front page that 900 dead people had voted. and then like page 23 three weeks later was governor actually no dead people voted, because they were dead. >> stephanie: yeah there's that. >> and so it's absolutely -- you know mind boggling that they have been able to pass laws on this lie. but when a law isn't created to solve a problem, it is created to be a problem, and that's why we have gotten so many governors to veto these things. but what we're most worried about now are the dirty tricks that come out. we have seen robo calls going out in spanish, telling people to vote on the 8th not the 6th. >> stephanie: and you can vote by phone. >> exactly.

>> stephanie: you would think if they are so confident they wouldn't have to resort to this. >> yeah we saw the chairman of the republican party four or five years ago, say we can win without voter suppression, without vouter fraud and we can win on our ids. and that should be the motto. you do have people like governor snyder in michigan bob mcdonald in virginia who have taken great political risk but you have got a party that in too many places have been overrun by extremists who are willing to do whatever they can to win, and that's not what this country is about. >> stephanie: ben, i'm looking at the story in wisconsin, the romney watchers have been trained to mislead voters.

they confirm that the materials they are using in training are misleading. for instance convicted felons are ineligible to vote in wisconsin, and that's not true. >> yeah it's suspicious especially coming from a campaign in virginia that tried to have 16,000 voter registrations thrown out, simply because they feared that people might vote for the other guy. it's one thing to contest votes, it is one thing to contest voters, it's something else to contest voter registration. and that hyper[ inaudible ] of the process is just something we have to back off of. we have to get back into a place where everybody in this country

should have the right to vote and voting is a right, not a privilege. >> stephanie: exactly, ben. and i think it's telling, particularly in this wisconsin case they instructed their poll watchers not to disclose any affiliation with the campaign. they were told to list themselves as concerned citizens. >> yeah that's -- look that's -- that's highly suspect, highly suspicious certainly deserving of a full investigation, and if it is found to be intentional, then somebody needs to go to jail. >> stephanie: and ben, reassure my listeners, because it seems like the obama administration has pretty much been all over this. obviously we have won at the courthouse in pretty much every state, in this wisconsin one, they wrote there are certainly

concerns under wisconsin law, take all necessary steps to protect the rights of our voters. it seems like the obama team is really on the ball on this am i right? >> yes, [ inaudible ] has done a great job of frankly rebuilding a function that had been almost completely decimated by the bush administration, but we have seen since 2000 secretaries of state across the country, hyperpartism, and engaging in behavior that is anti-democratic, and goes against the spirit and the express purpose of their positions. >> stephanie: yeah. ben, absolutely, too many people have died for this right. do not let them take away your

right to vote. tell people where they can go to find out the rights in their state. >> folks can go to naacp.org and text v-o-t-e to 6227 and get it that way. and you are so right. and that's one of the things that makes me most proud of our folks in florida. fully over 125,000 votes were in florida, and that's -- you got to recall we started this year with sheriff brooke threatening to throw our people in jail because the office [ inaudible ] was turned in more than 48 hours after they took it out.

romney has a christie problem and a obama problem. there they are, president obama and chris christie were touring new jersey together. and it honestly looked authentic too. >> obama: what i can promise you is the federal government will be working as closely as possible with the state and local officials, and we will not quit until this is done. >> oh conservatives hate hearing that. >> ah! >> stephanie: didn't that one headline say it all, bush's fema director says obama reacted too quickly. >> you are doing it too quickly. not enough people have died yet. >> stephanie: even the picture of them on marine one shows you the resources of the federal government in terms of assessing the damage quickly.

[ laughter ] >> we knew this was likely to be the most expensive election season ever. the numbers ares and on the initialling. the total price tag $6 billion. the presidential election alone accounts for at least $2.6 billion which would be a little bit less than 2008 a total of $2.8 billion spent four years ago, but then talk a about house and senate candidates $1.2 billion, house spending up senate spending down a little bit, and then $970 million by outside groups like super pacs and non-profits.

it's all estimated math but that's where the estimate is right now, and what is important to keep in mind is the hundreds of millions of dollars we don't know about because there are groups like cross road's and the chamber of commerce which said they are doing issue advocacy work and don't have to report how much they are spending. there is are super pac in missouri just dropped $800,000 on aed for todd akin even though they claim he isn't that first choice. >> you don't have to agree with everything he says but you can be sure that akin will vote for romney's policies. >> it's called the now or never pac, and they want voters to choose todd akin so romney will have a senate to work with. national republicans still

it just shows desperation from romney. first was during the debate when he tried to take credit for the auto rescue after saying detroit should go bankrupt and then he tried to take credit for the rescue now he is changing gears and trying to make up even more facts and jobs going overseas. this is an act of desperation, and i think certainly the people here in the state of michigan know the president did a courageous thing and it has been very successful. >> stephanie: clearly the people of michigan had the good taste to elect you, and the romney camp was saying we're going to be competitive in michigan and a new ppp poll shows obama leading 53-45 correct? >> yes, it looks like the

president is getting momentum once again. >> stephanie: not only is this a flat-out lie, but insults the intelligence of people in places like michigan doesn't it? >> it certainly does. we're talking about hundreds of thousands of jobs that have been created as a result of the rescue, and the center for automotive research has claimed and documented that over a million jobs were saved as a result of that rescue and for mr. romney to put out ads about jobs going to china, when you have general motors coming out with a statement, you may have seen their statement that said basically -- this is a quote -- clearly entered some parallel universe during these last few days so the companies are just outraged by these comments. >> stephanie: yeah. representative he went on to say

no amount of campaign politics at its cynical worse will -- [ inaudible ]. have you ever seen car companies get into the middle of a campaign like this but i feel like they almost have to. >> yeah they have to. they want to stay out of partisan politics but they can't allow these -- these lies to go forward, particularly when they are so outrageous, and as they say, politics in the most cynical form which is unfortunate there someone who is running for-president. this goes to the very character of the individual. >> stephanie: thank you. that is the word there. they said their comments don't refute anything in oured a -- here we go again, it is carefully in the narrowest sense, after romney outright

misstated that jeep was considering shipping jobs to china, which first of all is fear mongering. and they only jeep was looking at expanding in china, but it is completely unrelated to their domestic work force. so obviously the innuendo behind the ads is clear, and nothing could be farther from the truth, right? >> absolutely. and it's clear billions of dollars being invested in those facilities and thousands of jobs being created here in michigan and thousands of jobs were saved across the united states because of that. these are good paying middle class jobs and once again the president did a bold thing. i was in the middle of all of that. it was a very ugly and scary

time and the president made a decision that was not very popular, and he did it because he believed in the american workers and in that investment and it has paid off, and we can't get mr. romney to say this was a success. >> stephanie: will mitt romney's grossly misleading jeep to china ad help him win? you would hope that people are not that stupid? >> oh absolutely. and that's why the auto companies came out with these statements. so certainly i have faith in the american people and certainly folks in the midwest who have been through that very rough time and know where we are today. they are not going to be swayed by this. you have to call it out very aggressively as the auto

companies have and other people. including newspapers saying this is just outrageous. >> stephanie: well good for them. good for them. fine, fine products coming out of michigan not just jeeps, but debbie stabenow and rent gary peters. >> stephanie: you went to the university of virginia right? >> i did. i graduated in e-con, and foreign affairs one of the things i do is telling college students when i was in college in 2000 i was so cynical and apathetic that i didn't even vote and i was poly-si major and i didn't vote. >> stephanie: so you are speaking as a former slacker to the kids. >> exactly. so i'm approaching from perhaps a relatable -- >> [ inaudible ]. >> exactly. i'm from texas originally, so i feel doubly ashamed. [ laughter ] >> so it really is i think something they can relate to. i know that times are tough, and, you know, they are potentially entering the job market, and things are

difficult, but what i have been impressed by is that these young people -- it sounds so strange calling them young people these young people actually have a sense of history, and understand that obama didn't create the recession, he obviously inherited it. and they are very fired up and ask very interesting and intelligent questions, and i have been really inspired. >> stephanie: ben, that is the moment you realize you are an old person when you use the phrase young people. >> yes. >> stephanie: it seems like the media's only story line is they want a horse race. and that was one of the means -- latinos aren't going to vote. 87% of hispanics plan to vote this year. what is your sense of as you put

it, the young people? >> the hope and optimism of 2008 has hardened into resolve, which is really deeply deeply felt and expressed very passionately it's hard to quantify numbers, but from what i'm seeing and when you look at the early-voting numbers in these battleground states i was in nevada and those early voting numbers are really good. so i would -- i think numbers don't lie, and you have got to look at the turnout so far. >> stephanie: i haven't north carolina. do you know -- what are the latest numbers you have heard? >> it just seems like you know, african american students, they

are discouraged, they are not going to turn out, blah blah blah. well so far they have been turning out and turning out in huge numbers. north carolina was exceedingly close in 2008 so look it is going to be tough, but it certainly isn't this -- it's interesting. the pundits write off certain states, i think in part to make it a horse race. >> stephanie: yeah sure. >> romney has north carolina so we can give that to his total, and how close can we make this but the truth is you know, the only thing we can really say is it is incumbent upon every citizen to express their viewpoint by voting and participating, and the numbers will be what they will be. >> stephanie: ben, in the state where you went to school virginia, the president is again, very close, but -- up two points. chris christie not the only republican governor bob mcdonald has been praising the

president as well. he described obama as direct and personal in his approach to this disaster adding that the part anship has gone out the window it says a lot about the president, and makes me feel good as an american that people have the right focus. and these are people who have been top surrogates for romney. >> right. right. and i will say that is the silver lining in the horrible tragedy, is you have both sides really working together and very closely, and we don't have to throw stones either way. we can just celebrate that. unfortunately it has taken this to create that but both sides are working together seemingly very well and hopefully the folks on the east coast will get some relief. >> stephanie: we have had other obama surrogates on, and why are

our surrogates so much hotter than theirs including you. >> i was about to say i will take myself out of that and just appreciate their hotness -- >> stephanie: and we will put you right back in. >> yes, what i think we're missing is an actual statistical breakdown of our surrogate hotness. [ laughter ] >> stephanie: it's a landslide. ben, we can't say it enough get out and vote, we have your website posted. any other tips for us? >> no you have to understand your local election rules. in many many states obviously
