>> stephanie: no, i did not. >> geraldo rivera did that. >> stephanie: he didn't have the decency to wear a hoody. >> you couldn't see the nether regions but you could see enough to know -- >> you could see a hint of -- >> stephanie: i wondered why my google machine told me geraldo rivera trending. here she is, jacki schechner fully clothed in the current news center. >> i warn you not to look. good morning everybody. president obama shifting focus this week, will try to steer a conversation toward the economy in a series of speeches starting on wednesday. he's going to give the speeches that are designed to highlight the benefits of the second term agenda. priorities like healthcare, education, immigration reform. he will talk about ways to expand domestic manufacturing and to continue to revitize the housing sector. as a preview to wednesday's first two speeches, one at knox college in illinois and one in

missouri, this highlights past economic speeches including one at knox college when he was still in the senate. president obama will call for an end to the sequester when the new fiscal calendar starts in october. but he is likely to face the usual opposition from house republicans. tonight in d.c., the president will address organizing for action. the advocacy group created out of his former campaign structure. other featured speakers include senate majority leader harry reid nancy pelosi and cecille richards of planned parenthoods. ofa gearing up for action august which will be an action to get lawmakers to get to work on immigration, gun control and on environmental reform. we've got images coming in this morning from china's state-run tv after an carte quake hit this morning. at least 75 people reported dead. another 584 injured. heavy rain is expected to make rescue and recovery efforts more difficult.

mustache. >> stephanie: oh that one. his facial hair is what jim was referring to. all right. and then obviously everybody talking about that that was pretty extraordinary the president's speech on friday. and i was -- i literally -- you know, as you're watching it, you're like oh, the right wing is going to say a whole bunch of [ bleep ] about this. >> yeah, they did. >> stephanie: i tune into meet the press and i'm like can this guy not say or do anything right for anybody at this point? he's like oh, he didn't give a press conference. he was pushed. how do you know? the president can't say anything on race without taking it from both sides. i thought it was pretty extraordinary and moving and personal. the president on friday. >> obama: when trayvon martin was first shot, i said that this could have been my son. another way of saying that is trayvon martin could have been me. 35 years ago.

>> stephanie: yeah. i thought -- anyway, i just thought it was -- he spoke -- what was that, for like 19 minutes or something. it was a complete surprise. he came in the briefing room. >> no teleprompter. just from his heart. >> stephanie: they weren't able to do that criticism. >> stephanie: because you know, that was an extraordinary moment to go wow this is the president of the united states of america and talking about how this has been him. a lot of experiences that a lot of black people talk about. frankly, as liberal as you can be is white you don't understand it. you haven't been followed in a department store. you haven't been pulled over just for driving a nice car in a nice neighborhood or whatever. so i thought it was extraordinary. the president. >> obama: there are very few african-american men in this country who haven't the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store. and that includes me. there are very few african-american men who haven't

would have been justified in shooting mr. zimmerman because he felt threatened. and if the answer to that question is at least ambiguous then it seems to me that we might want to examine those kinds of flaws. >> that's what i was saying. >> it is trayvon martin is dead because he followed the license and protected him against unstoppable deadly force. >> stephanie: by the way someone else made the point we made on "meet the press" about they said yeah, i haven't noticed the narks -- nra said trayvon martin should have had a gun. where are you wayne lapierrre. fact is he could have been me 35 years ago. he talked about his own experiences in a personal way. the president. >> obama: as difficult and challenging as this whole episode has been for a lot of people, i don't want to -- us to lose sight that each successive generation seems to be making progress in changing attitudes when it comes to race. doesn't mean we're in a post-racial society. it doesn't mean that racism is eliminated. but you know why i talk to malia and sasha i listen to their friends and i see them interact they're better than we are. they're better than we were. on these issues. and that's true in every community that i've visited all across the country. >> stephanie: he said he concluded that americans should have confidence that these kids these days have more sense than

>> senator john mccain who's never shy about criticizing the president happens to be backing him up this time around. senator mccain has told cnn he agrees states that have stand-your-ground laws should take another look, including his own state of arizona. mccain added the president's speech has encouraged him to reach out more to hispanic and african-american organizations. a new quinnipiac poll out today shows a hillary clinton/chris christie presidential match-up in 2016 would be a dead heat in iowa. once again, it is very early to take a look at these sorts of things since neither of those people has said he or she plans to run. however, not stopping a new anti-clinton group from ramping up its efforts the conservative stop hillary pac is announcing leadership team today spearheaded by ted harvey. it is not packed with the high profile usual suspects or strategists and so far plans were unspecific. the group tells cnn it will support anything that's the

in march of 2012 to try to move the attention away from the shooting from stand your ground from concealed weapons and the right wing media decided they were going to tell the truth about trayvon martin and he wasn't this, you know, innocent young kid that was being portrayed and so they came up with a phony pictures of him from facebook and spread them around. started talking about he was a drug dealer. you know, glenn beck, the blaze published a piece suggesting maybe he was a kidnapper an arsonist or a murderer. so, it was definitely -- it was just classic blend of victim. oh, he's dead. this is a problem for the gun community? we'll blame that kid. then they resurrected it after the verdict. it has gone beyond that. ben shapiro at breitbart wrote a column last week saying trayvon martin came from a broken home was a factor in his death. so now his parents are to blame for their unarmed teenager

getting shot. so it's just really awful sort of -- immoral attempt to spin away and blame teenagers. >> stephanie: i miss geraldo -- you said he claimed all female jury would have shot and killed trayvon martin a lot sooner than george zimmerman did. nice. that's nice. you write there's something spectacularly misguided about wanting to turn an unarmed shooting victim into the bad guy and blame him for walking home with skittles and an ice tea. that's what conservative ins in the press have been doing for nearly a year and a half now. and you also you quote a good, kevin drum at mother jones no special conservative principal that says they should be able to shoot anyone who is suspicious. it says local police forces should pretend to investigate the circumstances of a shooting, there's no special conservative principle that says young black men shouldn't wear hoodies. i guess your point is they didn't get involved in this

early on, right? >> yeah. if you go back and look at the very early -- the story sort of emerged february, march of 2012, slowly and gained momentum. and in mid march last year, right wing blogs weren't writing about it. fox news didn't care about the story. so it wasn't like it hit a nerve with them early on. it was only -- when it became clear it was going to become a problem for the gun lobby. it was going to become a problem for people who want to conceal -- carry concealed weapons. it was only when obama was asked a direct question at a rose garden press availability in late march and once obama says anything about anything, that unleashes the hounds and then obama derangement syndromes. so as i quoted someone saying, once it became "a democratic issue" to care about this case,

the right wing media decided it was all fair games and the dead kid was fair games and his family and parents and all of it. but the reason i quoted kevin drum was because i've always wondered, you know, why would the right wing media become so obsessed in a local crime story? why would they turn george zimmerman into a hero? i understand why civil rights leaders would be interested and certainly had concerns about racial injustice and things like that but why this -- you know, became sort of this complete obsession with attacking the victim and supporting george zimmerman and a lot of it had to do with guns and a lot of it had to do with the absolute right wing talk point that racism doesn't exist. if you suggest it does, therefore it becomes a hoax and it is their job to reveal the true hoax. so it touched on a lot of issues but again it is strange for the political partisan press which usually deals with politics and

that stuff was an attempt to say this case doesn't matter. he doesn't matter. the story is not important. and we shouldn't pay attention to it and here's why. because we're going to tell you this kid was really just a thug who deserved it. and the fact that obama became involved only upset them more. what they've seen more recently again is you know, first last year was this case doesn't matter. it's not really racial injustice. now, in the wake of the verdict it was this case doesn't matter because you know, young black people are getting killed in chicago. and so how come we're not paying attention in chicago. what i started to say at the beginning, when people like obama talk about gun violence in chicago, right wing media tells them to shut up because you know, we don't want to hear about gun violence and why are you poking your nose into local crime? >> stephanie: it seems to me, eric, the second amendment crowd picked a pretty shaky hero in george zimmerman.

someone pointed out on the sunday show, something we did last week is you don't hear the nra saying if trayvon would have been armed this would have been better right? >> no, the nra has had no interest in arming minorities in america. and it never becomes a talking point and you're right the first point in terms of picking a shaky folk here, again they realize that early on. there was no real good way to spin this for the nra and this was sort of their worst nightmare. this is what critics of stand your ground legislation was pending claim. this is exactly what they feared. this was the worst-case scenario for the nra so the reaction was -- their allies in the press was let's blame the dead kid. >> stephanie: i hate to say it eric -- you can imagine behind closed doors going thank god it was a black teenager. a black kid right? and not a rich, white frat guy from the university of miami or you know, this really would have

indeed be looking at higher costs in order for premiums to go down, are we at the mercy of competition. thanks for your continuing information on this complex issue. melissa. >> first of all, it is medicaid, not medicare. medicaid is for those who need financial help who don't make enough money. so there is a difference. a lot of states decided not to expand medicaid which is totally a state decision and it is ridiculous because the federal government was going to cover 100% for the first three years. then only down to 90% it is not going to cost the states very much and it would provide healthcare for the poor. boo on north carolina for that one. i would tell melissa, this is important for people to understand. don't give into the fear and confusion. it is not that confusing. the states that opted out of

running their own exchanges they're participating in the affordable care act. they'll be run by the federal government. which is what we were lobbying for in the first place. you have more bargaining power and more control when there is a nationally-run mechanism. each state as they run their own, that's ideal when there is a state that is actively participating but if you've got a state that's reluctant, it is good for the federal government at this point to get involved. at least there will be some standards. >> stephanie: i know we're just speculating but do you think, you know, is there going to be a big difference between states that are being cooperative. blue states where they are cooperating and setting up their other exchange or do you think the ones in red states like -- melissa is talking about, if they're run by the federal government, will there be an apreachable difference, do you think? >> it is tough to tell. melissa brings this up.

blue cross blue shield in north carolina is almost the only insurer in north carolina is a problem nationwide. one or two insurers control the majority of the market. the exchanges will allow smaller companies to participate or companies that aren't normally in the individual market in that state to enter and participate in the exchange. so she will get competitive prices and an opportunity to comparison shop. i think what i would guess is blue cross blue shield is doing at this point is it is afraid of losing its monopoly and afraid of losing the state at this point. it is sending out this information to fearmonger and get people signed up for new plans before the exchanges are up and running or open for enrollment in october. so if you enroll in a plan, you're committed. you can't go shop on the exchange. >> stephanie: interesting. didn't we just hear that blue cross -- blue cross blue shield has opted out of the exchange

you're going to offer a better product or your prices will be competitive, that's only a benefit for consumers. can't imagine anthem would opt to stay out of the exchange and by the way we're more expensive and we're giving you less. it seems like a rotten business move so the only way that that could be of benefit to them is if they're going to offer a better product or try to offer a better product. but it does seem like that's likely. why would you not want to be in the mix. where all of the people will be shopping. >> stephanie: i think that's a really important point you made. out of the box there is they could be very well trying to scare you into doing something before the exchanges start and they have to compete. people should not overreact and sign up right away necessarily right? >> wait until october. wait until you can sign up and look at the exchange plan. there's so many facets of this. the most exciting part of it is i think you'll finally be able to see what you're getting for your money. you'll finally be able to look and say this is what's offered. this is how much it costs. this is what this plan gives me.
