certainly they believe that he was not part of a network at the very least radicalized by other people that he was not operating in a vacuum of the word overworked lone wolf or not used so much of a feeling that though this is something that is part of a series of terrorist attacks but to go through and from the deed in other countries correspondent and is a bit would take in paris thank you in spain the catalan regional government says more than four hundred sixty people have been injured in a police crackdown on a banned independence referendum spanish police have closed ninety two polling stations across the region but droid has called the vote a false and is trying to prevent people from costing about. rubber bullets being fired at protesters. clashes between voters and police forces. it was

a chaotic start to catalans band's independence referendum. the central government in madrid deployed police across the region they seized ballot papers and boxes of polling stations and occupied the regional governments telecommunications center. in the town of sharona officers forced their way into a polling station where the catalan leader colace who demands was expected to cast his vote. voted at another location and he sharply condemned the spanish police crackdown. only unjustified and irresponsible use of violence by the spanish state will not stop the will of the catalan people to vote and to freely decide about their future how does he chose. to. come in the mccarthy come in. and indeed many catalans were not deterred by madrid show of force thousands came out to make their vote count polls are due to

close at eight pm local time the catalan government says that if the yes side wins it will declare independence from spain within forty eight hours. while g.w. correspondent for the n.a.s. is in boston and we can talk to him now pablo was the situation in barcelona all people able to call several years. hi how and when i actually i'm standing just from a polling station which you can just see behind me there's a lot of people queuing and they've been there for quite a while i asked people in one month that he'd been there for an hour and a half and expected to be inside to vote about an hour later and now what we know is that plenty of people across the region have voted there are still at least i believe seventy polling stations still open across. this is despite of course the fact that many have been closed early in the morning and then others throughout the morning now of course popular this is a controversial vote tell us briefly why it's so contested it well the spanish
6:06 pm
government in madrid believes that this is an illegal referendum because it goes against the spanish constitution now what happened was that the regional government here possible a few months ago which was essentially laying down the legal framework for a referendum to be held here and then if a yes vote came out of that referendum day would have that a law which would disconnect catalonia from the rest of the country this of course was all stripped down by spain's constitutional course backed by the central government headed by money. so essentially it's been a deadlock a standoff there's been a lack of dialogue both sides are saying that the other is willing to to reach any sort of solution or conclusion and i'm just been a lot of a lot of sort of negative comments being said for to create against money out of his government at the moment of have it been like this and how would you describe the police presence around the polling stations. well i have to say hello from
6:07 pm
a lot of the images that we've seen i mean in some areas you saw a lot of police i mean i was surprised that i've only seen two police officers on the not even on this side of where i'm standing there on the other side of the street they're standing there the regional police and they didn't seem to be really paying much attention to what was going on just about twenty meters away from where they where it looks like the mushrooms in particular have decided to just sort of take a step back that's the regional police of course now we've seen some pretty heavy handed images and some bloody images of that from across the region today and it doesn't look very good for the national police when you've got images like this spread across the planet and of course here in spain is not a criticism as well and i think it's also important to point out that this referendum has divided catalonia but just how much would you say well i was there this week and i was when i was here this week doing reports and it struck me how divided it is i mean people always have their opinion of what was best for
6:08 pm
catalonia but i did notice that people now are very much firm and set on what they believe that is an interesting fact which is that eighty two percent of catalans do want a referendum and now whether they are in favor of it or not as a whole another issue and the latest polls around forty to forty five percent are unsafe or of independents but of course like to be mentioning the way the central government has been treating this whole movement in the past couple of weeks and months hasn't really done them any favors and in fact there's a belief here that they're helping. catalans in fact to become more in favor of that breaking away from the rest of spain so we'll see what happens today we'll see what happens in the next couple of days but it's a very confusing time and i'm there is aren't aren't many any clear answers ready to walk what happened in catalonia but of course you will be monitoring that situation for us and i will be coming back to you throughout the day for now thank you very much. and now some of the other stories making news around the world
