4:00 pm
this is the new block from berlin a showdown in spain over catalonia has plans to hold a separatist referendum the spanish government says that the vote is illegal and won't go ahead but cattle and leaders insist that they have got everything in place
4:01 pm
and that the people's voices will be heard. also coming up a deadly rush hour stampede in mumbai at least twenty two people die after commuters crowded railway bridge and there are fears that that number could rise. and dozens of rohinton drowning as they attempt to flee violence in myanmar the united nations calls on the country to end its nightmare treatment of muslim minorities. plus the latest blow to a political opposition in russia putin critic alexina vaal news says that he has been detained by police on his way to address a pre-election rally he's accused of organizing a lawful public meetings our moscow correspondent has the latest. and the most expensive t.v. series in german history gets its debut babylon berlin is set in the decadent one thousand twenties germany and our culture editor has seen it his verdict has come.
4:02 pm
later in the show. i'm sara kelly welcome to the program it's great to have you with us. in spain the countdown is on for a contested referendum in the region of catalonia local authorities are determined to go ahead with a vote on breaking away from spain madrid says that sunday's referendum is illegal and cannot be allowed to take place more than seven and a half million people live in the said the autonomous region of catalonia that you see on the top right part of your screen there catalan officials are calling for a peaceful ballot but thousands of spanish police officers have been sent into the region to prevent people from voting. it's hard to ignore what's happening here in barcelona and across catalonia the abundance of cattle influx isn't something new in this wealthy part of northeast. but their significance is taken on
4:03 pm
a greater meaning the head of the unauthorized independence referendum. catalan society has long been divided over what is best for the future of this region of seven and a half million people recent polls have shown those in favor of independence stands at around forty percent but are divisions in catalonia growing deeper in order to understand we met knowing me and mary on the side of it two sisters from barcelona who run a small bar in the center of the city ariana's in favor of an independent catalonia knowing me once catalonia to remain part of spain their national identity is central to their differing opinions. i feel spanish and catalan i'm not embarrassed to have two different cultures and i'm in which by both of them i speak two languages and it's nice to have this option if. i only hope i don't share any of the ideas or traditions or cultures of cost of the rest
4:04 pm
of the country. with sunday's planned vote it's dominating conversations among family and friends in catalonia often leading to a heated debate. you know. no way to work and have dialogue and sometimes talk of a day without speech and it's very important for people to know that family relationships haven't broken dine and need to have groups of friends. that mean it was you know it was going out fighting each other on the streets. catatonic able to have peaceful dialogue. but the future of catalonia and the independence vote isn't a black or white issue in a recent survey four and five catalan said that they were in favor of holding a referendum with all the legal guarantees this is allusion to the current political crisis. but with emotions running high might there be a middle ground for both sites and the debate. see what it will have you noticed as
4:05 pm
middle ground where we should be allowed to vote. you know what that bit about it i want to fight but i would point you to independents today tomorrow whether it's in any who vote or you and i don't even independents. the catalan referendum this race many questions about the future status of this region. and for more on that future let's bring in his very own pablo foley elliot's he's standing by for us in the spanish capital winterize hello to you pablo tell us just first and foremost is this vote likely to go through because as we've heard there in your reporting madrid has impounded at least twelve million ballot papers and they've also shut down websites related to the vote. well that's the million dollar question sarah will it take place according to the regional government it will they are one hundred percent determined to hold this vote on this despite of course all these
4:06 pm
ballot papers. confiscated by the spanish police but of course the catalyst for someone has said yes actually i was there yes so i think the best is if we hear straight from him because he spoke you know in an interview today and explained exactly what will be happening on something. you know when a formidable we have this time you have to find a part of the council on government was already prepared for difficulties in the run up to this vote for the spanish state has made excessive use of its police forces everything is ready for the more than two thousand polling stations they have papers here and ballot boxes that they have bowled they need so people can express that opinion and the little kid a kitten in a particular can do with. well that was the cattle and regional president catalyst which the monkees obviously started of the vote on sunday but of course here in the dritte it's a very different opinion the spanish government headed by prime minister mariano rajoy said that absolutely not it will not be taking place he is stressed that it
4:07 pm
is an illegal vote and they are discussing essentially what may. if you're going to take on sunday to ensure that people cannot vote so part of those are the views as we've just heard from from the top of spanish politics let's talk a little bit more about the people we know that you were actually just in catalonia you were in barcelona a few days ago what was the feeling there about everything that's been transpiring . well the first word that i came back to madrid thinking was confusion people are not very sure what's going to be happening on sunday if you course of course you've got these mixed messages from the regional government and then from the central government for being us not to vote for a majority and then in barcelona saying you should go vote for what i understand a lot of people is that they're quite nervous there's a feeling of tension and there's a lot of protest on the street a lot of people are going to go out on sunday it's of course it's on the it's a family day people are going to make the most of that and they said that they will try and vote jennifer is now here in a kind of
4:08 pm
a squeeze them on set and he said now that there will be places for people to go on their ballots it's basically a feeling of complete and utter confusion that's the that's the sense that i got when i was in barcelona and also not knowing really what is going to happen on sunday with regards to at the measures that the central government are going to take. us with the latest from spain where it's anyone's guess as to whether or not this vote will go ahead in catalonia over the weekend thanks for your reporting. there and as those protests take place you might imagine that there has been a lot of reaction on social media let's bring in our social media editor was not has right now has read me who has been tracking the very latest from our sister studios bring us up to speed what are you seeing online. hi now what we're seeing on social media is overwhelmingly pro independence but that doesn't mean that it's necessarily reflecting the reality on the ground we're seeing lots of protests that people have posted they've posted videos of protests on social media here we have
4:09 pm
a video of thousands of cattle and firemen rallying in support of independence barcelona's for firemen occupied catalonians history museum i'm furling a pro independence banner. but the picture is quite complex this user here posted pictures from a catalonian anti independence meeting so there are also catalans who are opposed to the referendum as we've heard before and the mayor of barcelona koolau has posted this letter to twitter asking twenty seven european mayors to support their call for the e.u. to mediate between the cattle and spanish governments and it's also important to note that seven hundred fifty kaplan mayors were charged with civil disobedience misuse of office and also misuse of public funds for allowing people to vote there is a new report by reporters without borders has come to come that came out
4:10 pm
a few days ago and it shows that we're seeing suppression on both sides the report describes the catalan pro independence government's constant pressure on local and foreign media harassment of critical journalists by separatist movement hooligans on social networks attempts by crowds of demonstrators to intimidate t.v. reporters and so on so we can see there is a general poisonous climate on the press freedom in the country given that climate how is this impacting others a session as movements. well spain is a pruitt pluralistic country and there are also distant languages like. basque and of course catalan languages spoken alongside spanish this twitter use a here as posting something that is interesting because it says today catalonia and
4:11 pm
tomorrow basque country and we also have the differences session as movements who are also using the opportunity to speak up in favor of independence for example the irish partition fane let's have a look at this video here. you are standing up for their own right to their own future in advance of those in the president's referendum the message must be clear most have the right to vote to choose their own future. for the fender and exercise in this right so you can see that there is also support from outside of the country and also the first minister of scotland nicola sturgeon has posted in favor of the referendum was led house right now as remain with the latest from our social media desk thanks so much. and let's get a quick check now of some other stories making news around the world several people have been killed in a suicide bombing in the afghan capital kabul
4:12 pm
a bomb detonated outside of a shiite mosque following friday prayers there's been no claim of responsibility for the attack which comes just two days before the muslim festival of assura. german police are searching for a man who slipped a lethal poison into food products on sale in southern germany including baby food police say that the alleged perpetrator sent an e-mail threatening to poison more products across germany and elsewhere in europe unless he was paid millions of euros. officials in to a group of islands in the pacific have evacuated residents due to volcanic activity some eleven thousand people were told to leave the island of day the island is home to the marinara volcano which has been increasingly active in recent days there are fears that it could unleash a bigger option. united nations chief antonio is calling on myanmar's leaders to end the nightmare facing rohinton refugees fleeing the country his comments come
4:13 pm
after the drowning deaths of dozens of rohinton refugees whose boat capsized off the coast of bangladesh many are still missing in the last month more than half a million have fled myanmar because of a violent crackdown by the country's military against groups that it describes as terrorists. schools over huge refugees lined the shows over each in bangladesh. they were fleeing violence in myanmar when they a good cup sized in the bay of bengal. most of the dead women and children. so fivers are now burying their friends and family but their journey is not over. this is where they're headed a refugee camp in bangladesh basic supplies are scarce. humanitarian
4:14 pm
organizations working here seem to be overwhelmed people need to be drawn and clean and they need to have a place to sleep so these are the immediate needs obviously for that we need money bangladeshis have been very generous but individuals cannot address this need even the bangladeshi government cannot address this me with the united nations security council frustration over the crisis is mounting to the united states is now calling for action against military leaders in myanmar formerly known as burma. we cannot be afraid to call the actions of the burmese authorities what they appear to be a brutal sustained campaign to cleanse the country of an ethnic minority condemnation but myanmar rejects claims of ethnic cleansing the buddhist majority still says violence against the muslim minority is not based on religion but to
4:15 pm
fight terrorism. and wish to stress that no ethnic cleansing and no genocide. ethnic cleansing and genocide are serious charges and they should not be used lightly. as the un's most powerful body grapples for a solution. engine arrives at the border with bangladesh since august the number of revenge of feeling myanmar has talked to half a million. you're watching news still to come on the program after a horror week of six losses for german clubs in europe we check in on two teams battling to get back on the european stage. but first ben is here now talking about the cloud over germany's car industry and a bit you heard about this bill the diesel gate bill just hit thirty billion dollars for fox wagon the share price was cents getting on friday after the german
4:16 pm
firm announced a profit warning in the third quarter the w. says its bottom line is suffering from ongoing buyback and refit activities in the u.s. in the wake of the emissions scandal become a custos the recall is proving to be significantly longer and technically more demanding than expected and would likely end up costing another three billion dollars. contribution is at the frankfurt stock exchange for us just how bad is another three billion for v.w. conrad. well the money is one thing but what's really bad for folks flying is that people here are now discussing whether this might not have been the last profit warning from fox why this profit warning now is about cost in the united states what about the money here in germany remember that folks one was allowed by the german government to equip the cars where the diesel cheating happened with the new software which is cheaper and easier solution then installing
4:17 pm
a new hardware in those engines but car dealers folks who aren't dealers say that this is not enough that the customers are very angry that they want the more expensive hardware solution so it's not farfetched to speculate about you know even more costs for folks who aren't here in germany because if i can chime in despite the investor resentment the comic or itself seems to be quite resilient. well yes the car sales worldwide have kept up pretty well china is false ones largest market nobody drives diesels there so the diesel scandal didn't play a very big role there what's more folks working has done a lot to polish its reputation at the last international auto fair here in frankfurt the company tried to communicate an image of humbleness of we have
4:18 pm
learned from the things that went wrong in the past and while some people in the world might see the way that the diesel scandal is handled here in germany as a typical german self flagellation one can also see this as you know a long open honest process of trying to find solutions and that's probably good for reputation too and the reputation of top executives some of whom are in jail. well yes yesterday another manager. member of the audi board was put in vest a gate of cost. and the criminal offenses of this case of course are very important and it's worth noting that this manager of west put it custody there was very close to martin winterkorn and of the x c four x. one and the man who is now c.e.o. of folks who are the plugs only thickens thank you conrad. beijing has decided
4:19 pm
to ban bitcoin chinese regulate his of one service provider is to stop accepting the crypto currency by the end of october or face consequences one of the largest bitcoin platforms b t c c has said it would stop trading completely by tomorrow september thirtieth in the last few days deals involving the digital currency have slowed to a trickle but china's clampdown has really dampened interest because markets in neighboring south korea and japan have reported a surge in activity since the announcement. well let's get more of a take on what's going on with our asia correspondent andrea hang who's in singapore for us how a china is measures actually affecting the trade in big coin all up would you say. well exactly like you said we have the market in japan and south korea bustling about say with china is quite market it is alive and kicking one reason why why is
4:20 pm
the nation behind this phenomenon it is a bit of a trade that it finds because we have down comes a discount it reaches all these great prices. what's beijing's actually actual problem with crypto cards is can you explain that. well that suicide is the calling so to speak on the inside on one side rather. is claiming that there are a lot of security concerns as well as your regularity is found in some ninety eight percent of the trait but we can't really what's happening on the other side of that coin is that they're not very familiar with the whole system so therefore the clampdown is also stop any kind of a capital outflow which they have been trying to do to ease their debt pile but exchanges on the only way to trade bitcoins through chinese investors have access to online sites they do indeed as difficult as it is right now they do have
4:21 pm
alternatives for spots to take them from and then we're talking about over the counter to it as well as offshore today it's particularly if you're not registered your wallet or your idea is not registered with the authorities that said however that china it is said to be working towards the benzene digital currency in the future how do you know how far that future is we're not sure but all depends on how best investments are being made and what improvements are being need to the big quite system and rancorous in singapore thank you very much and how about this insurance company might soon have to offer special coverage for don't damage in germany the owner of this shiny orange colored mclaren well you see it in the middle there it is puck his sports car near a field the don't keep it was grazing that decided to take a bite out of the car police believe the animal had mistaken the expensive race car
4:22 pm
for a giant carrot and see the similarities you can also see the damage there a german court ordered the don't to pay up to five thousand eight hundred yours. about that sarah. that's from the giant carrot really bad he made an ass out of that it was probably a little metallic i think. they can survive for the latest on where to turn out distance for its news and we have chris harrington here on the set with us because we're talking about the bundesliga which is back this weekend but it is coming off of a disastrous run of form for german clubs and europe and a sensational sacking at byron munich cress you have to tell us a little bit more first about this disastrous run what is going on with these german clubs pulled out a stat from the history books nine hundred eighty one was the last time six german clubs lost on a particular match day and what we're looking at the champions league first let's talk about that the big competition by losing the p.s.g.
4:23 pm
as you mentioned costa second of carlo and so lucky they do look like they are destined to advance to the knockout round but it doesn't look that good for dortmund dortmund they lost a real madrid and they've been tough against real madrid at home never losing but they did lose recently and they've looked like they're struggling to advance as well and then we have leipsic the new kids on the block you know more was expected of them but in all honesty the first time that they appear on such a premier competition is not a big shock that they're underperforming hoffenheim talk about the lesser smaller competition the europa league hoffenheim right now they don't look like they'll advance in cologne have to or two club surprisingly in the competition making returns back to the competition it's surprisingly we don't see. another big clubs but although no lack of goal production and lack of performance so i wouldn't fall for those for the germans so chris tell us a let's be a little proactive here what does the german side do you think you need to do in
4:24 pm
order to get more competitive ok let's look at byron meeting marmie because the biggest club in germany the most successful in this particular competition they have a cap a spinning cap maybe they should take a page out of p.s. g.'s book and start spending for the premier players so they could be. more competitive on that particular state and then you can look at just the way overall german clubs have been investing their money a lot of clubs work you know you could argue hamburg as well have been spending their money poorly they can spend better but ultimately i do think being a professional sport they're going to have to pay for premier players to have an immediate impact and be competitive at this point now speaking of bahrain. now speaking of bahrain ok now bahrain. their big test will come their big test will come on sunday yes we're just wait for things to get in line going to travel here to britain and to face hits of before that there's a whole lot of action there's a whole lot of action for the but as they can fans look forward to around seven
4:25 pm
kickoff tonight with shock and they host a labor couzin now the match pits two traditionally big sides together who have been struggling to regain their former glory on paper sawka looked a stronger but then again laver couzin certainly like coming to play in their stadium. the last time shall co-hosted leyva couzin steffen piece things eighty ninth minute header snatched three points for the visitors and left the royal blues empty handed before that april twenty sixth seen the overgenerous hosts collapse the two up to give clave accused three goals and the win and it's not just bogey team blues that shellac a current front line goes into friday's clash with the goal scoring problem. but it's why two in six games isn't very much about if you look at the chances we're creating and we're certainly not harmless if you hadn't the new designs india i was on the thomas goal scoring is not
4:26 pm
a problem for laver couzin at the moment kevin vala netted twice in the three nil rounds of hamburg last week and debutant lucas ario looks like a handy sit to. a modern score he gave a direct assist and overall he's shown what a great player he is always must but laver coup is not a high kill hellish can be shaky on the road this might just be shouted chance to celebrate a first home win in this fixture for more than three years. so cross i mean what are we to make of that carlo and a lot will biron do you think opt for another star coach i mean what is the best way going forward and that's the big question is right in everyone's head right now carly to make an early exit no one expected this but in my opinion you leonardo's mind is one coach that has definitely hurt himself to become part of bard munich's radar he's undefeated against buyer but he has
4:27 pm
a contract until twenty twenty one and a half and higher his current club but who knows biron might decide to shell out the money and pick up on now goes might he is a favorite of barn in the end is even admitted that he would like to because of myron one day and then thomas to call thomas to go was victorious over myron to earn him self a german cup while he was the coach of. dortmund he has also been in the rumor mill but thomas tuco had an early exit from dortmund because he had a rift with management and i'm not sure really hone is buyers present or a room to go would appreciate that so who's to say willie said you all has the reins right now so we'll have to see how he fares against it how about how another team is going to fare for example because we know that cologne is also making some changes i bringing in claudio preside a. good move for them would you say now cologne has been suffering because they have no office yet due to the departure of anthony would this and one thing working in fizeau's favor preserve has scored one hundred ninety one goals i mean he does
4:28 pm
have a stat to be proud of as a form player in the bundesliga but he's thirty nine years old age is could be a factor in this case we'll have to see if he can motivate cologne to improve the size or the bottom of the table as we speak press harrington with the very latest from our sports desk breaking down what all of these moves mean for us thank you so much as always ok. you're watching t.w. news still to come on the program a deadly rush hour stampede in mumbai we will ask our india correspondent if it could have been prevented. i'm sorry kelly in berlin we are back in a few minutes to see that. the traditions as they belong in the home. that dreams say they need to be free. women in egypt. many feel confined

and white. in countries like russia china turkey people are told it's that's not and if you're a journalist there and you try to get beyond that you are facing scare tactics intimidation. and i wonder is that where we're headed as well. my responsibility as a journalist is to get beyond the smoking mirrors it's not just about being clear and balanced or being neutral it's about being truthful. when he was born golf and i were getting to. this is d w news live from berlin i'm sara kelly our top stories thousands of students have rallied in barcelona to defend catalonia is right to hold an independence referendum on sunday the government to madrid says that the referendum
4:31 pm
is illegal and has vowed to stop it from going ahead. at least twenty two people have died in the stampede in india the incident happened during morning rush hour in mumbai on a foot bridge connecting two railway stations the bridge was reportedly overcrowded with people taking shelter from heavy rain dozens of people injured in the crash have been taken to nearby hospitals. desperately trying to help people out of the crash. this narrow bridge of nowhere to escape when falling debris triggered a stampede. some people leapt over the railing while others were trampled to death . because where there were too many people on the bridge people were rushing to get tight and there was nobody to help they were suffocating and they just wanted to get out of there so they found on each other. this was the scene on the bridge minutes earlier it's links to busy railway stations and at rush hour it was full of
4:32 pm
people moving in both directions local media reporting that commuters have been complaining about overcrowding for days some say this was an accident waiting to happen people are mourning and demanding answers from the authorities. high level inquiry i have ordered a high level inquiry the chief safety officer of western railways will inspect the location under do an investigation and will explain the cause of the incident so the thousands of people who use the bridge every day urgent safety concerns must be addressed from now on that commute will take them across the site of a tragedy the question why is whether it could have been avoided. let's get more now on that very question we are joined by the w.'s india correspondent sonia found
4:33 pm
a car sonia let's take up that question that we heard at the end of our report was this a freak accident or could it have been prevented. well authorities here are blaming a combination of overcrowding and heavy rains for that tragedy today in mumbai but could have been prevented many here seem to think so i mean we heard a lot of reports that many people in mumbai had longed been warning that the kind of daily congestion at the two major suburban train stations where the stampede took place was really a disaster the making those two stations were used by a bulk of mumbai's local commuters we're talking of millions of people here and and that's because a number of offices have sprung up in that area and in the last decade you know many experts in mumbai have long been saying that that foot bridge was too narrow it was too old it was structurally too weak to handle the heavy crush of commuters it's also emerged today that a move by normie even written
4:34 pm
a letter to india's former railways minister last year flagging security issues urging him to carry out her paperwork on that bridge so far authorities seem to have ignored those those concerns the take no visible action to really resolve the problem and this is as a result of seeing a lot of angry commuters today i asking serious questions of the government. and one of those questions is this one is it just this specific bridge generally speaking how prepared is the city to handle the crowds of commuters and heavy rains that are typical in mumbai so you can you hear me. so you found the car can you hear me. ok ladies and gentlemen i think that our correspondent in india unfortunately can't hear us at the moment while we were just
4:35 pm
talking about that massive crush earlier today in mumbai where as we mentioned you know nearly two dozen people have lost their lives today will try and get back to her a little later in the show to see if we can resume that connection but in the meantime we want to tell you that a former german chancellor gerhard schroeder is courting controversy due to his deepening ties with the russian state controlled oil company rosneft schroeder was today appointed to a key position at the company and that's provoked criticism here in germany rosneft is subject to e.u. sanctions imposed on russia for its actions in eastern ukraine but schroeder has called those sanctions unreasonable. the company is expanding its presence in the international market i don't know what good place this is rosneft image film and in the future their expansion will be done under the auspices of gearhart children or the former german chancellor is joining the supervisory board
4:36 pm
of the company. criticism of shooter's plans is strong in germany was next is subject to e.u. sanctions against russia many ask why he is joining a company that is firmly positioned within proteins power base even members of his own party say schwerner is making a mistake in trying to. be a little private citizen i warned him that an ex chancellor can't return to the status of a private citizen i have to live with his decisions and try to leave the place. this isn't the first job the charity has accepted in russia. directly following the end of his term as chancellor he joined north stream pipeline company russian president putin was instrumental in getting him these well paid positions schluter has been close friends with putin for many years. the former german chancellor doesn't see a problem with his commitment to the russian oil giant. and
4:37 pm
i stand by my decision because i think that it is not politically or economically reasonable to isolate our largest neighbor russia politically and economically. rosneft is russia's largest oil producer other international companies such as b.p. and the emirate of qatar also own shares in the company but the majority of stocks belong to the russian state. let's get more on this now i am joined by our correspondent emily sure one who is standing by with the latest from moscow and emily as we've just heard there her trotters appointment to the board of rosneft being criticized here in germany what's the view from russia though given that there's a frosty relation relationship with germany at the moment. well i'm pretty sure the normal russian on the streets probably doesn't care but for us
4:38 pm
now and for the elite in russia the political elite this is a victory after all today the head of. go to section said at the meeting where shorter was appointed that schroeder is a well known quote a well known author or to of european politician and he also said that he's always stood for cooperation between russia and germany and russia germany and europe so they're clearly hoping that schroeder will open doors and that he'll be able to lobby europe to lobby germany against these sanctions after all german russian business relations are really important. the kremlin spokesman. emphasized that after the recent recent german elections he said how important they were again and many german companies here are suffering under those sanctions which schroeder has said that he opposes so. it seems that that people here are hopeful
4:39 pm
at least in the row snuff that maybe shorter can do something about that and that maybe sure there will be the key to better relations with with europe. absolutely and i believe you know another element to this story that we want to turn to is one about the russian opposition you're going to stick around for us to react a little bit to that but first we want to tell you about the russian russian opposition leader alexina volleying says that he has been detained by police after leaving his home in moscow to speak at a pre-election rally in this video posted from the police station of only called upon his supporters to go to a rally which he was planning to address police officers and plain clothed security officials were seen removing a tent at the site of the rally which was due to take place later today. so i mean what was the reason police were giving for this latest attention of an evolving. well police say that not only was arrested for repeating lee calling for an
4:40 pm
authorised rallies including an upcoming one in st petersburg and the one that was scheduled to take place today in the north got it. so he was arrested ahead of that rally and nice enough good also already say that that wasn't authorized and they're actually warning locals in the city not to take part saying that that could be a dangerous that there could be provocations at the rallies but it's been kind of confusing because initially apparently the rally was authorized the violence campaign requested a central location at gorky square right off the central shopping street. and provided a different place for them and then they were refused to let them. to let the rallies take place apparently and apparently now there is a patriotic patriotic marathon supposed to take place on that square. an event called. so it's kind of confusing and we'll see what happens there tonight in the
4:41 pm
city and ultimately emily i mean the big question is what does this mean for the balance of power there and russia and for a potential power grab because we don't know vonnie he made clear his intention to stand in the next presidential elections next march in fact electoral authorities saying that he's ineligible because he is serving a suspended sentence for fraud will he be able to stand for election so how's it looking at the moment. well that's kind of the big mystery i was talking to. leading opposition politician recently who said he just really has no idea even on the upper levels people don't know what will happen and the kremlin is kind of being unpredictable on that front officially he's not allowed to run someone who has a criminal sentence is not allowed to run for political office in russia and he's been intimidated several times this isn't the first time he's been arrested and even attacked but on the other hand he has been allowed to hold several rallies in
4:42 pm
several cities across russia six of them and thousands of people attended so. it's unclear at the moment perhaps will be able to run to legitimize the presidential campaign but it's unclear. sure when our correspondent in moscow with the very latest on the opposition there in russia in addition to of course of reporting earlier about the relationship with germany and the west thank you so much and only. you're watching d.w. news still to come on the program germany's most expensive t.v. show hits screens soon our culture editor is standing by with his verdict on babylon berlin. but in the meantime we don't have our culture editor we have our business editor ben physical and talking a little bit more about high tech something that you might not expect though this is quite interesting the both nations are a bit of
4:43 pm
a surprise for people around the world e.u. leaders are meeting in the story and capital tallinn for talks on europe's digital future it's the first e.u. summit dedicated to digitization and marks holzman reports on one of the smallest member states with the biggest of ambitions. the two youngsters don't know what's wrong they're using the commands their teacher is showing them so far the lego robot just isn't moving. i'm trying to connect everybody to come to the. robotics classes like these are part of school curriculum and the stone they're supposed to give the kids a head start for what's already here the digital age i mean everything is turning digital now so it's it's kind of a good first step towards the art so computers and stuff because as we were all young we like to play word play with lego so this is basically you know playing
4:44 pm
with lego at the same time learning something. good thing that europe needs exactly what these kids are learning. these are the most important internet companies in the world and they will have more and more weight in the future the top ten are all from the u.s. or china none are from europe. tiny a stone you know is trying to change that its capital city tommy might have a medieval face but it's got a digital heart and. this is how it's don't you know worse everybody has a card to access public services online credit history real estate ownership child benefits it's all there declaring taxes takes three minutes on the good company takes twenty thanks to the digital society there's very little red tape. when you don't have to deal with the musician thinks you actually have more time
4:45 pm
for some added value paid by believe it coming from should change and use more technology so they can be more efficient. this way the government also knows more about its citizens to many in europe this idea of an all. home knowing state is a big worry they're concerned here though is that the rest of the e.u. is lagging so far behind when it comes to digital. i think the case is certainly not lost europe but if you see the big numbers the big numbers of who is good who is investing in the latest technologies who is getting the top talent what are the biggest internet companies and by market cap the reason european company top twenty in e-commerce you see a lot of chinese and american companies dominating the market so in that sense i would rate. the stone year at least is trying to stem the tide the future
4:46 pm
top talents are honing their skills. for the country and for these kids. the lego robots are finally moving. and a man on the move on joins us now from tallinn max tell me more about that teacher you interviewed in that piece because i didn't have robotics at school and i couldn't imagine standing up in front of a class of kids trying to explain something that complicated. you didn't have robotics in school well then you're not going to make it i knew you had to become a journalist anyway of course i talk to that teacher afterwards quite some time because he's younger than i am but he had the same kind of youth and he said i couldn't imagine growing up now in this world and sometimes he doesn't understand those kids because he you know his idea of fun back then was running around outside playing with others especially here and estonia where you have
4:47 pm
a lot of possibilities to do that but then again he said you know this is important we have to do this this is not only the future it's the present and with a little luck in this class we have the next the next guy who gets things moving musk of course being the cofounder or the founder of tesla one of the hottest in the how to say who says of electronic cars and that would be interesting. tell me his country has it been forced into this digital future because i mean what does a study have it doesn't really have many resources does it we talked to the president of a stone yesterday got a chance to do that she's a fascinating woman and she said you have to put yourself in our shoes back you know when we came out of the soviet union we gain our independence and we look do we have any oil do we have any gas and we don't and the only thing we have are the brains of the people here and so they pretty early put their eggs into that basket digital society what to do with it so the started revamping their education system
4:48 pm
they started revamping the republic services simplifying the tax system and you must say it has worked this society here is a front runner when it comes to digital society of course the problem is that they're just about the only ones in the european union but that's the reason why somebody seery in tallinn so to give the other leaders the the idea now of what is possible i came across have to leave them for us and tell him thank you very much. that was babylon bar land a clip a new german t.v. series set in berlin in the roaring twenty's got roxboro is here to tell us
4:49 pm
a little more about it scott and we know that the series the most expensive ever made in germany it had the world coming here in berlin last night and of course you always get the tickets to the current events scott how is the party it was great task that i mean they held it in the berlin wall which is a amazing human shield of a building here in matter which is perfect for a serious course because it's set in the one nine hundred twenty s. a lot of people came in costume which was great a lot of women as flappers in the short skirts the. dandies guys dressed up in little tweed suits the really very nice there's a lot of anticipation about the series because the it's been in the works for four years now huge huge budget and there's a huge hype around the series but it really paid off i mean the wait was worth it when the premier finished everyone just jumped to their feet for a huge standing ovation what made it so special what was that magic moment which is why i think i mean i think the star of the series is the setting really i mean
4:50 pm
berlin one nine hundred twenty s. that's an amazing period of time a sort of this period of hedonism and cultural explosion of the period just before the nazis took power and sort of crushed the city in the country and. the producer today was saying this is a series that this is a period where you know people were fighting in the streets in the day and and partying having orgies at night and this usually captures that sort of sense of people dancing on the edge of a volcano we have. from the series to give you an idea of what it's like what we take a look. babylon berlin set in legendary nine hundred twenty s. berlin scene at the time is the most exciting city in the world a mix of art politics emancipation and extremism. there was simply a huge explosion of creativity in art and culture there was so much going on and that is especially in bowling green it was also a world in turmoil and one about to change forever. and to police inspector gary on
4:51 pm
rant played by folco broke the young policeman is sent to berlin to solve a criminal case but things are more complicated than they first same and the line between good and evil gets very blurry forcing right into an existential conflict with your mother for decision for migrating i know this is. it's a huge powder keg and it's a time of contrasts so i do a contrast and i guess there was extreme poverty but also extreme wealth scuppered there were these infamous parties and also politically people didn't know which direction things were heading in this group before she got there were these different political parties that were trying to establish themselves and it was a time of uncertainty but also one of searching that side of the side after. the historical context of babylon berlin was the subject of extensive research babylon berlin also shows how this historical context played out in society women's
4:52 pm
roles were also changing. lives lisa freeze plays inspector rats colleague the determined and tough shot orator. and all the. one fell out. doesn't this is i've been why i wanted a can still identify with women from this time because something is rising up and there is a movement in terms of women that women are also allowed to drive cars and so on so this when it was still in its infancy and. babylon. a gripping story set against a very real and radically changing backdrop. and boy did it cost a lot of money to make ants got right down to thanking us for a yeah it's it cost sixteen episodes two seasons forty five million dollars which isn't game of thrones money ok but it's the most expensive series ever made not in
4:53 pm
english obviously the biggest thing to ever come out of germany but you really do see it on the screen i mean interesting about the series as most period series say downton abbey or whatever they tend to take place inside on a set or if they go outside it's in the countryside somewhere because cheaper to shoot it like that this series takes place a lot of side but it's in the middle of berlin the city berlin one nine hundred twenty s. now that doesn't really exist anymore and most of that nine hundred twenty s. berlin has been destroyed so they had to rebuild it and they built it in studio babbles park they built an entire back lot built three whole berlin neighborhoods so they get the characters to get it to move around and really fascinating in the series that when you when you look at you see these people wandering around the streets if you know berlin it's amazing because you really think well i know that street but hold it where's mcdonald's where's where the cell tower see how it has a real sense of of being in the middle of this city from the one nine hundred
4:54 pm
twenty s. a city that mazing amazing amazing piece of work a city that has so many different identities of course and we have time actually for another clip yeah we're going to look at the i want to mention music plays a huge role in the series the music of the time and we have a clip it's set in a nightclub and it's a huge sort of musical blow a scene from early in the series what we take a look. oh . really cool stuff there so the big question now is i mean you already have to see it when can we all see it scott well if you're in europe you can see quite soon next month or thirteenth it goes out on sky here in germany in the u.k.
4:55 pm
and in italy if you're in the us will have to wait till january netflix has bought it for the u.s. and they're bringing in january scott just briefly what did you like the most about it which is a i think it's just the feel of the city is so great to have a series where you can just dive into a whole other world and this really does that you just get encapsulated in this incredible period it's incredible city with all the different characters and and ideas and politics and and the sex and so forth all in this one amazing package you really get lost in the series which is what i look for in a great t.v. show in the meantime as we wait and for us all to be able to see where can we find out more on the web site of course slash culture we also have a great picture gallery up of about a longer lens you can to get an idea of what the show looks like scott roxboro as always from our culture task thank you so much for telling us a little bit more about this interesting and very expensive serious as you have highlighted babylon berlin coming soon. a quick reminder now the top stories that we have been following for you here thousands of students have rallied in barcelona
