebuild the dream is where -- we're a national organization with 600,000 members across the country, every congressional district standing up for the middle class. standing up for a sane conversation in this country about the economy. and you know, and we're called rebuild the dream because we're about the american dream and dr. king's dream of opportunity for all. >> stephanie: well and obviously van was such a -- been such an influential voice in green jobs, for instance. but i thought -- isn't that statistic what it's all about right there? as the president has said, we're not where we need to be on jobs but to me, that refutes the right wing talking point right there. he's created more jobs than george bush created in eight.

it doesn't matter what other numbers or statistics you throw around, does it? we're on the right track. we're not losing 800,000 jobs a month anymore. we're gaining not enough but certainly we're going the right direction. >> absolutely. last night was such a reminder of all of the things that have happened in the last four years that we need to remember and be proud of. that we pushed for as progressives. you know whether it's healthcare reform or the 4.5 million jobs or bringing osama bin laden to justice. i thought that last night was a great series of victory laps for our side that i wish, actually, the obama administration had done a better job of doing the last four years. >> stephanie: i thought the same thing. i'm in the hall last night. and i think it was during duvall patrick's speech. really smart involved progressive and political -- >> yes. >> stephanie: when governor patrick said that statistic he said is that true? yes!

you're absolutely right. people resonated when he said you know, we have to grow a spine. democrats need to grow a spine. >> that was such a great moment. when he said the democrats get a backbone. >> stephanie: get a backbone. >> he was the only person last night to say that. it was such a beautiful challenge. i'll take that back. michelle obama said we have to work hard for what we want. >> stephanie: right. i thought she -- you know, just so classily as she is, really made the point about as my sister pointed out at the top of the show about when you made it, reach back and help somebody else, don't shut the door behind you and barack has always thought -- basically being wealthy is not the most important thing in the world. it is what you give back and who you help. which is obviously what rebuild the dream is about. let's take a listen to michelle obama from last night. >> after so many struggles and triumphs that have tested my husband in ways i never could

have imagined, i have seen firsthand that being president doesn't change who you are. no. it reveals who you are. [ cheers & applause ] >> stephanie: you know, it is interesting. i thought one of the best lines i don't know who it was jim but basically, when you talk about really being able to state your accomplishments with a spine but the whole bin laden is dead. g.m. is alive. pretty good one. right there. let's start there. >> that was joe biden that said that. >> stephanie: right. he's known for usually being so kid gloves. >> what a gas that was. >> stephanie: he needs to stop shooting his mouth off. >> how dare he. angry. >> stephanie: exactly. what else -- i mean obviously i think a great first night. what else are you hoping for? i think again, i feel to me, this will be -- bill clinton tonight. how do you -- and then obviously we know the president will give a great speech thursday.

what else are you hoping to hear from the upcoming days? >> well, you know, i think that progressives are looking for a way to be reminded of why they were excited about this campaign four years ago. last night was such an awesome start. to be reminded of that. >> stephanie: i was in denver and i don't know about you but it was the same excitement in the hall last night for me. i mean people were going crazy for michelle obama and julian castro. >> julian castro is amazing. you know, marco rubio take that! so i hope that we can remind ourselves of why we're here and also remember it's not just to get a president re-elected but also to revive a movement to back the president and to pressure the president on the things that we really need. >> stephanie: we took it up a notch, jim. marco rubio upstaged by a chair

she connected the themes of that. >> that's right. >> stephanie: i have to say i thought the republican convention clearly was in such disarray. you had -- not to disparage ann romney. she gives a lovely speech but my point is she comes out and says it is all about love and chris christie comes out immediately after and says it is not about love. it is about respect. then clint eastwood who clearly -- >> he missed the memo completely. >> stephanie: he missed every meeting. you're like going what is the theme? what is the theme here? whereas last night, even day one, beautifully choreographed in terms of the theme and a through line. >> and by the way, it was all based on truth. very very significant. let me tell ya, what michelle obama did is -- and i'm used to hearing speeches. what she did was she talked about their marriage, of course. but she also talked about how

their lives were quite similar. but she did something else. she talked about the pain, that pain being turned into passion that passion being turned into purpose and that purpose being turned into a mission. and basically when you think about some of the things she said, like, for example student loans. she gave you the reason why it means so much. it is not political. it is about hey i've been there. i know what it feels like. that's what you're saying. that's why he cares about the students. that's why he almost doubled the amount of pell grants. so i could go on and on. >> stephanie: i thought so, again, sort of delicately -- >> chiding mitt romney. >> stephanie: obama could have made zillions of dollars on anything he wanted. they say it like a snotty thing. he chose to use his talents to help other people. that's why most people, this morning, i think the one line that stands out is when you've made it, reach back and help somebody else. don't slam the door behind you. life isn't all about just making

money. >> the other thing i tell people is that i tell ya, i listen to a lot of the republican convention and we heard a lot of compelling stories. we really did. >> stephanie: yeah. >> but the thing that was so significantly different is they talked -- our folks last night talked about their difficult lives and by the way they didn't have to go back two or three generations. they talked about experiencing it like right now. they've done that. but they also talked about their success and that they wanted other people to come up the ladder of opportunity and they did not want to do what i think the republicans want to do. that is pull the ladder up and burn the damn thing. >> stephanie: well, again representative, i was saying last week, condoleezza rice, impressive woman. impressive speech but you know, you can't deny -- look at your party, if you're talking about voting rights, state's rights,

your party is not for the story you're talking about. >> i'm so glad you talked about voting rights. it is something that is so emotional for me because my great grandfather great, great grandfather came out of slavery in 1865 and one of the first things he did stephanie was to register to vote. he joined the voter rolls in 1868. almost 150 years later i got tab fighting over the right to vote? and damn it, you got this man romney who gets up there talks about how he cares about america, how he wants everybody's vote. how are you going to ask me for my vote when you're trying to take it away from me? >> stephanie: listen, i'm a girl. i'm out there with my sign saying i'm protesting this crap again? for women? i really do. i feel like we're in 1950 something again. >> i love this country so much, i put all of my money in the cayman islands and switzerland.

sucks to be you, ha ha. >> give me a break. my wife was telling me about when she was in college a lot of the students, the only kind of healthcare they got was through planned parenthood. i don't know that much about that kind of thing. come on now. keep in mind, it was my committee, oversight and reform where we found sandra fluke and we wanted her to testify and they said she was not qualified to testify on contraception but still they had these priests that were. >> stephanie: all men. you can't write this stuff. you can't write you'll have a women's health hearing with all men testifying. >> on a serious note, this is the other thing that concerns me. this should be a no-brainer. it shouldn't even be close. i'm just hoping that people -- i

was telling my staff this morning, you know, we sit inside the beltway and we listen to this and we get all excited and everything but we've gotta take this to the streets and make sure that people get out there and vote. >> stephanie: representative, i think that you know, we just talked about voter suppression. we've won a couple of big victories in texas and ohio. but i also have to -- as you say, you cannot say too strongly, there is so much money on the other side. thanks to citizens united. you have to hope that you mobilize mobilize, mobilize, get out and vote. figure out what it is you need. voter i.d. in your area early because i have to tell you i sense anger for so many different reasons among women among black folks among hispanic folks. this has been, to me, we just watched the primary. the most racist, sexist, homophobic primary and mitt romney ran to the right in order to win the nomination. >> which is sad. you know, yesterday ann romney said something to the effect

that her husband was the right person on women's rights and we needed an adult to deal with women's issues. and that really upset me. very much. because you've got this president who -- the first bill he signs is the lilly ledbetter fair pay act. and of course mitt romney said -- he had to call you back to let you know how he stands on it. give me a break. >> stephanie: like sarah palin, he had to gather that information and get it back to you. by the way, tony do we have cut six? this was the thing of beauty about healthcare last night. mayor julian castro last night. >> when it comes to getting the middle class back to work, mitt romney says no! when it comes to respecting women's rights, mitt romney says no! when it comes to expanding access to good healthcare, mitt romney says no!

actually -- [ laughter ] actually mitt romney said yes and now he says no. >> stephanie: i mean -- you've probably heard what the right wing is outrageous about today is using the ted kennedy. you think how dare you using the candidate he supported with all of his soul and clause of his lifetime healthcare. how dare you use clips. how is that -- think ted kennedydy would be outraged? >> again we have to go back to truth. i think everything that was said last night i listened to it very carefully. can be backed up. in other words, the criticisms can be backed up. but we've got to -- this whole cayman island, tax shelters and bank accounts, swiss bank accounts, you know, i've got people on my staff who because of the republicans, had to take a -- some of them, a 10% pay

cut. some of these people are only making $50,000 single women head of household. but yet they say people making millions should not pay a dime more. what the hell is that? >> stephanie: that's why i think the -- his tax returns are an issue. this election, i think is about incoming equality about the 99% and the 1% tax and equality as you just said. mitt romney won't tell us anything about what he's believed or -- that's all we have is we know what he's done with his money. >> keep accusing us of being against success. if you build a better mousetrap you should be awarded but he made his money tearing companies apart and kicking the carcass. capitalism as rick perry said. >> we've got to help young people get to where they've got to go. i'm telling you i have a daughter that just started at howard university. you know, before they go in,

cayman islands and winters on the slopes of the swiss alps. >> yum yum yum. >> that was so good. i don't know how many rectoral votes he has but the democrats aren't going to win those. >> stephanie: isn't it interesting. we were talking about one of the lines that resonated the most was governor patrick saying democrats gotta grow a spine. that's what a lot of us have been saying. i was saying it to elijah cummings. it is amazing. who was it that said the thing about he's created four and a half million jobs more than george bush created in eight years. devoted democrats are like really? is that true? you think we haven't gotten our message out there? i loved it. i love how crazy the right wing are going over using mitt romney's own videotape against mitt romney. it is not lies. this is what mitt romney said in the debate with ted kennedy. >> to see ted kennedy in this hall sort of alive on that video was exciting for people and it was irrefutable. the republicans couldn't do

anything with it. >> stephanie: let's spoon while we listen. here we go. >> i believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. i believe that since roe v. wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it and i sustain and support that law and the right of the woman to make that choice. >> on the question of the choice issue, i have supported the roe v. wade. i'm pro-choice. my opponent is multiple choice. >> mr. romney, are you going to tell the people of massachusetts which healthcare program you favor? >> i have a plan. i have a position paper on healthcare. i'm happy to show it to you senator, any time you would like. >> mr. romney, it isn't a question of showing me your paper. it is a question of showing all of the people in here that are watching this program the paper. they ought to have an opportunity to know. >> i think it's a wonderful idea to take it through piece by piece. and -- >> that's what you have to do. >> exactly. >> exactly what you have to do.

>> it's great. >> stephanie: it must be embarrassing to see yourself getting your ass kicked by a dead guy. he chewed him up and spit him up. >> ashcroft lost a senate seat to a dead guy. this is old hat for republicans. you see the condescending nature of the republicans on display last week and then you see ted kennedy put them in their place. that's gold for democrats. >> stephanie: of course they hate it because it shows mitt romney for the soulless flip-flopper that he is. passionately arguing for healthcare and pro-choice at that point. >> it explains the enthusiasm gap. this is why they have such a tough time rallying around this candidate. >> stephanie: it was almost as inspiring to me as paul ryan's really, really heartfelt pro-stimulus speech when george bush was president. it really is incredible. it is just exposing all of that hypocrisy. >> people who run for the presidency should make that the first thing they run for. they have nothing in their past. >> stephanie: they need to run

recovery ever. 23 million of us without full-time work. family incomes down. >> it is a $6.6 million ad buy. no chump change but convention organizers are working very hard to keep the spotlight on charlotte. cnn reporting that three big name actresses are likely to be speaking tomorrow. that would be scarlett johansson, natalie portman and kerry washington. the final night's run-down is not yet set in stone but the three would make a sharp contrast to the republican convention's not so mystery celebrity guest and it is likely none of those three will be talking to a chair. and while congressman ron paul confirmed on "the tonight show" he's not going to continue his run for president as an independent candidate, there is a new possible spoiler in the swing state of virginia. former congressman virgil goode is going to be on the ballot in virginia. he's a conservative. he would be the constitution party candidate and because the

jan cichowski alan grayson. mike joins us. one of our favorites from wisconsin. we love us our madison folk. wisconsin democratic chairman. good morning mike. >> happy to be here. >> stephanie: happy convention day. >> absolutely. what a night. what a great night. we had -- i was just blown away by michelle obama. >> stephanie: i just became 16. right? totally. oh, my god! but really, it is interesting. you start to get a sense when you've been doing this kind of punditry, you can tell, jim even the look on some republican's faces, you could tell it was painful for fox to be airing some of it. it was like this is so addictive. >> they're right! >> stephanie: i know. exactly. and we did put a lot of fact checkers out of business because there were no lies. >> obviously very different than last week's convention. i didn't even see what fox was saying about her speech. the republicans i saw actually said it was a good speech. >> stephanie: that's what i was saying.

i think at some point, what can you say? >> she's not very good-looking. >> stephanie: somebody made a fat joke. >> i'm not going to lie. i think she's gorgeous. >> stephanie: she is. you can't fake authenticity, talking to you mitt. >> sure you can just watch me. look at me. >> stephanie: she just -- honestly, the emotion was real. you know, i think when she spoke about her husband and her daughters, it is hard to -- but i mean i think the way the whole thing was woven together with the other themes of the night. >> i just came from our delegation breakfast where we heard from a bunch of people. obviously the comparison to ann romney, i thought ann romney gave an okay speech. ann romney was as real as she is but there is a big difference here. that is that michelle obama is really real and understands. they just finished paying off their student loans. >> stephanie: that's what i mean. you can't fault ann romney. she is who she is.

she has her life experience that she has. of course she's going to relate to most of us the way michelle obama can. >> i thought mrs. romney should have taken a different tact. said we were lucky. i raised five boys and i had help. i understand that not everyone gets that. why go that way? >> stephanie: my big sister is here. my dad ran with goldwater. look, i defended him because i had a nanny growing up. my dad ran for vice president. my mom was on the campaign trail. it didn't mean she wasn't a great mom. but she always said how grateful she was that my dad provided that for her and she never held herself out as an excuse of a woman who had an experience of every other woman in america. that's not to fault the romneys. today is a different time. my parents didn't use us as campaign props. it is just a different time where -- my mom would have been mortified if she had to speak at the convention. >> you didn't have a reality show? >> stephanie: i didn't have a reality show.

i was too ugly for any of that. my mom didn't go out there with some kind of political campaign prop to talk about how relatable her life was with every other woman's. but michelle obama i think -- i was saying the lines resonated with me, we were so young so in love, so in debt. >> it made me think of my wife and i. i know exactly -- it is like -- almost everyone american who watched that speech last night unless they're so jaded or so in the tank for the other side said at some point yeah, that was us. at some part of that speech, i get that. >> i'm sure the romneys said the same thing while they were watching. >> stephanie: the line that resonated with a lot of people. governor duvall patrick last night. >> time for democrats to grow a backbone and stand up for what we believe! >> stephanie: i mean i think it was just -- as i've been saying all morning when he made the case about the numbers of jobs.

the president's created. four and a half million jobs. more than george bush created in eight years. how do you argue -- you know? this president hasn't turned this economy around? >> the old line, you have the law on your side, you bang the table. the republicans have been banging the living daylights out of the table. >> the empty chair. >> and a chair. >> stephanie: literally was the theme last week was obama bad. and mostly built on lies. on things that are proveably not true. >> each side had some heated rhetoric. the facts are on our side. >> stephanie: when fox news debunks paul ryan almost immediately and says hey -- >> and -- in wisconsin cows fly, not pigs. >> stephanie: those things are too -- you cannot blame the president for a plant that closed in janesville under george bush. some things are even outside the balance of politics.

there are not two sides to criticizing the president for not following simpson bowles when you voted against it yourself. >> when i quote the newsroom from hbo but it is like there aren't two sides to the facts. it is the truth. >> stephanie: no. exactly. julian castro, i mean you can't -- >> fantastic. unbelievable. >> stephanie: he's all that and a bag of chips. and salsa. >> between him and his brother we may have looked at one of the future senators from texas. texas will be a blue state. >> stephanie: if anything happened to him it could be like the movie dave. >> i thought they should have made a twin joke. when the brother came out he said you don't really know if it's me or the mayor. i would have done it. you see the teleprompter. like a 15 second advance. they should totally do a twins joke. >> stephanie: his daughter is so cute. i've slipped into a diabetic coma.

boo bhoo. >> i won't admit on your show that i watch that. i'll let you fill in the blank on that. >> stephanie: we were saying -- it is interesting to be in the hall because i was texting with our newswoman jacki schechner covering it and watching on tv covering it from l.a. the rest of our current team in new york. people want to know how is it playing in the hall. and it was interesting. one of those rare conventions. i've been to a few that was the same. she said castro is playing well on television. >> he had great timing with his call and response on the healthcare deal. he was really good. even on the new media twitter you know, it was blowing up. he had more tweets than chris christie. even though chris christie is well-known. >> stephanie: michelle obama had twice as many tweets as mitt romney. if you wanted to know what was going on in the hall during michelle obama, it was insane. from the signed, sealed and

delivered when she came out, it literally, that was spontaneous. that was not the whole you know, four more years and the emotion in the hall for her. >> dress wasn't bad either. >> stephanie: hello! i had a guy sitting next to me saying girlfriend's rockin' that dress. interesting like four years ago, the pundits at least on the right painted her as a liability. by taking her out of context. she's never been proud of america. all of the stuff that fox and company usually does. four years later they can't deny her popularity. she's one of the most popular first ladies ef ef. >> the work she's done on veterans issues and taking care of wounded veterans coming home. it is important. first ladies often -- a lot of the focus is on what we just talked about what they wear. she really has made a huge impact. the mom that introduced her last night, i thought it was a pretty -- >> stephanie: i was going to

say begin, that thing that oh, the democrats are weak on the military. we've got one in the air force army navy, marines. >> the heat that the republicans took last week is they barely mentioned the war in afghanistan. >> stephanie: he didn't mention it. >> never made reference to afghanistan or iraq. it is a pretty remarkable fall for a party that's supposed to be the party of defense. >> although he did mention wanting to invade iran and russia. >> stephanie: the military wasn't let down. >> great. >> stephanie: it is interesting how they say that. something plays better on television. it is interesting to be on the hall. you can tell what is sort of stage managed or phony. i think this has been so authentic in every way. >> i think tonight is going to look -- we all know former president clinton is going to be great. but working for the democratic senate campaign committee i think elizabeth warren is going to set that hall on fire tonight.

i'm look forward to it. >> stephanie: this is the one he's been waiting for all week. when is elizabeth warren speaking? >> shae she is going to be -- i think it will read well on television and the hall. she has just the right message. >> finally poke holes in the we built this nonsense of the rnc. >> stephanie: it is part of the same theme about if you get ahead, don't shut the door behind you help someone else up. i think we're all really excited. with the -- by the way we obviously because of weather had to move the president in. 65,000 people asked for credentials to the outdoor thing and the president is going to do a conference call with them. they promised them they'll get to see the president before the election. it will still be a great speech. >> look, our side is motivated. we're excited. and i think we're ready to go for november. >> stephanie: fired up ready to go forward forward here we go. right back at the dnc. thank you so much. >> thanks for having me.

>> you've seen those. did i make the right call? where were you at midnight? >> stephanie: you know how long -- first of all onis sitting over there. didn't remember where he parked the car so he had one of those parking structure nightmares. 1:00 in the morning. >> i know it is here somewhere. let's talk about what's really going on in the hall which doesn't really involve us. first off it involves the fact that due to the weather due -- because we've all been trapped in these thunderstorms, they've decided to move -- >> stephanie: why do you think i'm in baseball hat day two. i gave up. i lost the battle. >> it was the bang emergency. >> i was having a bang emergency. >> we're honest here. we're democrats. we're honest. honestly, the weather was just too risky because those are dangerous thunderstorms that are going on. >> stephanie: jan schakowsky was getting a message as we were speaking from inside sources. they had give given out 65,000 community credit essentials and the president is going to do a

binky with us. even when i'm on the road, nothing changes. we text like eighth graders. you were anchoring stuff from l.a. i was in the hall. you were asking how is it reading in the hall because on tv, it is xyz. >> because there was so much enthusiasm. we had enthusiasm in the studio when michelle obama finished up her speech. we spontaneously erupted into applause. and it resonated with julian castro too. it was -- you could feel it. it was certainly -- i would say there's no comparison between this week and last week. but that would be an understatement. chris held a sign up that said jacki. he doesn't know i'm talking to you right now. >> let him know you're on with us. >> stephanie: because you said how is julian castro reading in the hall. he's reading great on tv. and what did i say?

i said oh he's handsome and romantic. >> the thing that i thought read the best. it is that moment -- there will be camera moments when they do the montage. jacki, i wonder if you saw the same thing i saw in my monkey pajamas watching on television, the little girl, when he was talking about his daughter and she saw her father on camera, she saw herself on camera and she responded and it was so genuine. so sweet. anyone who's had a kid and all of a sudden you realize this 37-year-old man with a 3-year-old daughter, we were talking about generational change. that's what this is about. it wasn't just the latino moment. it wasn't just that. it was the future. >> we have a president in castro. >> stephanie: castro is going to make fox news go insane. >> stephanie: what a hambone the kid was jacki. >> she was adorable. she was totally primping and flaunting it for the camera like any good little 3-year-old. >> stephanie: you know how many times we both fix our hair

when we're on camera. >> that was unplanned. those are those moments the unscripted moments people remember. >> the highlight for me last night besides the first lady's speech which was above and beyond was the montage that they did for senator kennedy. and i thought it was extraordinarily well produced, how they did the touching tribute and then they put that powerhouse attack in the middle and then they went back to the touching tribute. so it was sandwiched between the unbelievably powerful poignant moments of his career but then they just slammed mitt romney right in the middle. it was brilliantly produced. >> teddy would have loved. you know that last speech that he gave at the last convention, he literally almost could not stand. >> stephanie: i know. >> it was so painful for him to be here but for him to be brought back, i've seen every speech ted kennedy has given and for them to do that montage was so powerful and so appropriate. >> stephanie: jacki, that's

the outrage in right-wing world. how dare they. ted kennedy would be outraged to be used at a convention. >> they wanted a hologram. please. like a hologram of ronald reagan wouldn't have been bizarre and disrespectful? >> stephanie: if they could have used a hologram of reagan to slam obama. because we have the actual tape and the actual testimony. >> about this same guy. >> stephanie: about the man who was so passionate about barack obama. as you said, he gave the speech when he could barely stand. healthcare was the cause of his life. >> absolutely right. >> stephanie: jacki, it was so powerful because it was so effective. that's when you can almost cue the outrage meter right? >> it was great. the other thing that we noticed a lot last night too, was that the republicans are trying very hard to control the social media message and they're doing things like buying promoted hash tags on twitter and they're trying to coin phrases like are you better off or believe in america during

their campaign. but because progressives have always been traditionally better online, it took about 30 seconds for us to get into the "are you better off" bucket and start to write reasons why we have been better off and we are better off. they're not very good at this social media thing. when it comes to trying to hijack it or at least control it because they don't understand these other things that happen organically. >> stephanie: i think that, you know, boy we have to get out there more as we were saying. duvall patrick saying things like four and a half million jobs obama has created. >> private sector jobs. >> stephanie: more than george bush created in eight years. >> absolutely. >> ted strickland jacki, i don't know if you thought what we've thought but strickland was incredible going on the attack and using some of the reddest meat of any of the speakers. those are the clips that are getting replayed. >> it was great. i don't know if you guys noticed either, this is so fabulous is that michele obama did not mention mitt or ann romney once. >> stephanie: no.

>> not once. she didn't have to. >> stephanie: the point of saying -- >> we were in debt. >> stephanie: believes being rich or being successful is not the post important thing. it is helping other people as well. and that whole thing about that he could have done anything. he chose to be a community organizer to help other people. and just that whole powerful point about not closing the door behind you when you've made it. >> romney chose to be a douche bag. >> stephanie: jacki, we've got a copy of the original speech. rich and douchey is no way to go through life. >> there's a slogan. a bumper sticker. >> i'm looking forward to president clinton's speech tonight. i do think he's always a powerful order. i do think he'll make a good argument on behalf of the president. i think it is a good, strong voice to have up there. >> stephanie: you know what the theme tonight is move over, time for the big dog to eat. >> which is like your dog actually. what's really interesting and we saw it with michelle obama. i was texting people in the hall.

i had never seen anything like it. >> stephanie: speaking of president obama's speech, the big news is due to weather we've all been walking through the rainstorms, i've given up on my hair. that's it for the rest of the week. has obviously been moved from the stadium to the convention hall here. and you know, as we're hearing 65,000 people, you know, got asked for community credentials. a lot of disappointed people here. about 16,000 that fit in the convention hall. how is that going to -- i was thinking in some ways, the right wing mocked his speech so much, the big stadium speech in denver with the great columns. in some ways, i'm going just as he has as president i think he will adapt to this hall and he will give a great speech no matter what. >> i agree. >> stephanie: maybe it is good it isn't the same as the last stadium speech, i don't know. >> it will change the environment. sometimes when you get in the big, open venues, you lose the intimacy. >> stephanie: he sure did pretty well at the first convention we saw him at. >> yeah.

inside is more intimate. i think from tv watchers perspective, i think it will be better for him. >> stephanie: yeah and bill clinton, of course, i would say one of -- obviously the most anticipated speeches, my friend david bender is getting out of his monkey pajamas and coming to the hall tonight. if you know the logistics here, a lot of people from current are in south carolina. so if you're coming to the hall, it is a big night for us. >> it is a huge night. i think elizabeth warren is going to be a very significant speaker and someone who will provide another perspective and that is that the democratic party is out to protect consumers, out to protect the middle class and she speaks with that same kind of empathy and understanding of the plight of the middle class that joe biden does so well. i think she will be a very good voice tonight. >> stephanie: rather than having yell i love you women. we actually have a lot of awesome women speaking including

michelle obama, lilly ledbetter and elizabeth warren tonight. just some unbelievably impressive women have spoken and will speak coming up. >> i wouldn't minimize the impact that lilly ledbetter had for those people who saw her last night. that is a very, very compelling personality. >> stephanie: a lot of people don't know exactly who she is. we sort of know what the story is. but that really was amazing to see her. >> it was. that was something you could feel in your gut. >> stephanie: michelle obama just seamlessly weaved that into her story and the president's family story about why he's always believed in fairness for everybody. >> exactly right. that's really what we democrats keep saying and now we have great voices out there saying it for us. if you're for everybody a country that works for everybody, you've gotta be a democrat. >> stephanie: i've said it a million times to. me the line of the night, the

door, if you make it, don't shut the door behind you. to me, that's what the republican party stands for. reach and help somebody else up. >> don't shut the garage elevator behind you. >> stephanie: i'm sorry. >> there was that stark number that came out a few months that over a period of a couple of years, 93% of all of the increases in personal income went to the top 1%. >> stephanie: mitt romney has done very well under president obama. >> republicans, their response to it was how did we let that 7% get away? so they propose more tax cuts for the wealthiest americans. >> stephanie: well i mean that's, i think as i've been saying, certainly income inequality, the 1% and 99% is coming front and center in a way that's understandable to a lot of people. don't you think? >> without question. that's the fundamental problem with the american economy right now is that the vast majority of americans have lost ground and don't have the buying power to

support economic growth. >> stephanie: right. still, again i can't say it enough. youduvall patrick bringing the issues home by saying president obama has created four and a half million jobs in the time -- more than george bush created in eight years. and this is without, as you know in congress, congressman any help at all from republicans on a jobs act a stimulus, you know. i mean incredible. >> i like to talk about my district because over the last four years, is my district better off than they were four years ago. at the end of the year, we'll have a ford plant. four years ago, it was on the chopping block. at the end of this year, 3100 more employees than they did a year ago and there is an investment of $600 million. we'll have the largest ford plant in north america state-of-the-art. and that's a direct result of government policies. >> stephanie: one of the other great lines of the night, osama bin laden's dead, g.m.'s alive. what else can you say? as you say if we had any

republican help, we could have gotten bigger stimulus as most economists were arguing for. if we had not had all of the republican governors cutting all of the public employees thinking that's such a good thing, unemployment would be much lower. to me, that's the major issue is not just getting the president. getting a congress he can work with because once you go on record as saying your number one priority is making this president a one-term president they proved it at every stretch. >> that's my senator. mitch mcconnell. >> stephanie: i know. >> the house republican leaders at the night of the inauguration. they basically said we can't let him have any victories. so it has been clear. i was on the ways and means story. >> stephanie: some democrats did not know that. kennedy yesterday. during the president's inaugural speech, what were the republicans doing? >> they were plotting, basically, the downfall of president obama. >> stephanie: paul ryan and others. they were in a downtown washington restaurant, it has been well documented, meeting basically saying here's how we
