cut the early voting and thousands not able to vote until 1:00 in the morning the governor still refused to extend early voting. it's looking like 2000 in florida all over again. we'll find you the what had that's about and a whole lot more here today. let's get the latest, lisa ferguson up in los angeles. good morning. >> hey bill, good morning everyone. better news when it comes to voting. president obama has the lead in early votes although not as big as the least four years ago over john mccain. nearly 30 million americans have already cast their ballots. it is important to note none of these ballots have actually been counted yet. when we're dealing with early voting, we base the numbers on voting affiliations, assuming people are voting along their party lines. democrats have the lead in

florida, iowa, nevada and north carolina. republicans have a small edge in colorado. >> many voters are wondering why can't they cavity their ballots on line. that could solve a huge number of problems, long polling lines and that election day is not a national holiday. experts say it's a security issue and the risk of hacking is too high. we do plenty of other secure things on line, file taxes pay credit card bills enter your social security number, the list goes on. the voting machines have their own fair share of security issues. critics say it would take just $11 and an eighth grade science education to hack the machines used by american voters. there's no way to track the original vote. we can hope for on line voting in the future, but for now, it

being enthusiastic about it, but still kind of sucking it up and getting prepared to vote for him. >> bill: what he said wasn't so bad. >> exactly. >> bill: and we want somebody who won't vote for harry reid. >> they are focused on the economy and jobs and see akin as a republican who will vote for more fiscal austerity. >> bill: if they had even half a brain on economic issues, they would volt for mccaskill, in my opinion. is there any sign that the republican super pacs all of whom promised their going to abandon todd akin have changed their minds? >> they absolutely have. you see a ton of money flowing

back into this race and even through back channels. >> bill: i knew it, i knew it. >> they said exapplication sitly early in the campaign that they would not. >> you called that right after it happened. >> bill: i knew it. you can't believe anything they say. how does it look today is mccaskill going to come back? >> the polls are very close in the state. honestly, i feel uncomfortable predicting what's going to happen, because there are so many republicans who have been on the fence. i think that the polls could be underestimating republican support for akin, because people may feel uncomfortable saying they support him but when they were in the voting booth by themselves and see that there is an r. next to his name, might vote for him. >> bill: i don't hesitate to say

claire mccaskill is going to win. todd akin would be a disaster and embarrassment to the whole country. not far away and related, of course is related in the sense another mail chauvenist pick is richard mourdoch in indiana similar troubles. >> everyone was of course quick to associate what mourdoch said about rape to what akin said about rape. it's an easy association for people to make and that was the problem with him even broaching the subject. i was talking to one source who said when you are this close to an election, there are some things you shouldn't say hitler, rape. >> you never bring hitler into the conversation. >> bill: when you're arguing about rape or having to explain

your position on when rape is ok and not ok, you've lost with that you've lost. >> right. >> >> bill: did mourdoch lose enough you? he's the candidate democrats wanted to run against in indiana. joe donnelly, i mean, he's a blue dog democratic. >> he is also pro life, but he makes an exception for rape, so that's the one difference in that particular area. they are -- the polls have absolutely switched and donnelly is leading now slightly, and it's a huge win for democrats. they've had a lot of races turn out in this really lucky way you know, by. >> bill: democrats can thank the tea party for doing their work for them in the primary in many states. looks like indiana for joe donnelly. how about connecticut? i thought linda mcmain, the wrestling lady up for her second

attempt at the u.s. senate. >> i like that, wrestling lady. >> bill: she's running against a great democratic, congressman chris murphy. she said this morning, by the way, that it's ok to volt for obama, as long as you also vote for me. she's not telling people to vote for romney, she's indicating volt for obama. >> did she reallile? >> they put this on the door knockers that they handed out to people. it's fascinating because linda mcmain donated $150,000 to romney's campaign and is now telling people to vote for obama. it's the height of hypocrisy. >> bill: she notes connecticut is going to go blue. >> you never know if they will switch before election day but

it seems to be trending in murphy's favor. >> bill: i think people feel she's not a serious candidate for the u.s. senate. on the first run for public office, u.s. senate, representing connecticut? >> when your legacy is that you were dealing with fake wrestling, i don't think you get a whole lot of legitimacy from that. >> bill: also you might make some parallels. virginia. >> it has been a really civil senate race. allen has run before, there was the huge controversy that came out of that run yet cain and allen to each other have been surprisingly civil. i've seen polls having him lead by four points. it's looking very good for him. the interesting thing about virginia is it's a presidential

state. whoever wins at the presidential level might have an effect on the senate race. >> bill: or the other way around that tim cain will lift obama. >> right some are saying that he could have coattails up the ballot which would be a really interesting effect. you very rarely see that. >> bill: massachusetts elizabeth warren, slam dunk. >> bill: it's getting close to that point. she's definitely trending ahead. what i have heard is that since she decided to go and nationalize the race, she has been much stronger. people have been respond to go that in massachusetts. >> bill: that's one where democrats are going to dex vote with obama. >> so much of this is about momentum momentum, and it's been up and down, but she clearly the last couple of weeks has had the momentum in her favor. >> bill: congressman john lewis up with her over the weekend.

me. >> bill: shows that their main goal for the last two years at least, if not four, has been to prevent obama from having any or from passing anything that obama could take credit for in any way whatsoever. >> it's been a hugely obstructionist congress, absolutely. there's no reason to think that won't continue. >> bill: i was going to ask you that. so when president obama is reelected and republicans realize that the whole mitch mcconnell's goal of our number one priority is to prevent president obama from being reelected and that's not an option, do you think they'll consider let's do the work of the people and get things done. >> you would hope that that is what they do, but there will be another election after obama is no longer president. there's always another election.

i'm afraid that the thinking in congress right now is always looking ahead to that next election, and it didn't always used to be that way. it used to be that compromise was not a dirty word in congress. i think people still think that if they compromise, it makes it look like they're ceding ground to the other side. >> bill: your prediction is more grid lock. >> if the senate remains in republican hands there's no incentive to bring the sides together. >> bill: other than what they're elected to do, what the american people want and need, you know. >> exactly. >> bill: drives me crazy. rebecca berg, i don't blame you for it, though. thanks so much for coming in today. >> thank you. >> announcer: this is the "bill press show."

unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9% and 171,000 jobs added in the month of october. could have been a lot worse for obama, couldn't it? >> i think it's good for obama because it wasn't bad. that's the easiest way to put it. at this point in the election, most people sort of have frozen in their mind their general sense of where things are going. that's not going to shift much unless there was a big change and there wasn't a big change. a big change down would really play into that last minute argument that if you live anywhere close to a swing state you're seeing about the horrible obama economy and how it's time for a change. >> bill: the administration's able to say, the president's ail to say 32 months of positive job growth, not overwhelming, but positive. i think it's 5.4 million new

private sector jobs that people can count or were created in the last four years takes the wind out of the sails of mitt romney's argument that the economy is not getting better under president obama right? >> the short answer is yes, the economy is getting better. we should acknowledge that this recovery from recession the recession was very bad the recovery has been much weaker than most recoveries from previous recessions we've seen. it's also a different type of recession, different type of recovery and with sort of the big debt crisis that got us into it personal debt, household debt the housing crisis and financial crisis, these are hard things to get out of. >> especially when you have all of them happening at one time, right? >> yes, all of that said, if you're just, most americans haven't lived through anything like that in their lives.

if you're just looking at the pace of the recovery, mitt romney has a very good case to make that this is a much slower recovery than we're used to or would want it to be. what we have seen clearly in the last few months is that the pace of job creation has picked up. again, we're not going gang busters, but it's improving. >> bill: and it is steady, economic rove, all moving in the right direction right? >> yes. >> bill: over an extended period of time. >> right. let's be clear that could stop by the end of the year, the huge fiscal retraction, if a bunch of spending goes away, you could see us back in recession. >> bill: don't you think there has to be a meeting of the minds that we cannot allow ourselves to go over the fiscal cliff even if it means raising some

revenue? >> my guess is that we will absolutely see some sort of a meeting of that minds. now it depends who wins tomorrow, what that meeting of the minds will look like, if mitt romney wins, you will see it look much difference from the congressional republicans then you will see if the president wins. again, the question will be who's going to blink first and will they do it in the next few months or will they punt, you know a six month sort of get out of fiscal cliff free card that they pass to just push off this decision into the start of the next term for whatever that president's going to be, these will be the important questions. >> bill: you said earlier, i just wanted to come back to it, in this election, you've got benghazi obamacare immigration reform there's really only one issue, isn't the there though, deciding the election, it's jobs and the economy.

>> the polling is overwhelming. depends on what all you throw in there for how big that is, if you throw the national debt and government spending into jobs and the economy you have basically almost everyone as their dominant issue. even if you just restrict to jobs and growth, that's still a clear majority of those polls. this is an economy election, has been from the start. almost assuredly why the republicans have nominated mitt romney. it's been the response to mitt romney why they've been responding to them the way they have for more than a year now this is an economy election. >> bill: i was just thinking, peter, there's another reason they ended up nominating mitt romney because the alternatives were michele bachmann, herman cain donald trump. >> rick puree. we forget about rick perry. >> he forgets a lot of things himself. >> from the economy grounds, they looked to texas and said

here is a state doing great and a beloved governor, let's toss him into the mix and obviously he sank rather than swim. >> bill: we do forget about rick perry. romney, one slice of the economy is the auto bailout right? >> right. >> bill: probably looking back, the best decision obama made during his first term, would you agree? >> i would say politically it's the most consequential economic decision he made. >> bill: economic and political. >> right for political purposes, far and away. they spent he pushed through like close to an $800 billion economic plan that stopped the freefall and created three and a half million jobs. that was $800 billion. he spent $85 billion of the tarp funds on the auto bailout

$25 billion is going to be a net cost to taxpayers. that probably saved a million jobs in the supply chains in the auto industry across the midwest and that $85 billion absolutely much more politically consequential. >> bill: mitt romney has come to realize that in the state of ohio particularly, which a republican history would tell us has to win in order to win the presidency, and he finds if he's not winning ohio in the polls and it seems to be because of the auto bailout. >> there's a durability the president has in ohio that he doesn't have across the other swing states, colorado, florida. it's different in ohio, probably what kept michigan from being in play. barring this last minute switch, it would appear to be a big

bleed overinto pennsylvania. it's the idea that it's one thing to spend a huge amount of money on nebulous projects that not a lot of people saw from the stimulus. it's another thing to rescue an iconic industry that everyone around you knows their job depends on in one shape or another. >> bill: right. they see those plants reopen, people rehired new people getting jobs in that auto industry in their communities. and all the suppliers, you know and the people that prop up these jobs. >> right. the president from the start has made the case this would be a good thing for ohio, running on it more or less. he's helped with the fact that sherrod brown has been running on it aggressively. ohio has heard a lot of good things about the auto rescue. democrats call it a rescue, republicans a bailout. that seems to have helped them. if you doubt that, just look at

the jeep ad romney put out last week. >> bill: romney's response is to say first of all well, obama did exactly what i told him he should do, wrong. people have pointed that out. romney would have allowed no federal funds hoping to raise money for the banks. he said obama saved jeep so they could ship the jobs to china where the head of g.m. and every paper in ohio and michigan said wrong. did that backfire on romney? >> we have not seen anything in the polls in ohio to suggest that it worked for him. we haven't seen a huge back lash either. we'll find out particularly in that northeast and northwest ohio tomorrow. we'll find out how big the penalty runs up margins. if they're really, really big maybe that ad did backfire. >> bill: we're talking jobs and

to eight and then when there were so many people in line on saturday, the last day of early voting, a lot of them didn't get to vote. some of them couldn't vote until 1:00 sunday morning rick scott still refused to extend early vote to go allow those people to vote. why? he's afraid too many of them may vote democratic. yes. scott's not alone. thirty states, republicans tried to suppress the vote. now, ask yourself, when is the last time you heard mitt romney ever complain about or condemn efforts to suppress the vote? never, never never. he's part of the plan. my parting shot for today folks. tomorrow senator sherrod brown from ohio, have a good one. see you back here tomorrow.
