this is deja vu news live from berlin a show of support for a united spain others of thousands taking to the streets of barcelona to protest against call on independence leaders warned any breakaway efforts by cattle on leaders will have no a fact also on the show. has the german chancellor changed her position on migration as part of coalition talks or conservative c.d.u.
10:01 am
has reached a compromise deal on limiting the number of migrants will get some analysis. plus and prison than tortured for being gay will bring you the first installment in an exclusive series this week looking at what it means to be homosexual in russia. i'm brian thomas welcome to the show in spain there's been a massive rally in barcelona against plans by catalan leaders to declare independence the march came as the spanish prime minister said he would take measures to prevent the region from breaking away organizers say nearly a million demonstrators packed into the center of barcelona local police putting that number at three hundred fifty thousand the protesters called for an end to the country's worst political crisis in decades. we have this report now from d.w.
10:02 am
scared us who has asked that demonstration. was. long live the nation is the message. christina a student from barcelona and her friend couldn't agree more they feel cut to learn spanish and european. you know you don't hear me about it i was born here but my entire family comes from all over spain the supporters of independence have no right to keep us out of it it was you know some of what you know we don't want a fragmented and divided europe we want europe to floors and we want to be part of it and i want to start then to but many in catalonia who oppose independence such as this architect are still against sunday's protest they worry it could increase tensions. this spanish the spanish flag.
10:03 am
and the most russian with spanish flags of the station with god from france because because. i think it's not. a very good idea to have. the streets filled with the two sides because they're going to clash. but for protest to christina sunday's munch was a success she says the people here represents cup loney is silent majority organizers say it was the biggest ever protest against catalonia seceding from spain the. well will he or won't he joining us now from barcelona steve have used a funny thought are a funny will they call on leader declare independence. that's that one million dollar question nobody really knows how to answer because there's so many conflicting voices coming out both from the government the conflicting voices in the population but also when you look at the verbal reactions the verbal actions that are coming here from the office of the catalonia president
10:04 am
catalonian president puts them on so it's really unclear what he's going to happen and to stay out of a some voices in the government suggest that this may be a declaration of an independence slide that means a symbolic recognition of independence also calm some voices down the radical voices the very passionate voices already to take to the streets here in barcelona to push for independence but at the same time to make sure that the comes tellin or catalonia regional president here president president bush to mount does not lose his credibility following what about the central government in madrid how would it react to any declaration of independence by catalonia including the independence lite version you mentioned. well legally they say the central government says they're going to use any legal method that takes root use that is in the framework of the spanish constitution for one article one
10:05 am
hundred fifty five that would mean that the central government could this miss the government here they could call for new elections they could in fact invoke a state of the movement see here and it could file criminal charges against politicians who participate in this independent school because this is the verdict that motherhood and some politicians within the government within the government use this is an independence group and they want to stop that promise that are said again and again that spain must remain spain and he will do anything and everything possible to stop that it is a ration of independence is going to into a fact or is even declared you know we saw of course this massive protest rally on on sunday or any other protest planned what's the situation right now. apparently there is going to be a general strike in the next day so hard it's not quite clear if it's when it's going to happen however it's been consider that a journalist strike is going to take place here in barcelona as it already happened
10:06 am
last week also a pro in depends demonstration is an els for tomorrow by the same civic organization that has organized the pro independence demonstration last week tuesday so right as you can see it as you can hear of course people who are for independence trying to keep the pressure up try to keep up the pressure on the government to make sure that they did clear the clear independence in its real way as it was promised after a friend and as i say though this is unclear if this is really going to happen in tuesday funny foster following all the latest developments for us in barcelona thanks so much for that for now. here in germany chance for all americans governing christian democrats and their sister party the bavarian sea as you say they found middle ground on their long running dispute over refugee policy announcement came after tough talks on sunday night the leaders say they have agreed to try to keep the total number of refugees germany except to two hundred thousand per year since
10:07 am
the refugee crisis began twenty fifteen on the americans said she would not accept any cap on refugee numbers for the very latest on the story let's cross over now to our political correspondent thomas sparrow thomas johnson machall has said time and time again that she's against any limit two hundred thousand has been the magical number there is she now backing down. brian in a way she is backing down in particular after this agreement that was reached yesterday it's seen as a concession to the sister party the c. as you head of the very difficult coalition talks but very important for. two caveats one if you look at the wording of the agreement it clearly state that it's a it's a goal that they want to reach and second it is a goal that they want to reach that is absolutely not set in stone in other words depending on the national all the international context that limits could be moved
10:08 am
up or down and also for angela merkel something very important is the agreement does not include the german word or back then that's the upper limit for the number of refugees and this is the word that has obviously determined the whole debate and the whole confrontation between the c.s.u. under c.d.u. in the last few months and years so yes in a way she is giving that concession to her sister's party but when she comes to sell that she will probably say that she is still against the orbit and see us as such ok now as you mentioned there's a lot of importance you're being placed on the wording there's a lot of wiggle room as well for both sides in this agreement will that make the issue of migration easier to deal with when merkel talks to her potential coalition partners well in a way all these cabinets could prove to be helpful when the different parties sit down at one table and try to find common ground but it is important to say that this will only make the situation more difficult in general because any type of
10:09 am
a cap is something that the green party for example will probably reject in fact some members of the green party have already said that they are against the agreement reached by the conservative bloc so although there is room. kept such the limit and that magic number that you mentioned of two hundred thousand is something that will only make negotiations much more data. when they actually sit down and try to find common ground on migration ok now even discussing a possible cap on migration has been off limits up until now will this help on the america will win back the voters that she's lost on migration i think brian it ultimately depends on what type of agreement is reached with the coalition partners this is only the very very first stage of negotiations that goal yesterday was to try and find common ground between the two systems parties the conservative bloc what will come next is much more difficult than dot ultimately whether merkel gets
10:10 am
to win back some of those voters will depend on what type of agreement she reaches thomas sparrow for us this morning thanks very much for those insights thomas. now for some of the other stories making the news the international committee of the red cross is set to drastically reduce its operations in afghanistan the aid group said it was forced to take the decision after attacks that killed seven of its staff members this year. u.s. vice president mike pence has walked out of an american football game after some players know during the national anthem the players were staging a silent protest against racial injustice part of a movement that began a year ago then said he would not dignify any event that disrespects the u.s. national anthem flag or the country soldiers. the oscar winning hollywood movie producer harvey weinstein has been fired from his production company following allegations of sexual harassment the producer of movies like shakespeare and love

so far no action has been taken against the myanmar army whose actions have led to the mass exodus of the room. this is the interview news still to come on the show imprisoned and tortured for their sexual orientation we'll bring you the first installment in an exclusive series of reports this week looking at what it means to be gay in russia. of political uncertainty we've been reporting on in catalonia is rattling the spanish business community at large and markets across europe brian equity markets are preparing certainly for a potential shock this week as catalonia threatens to formally declare independence from spain major companies in the region are scrambling with a telecommunications firm cell next scheduled to discuss moving out of the catalonia capital of barcelona to madrid a break with spain would also effectively mean that catalonia would lose its
10:16 am
current status within the e.u. trading block driving up the cost of imports and exports the government in madrid is now making it easier for companies in catalonia to swiftly move headquarters out of the region and so far two major banks banks and bank have set their doing so. well that's enough input for european markets to be on edge let's see how the day started in frankfurt and cross over to. nail. more and more companies are turning their back on catalonia only spanish firms. well the ones that we have heard of so far have been spanish companies that were headquartered in catalonia apart from the ones you've mentioned we've also seen gas the cloth and not some moving out that is spain's largest domestic energy company biotech arise and in total we have more than a dozen companies moving out of catalonia saying that however it isn't just spanish
10:17 am
companies that may consider a change because of this unrest one of the companies that's reportedly thinking of moving out of catalonia is of course a beret that's a highway management firm it is spanish but of course it's also the target of a sixteen billion euro takeover bid from spain from italy's adland and that bit is of course meant to create the largest highway toll highway operator in the world that was on track for approval by spanish authorities but of course the political uncertainty might believe that deal so this certainly is an issue limited to the spanish business community alone you also have international companies like unilever being affected by strikes and other things ok so there are a wider repercussions certainly would you say i mean do these the departures also be that markets are betting on catalonia seceding. nobody knows for sure what's going to happen but the departures do of course mean that the companies are certainly making sure that all their bases are covered now you all are you already mentioned those regulations that are meant to ease departures out
10:18 am
of catalonia and of course that is part of the greater spanish strategy to ease to ratchet up economic tensions in the region to put on more economic pressure on the catalan government but it's important to see these departures for what they are for now they're mostly administrative changes they're just changing their addresses they're just changing their headquarters so far that has no real impact on operations or on employees these are usually big enough companies that they have offices over everywhere in spain but as the story moves along and the potential for escalation becomes greater this could of course translate to greater economic impact as well rise and this is exactly what the international monetary fund. example say. that catalan exit would impact investor confidence not just now but in the long run ratings agency standards and poor's of course downgraded catalonia credit rating already all bad for catalonia but what about spain and the rest of the eurozone. well economically speaking it's hard to see who the winners will be
10:19 am
catalonia would need a new currency one that of course would be of lesser value than the euro the state and the companies would have to pay back the real value debt and we doubt that that will have knock off effects on the rest of the eurozone of course catalonia represents a fifth of spain's g.d.p. and two percent on the european level it also hosts around six thousand companies that would either be forced to move or reckon with new rules so really any way you look at it this will hurt financially speaking all right general do malone in frankfurt thank you so much for this update. for forty one connoisseurs and anyone who enjoys a glass of fine brandy colognes a new food fair might just be the closest thing to experiencing heaven on earth but are you ready for a vegan or crickets dipped in snack source our new go reporter manuel said it didn't take much convincing even if some products left him gasp for air. whipped

yet i get so used to we used to grow algae to make bio diesel and then we saw it'll be a long time before tourney algae into fuel will be profitable we also noticed that algae has very valuable ingredients and that made us think the time is ready to eat it. it after yes yes it's at that if you can kind of see that certain things alternative proteins are going to be demanded in the future there's going to be way too many people out there to feed you know in terms of using the current structures so using alternative sources of ingredients such as micro algae or insects which are service alternatives to. animal based proteins this is very is very important and will certainly be one of the solutions that the industry is looking for going forward insect burgers instead of bratwurst algae drinks instead of soda first consumers need to be convinced.
