a governing majority so he'll probably have to form a coalition government one likely partner is the far right freedom party which also made strong gains. we'll have the latest results from the poll with almost all of the votes counted the conservative people's party led by sebastian kurtz are at three thirty one point six percent it's been a tight race for second place the far right freedom party have twenty six percent this puts them behind the social democrats led by austria's current chancellor christian kern who are at twenty six point nine percent and looking at the smaller parties keep in mind a party needs at least four percent of the vote to secure seats in parliament the liberal neo's are at five point one percent big losses for the greens who at three point nine percent pete uphill says list founded by former greens lawmaker is at four point three percent the vote marks a swing to the right in austria in

a speech after the current said changes are on the way. this is not to do with this distribution new political party in this country we must food new culture . also to work together for the country. and most of all we have to change the country for the better. joining us now from vienna is g.w. correspondent max hoffman the young conservative leader has declared victory and he says changes are coming what kind of changes can the world expect. of course it depends on the coalition that he will have but if we try to grasp something from the persons of us in courts and the way he had his campaign it's not that easy because he took things from the left he took things from the middle but mainly he had his campaign that was oriented to the right so we know he wants to reduce immigration he might want tax relief for the lower and middle income
9:04 pm
brackets he said he was against same sex marriage but there is still not a lot of detail to what he actually wants he always talks about a new political style but now he will have to fill this up with some meat and potatoes so a swing to the right but not a lot of details forthcoming right now and he'll need a party to govern with and is there any doubt right now that that will be the far right freedom party. well you said it this evening again he said i don't exclude anything so he didn't want to make a clear commitment to the freedom party the right wing freedom party and of course if you do the math there are other options that are possible mainly to continue the grand coalition with the social democrats but taking into account that he basically ended that grand coalition it doesn't seem very likely at this point so yes most people here are the experts the journalists the politicians do believe that we will have the right wing coalition between the austrian people's party and the freedom party in the end but of course it'll take some to go shitty. so we saw that

migration and the refugee crisis were some of the key issues of this election and what are the results say about the voters attitudes. that's true the migration issue got the most published city and it's probably the one thing where most parties were very detailed about so for examples of busting courts wants to close the mediterranean route where you have a lot of migrants coming from africa to australia he wants to cut down benefits for migrants that are in the country those kind of things but it's too early to say this was really the decisive issue one thing's for certain this was a very personalized campaign and it was also a campaign where just the youthful appearance of course had his effect and what do you also talks about the change in political style austrians were fed up with the bickering of the grand coalition with the lack of reforms and he promises a new beginning a new style very much like the money with michael in france and that might have won

him the vote as well. max hoffman in vienna thank you very much. and it's a night of nail biting in the german state of lower saxony the governing coalition is waiting to find out whether it has received enough votes to stay in power and the answer is changing from hour to hour the result could have a big influence on coalition talks here in berlin what's certain is that it has been a bad night for chancellor angela merkel and her christian democrats the c.d.u. but it's been a good night for the social democrats let's take a look at the latest projected results the c.d.u. is in second with thirty three point six percent of the vote the social democrats are s.p.d. has made big gains coming out on top with thirty one point seven percent the green party is in third with eight point nine percent the pro-business f.d.p. party takes seven point four percent the left party takes four point six percent which is not enough to clear the five percent hurdle for seats in parliament and
9:07 pm
the right wing alternative for germany is on six point one percent which puts them in the state parliament in lower saxony for the first time in total there are one hundred thirty five seats in the lower saxony state parliament and hand over based on the projected results the christian democrats will take forty nine of those seats the social democrats will have the largest share with fifty four the green party will have thirteen seats in the house the liberal f.d.p. party gets ten and the far right alternative for germany will have nine of the one hundred thirty five seats that means the current coalition of greens and social democrats fall short of having a governing majority i'm joined here now in the studio by thomas sparrow from the politics desk and our correspondent michelle cool down is also standing by for us in hanover. let's start with you what sort of government could be formed at this point. well what the social democrats who are the clear winners here
9:08 pm
certainly hope hoping for is that the final numbers and we might not learn that until well into monday might after all produce a continuation option for the social democrats and the green party who are currently just one seat short now failing that it would get incredibly complicated with the free democrats opposed business few democrats already ruling out going into coalition with the greens and the social democrats basically gets complicated almost as complicated as it currently is in berlin where of course this signal is being heard very clearly that the christian democrats who did win in the end in those general elections despite suffering losses had a far way down here in the opinion polls where they were leading until just a couple weeks ago to then be beaten by the social democrats who now of course are getting this late boost after their election defeat here in lower saxony having

said that it's a bit like comparing apples with pears these were very regional issues here in lower saxony and the state premier of vile here was gaining in popularity as time went by so it's a very different set up here but a clear signal towards belin. and speaking of berlin thomas where we're sitting here in berlin what does this result mean for the national political scene is this bad news for angela marco it is indeed bad news for under merkel but i think mentioned the key word there my and that key word is signal although in these regional elections as much as if you have regional topics at the forefront they do tend to set the tone of what will happen next in berlin and there is the political debate among the parties and what comes next here in berlin and this in fact starts only in a few days is the negotiations for the possible future coalition at the federal level in other words i'm going to merkel's conservative bloc trying to negotiate with the greens on the one hand with the liberals on the other hand and this is

something that promises to be incredibly difficult there are topics where these parties do not see eye to eye on migration or europe obviously there are other aspects where they could find common ground more easily do you try as asian but it is something that is definitely not good news for anglo-american result in lower saxony. michela the i've de the alternative for germany is now entering its fourteenth regional parliament is this changing the political landscape again. well it does to some degree but one has to say that here as far as the competition between the two largest party saloon s.p.d. is concerned it's pretty much back to the eighty's where those two parties in the end made up more than seventy percent they actually struggled to make up fifty percent in the general polls not the a if do you arrive here on the scene just about making it into the regional parliament above the five percent threshold gaining some six percent here six
