2:01 pm
say they have shot dead the suspect a sixty four year old man from nevada. and we'll get the latest from spain after a chaotic day in catalonia plunge the country into crisis the catalan regional government is meeting right now to consider what steps towards independence can take that's after ninety percent of voters back to separating from spain and a referendum disrupted by police and dismissed by madrid. i'm sumi so misconduct good to have you with us a gunman has killed at least fifty people injured two hundred more in the u.s. city of las vegas police have confirmed that the suspect a sixty four year old white man from nevada was shot dead the incident took place on the city's famed strip of the attack. her had checked in as
2:02 pm
a guest at the mandalay bay hotel and casino and from the thirty second floor he began firing on an outdoor concert authorities say they have also located a female person of interest she was a seen accompanying the suspect before the attack. last vegas sheriff joe long bardot spoke a short while ago let's listen in for his his history and background we haven't completed that part of the investigation yet but we located numerous firearms within the room that he occupied and that's like i stated earlier it's going to be of long and tedious investigation now we're bringing in all the resources of the f.b.i. to assist us in this investigation in particular to their victim witness advocates and their c.s.i. folks to help us process the scene and ensure that we are getting all the evidence that we can possibly taint. well there was
2:03 pm
a las vegas sheriff joe long bardot speaking there earlier now authorities they have named a sixty four year old stephen paddick as the shooter he is thought to have killed at least fifty people making it the worst mass shooting in u.s. history let's take a look now at what happened. the moment when music tends into alarming noises. and people begin to run for their lives. as hysteria breaks out in the concert venue gunshots continue. some say it lasted for five minutes some say even more an eyewitness who spoke to describe the horror. the artist was up on stage playing obviously and we heard sounded like firecrackers the first the artists kept singing firecrackers that coming in that is just stopped and then people started panicking i mean it was just damage i mean people got down cops
2:04 pm
reality. the shooting took place at an open air country music festival in near the mandalay bay hotel and casino located on less vegas famous trip police officers confronted a suspect on the thirty second floor of the resorts hotel where he was shot dead. we are comfortable that the primary aggressor in this event is has expired or passed away and is no longer a threat there's been multiple multiple phone calls and accusations or conjecture coming through social media that there is multiple shooters and other result resorts that has been proven to be false well sources have named local men stephen tuttle contest the attack and have located the view cooper coming to the suspect.
2:05 pm
did abuse a us correspondent custom phenomenas the tracking the latest developments for us and joins us on the line high cost than what is the latest that you've been hearing a from authorities. what some good news in all that horror the just. one of the police officer wounded in the shootout with the attacker is now out of surgery and in stable condition the other officer who was wounded was on the lightly wounded so some good news there but all of that of course against the background of this very sad situation according to the police as we've just heard they're still estimating that least fifty people have been killed and more than two hundred wounded and carson we mentioned that they said that the sixty four year old man a local from nevada was the was the shooter and that they gunned him down and the aftermath there any indication of what his motive might have been. not yet really
2:06 pm
and of course this is just in the investigation so we'll have to wait for a few moments to find out more so we don't know but of course the first reactions were is this a terrorist attack what is behind this and that at least doesn't seem to be the case at least not in islam is terrorist attack as some people feared at the beginning. question what about the victims as you said at least fifty people dead more than two hundred injured what do we know about them at this point. one of those were people who were there open three day concerts festivals an open air concert these people were there to listen to country music to have a good time and then of course in the mass of people thousands of people there they were easy targets for the shooter and they were basically picked up by him and he was just trying to apparently kill as many people as possible because this is
2:07 pm
appears to be the worst mass shooting in u.s. modern history what kind of reactions have you been seeing and hearing there. white house spokeswoman sarah huckabee sanders just a few minutes ago the president donald trump had been briefed on the quotes who referred tragedy in the vegas unquote and that if you was monitoring the situation closely the president self also within the last hour tweeted about the event saying that my warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible loss vegas shooting god bless you so this is the first reaction from the united states president right in carson. you know this is a considered las vegas this was a considered as you said an open air concert was there any indication of how well police and emergency services are reacted to this as this was unfolding.
2:08 pm
was broglie will need a few more days to find out whether things could have done in a better way to some extent but it's very difficult if you have such a big crowd of people there and you have a shooter was apparently knew what he was doing and knew how to handle his gun and shooting there from the thirty second floor of a high rise building it's very difficult to do something because these automatic rifles can shoot hundreds of rounds within a minute and of course police have to find out where is the shooter how to get there is hardly possible to avoid those casualties if someone is determined to kill innocent people and apparently the police took out the gun then so i have i'm not in a position ready to judge whether things could have done any better but it's very difficult to react quickly on a situation like this. is the u.s. correspondent cutting funding and then keeping an eye on this story for us thank
2:09 pm
you very much. we will be tracking the latest developments as well and bring those updates to you as they come in to us on that story for now though are turning to other news and spain is facing a constitutional crisis after a day of chaos in catalonia the regional government there is meeting to discuss taking steps towards independence that's after ninety percent of voters back to breaking away from spain in a referendum but the vote was disrupted by police and dismissed by madrid leaving catalonia and spain itself in disarray. independence supporters celebrate this as their victory preliminary results are out they show an overwhelming win for an independent catalonia. girls two million twenty thousand one hundred forty four votes are in favor of the yes.
2:10 pm
but this means ninety percent of the voters are in favor of independence. of the over two million catalans who managed to cast their ballots on sunday with or to say only seven point eight percent voted no to independence people across the region are tearing but spain remains firm in rejecting the referendum as unconstitutional and illegal. spanish prime minister mariano rajoy denied it even happened or you know we don't really it was no self-determination referendum in catalonia. today the spanish people saw that the rule of law in spain is strong and valid and that it answers those who try to attack it and it acts within the boundaries of the law against any provocation. and the people they provoke a few. but the prime minister came under criticism as images like these began circulating on sunday tensions escalated as police tried to prevent catalans from
2:11 pm
casting ballots the authorities smashed their way into polling stations to seize ballot boxes later catalonian authorities declared independence is at hand. but i fear we don't listen to a of hope and suffering cuts alone as citizens have earned the right to have an independent state in the form of a republic hence my government in the next few days will send the results of today's vote to the catalan parliament where the sovereignty of our people lies so that it can action accordance with the law of the referendum. do you know. all you got afforded them catalan independence supporters celebrate a vote that has no official meaning in the rest of spain. let's go right to barcelona were journalist stephen bergen is standing by for us hi stephen
2:12 pm
a catalog president we saw in a report he gave a statement just a little while ago saying he does not plan abrupt split with spain but is calling for a new understanding what does that mean that he plans to go ahead with this independence . over there's no doubt that he plans to but i think to surprise quite a few people that he has pulled back from the brink and hasn't just simply declared independence on the basis of yesterday's poll. but he i mean he's a dyed in the wool independent eastern there's no doubt that he's not going to change his mind but he is he's calling for mediation he'd like this to be i think from the european union but it's very disappointed at the european union's brotherhood bland reaction to what's happened and he says be you can't look away. and they have to they have to come to terms with this. but he doesn't want any traumatic bird because the fact is all the ninety percent of people who voted
2:13 pm
yesterday voted in favor. it is a well known fact that they represent roughly fifty percent of the population that's fifty percent of the population were independents and the other half don't and i think you know he and others realize that pushing this through against the will of people who frankly didn't vote was a book because they know it wasn't a legally binding referendum that isn't going to work so time for mediation to begin but this requires a very different attitude from the spanish government which behaved actually just walked straight into a truck by being using force yesterday which simply reinforced people's sense that they don't want to belong to spain and stephen after those that force that you mentioned yesterday we saw these dramatic scenes of violence you know how people there been reacting today in barcelona what is the atmosphere like. there is at the
2:14 pm
moment there's a very large demonstration going on there was a ten minute everything stopped for ten minutes in protest but now there's various marches going on and tomorrow there's a general strike is called just a day. ok stephen as you said you know this is a very difficult situation and neither side here really backing down what options does the government in madrid really have right now. it has the option to recognize the reality that this is not going to go over it and that by simply using force or in fact telling. us as reported yesterday say there wasn't a referendum. isn't going to work and if they had they haven't got the political will or intelligence to mediation this they'll have to find someone who does because it's not about to go very far as stephen as you've been speaking we've been
2:15 pm
looking at some live pictures there from barcelona stephen reporting from barcelona for a sternal stephen bergen thank you very much for that insight. and the reactions to this independence referendum in catalonia have been coming in from across europe let's go to that these barber bases she's keeping an eye on those in brussels for us about a tell us more about how the e.u. has been reacting today. the e.u. has finally reacted and put out a statement that said reiterated words said before this or a friend of mine was illegal and the whole affair is an internal matter for the spanish government which is a legal legally and politically right within the european union's rules it also reminded that the cut alone in government that if it pressed on was independence it would automatically fall out of the e.u. and not be a member any more and more or less not be readmitted but also it said that violence
2:16 pm
can never be an instrument of political debate or political action and sort of more or less appeal to the two sides to deescalate now and to start a dialogue so it was s'posed it's sort of reiterated the legal position offer all sorts that it does have to take it can't really go away from that way and on this at the same time showed that it was quite dismayed by the pictures it saw from bus lonia city we didn't hear any reactions or any comments rather from e.u. officials ahead of this referendum why have they chosen to make a statement now. because of course they see the political reality that they see and they were dismayed in advance i mean this was a train crash waiting to happen and it was seen in brussels everybody knew this and was wringing their hands and thinking you know why is. it so hard headed why doesn't he try to talk why doesn't he try different political measures but just sort of try to push this through by the police which is the worst thing you can do
2:17 pm
under the circumstances brussels knows that and so they didn't want this but could not prevent it and now they have to try to make the best out of a really bad situation because of chorus of voices here in brussels from the spanish journalists and members of parliament come and say why don't you intervene now the answer to that is the european union cannot do that it's simply not its remit and barbara as you've been speaking i just to let our viewers know we have been looking here at live pictures there coming in from barcelona where people have been gathering there and protests as you said this really doesn't leave the e.u. in the in an easy spot here you know the journalist we spoke to earlier in barcelona saying that the catalonian government disappointed by what he called a bland reaction from the e.u. how much support is there for the catalonia government's position here. there is no support whatsoever of course not because we've seen this before in europe we've had
2:18 pm
those secessionist movements we've had it we've had it invest we've had it in corsica we've had it north of italy the last thing the european union wants and needs is a flare up of this now but if we think about identity politics these days and about populism rising of course this is something that sort of flows out of those movements and it could be that european union if that this would carry on on would double its member states within the next ten years and that is something that is legally and of course politically not wanted and not possible prevail with the very latest from brussels thank you barbara. all of the referendum and violence in catalonia have also shined a light on the region's wealth as well care how it is here with more on that is not never always about politics always about money as well and economically catalonia spain's most important region after sunday's brutal scenes support for spanish prime minister mariano rajoy his government is crumbling and worries about spain's
2:19 pm
fragile economy are rising. on the madrid stock exchange share prices continue to slide more than one hundred points shared since the market opened a fall of more than one percent many traders fear that uncertainty about the fate of catalonia will lead to further falls in this climate investors buying spanish government bonds may want higher interest the country near has to pay almost one point seven percent interest on ten year bonds the highest in many months the common european currency also fell slightly if the euro's fallen below one point one eight u.s. dollars losing nearly a cent and get out of the we've just overcome the euro crisis so calls for independence are certainly not going over well with the e.u. has a big task ahead of it it will have to mediate but it's clear there were ninety percent of the people want freedom that cannot simply be ignored. if catalonia gained independence spain would lose its industrial heartland the region accounts for
2:20 pm
a fifth of the country's economic power see it cars are produced here the region is also important in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors without catalonia spain would slip to fifteenth place in the world ranking of the strongest economic countries that would put it behind mexico so how damaging is this unrest for spain's economy let's bring in ali bartz without catalonia spain would slip in the ranking of the world's economies place fifteen how worried are investors about this. i think if that indeed were happening if there was any indication that spain would be moving towards that situation and indeed europe with that then the mood here would be a totally different one but at the moment yes people are worried but i don't think anybody believes that it will come to that that catalonia will leave spain because
2:21 pm
of course someone has to tell the catalonians that if they do leave they would not be in the e.u. and of course it would also be very very bad for spain surrounding it and for all concerned so people are not concerned for the moment because the share of share prices are reacting relatively moderately we just heard one percent down the spanish market not much considering the turmoil that one sees in the pictures coming from catalonia but it's not a major major major slide in economists say it will maybe for the moment cause a dent in sentiment in spain maybe dent economic growth but it three point two percent on the year last recorded spain had to record very strong growth anyway so perhaps that's a reason why people are relatively relaxed at the moment but what comes markets today briefly if you can. that's the thing that's driving the markets here
2:22 pm
is confidence economically overall political risks are taking a back seat wall street saw record highs in major indices the euro is going down on spain incidentally and that's good for the export shares and there's great manufacturing data manufacturing sector news coming in from the eurozone for example super high growth and high growth for germany as well good labor market situation that's what people are looking on only about in frankfurt thank you. major reconciliation in the middle east is unfolding today that's right kara thank you of the palestinian prime minister rami one dollah is on a rare visit to the gaza strip and as god said this is part of a big reconciliation between longstanding rivals fatah and hamas visit comes a week after hamas just banded its administration and gaza making way for a unity government that himself would lead palestinians in gaza and the west bank have been ruled separately since
2:23 pm
a conflict between the rival political factions erupted in two thousand and seven. and didn't use ten year cramer is that the heiress a border point in gaza tanya you have been talking to people living in gaza what are they hoping to see come out of this visit. well there was a very tearful crowd at the palestinian side here when standing of the crossing when the convoy passed through here some time ago and what people are saying here is like they're kind of course asli optimistic because they're saying this time it really has to go through and they're really hoping that this consultation this time we work out but of course they're also concerned that it might fail again because they have seen many attempts and also agreements in the past decade in the past ten years that have failed you know people here want to see something positive coming out of this visit but also of the whole process because people are aware that this is not going to be done in one or two days of a visit this is going to be
2:24 pm
a very long process yet and yet there have been previous attempts at reconciliation that have failed what about the timing of this now. well i mean people are saying you know this the timing here for them is quite right because gaza is in a very very difficult situation and what they want to see i mean what they are saying here is the government that came here from ramallah they should start working now on all the issues you know the issues that are really of concern to them for example electricity their way mennes. electricity cuts over the summer because the palestinian authority wanted to make pressure on hamas you know two years to dismantle of the so called minister to call me to that was ruling gaza now they come together and they're saying we need to you know really start working on this and that is why people are saying you know they need to take steps immediately
2:25 pm
to make this difficult situation here better and tiny just briefly if you can on a political level what can we expect what kind of outcome are these rivalries over . whether by valerius are not over and this is what people are most concerned about they want to see in the coming days no tomorrow there's a cabinet session schedules and then they have to talk you know about all these thorny issues that have been there for the past decade that includes for example security or what is happening with hamas militant wing the gates and all the other issues and this is what people will be looking at you know what kind of concessions they will make to each other and what kind of timetable do we expect here to see if this is a serious attempt this time. or at the border point in gaza tanya thank you very much. let's take a look at some other stories making news around the world the two women accused of murdering the estranged
