india where officials say at least twenty one people have died in the stampede the incident happened in the country's financial hub mumbai on a foot bridge leading to the elphinstone railway station during morning rush hour dozens of people who were injured have been taken to nearby hospitals it's reported the bridge was overcrowded with people taking shelter from heavy rainfall all videos are circulating right down social media showing some smartphone footage of the incident the train stations connects two of the city's major local lines police say the stampede was triggered by overcrowding in those heavy rains believe people were seen trying to rescue fellow commuters who were trapped in the stampede this is left many indians angry and they're calling out the train operator for negligence one lawyer writes at the realm unsworn enough now this unfortunate unacceptable hope accountability will be fixed instead of shifting blame

a lawyer user says the mumbai stampede is an extremely sad turn of events authorities must improve basic commute needs of india's financial capital indian president and has tweeted to say that he is anguished by the loss of lives in the stampede in mumbai condolences to the bereaved families prayers with injured. to spain now and the countdown is on for a contested around referendum in the region of catalonia local authorities are determined to go ahead with the vote on breaking away from spain madrid says sunday's referendum is illegal and cannot go ahead allowed to be allowed to go ahead now more than seven and a half million people live in the semi autonomous region of catalonia barcelona being its capital catalonian officials are calling for a peaceful vote but thousands of extra police officers have been sent into the region and they've seized millions of ballots. it's hard to ignore what's
10:04 am
happening here in barcelona and across catalonia the abundance of catalan flags isn't something new in this well the part of northeastern spain but their significance has taken on a greater meaning ahead of the unauthorized independence referendum. catalan society has long been divided you know what is best for the future of this region of seven and a half million people recent polls have shown those in favor of independence stands at around forty percent but our divisions in catalonia are growing deeper. in order to understand we met noémi and event two sisters from boston who run a small bar in the center of the city marianna is in favor of an independent catalonia noaimi wants catalonia to remain part of spain that national identity is central to their differing opinions. but. i feel spanish and

catalan i'm not embarrassed to have two different cultures and i'm in which by both of them i speak two languages and it's nice to have this option. as a part of the rest of the country. sundays blind vote is a constant presence and conversations among family and friends in catalonia often leading to a heated debate. and have dialogue sometimes. it's very important for people to know that family relationships haven't broken dein and need to have groups of friends. not fighting each other on the streets. able to have peaceful dialogue. but the future of catalonia and the independence vote isn't

a black and white issue in a recent survey carried out in the region four and five catalan said they would in favor of holding referendum. get in t's as a solution to the current political crisis with emotions running high is there a middle ground for noaimi and and both sides in the debate. i want to vote but i would vote. today tomorrow whether it's vote or. even in the. referendum has raised many questions about the future status of this region. and with me here in the studio right now is marie copperhead she is a representative for the catalonian government here in germany and she belongs to the republican left of catalonia party which is pro independence thanks so much for coming in this morning having me how sure are you under the conditions that we've
10:07 am
just been talking about that this referendum will in fact go ahead well we saw the images and the people are determined to have a referendum and that's the point that's what it is about that people want to vote so that's why the current government has to hold they were friend i'm ok so you're convinced that in spite of the ballots being seized the police being out in force that the votes going to happen anyway yes where to turn and yes ok now is the door to dialogue with madrid closed why why is there no discussion going on between catalonia and madrid right now spain's economy minister suggested catalonia could be offered more money greater autonomy wouldn't that be enough to satisfy what you're looking for yeah he said so yesterday which is very late in fact we are asking for an annual state of datona me from twenty five on which was the first try to to renovate and to modernize our state your enemy and we
10:08 am
have been taught that it's not possible to modernize the menace to a different part of the tonia and spain for so many years and it's from twenty ten on then people go massively on the roads and ask for independence the current government says ok let's see what people really want or how are the merit majorities as the majority of pro or. friends are not if i can jump in there a recent poll in july shows forty nine percent of tagalongs are opposed to independence so so why have this referendum you know when no is going on is winning then we will have anticipated election very quickly but we need to be clear on that point we need to have this this. by a question we want to have an independence forgotten on your not because if not we're always talking about the same thing again and again and there is no doubt dialogue with madrid because madrid isn't willing to talk about certain topics here
10:09 am
but madrid has pointed out that this referendum has no basis in the country's constitution and that in fact it's illegal what our advisors and our experts say that in fact it is and we also call call the international legislation on civil rights where in the article one has said that people have the right of self-determination ok mary top rights from the catalonian government here in germany from the republican the left of catalonia party thanks so much for being with us. well catalonia at leaving spain would cause a huge political shake up in the economic ramifications for both sides would also be significant out of seventeen regions catalonia is spain's most prosperous tourism industry are important there in the region accounts for almost twenty percent of the nation's economic output per independence business owners in the region say that every day to go it alone but a split brigs it does not come without complications. the poblano district of

barcelona where the startup temp water has its offices its team has developed a compact water filter that it hopes will soon dominate the market for saloon has been a great place to set up business but now there are doubts. barcelona is a cosmopolitan city teeming with top talent. if the city becomes less cosmopolitan as a result of the referendum that will be really difficult for us. companies have been leaving for years new businesses are arriving but not enough to compensate for the losses and baker and independence opponent who is a boy who thinks things will only get morse. if independence goes through it will unleash an exit as companies want to be in europe or in the capital . for catalonia that would mean a drop in economic output rising unemployment and higher taxes. would

collapse economically. i mean even so many employers support catalonian independence this company produces detergents the owner feels the region would do better on its own than as part of spain but he's nervous about the referendum. we should be concerned with what's coming but be ready to take this courageous step i think there's no way around this crisis and action needs to be taken. in an attempt to cover its bases the company has taken a more international approach to reduce its dependence on the rest of spain. we've prepared a crisis plan even though we're a small company but if we put our heads together and thought long and hard about how we can best prepare for the challenges we might expect in the future or. if
10:12 am
we're going to get that many business owners are taking a wait and see approach this is also true in germany in spain more german businesses have set up branch offices and catalonia than any other region some have set up plans. but there's a mixture of suspense and anxiety and if you believe the process will be orderly. if an independent claim is pushed many companies would probably relocate that tap water they'll cross that bridge when they get there my advice and. no one knows what'll happen is if there were no more euro or membership in the e.u. we'd have no other choice. spain is in turmoil but both opponents and backers agree on one thing uncertainty will likely continue well past the referendum vote. our correspondent called ahead of reason is it the stock exchange in frankfurt so let's get the take from germany's financial capital on this issue conrad one of people there saying and does this regional issue have the potential to become
10:13 am
a problem for europe and for financials as well. yes it does helen spain's economy this year is expected to grow at a rate of around about three percent and of course people in the financial world are now seeing the risk not only for the spanish recovery story but for the recovery story of the whole euro zone if this conflict about catalonia gets worse and people i talk to also are very critical of the way that the government the central government in madrid has handled the crisis so far hardening the confrontation only risks that something like the brics it happens a bad development because of government failure or ended now other news let's put it this way folks fagen has their well managed to surprise the markets this morning with some rather unpleasant news tell us more about that. yes with

future in the digital age it's the first east summit in tiredly dedicated to digitalisation an area where europe hopes to become a global leader topics on the agenda include cyber security and the free flow of data in europe the leaders are also set to discuss proposals from french president manuel mccall on overhauling tax rules for digital giants like facebook and google . more of what's happening at this summit let's cross over to d.d. abuse max hoffman covering it for us in tal and max with the focus squarely on europe's digital future where you are right now walk away expect to come out of the talks there. well there are two movements here basically first of all you have the hosts stone you know who are sort of the poster boy of digitalisation in a digital society in the european union they want to unlock what they say is the digital potential of the european union and they're asking they're calling for
10:19 am
a fifth freedom you know the european union is based on four freedoms and they want a fifth one which would be data and information to be able to cross borders without any kind of obstacles but that might be hijacked here today a little bit because germany italy and france want to talk about something else they want to talk about the taxation of digital of the digital economy for now those companies like amazon and google are taxed where their headquarters are but they want to tax them where the revenue is which with course would be better for them because the headquarters are all in the united states but companies like amazon and google are making money in the european union as well ok so digitalisation getting a new prioritization on all sorts of levels this summit does come as we pointed out straight after the french president laid out his vision for a more integrated future for europe and i was a topic of debate at a dinner last night what sort of reactions to it have you been hearing. well
10:20 am
leaders are starting to arrive here and they're all pretty positive about that because they all do agree that the european union needs an overhaul for many things but they don't agree exactly on how to do that so what they're trying to do is not take the window the sales of ammonia in my call but you can also already see the competing visions for example from the e.u. commission itself and the commission president juncker put it this way during the dinner he said we want to repair the roof of the european union and then when you remark home wants to reconstruct the whole building so they will have to find some kind of compromise but everybody trying to stay positive and and have that five actually having a french president who is so much in favor of the european union is a new experience at least lately here for the leaders ok with all this building or rebuilding going on and how does this summit fit in with all the competing ideas out there you mentioned. well digitalisation is probably
10:21 am
probably the most important topic for the european union of the future they need to get their act together otherwise when the traditional economy traditional industries fizzle out there won't be any more revenues it's what will create the wealth of the future they know that they need to do something because in the top twenty list of all you know the most important internet companies there's not one european company so this is a very important part of the step by step approach they have to rebuild the european union ok max thanks for that for now max often bring us up to date will have much more of course from that summit on digitalisation in holland thanks very much max. on out of some of the other stories making the news this hour the so-called islamic state as reused released an audio recording of its leader of a buck here a bug in it he says he will continue to fight that despite recent setbacks he had been rumored to be dead but with this the last his last recording released last year but the u.s. says it has no reason to doubt that this recording is authentic. one thousand

a supermarket in southern germany s. and five poisoned bottles of baby food or later discovered there. the manhunt is on this suspect is believed to have placed poison baby food in this supermarket in the southern city if it takes hoffman he warns other cities in europe are next unless he's paid over ten million euros under the mine and this is an exceptionally severe case of extortion and we have to assume that we're dealing with a very ruthless six torsion who's willing to go to great lengths to get what he wants and mention who's even prepared to kill in an e-mail the suspect told several local supermarkets that he contaminated five jars police say they were able to find all of them the suspect has threatened to poison even more police say he may have accomplices and urging people to be alert and check supermarket products for

byron bosses explained the start of the season hadn't met expectations. their fans seem to agree. i think byron has high standards and is currently into latino didn't really live up to. what he might have had in mind was to try and give some of the younger guys a little bit more playing time maybe he wanted to set up a changing of the guard at any rate it didn't work out well. not that it's just because you can see that the players aren't giving their all anymore it was great under high kicks and guardiola and i was not the same and leaving out robin and homeowners and was a buying fan and i can't understand infections as banff and the club it hired the fifty eight year old to make a champions league breakthrough he'd won the trophy at ac milan and real madrid but he couldn't take biron past the quarter finals after nine competitive matches this
