riot police as you can see from the pictures here have clashed with voters at the site where the catalan leader was expected to vote now catalonia which is home to more than seven and a half million people already has a high degree of autonomy but the catalan government has pledged to declare independence from spain within forty eight hours and that if the yes side wins huge crowds of anti referendum demonstrators rallied in barcelona on the eve of this historic vote. the thousands gathered at the heart of the catalan capital really don't want this vote and they don't want this banner which reads more democracy. for anti referendum protesters it's a slogan that embodied the defiance of the catalan separatists. but. a symbol of a breakaway attempt they don't want to happen. for weeks this unauthorized referendum has impassioned and polarized the people of

police because spain at the end of the day has a bit of a sort of a confusing police situation there's essentially three police or four police forces so the situation is that there's long queues of people turning up the polling stations across the region so we're getting in and some aren't. i just to get some context this vote is so controversial can you tell us why it's so contested. well the spanish government in madrid claims that this vote is unconstitutional because it goes against the constitution of spain does not permit a referendum like this and other regional governments several months ago passed a law in their regional parliament which is the legal groundwork and framework for an independent catalan state so what happened was that was passed in their regional parliament and also part of that would have been this is this referendum that was struck down by the constitutional court in spain and see the government of spain as well am

a but the cattle and regional government said well we're going to go ahead with it anyway so to sum up essentially became a standoff and this is where we are now on october the first and so how much has this referendum divided catalonia. well i was here this week and i was doing a report and i noticed people are incredibly divided and that is one thing to bear in mind eighty two percent of catalan people actually want to have a referendum and there are what they want is they want to be able to choose the future of this region and that now most polls put those people in favor of of independence of catalonia out of somewhere around forty to forty five percent which is which is up certain the on say around ten years ago and that has a lot to do with the economic crisis here in spain and also the politics where they feel the politics that the madrid government has followed with regards to how they treat catalonia but i mean like i said the most important thing to remember here is that despite the fact that it is
