catalonia calls for international mediation in its bid for independence from spain as pressure mounts on madrid to resolve the spiraling crisis today catalans are set to strike in protest of police violence during sunday's referendum. and as marriage equality takes effect in germany many same sex couples want to start families to be made to pair hoping they'll become parents soon under new laws allowing all the dolphin rights. hello i'm terry martin thanks for joining us. gunned down while enjoying their favorite music fifty nine people dead and hundreds injured in a horrific attack on a country music festival in los vegas the man who murdered them opened fire from inside the high rise mandalay bay hotel spraying bullets hundreds of bullets into
9:02 am
the crowd of concert goers on the other side of the los vegas strip then he took his own life the shooting has renewed the debate over gun control in the u.s. in las vegas locals and survivors are rallying together in shock a normally colorful and vibrant city grieving and stunned mourners gather on the iconic less vegas strip where the attack happened to comfort each other. there's line up to donate blood for do when did in hospital. this was the moment when music turned to gunfire the crowd had been enjoying a country music festival suddenly they were running for their lives. as kind of broke out the shooter continued his rampage. i looked at my wife and my friends and just sort of worked out what we were going
9:03 am
to do they were crouched down so they ended up opening up a area underneath the that city area so they and we basically ran under there and it down i was lying on my wife. making sure everything was ok just so. many and then. once it popped on it passed we listened to the shooting list and we listened and eventually just stopped. police rushed to the scene of the attack at the mandalay bay hotel and casino where the perpetrator had checked in as a guest. from the thirty second floor he began shooting at concert goers below. police later found him dead in his room they believe the sixty four year old retired accountant was acting alone. the u.s. presidents condemned the attack. last night
9:04 am
a gunman opened fire on a large crowd at a country music concert in las vegas nevada he brutally murdered more than fifty people and wounded hundreds more it was an act of pure evil. the massacre has seen democrats renew their demands for tougher gun laws it's become a kind of sick complicity and i hope that in the coming days we can come together republicans and democrats to start talking about at the very least some baby steps to show the people of las vegas to show the people of orlando to show my constituents my friends in sandy hook that silence is no longer an option. the incident on sunday night is now the west must shooting in modern u.s. history. let's go to our u.s.
9:05 am
correspondent causton phenomenon who's standing by for us in las vegas cost and understand you've been speaking to witnesses and survivors of the shooting how are they dealing with what has happened. well it's tough obviously even for those who escaped without physical harm but there is of course that most of us can't even imagine how that feels being at a concert listening to music and suddenly there's chaos this terror people falling down blood everywhere just talked some short while ago to a woman from texas who was at a concert and she described how she and her husband was writes to cover under some chairs and some areas of the festival grounds and suddenly from that hotel the shooting started from the upper floors of the hotel and they were trying to cover
9:06 am
and then they decided to try to run away and and they did but on the way also they . came across people who were injured that woman described how a hospital writes to a system man who had a bleeding wound in his chest and the voice broke when she talked about that so i guess this will take some time for people to really come to grips with what happened to them it's absolutely shocking cost and also the numbers more than fifty killed hundreds injured this attack appears to have been meticulously planned doesn't it. absolutely and the police retrieved twenty three guns from that hotel room so there was definitely some planning some effort involved the police also said that apparently the shooter had smuggled the guns into the hotel in a total of ten suitcases over time you had been renting out that room for several
9:07 am
days waiting for the right moment from his perspective and so he basically really planned this there were another nineteen guns ammunition explosives found in his home here near los vegas but why he did it we don't know the police apparently also doesn't know the man in charge of lombardo said on monday that he cannot get into the mind of a psychopath and the police and to the knowledge least seems to have no clue why this happened this man apparently was relatively wealthy it was not only an accountant he was also a former businessman he liked to gamble here in las vegas had a lot of money apparently according to his brother who spoke to the media and why he snapped at some point why he did this we don't know now i understand the president is due to travel to las vegas how is he likely to be receive them.
9:08 am
well i guess the people here in las vegas expect the president to speak to them in the way that brings people together his statements on monday already went into that direction he stayed above politics this is what americans expect from him right of course that the debate about gun laws as we just heard in that report will definitely go on for the next days weeks and months but we've seen this again and again every time a massacre like this happens there are calls for more gun controls and of course there's a powerful gun lobby supported by many politicians also by many ordinary americans who see the right to bear arms. and basically i'm not quite sure if we really will see a change after some time after some weeks after these events that everything goes back to normal cost and thank you so much u.s.
9:09 am
correspondent costing phenomenon there in las vegas. well the sunday night attack in las vegas is the deadliest mass shooting in recent u.s. history but it's just the latest in a string of gun massacres across the u.s. here are some of the worst shootings over the past decade some of the details the grisly details of those each time there are new calls for tighter arms controls but neither the white house nor congress seem willing or able to act and meanwhile the number of victims of gun violence continues to mount u.s. president donald trump embraced the gun lobby during his campaign and is seen as unlikely to back any new calls for tighter gun control. well joining us now to talk about all this is tyson barker program director with the aspen institute a think tank here in berlin and
9:10 am
a regular commentator on us players here on d.w. good morning. gun control advocates they've now been given another tragic example to illustrate their argument do you think that las vegas will make a difference in the gun control debate in the u.s. i mean it's it's tragic to say that it's going to be quite difficult obviously congress is controlled by the republican party donald trump is president both were heavily supported by the n.r.a. there constituent their core constituents their base are very pro gun so it's hard to see how this can happen and we know that donald trump was backed by the gun lobby the powerful gun lobby in his presidential campaign in the u.s. to what degree do you think that is likely to influence his position on the gun control rights argument i mean because we've had probably ten similar tragedies not of this of this magnitude but similar tragedies including sandy hook we kind of
9:11 am
know what the the play is what the playbook is and what it is is to talk about unity which is very important but not to talk about policy in this acute moment when the mind of the american people can really be focused i would say that there is one area however that people can really make their voices heard with people like chris murphy and that's with this new review that the white house is currently undergoing to liberalize the export of small arms for sales for commercial purposes so basically the white house is considering internationalizing the second amendment in the sale of arms small arms and this is something that americans can say hey wait a second we have an epidemic here we don't want to export this to other countries where does this debate stand in congress right now tyson because i know that there are many congress members of congress who are actually pushing to loosen the control. on gun ownership right i mean you have forceful advocates on both sides and they have their constituencies that they're responding to you have somebody
9:12 am
like chris murphy who is personally affected not a you know he knows those community in sandy hook he represents connecticut in the senate and then on the other side you have people like rand paul ted cruz you know representing strong pro-gun states and they're not going to let things move the truth is you have a blocking majority in congress for any kind of action so it will be very difficult to move something through congress ok tyson thank you so much a tyson barker program director with the aspen institute here in germany thank you so much thank you. take a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world today myanmar has told the u.n. refugee agency its top priority is to bring back room hinch of muslims who have fled to neighboring bangladesh the two countries have agreed to set up a working group to repatriate more than half a million really hinges that escaped an army crackdown in northern kenya state facebook says around ten million people in the u.s. could have been exposed to political ads from russia in the weeks leading up to
9:13 am
last year's presidential election on monday the company turned over three thousand russia linked to the u.s. senate amid ongoing government probes into alleged russian interference in the election. germany is marking twenty seven years since the end of its cold war division this year's day of unity german unity follows hard on the heels of a general election that highlighted the split between east and west of the country september's vote saw a surge in support for far right parties in eastern. catalonia is due for more unrest today as workers there strike in protest at pro police violence that's after heavy handed tactics marred sunday's referendum on independence catalan leaders say ninety percent of voters back to split from spain but critics say the poll was flawed because opponents stayed away now catalonia is asking for international mediation as tensions run high in the region and relations with madrid hit rock bottom. supporters of catalan
9:14 am
independence square out in force through act monday a powerful backdrop to the demands of that regional leader but despite the many defiance in basra now he opened the door to deescalation. a woman can say yeah my of yes you know what i'm now recommending is mediation you have yes you are and that mediation requires the presence of a third party. you know but the party needs to be international for this to be an effective process this is important to restore the institutional normality which has been disturbed by disproportionate decisions from spain central government out on the streets people had mixed views on independence but were united in their condemnation of sunday's firelands and the spanish government. if the government thought it was unlawful it could have been without violence
9:15 am
everything could have happened peacefully and they could have said we don't recognize the result. and i mean it's like going back in time what people on the streets are saying is that franco as time has returned but maybe it never left your good. we don't have to talk about yes or no but about human rights and about what happened on sunday i hope europe does something. better get out of. the european union has indeed expressed concern european council president donald tusk tweeted that he had spoken to spanish prime minister mariano rajoy and appealed to him to avoid escalation roy later met with spanish opposition leaders for emergency talks as spain faces its biggest constitutional crisis in decades there are fears of prolonged instability and unrest. the catalan parliament is
9:16 am
expected to vote later this week on whether to make a declaration of independence unless talks resolve the crisis it could be set to deepen even further. and joining us from barcelona is the corresponding. unions and other groups there called for a general strike in catalonia today what's the purpose of that strike and how is it supposed to help matters. well the official purpose terry is to keep up the pressure on the government in madrid and make sure that the message calms across that the people who support independence here in catalonia want to take this all the way through with it really want independence they really want a separation from the rest of the country but also the other of people who will probably take to the streets today to condemn violence altogether all those images that the f. seen playing out there on sunday when the police cracked down on the referendum or
9:17 am
on the people who participated in that referendum that is deemed illegal and invalid so it's a mixture of both both officially to condemn violence but at the same time to keep that pressure up ok so still trying to keep up the pressure there for the independence movement in catalonia now the people who voted in that referendum and who held a referendum for independence knew that the that the federal police were going to try to stop it what do they excess how how has the police violence that they witnessed yesterday affected the debate about independence in catalonia. well it was clear that the police the national police of spain is going to do everything to make sure that the law is upheld to enforce the fact that the law that was reached by the participants in this vote that this bill was appalled that the constitution works that democracy works according to the spanish constitution and a lot of people are upset in fact just this morning i've seen
9:18 am
a few people here walking down already on one of the main boulevard shouting a strike they are upset because they say completely irrelevant of the fact who is supporting independence in catalonia what most people in catalonia disagree with but also many parts of spain and many parts of europe as well the a for a different voices is that it wasn't supposed to be a while and it wasn't supposed to be that we see images of policemen pulling women by the hair out of polling stations and many other horrific images and that's exactly that's changing the debate as well because there are some people who i've been talking to on the streets who say i have not support independence so far but after that while and crackdown on sunday i'm going to support independence as well so where will the standoff go from here we know about the strike today or couple of authorities likely to declare independence on the basis of sunday's referendum.
9:19 am
that's a really good question terry it really is a standoff and really everybody is waiting both moderate the capital city of spain as well as barcelona the capital city of catalonia the region what's next now a different run down small could be for example that really the the regional problem and catalonia is calling out or declaring independence now when that happens what madrid could do is basically. use article one hundred fifty five of the constitution which would mean in danger of the unity of spain they could strip catalonia altogether all of their autonomy if that happens. more violence is going to iraq but as you hear already if you don't really know what's going to happen in the next hours what we know what we do know at this point of course is police is bracing for more protests and definitely that not only that acts few hours but the next few days are going to be full of tensions as so far there's no medication in
9:20 am
