[ laughter ] >> well, that too. >> john: do you find it interesting that the class war fair has become so focused any time someone in congress wants to actually help working families? >> it is pretty bizarre.

there has been class war fair in this country, and the wealthy class has won. >> john: yeah, uh-huh. >> it seems they only talk about the class war fair from the bottom up and not from the top down. >> john: yeah, if you talk to the 99% it's class war fair if it's the 1% it's class growth. >> 93% of the income in the country went to the top 1% and after that the reaction was how did we let that 7% go to waste. [ laughter ] >> john: so many people who are paying at attention to things like facts and numbers are terrified of the budget. >> that's right. and i do serve on the budget committee and have been fighting that one for this entire congress, but i think he is

being hoisted on his own patard because democratic candidates throughout the country are describing exactly what is in that. and that's boding well for republicans that voted for it, which virtually everyone did. >> john: indeed. and i was wondering do you find it encouraging that now that paul ryan is out there speaking to people who don't live in a bubble that american people are starting to wake up about some of the problems in his budget? >> exactly right. and basically what he does is again provide even deeper tax cuts for the wealthiest americans, and pays for that by reducing programs that help working families and lower-income americans, and -- and -- what i call the

human infrastructure part of the economy. i mean taking money away from education, and pell grants and nutrition programs and even things like food inspection and faa -- these are the programs that actually are getting whacked while they lower taxes for millionaires. >> he's proptomaine poisoning growth. [ laughter ] >> john: it really seems like it is the opposite what patriotism is. the talked about how this president has overseen the slowest growth since eisenhower. when he wants to have taxes go up on the top 3% of income earners, it seems to be on so many measures when you look at what the world conservative

really means, much like bill clinton, barack obama is the fiscal conservative in the room. >> you brought up something that i make a point of whenever i can. that spending has not inkoreaed dramatically. people think it is, again, that's that fox news bubble that people live in. and the problem is the revenue side. president obama -- the size of government is down the number of employees are down. it's just remarkable the disconnect of reality. >> if we didn't have a democratic president, paul ryan voted for every december it is increase. >> john: indeed he did. >> he did more to increase the deficit than any of us will ever do. >> he is like the guy that goes out to dinner with a bunch of

riches guys and orders everything because he knows he is not paying the tab. >> john: that's right. on an economic level george bush is guilty of the greatest dine and dash in u.s. history. [ laughter ] >> john: is that fair? >> absolutely. two wars off of the books, a huge prescription drug benefit that was not paid for, and the major tax cuts that put us in this position. it was like 1.1 trillion or 1.2 trillion that was built into the deficit when president obama took office. it stayed that way, primarily because income to the government hasn't risen obviously the country is in difficult economic time. the recovery hasn't been strong,

so revenues haven't increased, but the deficit, most of it was built into the system by the bush administration. >> john: absolutely. it seems like mitt romney proves that the arrow stock krasy is like the mob and the rest of us is the restaurant being burned down for the insurance money. it seems like the republican party really embodies all of the traits of the worst stereo you types. >> yes, and bill clinton did what was probably the greatest contrast to that. he did raise taxes got a handle on government spending and he showed when you do that you can get economic growth and reduce the deficit. >> john: what can ordinary

citizens do who are waking up and realizing we'll being fed all of the propaganda beyond just voting? the republican party is all talk and no responsibility. >> i come from a media background -- >> john: you were a radio show host. >> yes and i publiced the alternative [ inaudible ] newspaper -- >> i would love to have a media background. [ laughter ] >> well, you are getting one, i guess. we talk about the fox news bubble, and we really have had a dysfunctional government and dysfunctional media over the last 10, 15 years anyway and the vast majority of people are not getting truly balanced perspective on what is going on.

>> john: right. >> the balance is put somebody on from either side and let them scream at each other. >> make it false equivalency between the two all the time. >> right. and one of the ways i phrase it is that unfortunately in today's world credibility has no market value, and we have got to -- we -- the public has to make sure that credibility is valued. and -- and -- and i think that's going to happen, because i have so many constituents that say i don't know what to believe anymore. so the -- we have got to make sure the public rewards credibility. >> john: does it seem sir because that's there's no long a central news authority. and everybody gets the news that speaks to their biases? >> clearly that's the problem,

and, you know, the show "news room" which premiered this year on the hbo show was based on that premise that some organizations said we'll be the credible organization, and see if we can survive that way. >> i think aaron did a great thing with that show. i think it's -- having a republican -- or a guy playing a republican who actually wants to clean up the way news is done, kind of like speak to that whole notion. >> that's why i thought it should have been on the si-fy channel. [ laughter ] >> john: congressman as we pointed out on this show, bill clinton did balance the budget by working with conservatives. so given all of this the fact that reagan never balanced the budget once and george w bush

sanatorium campaigns. >> that's true. i also see the power of money in what i think is one of the most serious problems and issues in this election, which is voter suppression. this is an election first of all that is being fought in about eight states. but it's really about get out to vote versus voter suppression, what kind of political party bets its future on suppressing the vote rather than expanding the vote. >> john: exactly. >> that's a party that looks out at this country, sees how it is changing demographically, that there are new coalitions the young, and people of color, and the money they are pouring in is part of that suppression. >> and as a black american, i am

found at it cases, and surveyed thousands and thousands. what has happened is very cleverly and i don't say that in a positive way. the republicans have placed and elected these governors in key states who are ramming these things through and it is the case that there is not enough of a fight, but you are seeing legal action, the key is to link it to the community organizing progressive action and i think this white house not vocally enough -- >> that's what i was getting at. it feels like to me it is such a bigger deal than it is being made of by the white house. you are talking about a voter's right act that happened in what -- >> yeah. >> and people are actively trying to reverse that law. >> and the next step by the way talking about the supreme court, we have a reporter looking at this. there is a well-funded think

tank, financial and other right of right-wing infrastructure poised to target gut and destroy the voting rights act by gutting section 5. the section so critical to the voting rights act. that is the goal. in the meantime what we're witnessing are skirmishes leading up to that. so i think the good news is many of the decisions in these key states have gone in the right way. to be honest with you, i don't know if the strategy of the administration is to not speak to much, sort of carry a big stick, but be quiet, because i think the department of justice has a lot of action going on on this front. >> and i think obama is probably careful about the more he speaks up about this, the more the right-wing is going to portray him as being uptight --

>> john: exactly. >> it gives them the opportunity to demonize him, and like you are saying it's like the small stick. because the courts are having some success. >> john: i agree. >> and i also think what is important -- we have a project here at the nation.com called voting rights watch. i think part of the strategy is also that this should not be a partisan issue. why should it -- this is about democracy, and expanding democracy, that has been the curve of justice that this country is committed to. >> but if you expand democracy the republicans lose. [ laughter ] >> right. but if you expand the issue it looks like a partisan issue, when it should be a partisan issue. i have looked into this a little because of the citizens united fight and people say it's just impossible to fight for an

inamendment. the right-wing has mobilized around amendments over the years, and we have had 17 amendments since the bill of rights. and they have been franchise expanding, democracy reducing. and basically it's a republican party committed to rolling back the civilized advances of the 20th and 21st century, and the key is voting rights. >> john: yes, and the key lining is that it is clearly a sign that the right-wing arris tock aresy is getting scared and they know the minorities are going to be able to take democracy back. >> right. >> john: i think these are signs that the right-wing base is

really scared that they are not going to have the power to win honestly anymore because there are less of them every year. >> i agree, but i think what we are witnessing in 2012 is the kind of last hurrah of a party that is increasingly pail, stale, and older -- but in the last harraw, the ability to poor in millions and millions so outspend troops, and then combine that with the ability if the courts don't go the right way, they could have a last hurrah in this season. in 2042, i believe this country will be majority minority. so the tea party and the elements around it is they are
