romney, and 9% for paul ryan. >> their convention was so negative and such an attempt to actually introduce this guy who has been running for president for ten years. this convention paints a story of the president and first lady while connecting the policies. >> stephanie: i really wanted to say, this is how you do a convention. >> that's the way you do it. >> stephanie: and he did it with such charm and humor, in a way -- it was devastating. >> it was an indictment absolutely. and so much better than george w. bush's speech in tampa. for president to change the course of an already weak economy and then just sixes weeks before his election saw it suffer the biggest collapse since the great depression a man who stopped the slide into depression, and put us on the long road to recovery knowing all the while that no matter how many jobs that he saved or created, there would still be millions more waiting. worried about feeding their own kids, trying to keep their hopes alive. i want to nominate a man who's cool on the outside. this kind of economy. nobody -- it was not this bad. nobody could have turned this around any better in four years than president obama has. >> especially with all of the non-compliance he has had from the republicans. >> yeah, the big difference was republicans worked with president clinton, they were willing to help the country. but this republican party from day one -- we find out paul ryan was in meetings the night president obama was sworn in on how to cripple this guy's presidency. that's not a sign of leadership. that's the sign of partisanship. >> stephanie: yeah. and that's when clinton went on to say, though he disagreed with the gop, he said i never learned to hate them the way they hate obama. >> they don't hate obama -- remember that's the new message -- they don't hate

american people. >> stephanie: yeah, the big difference between the two conventions, lies no lies. is kind of hilarious, i think it was clinton saying -- actually -- no it was julian castro said the tax policy center had said that mitt romney's plan would likely raise taxes on the middle class. they called that dupous or misleading because mitt romney says he won't raise taxes. and when has mitt romney ever broken his word? >> i like the idea of having these independent fact checkers up there because they do a fairly good job, but what they fail at is trying to find examples on the other side. it's like when ann colter says something crazy, and they said well, they do it too.

i really like talking to people. but i was really focusing on trying to get my message out to people about the choice we're facing this november and the differences between mr. romney's and mr. ryan's policies and president obamas. >> stephanie: i have never seen such anger among women. i have gotten so many emails saying is this 1952. >> that's right. they have given us plenty to be angry about. but it's so important that we harness those feelings and get out there and register to vote and do everything we can to make sure they are not successful in turning back the clock. >> stephanie: isn't it amazing, obviously your whole news cycle was bad enough, but with the todd akin thing, you just go this is a pattern?

this isn't one guy calling a woman a slut or one guy saying something offensive and scientifically inaccurate it's in their platform. >> that's exactly right. and i want to acknowledge that mr. akin's comments were really hard for survivors to hear but it did really shine a light on the kinds of bills that have been proposed by this republican house of representatives bills that would draw distinctions between which survivors of rape have access to the care they need and extreme bills that mr. ryan sponsored. >> stephanie: and that would disappear many of mitt romney's grandchildren. >> exactly. >> stephanie: it is just so extreme. >> it is so important that especially young women realize this is real.

this is not just rhetoric from a party in a campaign. this is an actual threat. they have proposed these bills, cosponsored them, and voted for them. they are doing everything they can. this is not an idle threat. >> stephanie: it weren't so horrible it would be funny. the whole reason you were testifying is because republicans had a hearing on women's health and wouldn't let any women testify. i'm a comedian so i keep going now i just want to get the congress to have a hearing on balls, and i'm not inviting any men. [ laughter ] >> stephanie: katherine higel and me. that's it. >> just don't invite me to that one. >> stephanie: but it is incredible. you go to testify, you know, about -- i believe you were speaking in part about your friend who needs birth control for indo meet rios sis. >> that's right.

>> stephanie: it was so random, and sustained from rush limbaugh calling you a slut. >> i wouldn't call it random. it's a really old move. right? we have seen this before these attacks on women, so in a way it was really retro. >> stephanie: you think? just a little bit. >> just a little. >> stephanie: be it's hard to know -- bob mcdonald speaking at the republicans -- that is state-sponsored rape, these transvaginal probes. it's hard to even keep your attention own one more egregious bill after another. >> yeah, there is a danger that we're all going to get so overloaded with all of it, that we might tune out, but that's why it is so important to remain engaged. and for those of was following politics very closely, we see all of this but a lot of people

aren't seeing this minute by minute. and that's why it's important that we tell people about it. >> stephanie: i don't think there has been a starker choice in our lifetime on women's issue. >> we certainly have a stark one right now. >> stephanie: yeah, and paul ryan is so extreme -- and what is frightening about mitt romney -- that's why the right wing was going so crazy about them playing that clip of ted nugent, because that seemed like the only conviction he ever had was being pro chase back in -- >> yeah, it's really disturbing to see the way he has changed his position with the political wind. but people know he had a record in massachusetts that was a problem. he vottoed a bill that would have guaranteed victims of rape access to contraception in an er room. so those are the kinds of action he took. i don't like to see a politician

question. yes, we are better off than we were. >> i'm from michigan. we have lower unemployment than the national average. ask those people in the auto industry if they are better off? and if their housing prices are starting to go up. ask the teamsters who were laid off and now getting jobs, ask those people if they are better off, and the answer is they are. >> stephanie: you were saying he did his research for this -- the whole thing about democratic versus republican presidencies since 1961 how many more jobs democrats have created. >> they say that it's only the rich people that are job creators and that's why their theory is we should give more tax cuts to the rich people and start cutting back on the things that the regular people social security, medicare medicaid that hopefully we'll enjoy some day should be cut.

america that creates good jobs healthcare pensions. that's what america needs. that's our middle class, and that's what everybody wants to ignore. we need to rebuild our middle class. >> stephanie: and what a perfect example of how unions are not the enemy. we all came together and saved a great american industry. i mean it just -- that -- that to me -- i mean obviously this is a tough time for labor, isn't it? and that's why this is so important. >> the recession has been devastating to labor. i mean there has been 8 million jobs lost with the bush crash and those jobs are not back. we're slowly working our way back, but it was devastating. and the jobs that left were the good jobs. they were the high-paying jobs with the healthcare and pension. and to some extent we're able to do that, but you are right, we have to sit down and be reasonable, and the other thing that really got me about last

working. it has been four years. you have changed. your spending is out of control, and you are always out with hollywood celebrities. >> looks like they are trying to paint him as a big spender who takes a lot of vacations and hangs without the rich. i'm sure you can see the irony there. team romney has plenty of ad money at his disposal right now reporting a $100 million haul in august, not to mention the $165 million he now has access to now that he is the official nominee. luckily for the democrats, though, they are bringing in some money too. priorities usa is reporting its largest-ever fund-raising effort, $10 million last month. and though it might be big bucks for democrats it is pretty much chump change for republicans.

thought a lot of the earlier ones. sister samone i thought was brilliant in taking down the immorality of paul ryan's budget -- >> and gets into the values that we ought to have. >> stephanie: yeah. and the story of the night, of course congressman is how much he was just riffing off prompter. >> yeah. but i think his cadence was established. but then the crowd was just appealing to the emotional impact, and, you know, it wasn't just sheer emotion. it was like look you can't afford to do this the wrong way. we have been there before. and he says we're not going to double down on trickle down. >> stephanie: yeah tony play this one. bill clinton last night. >> i want to go back to the same old policies that got us in trouble in the first place.

they want to cut taxes for high-income americans even more than george bush did. they want to actually increase defense spending over a decade $2 trillion more than the pentagon has requested. without saying what they will spend it on. and they want to make enormous cuts in the rest of the budget, especially programs that help the middle class and poor children. as another president once said there they go again. [ laughter ] >> stephanie: i mean, it was one of those speeches it's hard to pick a highlight. >> yeah, and the crowd was responding with nor intensity with every passing quip out there that got them engaged, and if you had to energize this base, we are leaving this convention, i am convinced driven to reelect this president. >> stephanie: yeah and tonight

will be the crescendo. he has just been set up beautifully all week. it is almost building to this fever pitch, and last night -- it was the one night i wasn't in the hall and i was saying you could see on tv what was happening in the hall. it wasn't like how is this reading in the hall. >> yeah, i talked to some of my local media back home this morning, and even some non-believers were acknowledging that it was an igniting moment, and he talks about the strategy the president has, a vision re-engineering our economy so it's cutting edge, ahead of the curve. that takes, i think, strength of leadership that he is doing the tough way, but the right way. >> stephanie: a lot of people say this rhetoric is harsh so ta. they have last week -- from fact

checker organizations including fox news was proven to be built on a lot of lies. the reputation was built completely on facts and the truth, which makes it even more devastating to explode this myth of job creation. >> the president brought up the fact that they want to dismiss any effort to fact check their agenda, and he said they are ready to give that up and he said i am from that place that still believes two plus two equals four. >> stephanie: yeah, we got to hear this line. >> people asked me all the dime how we got four surplus budgets in a row. i always give a one-ward answer. arithmetic. [ cheers and applause ] >> stephanie: here is the -- here is the embodiment of i gave you a surplus.

george bush -- they seep saying stop blaming bush -- bush was the one that created this huge deficit, the wars on the books, the tax cuts for the rich it was incredible. >> he could have said math as an answer. so he went to arithmetic. so he took it down to k through 6. so he was kind of slamming us. >> stephanie: yeah. i reader people on the right-wing going -- clinton is like i didn't inherit this economy. george bush did stimulus and paul ryan was all for it. all spending is not the same. >> yep. >> stephanie: spending for an unnecessary war is different than spending for stimulus and infrastructure that is creating jobs. >> or asking for trillions or

billions more than the -- than the defense department had asked before, without any explanation. i think he set the tone right in the beginning, when he said since 1961 we have had these 28 years of republican leadership 24 of democratic leadership. and then let's do the scorecard. and how many jobs did he create less time at the plate how many jobs did they create 24 million, how many did we create 42 million. it's lob sided, our agenda has been a successful agenda and puts thriving middle class into the forefront. >> stephanie: you can go these policies have been tried, they didn't work when you have reagan's budget director saying trickle down didn't work. and they didn't barely mention george w. bush at their convention. they know his policies didn't

work. >> yep. irresponsible behavior, and you know what i liked too, was he was talking about the partnership ahead of the partisanship, so i think that tone of that speech sets up the takeover of the house for the democrats. i think it all comes together. >> stephanie: congressman i said that over and over when we chatted on the show. it is not just the president. we have got to get him a congress that he can work with. even clinton said -- there was a lot of clinton derangement syndrome too, but even he said i have never seen the hatred for this president. >> oh, yeah. and he said no president could have solved this problem in four years, and they made it even tougher in the first two years,

when bill clinton described the message of the gop convention. he said their message was pretty simple. we created a horrible mess. and he has taken too long to clean it up. >> stephanie: yeah, put us back in. >> exactly. that really was the message. and the president is so good at making so many of those analogies. they drove the car in the ditch and help me get this out of here. like giving him the keys back. right? i think -- we were talking about the president tonight saying wow how do you top that? i think that shows the president's confidence that he is happy to be bill clinton testify for him, because who better? >> stephanie: absolutely and seeing the two of them together on the stage you couldn't help but get the impression of what

incredible presidents they are. >> stephanie: yeah, do you want to use the policies where we had this, or do you want to go back to the policies -- >> yeah. i must have been watching a different station when they had the romney/bush embrace on stage at the convention. where was that? [ laughter ] >> stephanie: romney even hardly got mentioned at the romney convention. i mean it's -- i think that's almost the way it felt. >> maybe president bush was sitting in that empty chair -- >> i was just going to say that. >> stephanie: he was the other empty chair. [ laughter ] >> stephanie: yeah it's hard to even compare the two conventions, there's just seemed so disjointed so disarray so little enthusiasm and this -- last night was the night i wasn't in the hall but you didn't need to be to see what was going on. >> there's a new phrase instead

of getting a bump they got a goose bump. >> stephanie: no bump. i can't imagine we're not going to get a bump out of this. >> i think it's inevitable and i think the story of this election is going to be basically a non-story that the president started out modestly ahead, in the middle of the day he was modestly ahead, and at the end of the day he was modestly ahead. but he is still going to win. >> stephanie: yeah. what are you hoping to hear tonight press release the president? >> i think we'll hear his vision for the next four years, and building what president clinton said last night, how we can continue to move forward, get back to the prosperity we had during the clinton years, and what that is going to take but also a lot more of the personal narrative that michelle obama did so eloquently. that elizabeth warren talked

about, that we all share this american dream that each generation has an opportunity to do better than the generation that went before it and how we can make that possible. >> stephanie: maybe i'm a little too happy clappy, and i know they are saying this isn't a wave election but if you look at the approval rating for the congress, and i keep saying you have to get him a congress he can work with. and bill clinton laid that out, this irrational hatred for obama. so that's what i'm hoping for. is there a chance we'll get the house back? >> there is a chance. we need the wind at our back to gain enough, but that's certainly doable. and if we have the land slide that you are predicting, it will happen. >> stephanie: i'm just saying.

pick an issue. >> right. >> stephanie: and this has gotten to be -- this war on women is not fictional, do you think? >> no. it was one of the things where i felt like unless i really got into it, and got really proactive, i just shouldn't have a boyfriend. >> stephanie: well barry was openly prochose, but i think this small government -- >> hello. >> stephanie: how do you get that caught up in women's lives and medical questions. >> the rnc this year did not seem small government at all. >> stephanie: no, i didn't get that. >> there is no pocket trend or anything like that. >> stephanie: yeah. >> it was really -- it's a really tough time and i think that unfortunately the republican party is just not even recognizable. my grandfather -- i can't speak for him, because he is dead and

night that -- you know i thought was really -- again, it's all of these myths that only the republican party supports the military the right way. >> they want to go back to the same old pollties that got us into trouble in the first place. cut taxes for high-income americans. and get rid of those pesky financial regulations. they want to increase defense spending over a decade $2 trillion more than the pentagon has requested, without saying what they will send it on. and they want to make i normous cuts in the rest of the budget especially programs that help the middle class and poor children. as another president once said there they go again. >> stephanie: go ahead. >> he brings up a great point about the $2 trillion. republicans push programs that we don't need, and they push

those programs so they can later cut military pensions. sort of like what they want to do with social security. so the republicans at times -- the weapons contractors push weapons that are unnecessary so they can cut the benefits that help the military. >> stephanie: and at a time when suicide has out paced come deaths among our troops. >> yeah, we have a suicide problem. we have done everything inside the force that we can think of to limit suicide. it's very bad. when you go home and you have been in iraq or afghanistan for a year, and things aren't great at home with the wife or husband, and things are different with the kids and maybe your job is not there anymore because it went overseas, it's a very, very hard process to go through.
