was struggling with funds in august, and took out a $20 million loan to cover expenses. the president now has $88.8 million to spend between now and election day. mitt romney has $50.4 million, and still owes $11 million on the $20 million loan. records show that mitt romney continues to struggle with grassroots support. only about 14% of his donations can be considered small donations, less than $200. the president doubles that at about 30%. and clint eastwood and his empty chair may have been the most memorable moment of both conventions, but joe biden gave the most-watched speech. nielsen's put together the ratings from both conventions, and 46 million people tuned in

throw, people know obama. and more, i think, when they paint the picture of obama that is so patently absurd and at odds with what people have seen the last four years i think it goes the other way. people say we clearly can't trust this because it is ridiculous. >> stephanie: and one of the things we're seeing markos in battleground after battleground just today colorado nevada, and wisconsin, president obama pulling ahead. it has the feel of a freefall, doesn't it? >> yeah, i mean the romneys -- at this point it is almost piling on bad us in on pop of the bad news. the big question at this point is he going to drag down the senate and house republicans as well.

it looks like it is happening at the senate. so the thing with the house not as much polling as we have seen of the senate so it's harder to gauge. >> stephanie: i was going to ask you about down ticket because boy it sure is looking that way. i think we were talking about a lot of the see senate races, but the house is going to be hard -- first of all it is a lot of seats we would have to win, right? >> yeah, a year ago we were like hopefully we can hold the senate. about six months ago we're thinking i think we're going to hold the senate. today there is a credible path to gaining the senate. that's just mind boggling. so the senate is looking fantastic. the problem with the house is that republicans were able to shore up a lot of their incumbents in redistricting. they won in 2010 and that give them control of the

redistricting. that said we're starting to see races that nobody thought were on the radar, like mary bonno mac -- >> stephanie: yeah. >> nobody thought that race would be competitive, and suddenly it is neck and neck. and we're seeing races that nobody thought would be in play. so we have these opportunities that have opened up that we didn't think were going to happen. does that mean we're going to get the 25 seats that we need? still tough, but the possibility is starting to get there. >> stephanie: wow. chuck schumer said main stream republicans have confided in him they intend to gain control of the gop from the tea party if romney loses. what do you think?
