in kentucky, authorities in kentucky say a 2-year-old girl has been accidental shot and killed by a .22 caliber rifle he had received as a gift. gift to a fivee old. expanding background checks because they did not want to be seen as helping the president. it is more important to not help the president than to help kids not get shot in the face in their first grade class. he -- in subsequent comments he tried to walk that remark partway back, by noting republicans across the nation not just those in the senate. i see. that's incorrect. if you look at polls 92% of all americans want this. so it's the republicans specifically in congress. last week, toomey placed more of the blame on the president himself saying i would suggest the administration brought this problem on themselves. i think he ran his reelection campaign in a divisive way. really? the kind of way where you win,

you clearly set apart how your policies are different from your opponents. he divided americans, he was using ring sentiment of some americans towards others to generate support of himself. mitt romney was the one who stepped in his own do do with his 47%. really? that's not dividing americans. eye va. joe manchin -- as "the daily beast" writes supporters aim to line up a second shot for it with a new result. usually when you lose you lose and you lick your wounds but all of this polling and all of these senators that are in trouble, i think she is right. this isn't gun control, this gun sense. i'm a gun owner, i come from a gun culture, if i couldn't bring

and she also mentioned in the piece these new groups mayors against illegal guns americans for us is containable gun solutions, and sandy hook promise, which is the lobbying arm of the newtown parents. they are all startups gaining members and money. their very existence says that the old politics might not work anymore on guns. all of these groups are just getting started. he said i bet this will get to the president's desk in this term of congress. he said there is more to go on this fight. i like our chances. so i say yay. i say yay to all of that. we -- we think that the decision to take emergency contraception out from behind the pharmacy counter and make it available to those 15 and older is a really important step forward. that's going to expand access to birth control for people of all ages because right now when it's behind the pharmacy counter like that, women of all ages face barriers and hurdles to getting it. so that decision will move it out. make it more available. that's a big deal. that's important. at the same time we are disappointed by that appeal and we think that access should be further expanded because there's really no reason to have that age restriction. the science is pretty clear that you don't need that scientifically. >> stephanie: that's exactly it you can't say it enough this is not an abortion pill. we went through the stuff

yesterday. if someone is already pregnant. this has no effect correct? >> that's right. >> stephanie: and this is emergency contraception and it is timely and sensitive and that's why it is important, right? that it will be readily available. >> that's right. within five days of unprotected sex, you can take emergency contraception and avoid getting pregnant in the first place. so what we're really talking about here is one form of birth control that can really help curb unintended pregnancy and it matters a lot that it is going to be made more available. we think it should be made even more available and they should not be appealing this. >> stephanie: eric obviously there's all kinds of contraception, condoms whatever that are available not behind the counter -- no one is encouraging 11 year old girls to have sex. this is not encouraging

anything, is it? >> no, and there's plenty of scientific research showing that if emergency contraception is available to people of all ages it does nothing to increase their sexual activity and it does nothing to increase high-risk behavior. what it does is help them avoid unintended pregnancy and not get pregnant in the first place which you would think a lot of folks can support. you know, if you are against abortion, why wouldn't you do everything you possibly could do to prevent abortion. >> stephanie: yes, thank you. this should not be obstructed by politicians, and it is a step backwards for women's health. nobody is encouraging young girls to have sex, but that's exactly -- it goes right to the point. particularly if you are pro life

you should be for this right? >> exactly. >> stephanie: obama's approach to the issue has been heavily influenced with his experience of being the father of two school-aged daughters. he was basically backing up his health and human services secretary who questioned if there is enough data available to show that the morning after pill is safe enough for young girls, but as you say the science and physicians state. >> yeah, the science is really quite clear on this. but the concern that some folks have as parents are valid and important concerns. we face these in the parental notification context too around abortion, right? >> stephanie: right. >> we have to let folks know that, yes, as parents we want our kids to be able to talk to us about this stuff, and we hope they always can, but if for whatever reason they can't. the most important thing we want

for them is that they can get good health care and prevent unintended pregnancy and that's what making emergency contraception more available will help do. >> stephanie: yeah, absolutely. ironically you were saying that studies have shown this does not increase sexual activity. you know what does? abstinence pledges. >> that's right. >> stephanie: it is actually noting only -- stop sexual activity, it has increased. that's what is bad about getting so moralistic around these soert of issues right? >> yeah, i think that's right. and, you know, we have to listen to the science on stuff like this, and decades of real world experience and also strong science is what really shows that emergency contraception is just one more kind of birth control that is safe and

equality. the governor will sign the bill into law once the democratically controlled state house votes in favor of it. that is expected to happen this afternoon. the law will then go into effect august 1st. according to a new quinnipiac poll if the presidential nomination were held today, democrats would give hillary clinton 65% of the vote.
