president trump heads for hawaii before barking a tour of asia tensions over north korea are likely to dominate the trip the day after the u.s. troop warplanes over the korean peninsula and how to limit the effects of climate change experts and activists gathered in the german city of bonn to work out how to implement the paris climate accord we find out what's at stake. hello i'm on with achievement great to have your company a spanish judge is expected to issue an international arrest warrant for ousted got a dandy deprived disputable and today earlier she joined eight members of the deposed counted on government after they responded to questions at the national court in madrid they may be charged with sedition mean want to do while still in
11:02 am
brussels we talk to our correspondents there and in barcelona in just a bit but first this update. they use whatever they cute to make noise and bustle lonna. the protests came after a spanish judge ordered past members of the deposed catalan cabinet detained pending a potential trial the former government figures turned up in madrid to answer questions about catalonia push for independence. after receiving the news that former had the site catalan president calloused pushed more and called the jailing a serious mistake and demands that their release. it is a grave attack on democracy. imprisoning political leaders who have ample citizen support is an act that violates the basic principle
11:03 am
of democracy. the leader himself was supposed to appear in court in madrid and the spanish state prosecutor wants him arrested. when someone doesn't appear after being cited by a judge to testify in spain or in any other in your country and arrest warrant is issued it's a duty to answer to the summons putsch demands lawyers says he will cooperate with both spanish and belgian authorities. before. and he can defend against this extradition. exception. in warrant. the fusion mission. outside the supreme court in madrid lawyers representing catalan leaders pushed months no show would have fact the other defendants.
11:04 am
we want to analyze whether it will be beneficial or detrimental but it is going to have an effect that's for sure. despite his passion and support in barcelona pushed months refusal to come before the court in madrid is expected to hurt his case. they stand at the very latest from our correspondents barbara with in brussels and charlotte chisholm bill in barcelona shirt let me start with you a big chunk of the former catalonian cabinet has been jailed what are people there thing about this. this is come as a huge blow to pro independence supporters last night we saw thousands of people on the streets the protest was very peaceful people were incredibly angry there is no doubting that they were chanting that calamus push one is still colors push one is still their president they were saying that those who are now in jail are political prisoners they said that these people were elected democratically and that they
11:05 am
have been put in prison for doing exactly what they were elected to do which is put in place moves towards independence now people had fears that jail over the long term was something that these men and women were facing but i think nobody here really expected them to go to prison as fast as they did no one quite expected that the judge would immediately send them to prison and deny them bail so there are a lot of a lot of stand people here on the streets today and barbara in graphics card just for jim was we heard in our report call the imprisonment an attack on democracy what more did he have to say. of course he said that this is a totally poor little trial that the people are political prisoners and taken because madrid taking interest because madrid doesn't agree with the whole direction that the cuts long government was taking which is completely clear however want to push them on and his followers and of course is from the cabinet
11:06 am
almost to say is that they had been warned that they were in clear breach of the spanish constitution and that they obviously were in clear breach of the spanish law and that is the other side of the thing however from what pushed him and said here in belgium it becomes quite clear what his line of defense is going to be he will argue and his lawyer confirmed that he will argue that this is politically motivated that his human rights and his rights to democracy and democratic expressions are infringed upon when he is put in jail for those and when he is then extradited to spain for those things that he did politically in spain so that's his side of the story now talking about extradition barbara a spanish judge is expected to issue an international arrest warrant for what would that mean could
11:07 am
the belgian policeman just catch him and send him back. no it's a process it's the beginning of a process first when the rest warrant that that we've been waiting for since last night arrives here in brussels and has to be translated probably into french and spanish and then. belgium court will look at it and say whether it is justified whether it's right and legal but that's a formal process however then which one has the right to talk to a belgian junjun to sort of make his case and then he in the next step peel against this arrest warrant and then the whole legal and judicial process starts off sort of checking the legalities off it and of course. his defense that this might be a infringement of his human rights and so this is something that will at least take to christmas or whatever on the other hand which the most loyal already said that he was willing to sort of deliver him self into the hands off the belgian police
11:08 am
they don't necessarily have to put him in jail they can put him under surveillance or they can just tell him to stay in a certain apartment or place and not move from there they can take his passport away and that's it so it depends will see how hard they will be on him and shot of people there resentful about would you want decision to stay on in brussels given so many of his colleagues are now sitting in jail. there are a small group of people his supporters who are a little bit resentful yes some feel that he's a captain fing a sinking ship that he is at banning this independence movement and that he should face the music alongside his other former dismissed cabinet members and face the spanish court there are others though i must say they appear to be the large majority of people that we've spoken to who still back in one hundred percent even though he is in brussels they say that he's doing the right thing that it's a smart move that of course he should want to get the support from european leaders
11:09 am
and ultimately they don't think that he belongs behind bars they think that he has done nothing wrong and should be a free man. shonagh as simple in buffalo and barbara bizzle in brussels thank you both very much. turning now to syria where state media is reporting that government troops have cleared so-called islamic state from the eastern city of dead exude the city was the last major stronghold of the militants in syria now reports say the troops are now in full control of the city near the border with iraq troops broke a seizure by the militants in september and had been advancing since then the city had been divided between government backed troops and islamic state twenty three years russia's been supporting syrian troops with airstrikes. u.s. president donald trump is said to embark on his first official tour of asia tensions over north korea's nuclear threat look likely to overshadow the trip trumps national security team has said north korea should be returned to
11:10 am
a list of countries the u.s. believes sponsors terrorism meanwhile on thursday the u.s. few supersonic bombers over the korean peninsula for military exercises north korea condemned the move think america is seeking to ignite a nuclear war. journalist stephen barrett joins me now from the south korean capital seoul stephen a what do you make of these u.s. bombers flying over the korean peninsula is this being viewed there as a show of force before trans arrival in the region. this is not exactly routine these types of signs of force are they do take place from time to time but they're never random they're always they always have some kind of objective in mind and i think probably the dominant perceptional review these are meant as a sole force to show north korea extends to all of us military power before trump visits the us is still the dominant military power and age there and every once in
11:11 am
a while they make a move like this to remind north korea of that and perhaps to as a kind of precursor to trump's arrival here in korea next week but as we all know north korea objects very strongly to these types of sort of forest taking place so close to its territory and they accuse the united states of being the real aggressor in the region and the u.s. of being the possible force that could cause war over here that in fact let us think that north korean state agency described as incurably mentally deranged tell us more about their reaction to this latest move as you said north korea is very unhappy. they are and if you look really closely at north korean propaganda what they always say sometimes gets lost in the western media reports they do not tend to make over threats their regressive language is always if we are attacked if you dare breach our territory if you imprint on our sovereignty so in a way these types of really heavy shows of u.s.
11:12 am
military force kind of play into north korean propaganda in that they allowed the north koreans to fifty us as the aggressor and to depict the u.s. as this force that is risking war and here also in south korea i think there's long been this sense that north and south korea if left to their own devices couldn't manage a situation here and prevent war but trying to be seen as a kind of wild card he still mostly untested on the world stage and nobody's really sure what he might do and so for that reason i think a lot of people will be watching his upcoming visit asia as it's first and of course containing north korea and its nuclear ambitions is very important but the trump administration can we expect any new developments during this visit on this issue i think any new developments will probably be unlikely it's not likely that it's during their meeting trump and south korean president will come up with any real new agreements or anything usually what they
11:13 am
do with these types of summits is they affirm their alliance and know have meetings and still say that they're on the same page and they genuinely do agree on the urgency of addressing north korea's growing nuclear arsenal but as to whether or not they'll come out of this meeting with any tangible changes that's less than likely we can expect a lot of photo opportunities and a lot of very cooperative language about how the two sides are on the same page with. general steven blum we can still thank you very much for that assessment thank you. listen to a look at some other stories making news around the wild pakistan's ousted prime minister nawaz sharif has appeared in court to face corruption charges the judge's order to restrike to resume later this month his links to offshore companies revealed in the panama paper scandal led to his dismissal from office and indictments for graft. the u.n. has called authorities to stop a humanitarian emergency at the australia funded immigration camp in papua new

is definitely out power will be the next chairman of the u.s. federal reserve pending senate confirmation so who is that as a fed board member since twenty twelve powell has in the past most is supported the policies of his predecessors and yellen and is expected to remain cautious about raising interest rates but he will oversee efforts by the central bank to unwind its measures to stimulate the economy brought in after the two thousand and eight financial crisis. u.s. president donald trump considered five names including current fed chair janet yellen before settling on powell who has served as a fed governor since two thousand and twelve a soft spoken centrist pals name has been circulated as the top contender for over a week i'm both honored and humbled by this opportunity to serve our great country if i am confirmed by the senate i will do everything within my power to achieve our

congressionally assigned goals of stable prices and maximum employment. since two thousand and twelve palace supported yemen's general direction in setting monetary policy and in recent years has shared her cautious approach in the years since the global financial crisis and our economy has made substantial progress toward full recovery by many measures were close to full employment and inflation has gradually moved up toward our target our financial system is also without doubt far stronger and more resilient than it was before the crisis power will seek a balance between regulations and market conditions he stated recently that more rules and regulations are not always the best solution to problems in financial markets still after eight years of steady progress financial markets could use the continuity. check markets have reacted to the news as often as a correspondent standing by in frankfurt for as an investor take in the

nomination of paul. they've taken they've taken it positively i know most people would have liked to see janet yellen be able to continue but this is the next best thing he supported her policies as we've just heard he's a relative moderate and people also see him as being able to build consensus around the table and that's also important especially if unexpected events happen and the fed has to react to them and most people are sure unexpected events will happen they always do during the term of a fed chair something i think a lot of people here in europe and in germany are uneasy about is the prospect of his maybe supporting easing up on banking regulation. other than banking regulation you reckon that paul the policy of the fed will change. but people don't expect that at the moment because he's been supportive so far but if
11:18 am
janet yellen indeed not only loses the chair in february but also resigns from the term she could stay on as a board member but if you resigns then there are four vacant seats to fill by the president and if donald trump puts in people with a different monetary policy outlook then it would be up to powell to either contain them or to moderate and given a little so we could see could see a change in monetary policy in the next couple of months in years not certain but a possibility will he stay away i will come back to you a bit later in the show. apple's new flagship i phone ten hits the shops the company announced a profit of ten point seven billion us dollars mind you that is for just three months from july to september the news sent apple stock flying shares hit and other all time high giving the company a market cap of around nine hundred billion dollars making it the most valuable company on apple hopes the new i phone model will also fly off the shelves that is

in the christmas season even though it's the most expensive yet the basic model retails for around one thousand dollars. and let's go back to early vance and frankly you're there in france. this hype as usual. around the new apple product and is the hype around the stock of the stock market is it justified. well. i was at the apple store just a little while ago and people were lining up in droves trying to get in and be among the first to get the phone so even at that healthy price of around two thousand dollars and the top model selling well over that people are willing to pay that money and here at the stock market it's being received very well especially tim cook's the c.e.o.'s remarks that he sees the christmas season which we're now

in the middle of already as being probably the best quarter in the company's history with new records being set and that's really what's behind the market valuation about both when you look at the share price compared to profit picture it's high the share price is high but it's not over the top if you will when you consider the profitability of the company but nine hundred billion u.s. dollars of market capitalization is nearly like the g.d.p. of india needa can a single company really be booked be worth that much or are we in financial lalala and. not financial lala land people have been asking that since apple was worth half or a third of that how much farther can it go shareholders are willing to pay those prices i think what can what one can ask under a systemic. look at looking at it is whether apple is doing the right thing with working conditions and achieving those profits to p word here is working conditions in china still much criticism on that and the tax paying habits hard issue in the

hard by rising sea levels is fiji in the south pacific. now for the first time fiji will be chairing the un climate conference prime minister frank bainimarama will be leading the negotiations environmentalists say fiji is a warning for the world. but fiji has been especially hard hit by climate change because of rising sea levels fiji was the first place in the world where an entire village had to be relocated because of climate change. the bonn meeting aims to flesh out the terms of the twenty fifteen paris climate agreement almost all countries have signed the accord only the u.s. has announced it is pulling out the deal requires that temperatures do not climb by more than two degrees it requires all countries to set their own climate goals it paves the way for billions in aid especially for poor countries but one will be a working conference without big decisions like those made in paris. at first it
11:23 am
sounds pretty unspectacular but what we agreed on in paris in december twenty fifth teen is like a new worldwide law and something like that needs rules of interpretation. but donald trump stated intention to withdraw from the paris accord has cast a shadow over these talks so far other countries do not share his view. the three major storms in the caribbean combined with the u.s. backing out of the paris agreement have increased the feeling of unity among the other countries. many feel it is now time to take action the results of climate change are becoming more and more dramatic and not only in fiji. and from what i have fun and in from the japanese environment jesse joins me now from bonn i saw not donald trump's administration announced the u.s. withdrawal from the international climate agreement five months ago how does that
11:24 am
affected the international community in the effort to combat climate change so far . well initially there was some concern over motivation for the other countries but i would say that that quickly turned into if anything increased a determination for the rest of the world to continue to move forward on climate protection also given that the effects are being so felt this year for example in the form of extreme weather that has really rocked the globe but experts do say that in order to prevent this two degree celsius temperature rise that we have just a ten year window to not only peak in greenhouse gas emissions but actually complete the transition to low or no carbon economies and the emission reduction commitments as they are take us to about three degrees so there's certainly a sense of urgency around this issue and for some regions of the world more than for others and we have the german environment minister hendrik saying this is not going to be a second paris conference what can't participants actually achieve during the next
11:25 am
two weeks. no it's not come twenty one in paris this is what is called a working conference meeting the delegates are coming together to hash out this rulebook on implementing the paris agreement and there are some really important aspects to this such as transparency and accountability so how can we be sure that countries are living up to their commitments that these commitments are measurable and comparable so we're talking about oranges and oranges and not oranges and apples also a big component of this conference is how businesses and local governments can already begin to translate these emission reduction goals into the real world and in fact there's a lot of potential there for quicker cuts and for increasing that ambition to make sure that we don't overshoot the true degree temperature rise now fiji as we have now reported from the countries most affected by rising fear levels what a florida country's expecting from the summit. the the literal existence of fiji is
11:26 am
threatened by rising sea levels due to human caused climate change which is one reason that fiji was selected to hold the presidency for this conference and part of the thinking behind that is to drive home the urgency of the issue i mention the two degrees limit how we're heading for three degrees currently so they in fact these small island states in the pacific for example would require the lower limit of one point five degrees so i think one of the messages were on the same boat climate change no knows knows no borders so let's get paddling. and fun and interesting debbie's in my mind just thank you very much to sport on your apology action on testing one german science enjoyed a successful match to non more so than cologne who secured an impressive victory on the german side won the game five two of their first win in the competition this season that means they still have a chance to progress to the knockout stages so to head to berlin who also secured
