8:20 am
that would hit us reduces especially hard and it's not just the three countries that a feeling nervous many foreign firms are hoping that a deal is reached as soon as possible. meanwhile president trump's efforts to reduce immigration of prompt countries to step up recruiting of tech talent that might want to found a home in the united states at the beginning of the year and was in opened a new engineering office in mexico city facebook has partnered up with local groups to develop technical talent in the region and oracle plans to hire thousands of additional employees at its offices in mexico as well. wise line is a sense francisco tech firm with two hundred sixty employees based in mexico city and guadalajara it is invited so-called dreamers who could face deportation from the u.s. to apply for jobs in mexico but it's not just america's dreamers that are moving
8:21 am
their tech talent from around the world is now flocking to mexico for work the fact that nearing is a globalized profession that many of the things you need years learn in do share a common language which is and was allowed us to bring people from egypt from brazil from many parts of the wall and it's very good for a while in mexico in general and wise line one of the key benefits of operating in mexico has been the ability to attract and relocate foreign workers with us since opening offices there in twenty fourteen the company has brought in workers from france india and china among other countries finitely mexico it's a country willing to embrace every single talented person that my when i return or actually if it's coming from a different country to be part of this ticket in this story we will welcome them and we want to raise them. mexico's tech sector is enjoyed healthy job growth in recent years from mexico though there is

a special urgency more than six hundred thousand undocumented immigrants of mexican origin may soon have to look for work abroad as a result of the trumpet ministrations decision to let dhaka policy expire. now australia will be paying close attention to statements coming out of the communist party congress in beijing off china is all straight is largest export market the past signed a free trade agreement back in twenty fifteen and i'm going to be talking to the australian minister a finance in just a moment but first let's take a closer look at the state of the australian economy now it has set a world record for going without a recession for the last twenty six yes since ninety nine. one the country's economy has been growing something that most finance ministers can only dream of and that's largely thanks to an unparalleled who is materials it's just got thousands of tons of minerals coal gas and precious metals most of which are
8:23 am
exported to china so as we mentioned the australian economy is very much dependent on china's now the inclusion of australia in the trans-pacific partnership set certainly suffered a major setback when the us president donald trump referred to the agreement as a potential disaster withdrawing his country from negotiations and as a result australia's economic ties with the e.u. and its largest economy germany but came even more interesting for the world's twelfth largest economy the land down under is now a springboard for european investors targeting the pacific region but australia certainly needs new stimulus for growth in major cities like melbourne now their real estate is going on to the hammer every weekend housing prices are going through the roof and many are warning of a bubble many australians are also in debt so it is so australia's economic luck running out lets off the country's minister for finance coleman who joins us
8:24 am
from canberra this morning very nice to see you thank you for joining us mr coleman . now u.s. president donald trump has killed the trans-pacific partnership when it comes to thank you when it comes to exports you're dependent on china china says it's looking for more global trade so is australia looking to europe for more trade. well. globally focused outward looking open try to economy i mean you're right china is our most important trying part now but europe as a bloc is actually our second largest trading partner to die europe the european union as a bloc largest source of foreign direct investment and of course you know we are keen to strengthen and you know broad and deep and strengthen the opportunities to do business all around the world i mean we've been pursuing
8:25 am
a very ambitious free try to gender entering into free try to agreements yes with china but also with japan and south korea singapore the united states we are pursuing a free trade agreement with the european union and we've been very grateful for the very constructive engagement that we fight with europe and in particular with the german government mr coleman of course the industrial revolution is something that's facing us here in europe australia as well all around the while yet australia still faces challenges when it comes to things like power outages slow internet how are you going to close that gap to remain competitive. well we're very focused on all of these things i mean you're quite right as an open try to economy it's very important that we're internationally competitive and across the board across all of the area of public policy we are pursuing a pro growth agenda we are investing of course and all of the necessary
8:26 am
infrastructure to ensure that we can participate competitively in the opportunities of a digital economy we work closely with germany for example on the industry four point zero. standard and pursuing opportunities between germany and australia to closer together to offer opportunity for business in a strip business is in australia to become part of advanced manufacturing value china around the world so when this does all things that focus on that we are working on and we've continued to work on that look at the situation for the average australian then there are high levels of per capita day it's the banking system for example the commonwealth bank of australia didn't report over fifty thousand cases of money laundering how can you clean up that sector to make sure that risks of a banking crisis are not passed on to the average person that. well
8:27 am
we have a strong and well regulated banking system banks are very profitable a very strong a very stable home and if you look at the situation around the world opposed to the global financial crisis by any standards banks in australia came out of that very very well compared to banks and other positive all prudential regulation you know it's very effective and always specific issues that arise from time to time and when that dude have got to be properly addressed and we've always got to consider carefully you know what improvements can continue to be my two regulatory settings but in an overall sense you know we've got a very strong very effective internationally very competitive banking system and you know compared to europe compared to the united states banks in australia performed very well when this would stress this happened in the context of the global financial crisis mathias cormann australia's minister of finance thank you

a global superpower. offer more on the chinese meeting that is taking place the chinese communist party congress would join here in the studio by dr. she's from the think tank the european council on foreign relations thanks so much for being with us this morning angela now some analysts are saying that she jingping is now the world's most powerful leader do you share that assessment not quiet i would probably call him the most powerful leader i don't believe. he's president of the united states but also. i think the rationale behind the that analysis that president she is now the most powerful leader is that the u.s. is withdrawing from the world stage to some degree that president trump in the u.s. is pursuing a more isolationist policy while can while china continues to expand its global influence how is an emboldened china projecting its power internationally.
8:32 am
regionally and internationally i would say regionally we see it in particular because often china's interests in. the east china sea its territorial interests and also in terms of trade in fact because ofttimes withdrawal from the p.p.a. the trans-pacific partnership agreement china is trying already now to step into that vacuum globally i believe china will use its increased power everywhere it can and everywhere where it will serve its interests starting from latin america. africa and even talk to euro so china is very global stage economically getting involved in all parts of the world we're right in its in its neighborhood in its region is as you say we're looking at a selfie at a north korea that is a huge problem particularly for the united states but also for north korea's
8:33 am
neighbors including china could china as north korea's most important trading partner solve the north korean crisis if it wanted too. if it wonder tour especially the west believes china can solve that problem the problem though is that china does not want to solve the same problem us a west us meaning for china the. nuclear threat is of course they are but it is not its primary interest to get rid of new nuclear weapons its primary interest is to keep stability on the korean peninsula and father needs to support the north korean regime at least to some degree so that the regime would not collapse for china north korea is not least also a buffer zone between china and the u.s. so these these are china's primary interest even though we have seen now china becoming much tougher on north korea so there is a shift in what can be seen as china losing its patience with with can young girls

school president xi and what's happening inside china in the communist party which present she took over five years ago the respect elation the communist party was beginning to lose its grip on power to some degree has that changed in the person five years yes it has definitely changed in the past five years and she has been the main reason for that how much power he eventually has remains to be seen and the party congress that happen is happening now is actually a key event to show how much power you have people always said he's as powerful as mounds of dong. we will see now whether he will be called he will be named a leader. of dong was we will see if. thought as his own thoughts will be included in the party constitution we will see if he can place his allies into the highest position of government and so on and so forth so these
8:35 am
couple of days will be quite crucial in order to answer that question so president xi is clearly putting his stamp on party the communist. he as it were now china is facing a number of challenges as he mentioned president xi in his speech slowing economic growth one thing but he focused very much also on growing social economic inequality within china how is she going to address those challenges he has to address these challenges because they have been a presence and he took all the pot actually five years ago quest said no the problem is how fast will reforms. implemented and how deep will they call the biggest problem in and implementing a comic reforms is so reduce the cantarell off the state namely and state owned enterprises and he you know we know that he has been most reluctant to let go.
8:36 am
i'm a little bit skeptical off any kind of breakthrough in terms of economic reforms. stansell from the european council on foreign relations thank you very much thank you. turning now to northeastern nigeria where eight years of islamist insurgency has left tens of thousands dead and more than two million people displaced the nigerian army has claimed a series of victories against the militants of boko haram but security is park area and the humanitarian situation remains dire as part of our special series on hunger in africa our correspondent adrian creech traveled to the city of run in borno state it's one of the region's most severely affected by the ongoing conflict. it's the rainy season here in northeastern nigeria former gold has come out dispraise fields in preparation for planting the new seed crop. i think when i'm.
8:37 am
gone he has to be careful not to stray too far out. he always stays within sight of the town of ron. we've had to abandon our out of fields because of course it's safer here but there's not enough land. it's been a while since gone he has been able to plant anything at all. last year he lost count of how many days his family had nothing to eat and he's not optimistic about the coming year either. you know. this will be a poultry harvest i have two wives and nine children to feed normally i need at least forty sacks of millet to make ends meet but look at this country now i was lucky that my grandfather left me this land my own fields are too far away. and.
8:38 am
militias keep watch over a roughly five kilometer span around iran. but the poorly equipped local troops can only provide limited protection for farmers like goni. we've patrolled the area day and night. with up on. when we run into boko haram we fight. either we kill them or they'll kill us wonder how to build so i'm not afraid of them even at night if we see lights will go out to inspect. the consequences afoul of fields are visible across the area. malnourishment. people dying from diseases that could normally be treated quite easily. and in the rainy season washed out roads limiting the amount of help aid organizations can
8:39 am
provide. this is a protection crisis which has gradually turned into a food security and a nutrition crisis so very fragile situation we are at the very peak of the lean season waiting and hoping that their livelihood inputs and the agriculture support providing farmers with seeds and tools and fertilizers starting in june is going to lead to a harvest that is going to have an impact on the overall situation on the ground. but not everyone is optimistic agricultural expert gumbos critical of the government's inadequate response he's calling for more support for farmers as well as sustainable food supplies. you might give the people the seed but then if you do not give them food the seed you are given to them will ultimately be used
8:40 am
for food because when you give hungry money for example ten kilograms of millet. go to your farm lands and then in the house he has two wives are now about seventeen grand and that's a crime for hunger. tell me the money that will have the hot not to give that ten kilograms of millet to be crowned it immediately to be met in to put it to give to the boys and then he for goes the farm. as long as the fighting continues farmer goni alba is certain food scarcity will continue. most of his neighbors don't have the means to prepare their fields during the rainy season this means yet another year of being dependent on food donations. goni is lucky to at least have enough money for fertilizer all he wants is to be able to provide for his family again.
8:41 am
forty years ago this month left wing militants force militant forces height forced a high checked an aircraft to land at the mogadishu airport the terrorists had links to the german red army faction also known as the bottom mind off group throughout the nine hundred seventy is the bottom line haul waged a war against the west german state takes a look back at that moment in history. october thirteenth one thousand nine hundred seventy seven west germany watched the actions of leftwing terrorist group the red army faction in horror weeks earlier the r.a.f. had kidnapped business executive hans. hoping to blackmail the government into trading his release for terrorists and last bada and gudrun and slain. on that october day they received some assistance a four person palestinian commando two women and two men hijacked a live tons of passenger plane called the luns huet their demand the release of eleven arre of terrorist imprisoned in west germany for the eighty hostages
8:42 am
a five day odyssey began their journey including to rome monaco dubai and aden. in south yemen the hostage takers shot lufthansa pilot. the last stop on the horror trip was the mogadishu airport in somalia no other country in the world would allow the hijacked plane to land then west german chancellor helmut schmidt was forced to make the most difficult decision of his political career west germany refused to cave in to blackmail how many people would have to pay for this with their lives at that point in time he didn't know he gave the go ahead for the elite commando team g s g nine to free the hostages the rescue operation was on october eighteenth at midnight and lasted seven minutes three hijackers were killed one female kidnapper
8:43 am
injured and all hostages survived. that same night the r.a.f. terrorists committed suicide in stuttgart saddam heim prison and godmamma survived her suicide attempt with heavy injuries. one day later the murdered body of hans ma . was found. the hijacked jet the lone two it flew until two thousand and eight when it retired at the brazilian airport. in two thousand and seventeen germany bought the jet at scrap value and brought it back this was a meaningful gesture for the former hostages. had been. i don't only have negative feelings and association with alonso you have to remember what that plane achieved during the five days of the abduction it flew up and down again and again even though it was on its last drops of fuel don't forget that alonso had also made
8:44 am
an extreme emergency landing. the fact that the restored airplane will be placed in a museum also means a lot to the former lance and copilot you're going feet or and stewardess company. it is a symbol of the german state's first test of strength against a terrorist group and the state one. or more on the story i'm joined now by and full of inc oh she's from the center for contemporary history thanks for being with us this morning in a oh it's been forty years since the murder of. the suicides of most of the remaining members of the bottom line whole gang what is this debate about that chapter in history still so polarizing in germany today well i guess actually in order to understand this episode in history you have to go a bit back further back because actually at the roots of all this is the student movement off nine hundred sixty eight which was not a german at the saw it but action international event or development so some people
8:45 am
took their radicalization which was which actually ended in the ari if doing the hijacking and another terrorist attacks and others chose to follow parties like the green party which is now a negotiating about into the government so i get this this was kind of a crossroads in german history and that's why it's still so important if we look back it was a militant movement was it was regarded as terrorism and still is in retrospect we're now dealing with terrorism in a slightly different form do you see any parallels between the terrorism forty years ago the germany experience and the terrorism we're experiencing today well i see two parallel one of course is hijacking airplanes which was repeated in a way in a different way but at the same time repeated and in the september eleventh attacks because we know all of us working in the media you probably know better than i do that any episode in an airplane in the in air fare always causes maximum attention
8:46 am
by media so it's the airplane and then of course. it's media attention terrorists always gaining as much as attention as they can get the german president. he's due to give address later on today marking the fortieth anniversary of the events. rounding the bob hope line a gang what can he say to make those events for decades ago relevant to a modern audience well i can't imagine what he's going to say which is that he is going to still have a story of success which is that german authorities failed when they had this attack on the munich olympics in one hundred seventy two and they had a great success ending the hijacking additional in september nine hundred seventy seven so he will probably tell us that that we took the right way in fighting
8:47 am
a heart fight against terrorism and that this is what we can endure and still learn from from him which meant today you know report we saw that the aircraft from that hijacking mogadishu is being brought back does it strike you as appropriate to bring back an old aircraft to act as well morial to a terrorist incident so long ago why is that needed i personally think that it's a good idea to bring the plane back because. it would be a waste not having it here when we can just. return it to germany at this point but there were you know the decisive question is what are we going to do with it we can't just leave it as it is obviously but we also can turn it into exactly what it was in one thousand nine hundred seventy seven so the question is what are we going to do there are we going to have for you next months which i think is rather difficult because it would bring people in situations that are not really. that
8:48 am
