into turning the middle east into a devastating jihadist earthquake. and the ultimate risk of the redirection of our entire economic system. may it never be. >> michael: sort of noble, but perhaps she should be more worried about her own economic future. she is being investigated by five separate law enforcement agencies. they are looking attack situations that she used money raised for her house race to pay for her presidential bid. a special investigator in iowa is looking into whether her former campaign chairman paid himself out of campaign coffers

and the police department is investigating whether sorenson stole an email list from an iowa school. bachmann responded to the growing chorus of critics, in the calm tone of a flight attendant. >> rest assured this decision was not impacted in anyway by the recent inquiries into the activities of my former presidential campaign or former presidential staff. it was clearly underthat compliance with all rules and regulation was an absolute necessity for my presidential campaign, and i have no reason to believe that is not the case. >> michael: she was one of the top fundraisers in congress. she brought in $25 million for her presidential and congressional campaigns last year. but she also helped democrats

fund raise. direct mail writers are going to have to find new villains. but that's not the only piece of bad news for the democrats. it might be harder for a democrat to beat a reasonable republican than michele bachmann. she barely held on to her seat in the last election and was clearly vulnerable in 2013. >> be assured, my decision was not in anyway influenced by any concerns about my being reelected to congress. i have always in the past defeated candidates who are capable, qualified and well funded and i have very confidence that if i ran, i would again defeat the individual who i defeated last year who recently announced that he is once again running.

say you were surprised. you say it is a great day for america, but she was the person you were running against. she considered not even running last time. so i want to hear what she says about that and then talk to you about that. >> last year after i ran for president, i gave consideration to not running again for the house seat that i hold. however, given that we were only nine months away from the election i felt it might be difficult for another republican candidate to get organized for what might have been a very challenging campaign. and i refuse to allow this decision to put this republican's seat in jeopardy and so i ran and i won. >> michael: do you believe she thought about not running against you? >> michele bachmann is a show horse and we all know that. and she is getting out of this

race, michael, because she can see the tea leaves are going against her right now. our polling information indicates she is in trouble, and she is getting out because of that. and she'll twist and turn and tell you a bunch of things but at the end of the day, michele bachmann never ever lacks interesting things to say, but she does lack rigor. she doesn't ever have the facts quite straight but we're going to miss her michael, because it has been fun watching her twist and turn and say these outrageous things. but they are kind of humorous and fun, but think people of america need better leadership in the 6th district. and that's what we're going to try to do. >> so are you just going to sit back and wait while the republican hopefuls battle it out? >> we're going to keep spreading the message.

let's try to get things done. let's try to bring people together. let's try to find a solution to the real problems and i think the people of the district really want a change. they want somebody who can bring business experience and skill set to the table that understand that working together reaching out, trying to understand the opposition, that's how you get things done, not by ridicule and divide and separate and gridlock, unless that's what you are trying to do. and that's what michele bachmann wanted to do. but her 37th time to try to repeal affordable care act, those are all stunts. people want something to get done in congress. >> michael: let's talk a little bit about the reality to getting there. a lot of the attention that was put on your race was because you were running against michellee bachmann bachmann. if you are not running against

michele bachmann will it be harder to keep the attention on this race? >> there's no question she a fire rod for interests around the country, but at the end of the day, the 6th district is in play. they are probably going to put up another very conservative person to run against me and we'll reach out. but it isn't how much money we make, we want everybody to help us out, but at the end of the day it is a message and who has honesty and integrity and civility on their side. that's what is going to make the difference. let's make sure we don't give the sixth district back to somebody who is just another michele bachmann in different clothes. >> michael: that is clearly something you should talk about. and just between you and me, jim. i want to show you a picture from the republican convention in 2012. you'll see your former opponent in this picture, and you'll

running against michele bachmann, there is so much material there. but michele bachmann we're all going to miss her in a funny way, because these outrageous things -- they are comical if they weren't so sad. she is very divisive and often sometimes mean spirited. but some of these things like how much a trip costs to go over to india or whatever these are just silly silly things. but the benghazi and those, those are very serious things and very hurtful. and we won't miss that. >> michael: yeah, that's a great point. i appreciate you being honest about it. i agree, you would rather run against her because she is easy to attack but it's good to not

nothing about the justice department probe into the email and phone records. on may 15th, holder said this to the house judiciary committee. >> with regard to the potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure material, that is not something that i have ever been involved in or heard of or would think it would be a wise policy. >> michael: and it turns out he did approve a secret subpoena. so his under oath statements have some saying that is perjury. today the house challenged me. and wrote this strongly worded letter . . .

now at the request of the president, holder is headed to various news rooms to speak with bureau chiefs. can the attorney general cover his phone-snooping tracks? joining us now to discuss eric holder and other beltway controversies, jack, welcome. >> michael, good to see you. hopefully i'll be smiling at the end. >> michael: the thing about you that is so frustrating is that you often are. but let's keep going. the gop has beguning for holder for years, but is chasing after him and screaming scandal a smart strategy in the long run? >> sure, i think republicans are finally starting to win. and it is substantively right.

benghazi is worse than 9/11. i want to take a listen. >> oh, sure 9/11 is much worse in terms of what hand but this is much worse in terms of how things were ignored. i don't understand their motivations. >> michael: jack we were with joe williams there. it was on "the young turks." do you still believe that? >> i'm not talking about magnitude. i know this not a lot of internet play. i was talking about in terms of how the government handled things. this was people criticized bush and even clinton for not being prepared for 9/11. benghazi is a situation where the president of the united states let a u.s. ambassador and three others die. he clearly could have saved them and didn't. and i stand by my comment in terms of how the government handled it, i stand by it, worse than 9/11. >> michael: i sort of figured in

it is time for john boehner to serve a subpoena. i think any federal judge will order the president to answer questions. i think the time has come to do that. >> michael: do you think eric holder is going to resign or stay? >> i hope he resigns. i can't understand why obama wouldn't fire him. if this isn't enough to fire an attorney general, what are you waiting for? does he have to commit murder. >> michael: so he is just one step away from murder from what he is done. i want to go to your hapless party. there was a call to rework the platform's ideas. are republicans too focused on scandal now to do anything in politics. >> they see political gain. there's a lot of play in this. obama is going to lose. this will help republicans in the 2014 elections.

this isn't a sexing scandal. everybody can identify politically, and this is what the polling is starting to show everybody identifies with abuse from the irs. >> michael: jack, you just said this isn't a sex scandal like lewinsky, and earlier you said you want the independent counsel back, the reason the independent counsel gone was because of kenneth star's abuse of the office. then you are saying that that rose to a level -- this isn't a sexual -- but if it was such a little thing, that sexual dalience of president clintons why distract this country for so long over that. >> it's not a little thing, michael. but what i'm saying is this -- this staggering number of circumstances is just much worse.

stores and serving great swedish meat balls. joining us now is one of the moms. welcome back inside "the war room." >> thank you so much. >> michael: when you were on the show in march your focus was on lawmakers, why move to the corporate responsibility now? >> we're still pressuring lawmakers. but when the senate voted against background checks in april, they locked a door so we decided to go in through a window. we're going to change the culture in this country. and we realized there are a lot of lax laws and policies in this country, including the policies of american businesses. i didn't realize when i was getting my latte at starbucks, i may be standing next to someone

with a loaded weapon. i don't want to spend my money there. and moms make 80% of the spending decisions in this country. so we're telling moms go to pete's coffee instead. >> michael: how important is it then to change the culture of guns in america and not just the laws? i see you are focussed in both directions. >> one impacts the other. so if the laws change the culture changes, and if the culture changes, the laws will change. so we're going to go after american businesses and pressure them to have gun sense, and then thank those companies that already do. and continue to pressure our congress and state slater. >> michael: yeah and when you go to pete's they have small, medium and large. and you don't need to know another language to order your coffee. you already have over 100,000

members, why is this key? >> we keep hearing this over and over again, that moms have been the missing voice in this for so many years. we had a great million mom march about a decade ago, and we needed group of moms to come along and pick up that torch, and after sandy hook, and finding out that eight children are shot and killed every day in this country we can't afford not to be activists, and we have to keep up this work. it is an important voice. we are the caretakers for the most part of this nation's children, and we have a moral obligation. >> michael: and it's a demographic that i think everybody responds to, mothers. let's talk about a poll out today showing that voters in dark red states show supporting

background checks. these same voters are also unhappy with their senator who voted against background checks. can these numbers change the conversation you are having with lawmakers finally? >> absolutely. these numbers are changing numbers on a somedayly basis. you don't have to be a democrat or republican to believe that we don't have enough gun flaws this country, and our gun violence has become an epidemic. it doesn't matter if you live in a red state, a blue state, or the south or north, this is an issue that all americans agree needs to be solved. and if legislators don't listen to the voters, then we'll have new legislators soon. >> michael: but they didn't

listen last time. people like your group lobby all the time and they said the same thing. i think it was 90% of americans want background checks. how does it change when you hear it from places in the south or these very red states? >> it changes the so-called connecticut effect that this is a one and done. sandy hook happened and people forget and move on and these numbers show that not only are people not moving on even people who would be considered to be on the side of the nra are not moving on. they know we need change, and we are going to make that change. >> michael: you talk about that movement going after legislators, now you are running a grass root's movement groups like yours, moms rising. they have websites. they don't work for you. do you think these groups can create a powerful faux to the

nra and the face of the nra wayne lapierre. >> absolutely. we already are. we can motivate moms online and then get them to act off line and you are seeing that today as an example. ted cruz is in new york city for fund racing, and our moms are twitter bombing him and our moms are on the ground protesting his presence in new york city asking why he voted against background checks. so social media is helping moms get out there. this movement is moving forward and we are winning. >> michael: and mom knows best. thank you shannon. keep up the good work. coming up, the makers of citizen koch join us with their story

>> thanks for having us on. >> good to be here. >> michael: what a unique experience you have had. your film looks at how the supreme court's decision on citizens united impacted politics. why did you focus on scott walker's election in wisconsin? >> well, the citizens united decision is a relatively new decision. and we were interested in seeing its effect on the ground. wisconsin was happening. it was interesting. there was a ground swell. it was the first occupy, and they were dealing with a lot of these issues of the money that is flooding into elections. scott walker came into office alongside the 2010 midterm elections. so we just thought it would be a good place to start and start to piece together this story.

>> michael: and you really couldn't have picked a better place. >> and we came to find through investigative reporting that happened on the ground that, you know david and charles koch were among the biggest contributors to scott walker. they were freed up by citizens united to spend unlimited money on the ground. and they bank rolled scott walker into becoming governor. >> michael: yeah very clearly. teeia i want to ask you, here in "the war room," we're used to looking at strong ties when big money and republicans. but in your film you show republicans who take issue for this. buddy roamer ran for president in 2012 by pledging he would limit campaign contributions to

$100. and we saw what that strategy lead to. >> i would like you to bring a check, but not $35,800 on wall street. 60 bucks. and have your neighbor do that and them a million people do that, and then 5 million do that, and then guess who runs the country? the people do. i thought that's what the constitution said. >> michael: so are there republicans -- because i haven't met them -- but people like roamer who are uncomfortable with the influence of the 1%? >> we met a whole slew of them in wisconsin. people who were just outraged at what their governor was doing. it was affecting them their families and their communities, and dividing the whole state. so those were the republicans who actually are -- guide us through the film. there's a school teacher

in -- in wisconsin. there's a public employee corrections officer, and there's a veteran's nurse, and all of them tells, you know, a different story about how walker's reforms have gutted, you know, their communities. >> michael: karl let's talk about your film a little bit now. it's about money's influence on politics, but you ran into the same dynamic while making your film. can you guide us through that? >> what is it like imitating art? or i don't know what you call it. we were faber -- flabbergasted. we thought public television was

the place to tell the story and tell the story. so we had a wonderful relationship with the editors and it really wasn't until we were accepted at the sun dance film festival and another film dealing with a similar topic dealing with charles and david koch aired and we got caught in the blowback, the pbs affiliate in new york city turns out that david koch was sitting on their board of trustees and was a major donor. >> and it's not even as if he picked up the phone and told them not to air it -- all he had to do was tap it wallet and threaten to pull funding. >> michael: i want to take us through it a little bit too. because the television service initially supported your film

with this initial confirmation . . . so you open that. you are like fantastic. then they sent you more notices of support. then they suddenly pulled their funding. when did you realize that your film was being censored or koched? >> well, you know, when -- when we came up with the title citizen koch, we had this working title, citizen corp and we changed it to citizen koch. and at that time it was about a week after park avenue aired on national pbs. he started to get a flurry of emails, and text messages, and they needed to see this film. they were desperate. it turned out they told us this was a red flag.

so that was when we began to suspect that there would be a problem. we had no idea that they would actually pull our funding and pull our chances for a national public audience. >> michael: yeah, it's hard to imagine how the entire landscape has been changed because of this. what sort of influence do you think these large donors will have on independent film making in general? >> well, i mean i think we have seen it -- we -- we -- i hope we haven't seen the future but we have seen the impact that it can have. and you have people who are ideologically far to the right, and one of the targets has been the arts and public television. well as the public financing for public media goes away, something has got to fill that void. one thing that has happened

recently is david koch has left the board of wnet and took his money with him. and frankly, we think that's a good first step. we want to keep the focus -- the problem is, the influence -- the chilling effect that having these ideologically driven wealthyier wealthy done ors dictating what going on the public airwaves. >> michael: if someone wants to see citizen koch how do they see it? >> go to our website citizenkoch.com. but right now we're looking for outlets. we would love to get it out there, and please help us do that. >> michael: all right. thank you so much. what a journey you have been on. brett ehrlich doesn't hate
