protest against police violence during sunday's independence referendum spain's interior minister says the kalam government of quote inciting rebellion. parts of barcelona at a standstill today. others meanwhile pulsating to the rhythms of separatism. the demonstrations angry at times. and then defiantly still these barcelona firemen holding up their arms in silent protest at sunday's police violence. support for the strike wasn't universal but enthusiasm for independence appears to be spreading. i feel like i deserved the independence we have a different culture we have a different language and i support it but i'm not sure what will happen these days
5:03 pm
because it's it's a scary situation we don't know what the spanish government is capable of and we well you've seen october the first how that went. with public transport in barcelona providing only a limited service there were mixed reactions from people trying to get to work. on the one side it's a hassle to get to work in the middle of a strike. is i thought he was suffering this because a few have decided to behave in an improper way. on the other hand i understand the circumstances surrounding the strike. it's those circumstances that offending political passions and fostering calls for outside intervention. while lower tensions escalating in a growing uncertainty on how to move forward let's get the latest now from barcelona. is on the ground good to see
5:04 pm
a funny what's it like in barcelona right now set the scene for us. some of the demonstrations are basically wrapping up in fact there's one here behind me right in front of the office of the president of catalonia president. this is a demonstration in favor of independence of course here people are calling on the president of catalonia as well as on the mayor of barcelona the office is just across here the other from the house the other office in front of me they're calling on them to make sure that they keep the pressure up on that is on the central government that they really declare independence which has not happened yet now as you have just heard and seen in the report before most protests today quite peaceful remain peaceful however when ever you see the spanish police the national police crossing the street or trying to make sure that suv things are protected shops are protected except you hear chance that these are occupants they should
5:05 pm
leave they should go back to madrid of course people are referring to what happened on sunday to the violence to the violent crackdown of the referendum so even though most things are peaceful there are tensions and re the question is if this is going to be sort of like a tipping point in the atmosphere that could lead to violence again let's talk a little bit more about that because during your time there in barcelona you've spoken to callahan's share with us with days been telling you do you get the sense that they unanimously back their regions push for independence. so. you can also see when you look at the at the results of the referendum most people did not even go to cast their ballot of course the ones who did around forty two percent say yes to independents but the majority of catalonia did not go to cast their ballot because they say they do want to vote and maybe participate in a referendum if in the future but the one that is backed by spain so you really hear different and mixed voices
5:06 pm
a lot of young people are supporting independence many of them what others are saying i'm taking to the streets to simply condemn violence without any a political reference to made so yes they are united when it comes to the question was divide justified most of them say no it was not but they are split themselves over the question but i catalonia should be independent so a very complex picture emerges there funny callen leaders want to see an international mediation take place specifically what they want is the e.u. to broker a potential secession talks how likely is that to happen. well at this point and even though the european parliament is putting this topic on their agenda today already they've met in two more they're going to talk about the issue as well most of people from europe most politicians that have expressed their concern say this is still a domestic issue and it needs to be booked out between mother and barcelona said
5:07 pm
they're really asking for dialogue here i do not see any sign yet of meditation have are these may change regarding what happens next regarding how the standoff between barcelona and mothered it continues and that question and that's where we will see either mediation take place by a third party which could be brussels could be another third party as well a lot of unknowns at this point a lot of unknowns and a lot of uncertainty if any fish are reporting from barcelona thank you. and of course barcelona is home to spanish soccer giants barcelona who have thrown their weight behind a general strike in catalonia on tuesday while they still strike was called as a phony has been out reporting by labor unions to protest police violence by our son asked concerned that it will seize all commercial activities in solidarity while the club is synonymous with the catalan identity and present. said
