10:08 pm
we when we heard the gunshots it sounded like as iran's like said it by works or something like that so we didn't react to the first round second round by then we were looking around and it was someone i could see getting c.p.r. it was lying flat. and i could see just no danger leave the stage so death was when i looked to my wife and my friends and just sort of worked out what we were going to do they were crouched down so they ended up opening up a area underneath the. city area for the ip and we basically ran under there and he down i was lying on my wife. making sure everything was ok just scuse me and then. once it popped on a pos we listened to the shooting listen we listened and eventually just stopped and that's when we photos pretty safe to come out so i crawled out underneath looking around to see what you come out we were able to come out there was
10:09 pm
a security guy there and sort of pushing everyone to run just as fast as you can get out get out so i went back got a friend's wheel came out and we ran to the exit but we had to run across the whole deal with the shooting and take them places and i just you know did our guns don't look don't look as it was there was bodies being carried on makeshift stretchers which was then seen whatever they could find it was a lot of bodies a lot of blood lot of bad stuff and i decide to keep running so we ran to the exit and they were police hidden behind columns there they were still tucked away so as to get his impression that something could still happen any time so we just get running and got as far as we could away from the house started heading down the strip and someone came running out from another scene a sign there's not the shooting somewhere else which turned out to be false but i was saying that someone in new york you know keep moving so we just kept going anyway we could cite from studying the law. yeah it was just surreal it was amazing . and breton i mean we can just imagine how how
10:10 pm
harrowing that must have been for you the scenes that you were describing there for you to have lived through that and we know that this is this is not the first time that you have been to this festival we mentioned this is the fourth year in a row presumably of the last time that your experiences were far more joyful than this particular one when you look around at this area perhaps you can explain to us a little bit more do you know why this attacker might have chosen this specific target. it was a is it i mean fortunately it's a great chance of that sort of thing to happen that the thirty second floor is a great you down out of the area on and off stage it on the strip so the concert not myself and you go up in the room and look down and that's a great view of the whole rainer and you know it just you get a great there's a lot of view of the whole thing so unfortunately when there's bad people in the
10:11 pm
world like sex season take an opportunity to do what they do it's unfortunately a good spot for a bad thing to happen which is terrible brenton what are you going to do now i mean we know that so many people there have been through this experience as you have i think more than twenty thousand people were actually at this concert have you been offered any any sort of counseling or have the authorities been in touch with you. no nothing like that yet. and i was just taken the day my wife and i and left friends with basically bad now slate miners we came on this ng and it was hard the kids. were just going to die just watching t.v. and just just counting our lucky stars just that we had i did ask that got out no problem there was another lady under the area that we were in and we took her in we bought her i'm with us until she could find her friends and get back to them
10:12 pm
a boyfriend drives from california that nine picked her out later on the morning. just which. i don't. i mean i was at a men's of another convention tomorrow and next weekend i mean it she doesn't want to go there she's really against big groups now we've got season tickets to the hockey the gold knots and we're sitting on the fence with that now two are just. things of chinese when you look at big venues with. you know it's different absolutely i think a lot of us will be thinking along similar lines in the future we thank you very much for for joining us after experiencing something so traumatic in the past day just for for giving us a little bit of perspective on what it is that you went through brant and when a guard. you know we mentioned that you've attended this concert many times in the past and we thank you very much for telling us a little bit more about it you're welcome let's turn to some other

news now because catalonia is regional government is calling for international mediation on its bid for independence from spain this after a disputed referendum on sunday was marred by violence as police tried to prevent voters from casting ballots regional leaders say that ninety percent voted for independence but critics say that the result is not representative because opponents refused to participate and trade has dismissed the referendum as a legal and invalid. supporters of catalan separatism but i to enforce again today providing a powerful backdrop to the demands of their regional leader. but despite the media's defiance in barcelona he opened the door to deescalation. a woman can show you more of your she'll want to know recommending is mediation. and that mediation requires the presence of a third party. other think that on this you're not going to see that party needs to
10:14 pm
be international for this to be an effective process this is important to restore the institutional normality which has been disturbed by disproportionate decisions from spain central government sunday's violence was splashed across the morning papers as people caught up with events that could change the makeup of that country some catalans were outraged by police tactics while others expressed reservations about leaving spain your. home of the opinion that this referendum wasn't managed the way it should have been there may have been other ways so that we all would be happier with the results part of us catalans i believe and not happy with the result of the referendum. so you know just. yesterday was terrible people like me i'm seventy years old i experienced the dictatorship under franco and this is the same. syrian army a lot. as pro independence protests continue international concern
10:15 pm
has been mounting european council president donald tusk tweeted that he had spoken to spanish prime minister mariano rajoy and appealed to him to avoid escalation. roy layton met with spain's main opposition leader to emergency talks and spain faces its biggest constitutional crisis in decades there are fears of prolonged instability and massed. the cats and on parliament is expected to find plenty to this week on whether to make a declaration of independence and the crisis it could be set to take place even further. and correspondent funny char is following it all she joins us now from the cattle on top it all barcelona funny today we saw of course protests against sunday's violence we just saw some of the images there what more can you tell us about the situation now.
10:16 pm
right now as you can probably see behind me there are only a few people a few locals a few tourists who are coming here to one of the main squares in barcelona a plastic at the lumia or a square of catalonia it was a much different picture of course during the day as we have just seen in the report this square as well as. one of the main boulevards here in barcelona was packed with people many thousands of people fifteen thousand only in barcelona alone but many thousands across a catalonia came gathered to basically say they are protesting silently but that silent protest quickly turned loud as a lot of young people especially where chanting i have voted i've cast my ballot and i want to make sure that my voice is heard that i want to have an independent catalonia a lot of people are upset because they say the way the police has handled the situation yesterday was a very foolish repression basically suppressing of the democratic rights of every
10:17 pm
catalonia citizen the critics say and that is to cast your ballot and of course there's a different picture if you ask the government in madrid. absolutely a different picture that they have certainly been vocal about over the past week and and funny you know you have been actually looking into similar movements like this in a series all this year it's been called new nationalism you've been traveling the world looking at various different countries how does the this independence the separatist movement there in barcelona compare to what you found elsewhere i've been traveling the world asking myself what is pushing people feeling inclined to vote for politicians or be part of movements who support a very strong national identity if i compare what's going on here right now in catalonia in other parts of the world where i've been i see some similarities with
10:18 pm
scotland so there are also people who are very much inclined to vote for a local regional government that supports independence supports self-determination from the u.k. whatever the difference really is in scotland people their legacy ation with the united kingdom that scotland is part of so the referendum was held in legal terms while as here it is really an aggressive form of civic nationalism civic because these people are not nationalists because they for example don't want refugees in their countries in their country for example like in frogs but it's aggressive when it comes to the way the way this referendum was executed because there was no nikah spain to the main government in madrid that catalonia is part of the that was very unfunny for char with the latest from catalonia thank you. and the violence during a yesterday's referendum that has really spooked investors let's bring in christopher koger because first off the markets they never really like uncertainty they don't
10:19 pm
sara and indeed stocks retreated and spanish borrowing costs went up as investors were trying to evaluate the political consequences of the catalonia independence vote but after sunday's brutal scenes confidence and prime minister mariano government has taken a hit and worries about europe's fifth largest economy are growing. before the close of monday's session on the madrid stock exchange the country's benchmark index had dropped as much as one point six percent wiping out gains made over the previous week many traders fear that uncertainty over the fate of catalonia will lead to further declines in this climate vestas buying spanish government bonds may want higher yields which are one point seven percent on ten year bonds the highest in many months the common european currency also fell slightly the euro has fallen below one dollar eighteen cents losing nearly
10:20 pm
a cent. from god we've just overcome the euro crisis so calls for independence are certainly not going over well with the e.u. has a big task ahead of it it will have to mediate but it's clear there were ninety percent of the people want freedom that cannot simply be ignored. if catalonia gained independence or spain would lose its industrial heartland the region accounts for a fifth of the country's economic power say at cars are produced here the region is also important in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors without catalonia spain would slip to fifteenth place in the world ranking of the strongest economic countries behind mexico spain has been on a successful path to recovery following its debt crisis a few years ago but catalonian independence would not explain of course. british authorities call it the biggest ever peacetime repatriation more than one hundred thousand travelers are looking for a way to return home after britain's monarch airlines collapsed on monday this is
10:21 pm
already said at least thirty aircraft to transport customers scattered around holiday destinations ranging from turkey to spain and sweden citing intense competition and weaker pound monarch is the third european airline making a financial crash landing this year. it was a familiar sight at british airports for fifty years but that changed overnight the demise of monarch airlines was announced in an early morning online message from britain's civil aviation north or eighty passengers were left without a flight home most of them stranded at destinations in the mediterranean the government is vowing to bring them home in what it calls the country's biggest ever peacetime repatriation we expect to the vast vast majority of the hundred ten thousand monarch passengers who are currently on holiday with monarch to come back to within the next two weeks that that's exactly what is expected. britain's fifth
10:22 pm
biggest airline had struggled with losses but had hoped to turn things around with orders for boeing's latest seven three seven planes and a cost cutting program bankruptcy rumors swirled last year but then monarch was able to draw a new line of credit but now that's gone and so is the airline with a decision really was otoh for continued losses loss has been sustained for quite some time forecast to continue mainly as a result of places in the market overcapacity in the short haul market is meant pace have been depressed for some time in britain's transport minister says other airlines have plans to quickly hire monarch staff but that's little consolation for the three hundred thousand people who held tickets to fly on monarch they won't be going anywhere. it was a solid start to monday's trading session on wall street the new york stock exchange observed a moment of silence for the victims of sunday night's las vegas shooting shortly
10:23 pm
after the exchange did open for business for more let's cross over to our markets man scored against i want to stay on the topic of the las vegas shooting with all the grief and horror that this is incident has sparked why is it that stocks of the arms industry are gaining on monday well we've seen this disturbing reaction before after every mass shooting here in the u.s. the call for tighter gun regulations get louder and then usually sales for guns here in the united states pick up we have seen it also after the presidential election in november it was pretty unlikely that the new administration would put tighter gun control out and that's why they share prices of the gun makers actually felt so now that we have more calls for tighter gun read through the regulation the industry expects more sales and the stocks increase quite
10:24 pm
a bit if anything really will change this time and remains to be seen and overall by the way it was another record day here on wall street the s. and p. five hundred set the forty years record close so far this year and yes general motors is putting a big bet on electric mobility tell us more. well it's really interesting to see i mean german car makers and also politicians seem to be a bit hesitant to really call it all electric vehicles but now general motors announced that they will bring out two any new all electric models was in the next six years the first two in your cars are supposed to roll out in the next eighteen months so obviously general electric believes that the future for the car industry will be electric and we saw quite a reaction here on wall street the stock of general motors up by a good four per cent and general motors already is having an electric vehicle out
10:25 pm
the chevy volt that is not selling very well this time around but obviously g.m. sees the future in electric vehicles and scored in new york thank you and that's all your business for the moment and the nobel prize for medicine is out sara has more on that you're going to talk a little bit about sleep actually christophe because why do we feel alert during the day sleeping at night well apparently it is all down to your body's inner clock your circadian rhythms and it turns out that our circadian rhythms are crucial to our well being so much so that the men who discovered the importance of the body's natural rhythms have been awarded the nobel prize for medicine they are american scientists jeffrey hall michael rose bash and michael young who will share the award the nobel committee said that they helped discover how disrupting your sleep for them can have a major impact on your behavior and your body function. so why is their work so
