family unbelievable. is certainly a phenomenon starting october fifteenth on t.w. . this is daily news live from berlin the dream of a world without nuclear weapons wins this year's nobel peace prize judges on ring i can the international campaign to abolish nuclear weapons while warning of a rising risk of nuclear conflict. also on the program the spanish government apologizes for police violence during catalonia is disputed referendum on sunday

but the big question remains will catalan leaders declare independence next week we'll go live to barcelona for more. hello and welcome my name is christopher spring a good to have you with us this is nobel peace prize has been awarded to the international campaign to abolish nuclear weapons i can the group played a key role in last year's adoption of a united nations treaty aimed at eliminating nuclear weapons the nobel committee says it on it i can for reviving efforts to ban such weapons at a time of a new global tension. the norwegian nobel committee has decided to award the nobel peace prize for twenty seventeen to the international campaign to abolish nuclear weapons. that you never

based organization is more commonly known as i can it owned a significant victory when the un adopted a symbolic nuclear treaty addressing the issue the chair of the norwegian nobel committee said the risk of nuclear weapons being used is currently greater than it has been for a long time. when you. take a historical look it seems like there have been moments where it's been more engagement among nuclear states to. disarmament initiatives i do not believe we are in such a moment today. none of the nine no nuclear powers have signed up to the new do entreating pushed by the group. the award also comes amid heightened tensions over north korea's nuclear development and us president donald trump's criticism of the

deal curbing iran's nuclear program something i can find deeply concerning i think that their brand deal is really important and it will be really really unfortunate security risk for the world if that was ripped up especially at a time when iran is complying with the deal. so i think that treating the deal needs to remain be supported. and has pledged to step up its campaign and to do even more until all nuclear weapons are eliminated. michael the group of video vault has been talking to a board member of i can chat to him in germany getting her reaction to the award. misho how surprised were you this morning oh completely surprised we were just taken totally we just didn't know that this was really coming i really thought it

would go to someone else and we're very very happy this year two thousand and seventeen the u.n. treaty on the ban of nuclear weapons was signed but not by all countries so what do you think what effect could this noble produce peace prize how well it was signed by the first fifty just under twenty three september but one hundred twenty two had already passed its and they they were passed in negotiations and so we expect that within the next year they will also sign a ratifying which is really you know a majority of states in this world so if you already have a majority saying you can weapons. it's rather hard for the small group of about forty states that still rely on nuclear deterrents to just ignore it so that's the main effect that it will have is that they will have to actually you know get to grips with the fact that this treaty exists among the forty countries that didn't
9:05 pm
sign the treaty is germany germany itself doesn't have any nuclear weapons but it is within nato and germany said today well we share the same goal i can but we don't really think that. that this is the best way to go to reach the goal so what you say about well the first thing is that germany doesn't have any when you corrections of its own but it does have u.s. nuclear weapons on its soil and not only does it have those weapons here it also trains pilots to fly them should they ever be used so we're actively taking pants in germany and in the planning and also you know. the actual technical backing as it were the support and giving soil for these nuclear weapons and a possible nuclear war so to just say. somehow or another this is just not the way to go about it when germany could if they were to join this treaty it would make an

enormous difference if one of the allies of the united states my old country the united kingdom and france was to say we don't want you clear weapons and more we're not the lying on nuclear deterrent for security that would make a massive difference example of i can drive new thank you so much. turning to spain our top government official has apologized to those injured by police violence in catalonia last weekend some eight hundred people injured in clashes with spanish police as the region your thomas region held a north unauthorized independence referendum on sunday now this may be a sign that the tone between madrid and barcelona in the standoff over catalonian independence is softening it comes also as catalonia as leader has been meeting with a newly formed team of mediators. if the catalan president's power struggle
9:07 pm
with spain is to end any time soon he will need the help of mediators like those he met with today. and he may be listening to his guests carl last push them all said he will update parliament on the current political situation on tuesday and didn't doing so he avoided breaking a constitutional ban on a station shared job from monday. i gesture of goodwill says his party. in brazil know that but you must the president of catalonia has a great opportunity to make the real statement he made a few days ago which is to start a dialogue. meanwhile in madrid a possible change in strategy for the first time the spanish government issued an apology of sorts for the heavy handed policing of sunday's illegal referendum. i said this very clearly before the police were following an order they where in order to avoid an illegal vote they were ordered to seize ballot boxes if there
9:08 pm
were incidents and there where and if people were injured evidently we are all sorry. but pressure is piling on catalan leaders are spain's started largest bank agreed to move its registered offices out of the breakaway region. it comes just catalonia so-called silent majority who oppose separation begin finding their voice and get into the problem is not between the government the problem is between one half of the cutting one people and the other half of the catalan people. and on sunday the prosperous unionist plans to take back the streets with a demonstration of their own. ok let's get the latest now from. zeven who's monitoring events for us in barcelona and mixed signals coming from barcelona today on one hand we saw in our report the original leader meeting mediators so apparently
9:09 pm
a push for some form of mediation on the other hand we're hearing that regional policymakers do appear to be working on a declaration of independence for next week so what should we believe. well that's the big question here there are indeed very mixed signals here the spanish newspaper el mundo reports and quotes a catalan lawmaker here in the parliament that they are very working on independence in fact negotiating about the text and there are indeed other reports that the party of the catalan leader puts them on is actually only waiting for madrid to make a gesture to make a concession so they could start negotiating and it's hard to really know what to believe ok well you're monitoring events for us so your you'll keep us up to date on that the other thing that's interesting we've been talking for many days now
9:10 pm
about the divisions between madrid and barcelona but of course there are divisions within the region of catalonia itself you know is the entire region behind this push for independence or or how big are the divisions within catalonia itself well the divisions are huge you can't really we don't really have reliable numbers on how many people are against and how many people are for independence but there is a low huge number on both sides that's a fact and many people have the impression that they can't really express their opinion freely anymore because no matter which opinion they have the other side would attack them and not really low them to speak freely so there is a huge division socially right now and people are really concerned about that ok

great talking to you and as of easy been reporting for us from barcelona. now some fifty witnesses could give evidence to determine whether a top advisor to pope francis in australia will stand trial on sex abuse charges cardinal george pell leaving a melbourne court on friday after a date was set for a four week hearing to begin in march the seventy six year olds accused of multiple sex crimes the details can't be made public for legal reasons pelle is the highest ranking catholic official to face such accusations he has consistently denied any wrongdoing. turning to the u.s. now where investigators looking into the mass shooting in last vegas say the golan may have scouted other sites before hand last sunday i remember sixty four year old stephen paddick shot dead dozens of people from a high rise hotel room before killing himself officials say he booked similar hotel

a police officer who had attended the festival off duty. fifty eight victims fifty eight stories of bereavement. the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history was possible because the gunman stephen paddick had modified his arsenal of weapons with legal so-called bump stocks. these devices allow guns to fire at a rapid rate almost like fully automatic weapons. in the wake of the shooting the trumpet ministration deflected initial calls for tighter gun legislation. but now the chiefs of the national rifle association have released a statement in a surprise concession for an organization that famously opposes any hint of new restrictions it calls for a federal review of stocks that make rapid fire easier with semiautomatic weapons.

moments after the white house press secretary praised the announcement. this afternoon members of both parties in multiple organizations are planning to take a look at the stocks and related devices we certainly welcome that would like to be part of that conversation but the organization that the n.r.a. wants to talk with handling the bomb struck issue is the bureau of alcohol tobacco and firearms a move that has already been interpreted by some as a strategy to keep the issue out of congress and avoid any more sweeping gun controls. in a country where since the attack on sunday at least eighty seven people have been killed by firearms the n.r.a. is proposal is a far cry from corrective action. now there was a hair rise paraphrasing rather experienced during yesterday's storm here in germany for the passengers of an emirates flight landing at dissolute airport a
