8:05 am
out what do you make of these statements. well it's quite interesting how different donald trump in the white house reacted to this incident compared to the recent mass shooting in las vegas when non muslim american killed fifty eight people. that time and las vegas happened the white house said that this is not the time for a political discussion when calls for stricter gun controls came up they said this is a time for mourning this time donald trump wasted no time to turn this into a political issue he criticized the democrats and blamed them for what he called the lax immigration rules and called for the abolishment of this so-called green caught lottery as we've just heard interesting point of course is that lottery was introduced as the result of a bipartisan effort and was signed into law by
8:06 am
a republican president george bush so it's not quite clear. on that front was aiming at it was certainly not the truth again he was throwing red meat to his base really and he continued to do so by calling the suspect an animal saying he would send him to guantanamo and calling for the death penalty ok so a very emotive response from the president to a lot of talk already about about security and immigration possible changes there is it clear yet what sort of policy response we can expect from the federal government. it's not really clear one of the things that donald trump called for in a flurry of for tweets on tuesday and wednesday was that he wanted extreme whetting vetting procedure the point is that already the vetting procedures are quite tight and general kelly the chief of staff and former homeland security
8:07 am
secretary of donald trump said just a few days ago that those procedures had been tightened so not quite sure what should come out of that and as far as other measures like ending this diversity lottery or other reforms of immigration is concerned i'm not quite sure if donald trump has the votes for that in congress in particular in the senate where the republicans have a very small minority and donald trump made many enemies even on the republican side some not quite sure he will get what he wants now police have been piecing together more details about the attack what more can you tell us about the investigation. well police now say that apparently the suspect had connections to people who were under investigation for suspected terrorism but he himself never really was in conflict with the authorities with the exception of a few fines for traffic violations he worked as
8:08 am
a truck driver and later then as an driver but he never really made it in the united states and that apparently caused a lot of anger and made him very angry people who knew him including a mom said that he was increasingly radicalized and we heard that he had ninety videos of this so-called is that mixtape on his mobile and follow instructions from the states for conducting such an attack so there is a clear connection but he still seems to be a lone wolf that's at least what we know even though it was back man is also being questioned right now but we don't know if he's a witness or another suspect crossan thank you very much the cost in phenomenon there in washington and staying in the united states police in the state of colorado are searching for the suspect in a deadly shooting at a wal-mart store where at least two men and one woman have been killed authorities
8:09 am
say the gunman entered the shopping center in thornton just north of denver and appeared to shoot people at random witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots and that sent customers fleeing for the exits but he also hinted and were later escorted out by police. police spokesman has made a statement about the shooting here's what he said. witnesses indicated that there was an adult male that entered that southern doorway and just began randomly shooting into a group of people. witnesses said that they observed that the suspect then fled the area in a red mitsubishi mirage four door hatchback. at this time the suspect remains at large. on joined now by mackenzie a keeper reporter for c.b.s. four news in denver colorado she's in sorenson and has been at the crime scene as

well as at the police department mckenzie thanks for talking with us the shooter is still on the run as we just heard there must be a huge police operation to find him now. absolutely reporters who were early is this program have. more of a police presence. early quickly now to find its shooter and that is so that if he didn't resist it a quarter of the current and they do say they don't have the life plate of the vehicles that. is needed to see you know where exactly this person may be i am not from. headquarters and they have. what it is it has a police department from denmark that are just spending a lot of time interviewing each of those witnesses what people call him a people star is even situated could possibly have any information about that and i
8:11 am
don't we did all that he is on the run right now and police say that they do believe he is still on so definitely people in the area are a little bit and saying ok a dangerous and ongoing situation mckenzie the shooter still on the run there do we know what might be behind this shooting. we don't right now store employees have that they have to if they know of at this time that i thought of it seemed to be completely random they said that when you told them that you're not sure we walked into the mall mart take the guns and i mean it just walked out it did but. they didn't ask to be said any of the and if they were in a customer that wanted isn't going to don't want to be thought out that it isn't any information believe them they don't they continue to look into to try to figure out what exactly that motive was. mackenzie a key for report for c.b.s. four news in denver colorado thank you now to some of the other

it is one of the lawmakers a suspected to give evidence arrived in madrid on wednesday evening and was escorted from a police station pro spanish unity activists gathered there and called her a coup instigator as she left the station called power. catalan is deposed president carter's pushed him up is likely to remain in brussels where he's sought legal representation but all fourteen of the regional officials removed by the spanish government face possible charges of rebellion and so this. this banner shows jailed cuts alone independence activists hadi sanchez and hadi quick shot the message is clear help cut to the nia savior. what's happening now in the region is stark the spanish government is arresting people connected to the concert lonia independence movement and charging them with serious crimes like treason sedition and rebellion ousted considine president carlos predicament meanwhile is hiding out

in brussels saying he will only go to madrid if he's guaranteed a free trial at least one barcelona resident had strong words for the former regional leader when you're going to go to new york and i think he needs to show his face instead of running off to a foreign country and he should tell his face that the people here are standing up for him so he should come and show his face to. prison walls lawyer says there is a high chance he would be arrested if he set foot in spain. he won't go to madrid and i made an offer that he could be questioned here in belgium it is possible i don't know if he will do it but it is possible i had in the past similar cases where the suspect was being questioned in belgium. the. entourage. other ministers who also fled to belgium have returned to face the music it's now a countdown to see what madrid will do in pleased to mass case next. let's cross
8:15 am
over to barbara baseballs now in brussels she's been covering the story from there and from barcelona good morning good morning barbara let's start with carlos push demand is there any chance that he will make his way to madrid for this hearing as far as we know terry he wasn't on the last flight to madrid last night and he certainly isn't on the morning flight so he intends to stay here more or less it also goes to show that he's open to a website here that's called president dot exile dot you case of he still considers himself to be the catalan president and he wants to sort of garner the public attention more newspapers more headlines more journalists to sort of foster his cause and the opinion here is split about whether he is already the total political loser many people call him
8:16 am
a coward all whether he can still somehow create enough diversion in catalonia to sort of state his case in stick with it well if color's pushed him on to staying in belgium why have his fellow lawmakers not stuck with him why are they going to face the music in madrid. his own exe government is split about what to do some as we have seen have gone back and say we have to go to court and make our case that's what many many people regard as the honorable way and the just like would say we are you know politically in the on the back foot here we don't want to we want guarantees for his safety in spain we want a fair trial and it just a lot of what you might call political propaganda that emerges from demond and they are trying to sort of stay away from this ensued vine's the whole storm from brussels and it is
8:17 am
a very uncomfortable position for the belgian government of course he is the most unwanted and invited guest possible because of course he does find some friend was aflame there secessionists and so he is stirring up trouble in his guest country in the belgian government the prime minister would want him gone rather today then tomorrow w.'s barbara baseball there in brussels thank you very much. you're watching did i mean there's still to cull getting to the top in ancient rome the highest tier of the coliseum has reopened after years of restoration work no gladiators there anymore but we'll find out whether the view gets the stock. markets around the world are holding their breath today for an important announcement from washington has more thank you terry yes today u.s. president donald trump is due to announce his pick for the new leader of the
8:18 am
federal reserve now is he the man the new man at the helm of the world's most important central bank if you believe an increasing number of reports he well he that picture should be right here right now is the power he has been a fed governor since twenty twelve he's a centrist on monetary policy and is known as a pragmatic and down to earth official with both private sector and government experience the head of the u.s. federal reserve is the most powerful central banker in the world some past fed chairman have even attained new cult status like alan greenspan he opened the money floodgates and sent equity markets into a feeding frenzy it led to a time of unprecedented growth fueled by critics. until the bubble burst in two thousand and seven unleashing a global financial crisis greenspan wasn't around anymore it was his successor ben bernanke who had to do the damage control but he kept monetary policy loose the
8:19 am
u.s. economy had gotten used to extremely low interest rates a rapid reversal would have const shocks to the system but it was business as usual under his successor janet yellen at least at first now she's opened the door to gradual rate increases amid stable growth in the us. federal reserve stronger intervention in the economy stands in contrast to the policies of the european central bank which has favored of lighter touch and focuses on inflation the fed reacts to developments in the job market yemen's term ends in february. jerome powell is the man tipped to replace her the former investment banker is a republican and already part of the fed's governing board markets look ready to welcome such a choice he's nomination would signal continuity theoretically stanford university economist john taylor remains a candidate but his chances are slim analysts caution that he might be quick to
8:20 am
tighten policy janet yellen would normally be expected to serve a second term but because she was appointed by former president barack obama that is out of the question for the current white house by replacing a fed chairman only after one term president donald trump looks set to break another tradition. colleague last last you've been in the u.s. for a long time reporting on wall street and on the fed which are on par will be a good choice i would say he's definitely a solid choice is a very safe choice as we just heard he's been on the order of fed governors for five years he has some experience he is an interesting choice in us much as he does not have any formal training in monetary policy is a monetary it cannot mix he's from the private sector but i mean as i said he's been on the board of governors for a while he has gained a lot of experience and if you listen to what his colleagues the other fed governors have said about him he seems to be
8:21 am
a consensus maker he seems to be experienced enough for the job so it's definitely a safe choice you said that he's been in the private sector in the public sector he's had some real jobs what kind of policy a different policy could we expect from him it's interesting leigh enough he will not really change policy at all if you look at his voting record over the last couple of years the last five years that has been on the board he has never once dissented from janet yellen always voted with her whether that was for keeping interest rates low and of course as we know pretty much zero percent for a very long time he has also voted with her when they started raising interest rates slowly he has voted for monetary easing for all these things so i cannot see any way fed policy will change with drone policy the hell that's what markets expecting as well the world. why i mean if there's no big got to be it
8:22 am
isn't i'm not going to be a big change why is trump replacing the first place is a trump it's just a trump overlay he has said for the longest time that janet yellen is actually still in the running and he does actually like her which is the opposite of what he had said usually during the campaign when he was running for president everybody knows janet yellen has been doing a very good job. and as we've also heard it is tradition for american presidents over the last couple of decades to reappoint effect chairman even if he was originally put in place by a president from the opposing party bush did that with greenspan and obama did that with bernanke it for trump it seems it was more important now to just leave his mark in just get a trump person in place than it was actually about policy changes that's surprising is it he drops going to announce his choice later this afternoon is there any chance that it's going to be more paul was looks pretty solid now after what we
8:23 am
just recently heard but with trump of course there's always surprises and he has in the last couple of days really been all over the board here all over the map he said yellen is definitely a contender and ironically he even said john taylor would be in the running he likes him too even though john taylor also a member of the fed is standing policy wise for the exact opposite of what drawn powell and janet yellen have stood so for us so once again this is really trouble this is not about policy he doesn't know much about it to begin with this is just to put his person in and surprise the world. thank you very much for this come. now an explosion in a coal fired power plant in the northern indian town of shock killed twenty two people and left sixty of the severely injured and the victims were hospitalized with severe burns the death toll could still rise apparently a pipe exploded and covered workers in the burning. coal producing almost two hundred thousand megawatts of power for india more than gas diesel nuclear i'm
8:24 am
going to a bull's combined a five hundred megawatts unit was only operating on a trial by snow and yet is unfortunately the world leader in industrial accidents and this is from your business news for the time being now a triumph for major league baseball houston astros and terry has more on that thank you that's right a big day for america's big game the astros took down the l.a. dodgers five one on wednesday night to close out the world series four games to three in a series punctuated by wild extra inning encounters game seven was a relatively quiet affair you know astro's exploded with five brothers in the first two innings george springer was the hero as he hit a home run for a fourth consecutive game from there the astros held houston to just one run to seal the championship as fans had waited fifty five years to win their first ever title and were ecstatic as the team's maiden at the team's maiden success.

now moving on to european soccer in the champions league it was a tough night for german sides are the light six path to the knockout stage got more difficult after they were defeated by porto three one dortmund meanwhile are on the brink of elimination after drawing one one at home to cypriot side up well rafael guerrero opened the scoring in the first half netting on his first start back after a long term injury well even the score in the second half through macau take and don't win didn't have an answer taught him hotspurs defeat of real madrid keeps the black and yellow live just there. now when you're in rome you can do is poor romans used to because the top tiers of the coliseum have just been reopened to the public they were the cheap seats for the lowest social class these days visitors go more for the views than for the latter glad it

gladiatorial combat but so far they've given it a thumbs up. getting to the top floors of the coliseum means climbing lots of steep stairs but it's worth the effort the views of the arena and the city are treat. the top sides with saying all different perspectives all the while so i really really enjoyed it if if if it's those of our father played out for you recommended . the fourth and fifth tears are where the pour used to sit in the days of ancient rome on wooden benches. the senators and the wealthy had much better views from the lower tiers they sat on marble. archeologists in the excavations falling like at the bones of chicken bones because they stayed here all day long from morning to sunset so they brought the food from
