an authorised independence referendum catalan officials say ninety percent of voters backed independence despite police efforts to stall the ballot. well i'm terry martin thanks for joining us we begin in the u.s. where at least two people have been killed in twenty four others wounded after a gunman armed with an automatic weapon opened fire at a concert at the mandalay bay casino in las vegas police say a suspect is down authorities don't believe there are any more shooters a local hospital has said several people are being true to treated for gunshot wounds. let's cross over now to los vegas ransome garcia is a host for the radio station one hundred two point seven and joins us now from l.a.
10:02 am
from las vegas rather tell us reza what's the latest where the latest is that the suspect has been taken down i've been listening to some of the police scanners around here in las vegas and looks like they believe that the suspect they haven't released a name yet but they believe that the suspect was from mrs dietz which is a city that is about forty to fifty miles north of las vegas. we don't know very much else besides that race age anything but i'm hearing that there are some reports out there saying that they believe that the shooter was from the ski and is it clear that he or she was acting alone. metro police here in las vegas believe that this is the only shooter earlier when we spoke earlier believe that they thought that there could have been multiple
10:03 am
shooters but as of right now it looks like they believe that this was. one person acting by themselves yes that's correct ok what about those who have been killed and injured we understand that two people have been killed yes that is correct as well. we don't know the names yet i do know that they're going to be doing a press conference here in just a little bit so we will be learning some more information. about the gunman and also about the victims here in just a little bit it actually looks like. they're going to be starting the press conference here in a few moments ok well we certainly hope to be getting more details then but it we have been told that. more than twenty people have been admitted to hospital some of there in those injuries are are serious. well yeah from what i'm
10:04 am
seeing right now two dead twenty six injured fourteen are now listed as critical injuries you know i've been talking here on my radio station here in las vegas right now it's it's one am normally i'm not on the air here in las vegas but i've been doing live cut ins talking about the situation trying to get people abreast about the situation. and you know talking to some of the listeners who were at the festival there's a there's a listener by the name of devon who actually sent me a video on our facebook wall saying that he believes that the reason him actually being front stage saved his life because there's such a big wall at the front of the stage at this concert it was a country concert here in las vegas the country music festival he did tell me that he. wasn't stopping he did see a couple of victims he was able to he was able to help two of the victims get to u.m.c.
10:05 am
hospital here in las vegas and thankfully he's already at home right now set the scene for us there at that concert venue it was outside i understand it was a country music festival in the evening right next to the hotel and what happened. so this is one of the largest outdoor country music festivals in art on the west coast it's an outdoor festival so open air. usually around this time of the year thousands upon thousands of people come out to this most of them are local but there are plenty of people who come in from california and from around ng states but yeah it's completely open. you know festival you don't think about stuff like this happening and. i mean from what it seems like right now it seems like the shooter was shooting from thirty second floor of the mandalay bay which is a casino that is pretty much right across the street of the festival grounds so
10:06 am
with a high powered philosophy weapon it's just it's just easy picking you're shooting at the side of a barn you know. it's. it's it's incredible like i can't believe that some like this is happening in our city france and thank you so much for talking with us was ransom garcia there a host with the radio station hundred two point seven in los vegas thank you for talking with us thank you very much well on social media we're getting lots of reports of the area around mandalay bay casino being evacuated let's look at some of that footage we got video showing hundreds of people fleeing from the scene we hope those videos are going to begin to play don't seem to have it at the moment but of course as you can imagine here we go.
10:07 am
obviously the sound of what appears to be automatic gunfire could be heard there people are shouting get down to fellow concert goers another video circulating on social media shows people fleeing from the strip we're looking right now at a picture which appears to be a car parked there with lots of police who posted there one user posted no official word from police but scanner traffic indicating that it's a shooter at mandalay bay casino looks empty from as close as i could get now several roads in the area are being shut down a place for telling people to in the area to barricade inside another video posted . with this tweet saying police are blocking a los vegas boulevard at tropicana. and user chase stevens posted this photo people are working to care for a wounded woman she doesn't appear to be leading. are being treated there that it seems at a loss
10:08 am
a vegas metropolitan police department have confirmed that one suspect is down this is an active investigation they're tweeting again please do not head down to the strip at this time the police have issued an appeal for everyone to stay away from the scene well i witnesses on the last vegas trip described a chaotic scene as a gunman opened fire you just heard machine guns and one of the security guards asked us to just stop that we kept shooting and shooting and shooting and we thought it was on the other side we just thought it was maybe play machine guns but it definitely wasn't our fire guns. and it sounded like at least thirty rounds or more i witnessed there describing the moment that someone opened fire on that concert in las vegas now police in los vegas have now confirmed that one suspect is down that's all they're saying they're just using the term down we don't know exactly what that means they're also asking people to stay away from the area let's
10:09 am
listen in. here that are coming down wanting to help police steer clear the area we have all the resources from washington much more weeks department as well as our partner agencies coming down to bear on the situation so please stay away from the area and we have had reports of people coming down trying to help you got that do we have numerous victims right now i don't have a number for you how are their families in damage in your thoughts as we work our way through this problem once i have more information to come back come back with that information this time that as of now i can't confirm as we do have one suspect down. a spokesman for the last vegas police department there commenting on that shooting course we'll bring you more details on that story as they become available now turning to other news cattle out authorities say ninety percent of those who managed to vote in a band referendum on sunday said yes to independence from spain that day after
10:10 am
chaos after a day of chaos and violence in the region left over eight hundred people injured the vote went ahead despite efforts by the spanish government to shut it down catalonia is part of spain's north east region of seven and a half million people who have their own language and culture but it's not recognized as a separate nation under the spanish constitution after the mayhem on sunday and the forced closings of numbers polling sites catalonian trade unions have now called for a general strike tomorrow. independence supporters celebrate this as their victory preliminary results are out they show an overwhelming win for an independent catalonia held according to the u. . two million twenty thousand one hundred forty four votes are in favor of the yes. wouldn't that what they got up was in but it means ninety percent of the
10:11 am
voters are in favor of independence. of the over two million catalans have managed to cast their ballot on sunday with or to say only seven point eight percent voted no to independence people across the region are cheering but spain remains firm in rejecting the referendum as in constitutional and legal. spanish prime minister mariano rajoy denied it even happened or you know we don't. there was no self-determination referendum in catalonia. today the spanish people saw that the rule of law in spain is strong and valid and that it answers those who try to attack it and it acts within the boundaries of the law against any provocation. and the people they provoke a few but the prime minister came under criticism as images like these began circulating on sunday tensions escalated as police try to prevent catalans from
10:12 am
casting ballots the authorities smashed their way into polling stations to seize ballot boxes later catalonian authorities declared independence is at hand. but i thought we listen to have hope and suffering cuts alone as citizens have earned the right to have an independent state in the form of a republic. hence my government in the next few days will send the results of today's vote to the catalan parliament where the sovereignty of our people lies so that it can act in accordance with the law of the referendum. all you've got afforded them. catalan independence supporters celebrate a vote that has no official meaning in the rest of spain. has problems joins us now from barcelona the capital of the catalonia region we
10:13 am
also have journalist martin roberts with us in spain's capital madrid good morning to you both gentlemen pablo sunday was obviously an emotional and chaotic day in catalonia how are things looking there this morning. well i'd say it's early in the morning remember and things got started a little bit later in spain and other countries in europe but it's certainly a feeling of shock surprise and excitement depending on what side of the independence referendum you're on i think the statement last night from catalyst pushed him on certainly shocked a lot of people who he didn't really expect his words to be so powerful after seeing the number of people really who voted because there is something that needs to be buried you really need to bear in mind of the number who voted it represents more or less around thirty seven percent of the total electorate of cotton yeah so a lot of people on the other side who are against in that and then steal that well with thirty seven percent and as to potential that independents could be declared
10:14 am
suppose there's a feeling of shock and fear of where this could be going and where it could be leading this week the public the organizers of the referendum the those who are who are advocating independence they're saying that a large majority of catalans voted for independence that there was basically a quorum there that this is a ballad reason to go for for complete to declare independence from spain is that generally accepted among the people in catalonia. i think once again terry it's a bit late what i was saying to there that i mean it really depends on what side of this argument you're on i mean there's one thing to bear in mind eighty percent more than eighty percent of catalan people want an independence referendum but a legally binding referendum not not this referendum that we've seen this weekend which at the end of the day is unconstitutional and was illegal under the eyes of the spanish law of spanish law and the spanish government and even
10:15 am
a lot of people here in cairo and it didn't turn out to vote and we've seen that we've seen that with the number of people who actually went to vote now bearing in mind a lot of the schools and so on were closed with that with force by the police which didn't do any favors to the spanish central government it's still a very odd situation in that you don't really have a in some people's eyes it's not legal and other people's eyes it is legal so now how is the spanish government going to proceed and how is the catalan regional government going to proceed so it's a very confusing situation and to be honest with you extremely worrying well let's get the view from madrid martin robertson standing by for us there martin we heard spanish prime and the spanish prime minister say the referendum had been blocked does mariano rajoy believe spain's strategy for dealing with the referendum was successful. well that's certainly what he said last night. on the other hand we have to remember as he spoke before the president said he was going
10:16 am
to independence already a lot of us have expected since do not permit that day that. you know which is was you know just i'm some last week the next move is that he's. cold for a special session of parliament today and he's coached the multi party support he just hasn't said exactly what the next move is going to be so again like public service a lot of uncertainty at the moment well a lot of uncertainty clearly but the spanish government has to deal with this issue in insaan way are there any prospects for negotiations or reconciliation something that would satisfy both sides. there was no suggestion of us in last night's speech . and again it seems a very very strategy which really has been pursuing for the last five years which is just to insist that more is the law the law needs to be enforced i mean about the only dilema he said was that there was always playing to it was always remove
10:17 am
the negotiation within the bounds of the law. so that with the appearance rules and . you know any negotiation or any acceptance that yes those photos in any way validate the route of the man i just regard the rebel situation. they provide for the truth taking over the direct rule of counselor near dissolving the casablanca was a game i think a lot of people and have to learn you would see that as being very very highly provocative. back to you in barcelona pablo after the clashes yesterday between the police and people trying to vote in that referendum there was a lot of friction there must be even more tension what can we expect on the streets of barcelona and elsewhere in catalonia in the days ahead. well there's been a call for a general strike and out of the unions here it is going to be a lot of protest today it'll be also there's also going to be
10:18 am
a meeting at ten thirty am with catalyst pushed them all and the rest of his regional governments and they're going to be discussing and what's happened over the weekend on how to proceed so it's going to be an interesting time today i think a lot of people are waking up and in a state of that shock. after what we've heard from from the regional government we also have to wait and see what happens from madrid and depending on what comes from madrid then people will will decide well they're going to react to that so once again and we've said this throughout it's a very odd situation it's very confusing and people really don't know what's going on pablo thank you so much and martin to us in madrid thank you that's probably only earliest therefore if you can barcelona and martin roberts in madrid. now a murder mystery that stunned the world on feb thirteenth kim jong nom the strange half brother of north korean leader kim jong il was killed in the middle of kuala

10:23 am
a different kind when you look at catalonia and the euro catalonia yes people are a little worried but not overly so that's a little bit surprising because usually when you have scenes like this in a big country like spain perhaps having trouble than the markets in the past have reacted more more sharply than this but all political risks that at the moment seem to be on the backburner and people are looking at the positive side of the euro going down now it's not going down by a huge margin but people are saying it's going in the right direction and why is that positive for equities because it makes products that euro zone companies all those acts borders for example here in germany but also in many other countries cheaper for customers outside the euro zone more profits likely as well. only should investors be more worried about instability and that. they probably should because when you look at it closer inspection there are some

big issues there there's the issue of independence movements in other countries maybe getting some uplift from that from that catalonian population which pushed through with all that all its might its right to vote on such an issue even though the central government in madrid said no you can't do that and holger schmieding. he's the chief economist for baron back bank he's based in london he says that also for example it could make it difficult for roy the prime minister of russia as minority government to push through important legislation like budgets and spain is still one of the biggest countries in the euro zone so maybe these questions will come to the fore later on but at the moment the markets are just void by some record chasing incidentally going on in frankfurt here as well and that wall street . in frankfurt thank you. russian telecoms company trans telecom has installed a new internet connection for north korea that's according to
