this is d.w. news the live from berlin donald trump creek knights a feud with iran just certifying the landmark agreement to curb its nuclear program but the us president stopped short of took petering the deal in leaving its fate in the hands of congress also on the program. australia is expected to swing to the right in this sunday's elections we look at how a hardline immigration stance has helped a frontrunner as a bastion could snap up support. and an old hand is back to guide by in munich in the bundesliga. is out to prove his team can get back on track.

i'm a diff to money welcome to the program u.s. president donald trump says he will not recertify the twenty fifteen iran nuclear deal which saw iran shelve its disputed nuclear program in exchange for the easing of international sanctions now trump accused iran of violating the spirit of the agreement but stopped short of canceling the deal instead has called on u.s. lawmakers and international partners to fix its flaws every ninety days the u.s. president has to certify to congress that iran is complying with the agreement trump had done that twice before but now has refused to sign ahead of a sunday deadline. now congress must decide whether to reimpose sanctions or scrap the deal here's some more of what trump had to say importantly iran is not living up to the spirit of the deal so today in recognition of the increasing menace posed by iran and after extensive consultations with our allies

i am announcing a new strategy to address the full range of iran's destructive actions i am announcing today that we cannot and will not make this certification we will not continue down a path whose predictable conclusion is more violence more terror and the very real threat of iran's nuclear breakout. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu welcome trump's announcement congratulating the u.s. president for what he called a quote courageous step now the response from other world leaders has been much less enthusiastic the deal took more than a decade to negotiate between the united states china russia great britain france germany and iran it was finally signed in twenty fifteen. there was dancing in the streets of the iranian capital tehran when the agreement was finally

reached after the mess of effort that went into securing the deal to control iran's nuclear program those who'd been instrumental in the negotiations reacted strongly to trump's announcement. more than two years ago exactly in july twenty fifteen the entire international community welcomed the result of twelve years of intense negotiations on the iranian nuclear program one hundred and four pages full of technical details. the joint compressive govern action. it is not a bilateral agreement it does not belong to any single country and it is not up to any single country to terminate it german foreign minister. said scrapping the treaty would send a quote dangerous signal in the show to do it in the next few weeks we'll do everything in our power to persuade u.s.
2:05 pm
congress to uphold the agreement and to discuss how we can change iran's behavior in other areas of middle east politics we believe your agreement must be preserved as the. iranian president hassan rouhani said his country will continue to respect the nuclear deal in spite of trump's quote insults in a speech on state television rouhani said the agreement was much stronger than trump thinks more you know if we will continue to cooperate with the international atomic energy agency in the framework of international treaties but if someday our interests are not realized and other parties want to violate their commitments they should be aware that iran will not hesitate a moment and will respond to them. hard that the want of possible hot weather congress will make the changes trump wants remains to be seen it would seem that much of his bluster is for domestic consumption after weeks of divisions
2:06 pm
within the republican party and infighting among his aides the president is trying to reassert his campaign priorities and play to his support base. well for more on this i'm joined now by our correspondent arrest a trucker who has covered many stories from iran thanks for being with us so we just heard iran's president has been rouhani saying that he still wants to stick to this deal is there any chance that iran might change its mind not right now iran and see it from speech as a major violation of the deal but he hasn't said anything that's completely unacceptable for them he do to decertify that agreement but he didn't pull out he announced sanctions against the revolutionary guards but didn't officially labeled them as a terror organization which would have been a red line for tehran so for now the agreement stands but that might change of congress decides to pull out and violated by every imposing sanctions that were part of the deal right now trump has drawn criticism from all sides because of this

stance and it's not just abroad but at home as well let's listen to democrat minority leader in the house of representatives nancy pelosi. the iran nuclear agreement was the best way to prevent iran from becoming a nuclear armed state to president trump through fuser to recertify is a grave mistake threatens america's security credibility at a very critical time. so we're hearing what fellow americans are saying but what about europeans do they have any leverage to pressure congress into staying in this deal they have to try if that's what iran expects them to do now it expects them to take a stand and defend the nuclear agreement and not only with words like we've just heard but also with actions so that might include trying to find a way to talk to iran about its behavior in middle eastern politics which was not a part of the deal at all but it's now widely criticized by the u.s.
2:08 pm
that way they could show that there's room for improvement even without canceling the deal but it's important to remember that the deal was not only signed by the u.s. but by five other countries as well and they all want to keep it so the five plus one was signed the deal with iran has now have turned into a five against one and that one is the united states now and trampy saying that he can't personally cancel this do at any time what will iran do if the u.s. does actually make true its threats one thing is certain they will not renegotiate because the iranians have long been skeptical of whether washington can be trusted when it comes to agreements and if trump's now trying now pulled out of the deal although iran complies with that then he approves them bright and that would weaken president rouhani stance who was the strongest supporter of the deal inside iran and it would strengthen the hardliners because there except of limitations on their nuclear program just because they got sanctions relief in return and if that now is
2:09 pm
gone they will end those limitations and probably invest more than ever before into the nuclear program terrorists a truck thank you for your insight time now for some of the other stories making news around the world u.s. backed forces fighting so-called islamic states say they are waging a final battle to uproot the extremists from maraca they say one hundred of the group's fighters have surrendered in the last twenty four hours the city is iris is defacto capital in syria and has been besieged since june. former french culture minister audrey as a day has been named the new head of unesco the board of the u.n. cultural agency selected however arrival from qatar the announcement comes a day after the u.s. and israel said they're pulling out of unesco washington accuses the organization of anti israel bias being too expensive and of voiding reform firefighters have made headway against devastating wildfires in the heart of
