12:01 pm
you're on the ropes if. you use all. speak to our correspondent in tokyo about how trump plans to bolster support from allies to face up to north korea's nuclear ambitions also coming up travis due to meet with the japanese families of people of ducted by north korean agents and decades ago we have a report on one woman's story of her kidnapped sister. and a tweet lands an american journalist behind bars in zimbabwe she's been charged with insulting president robert mugabe for calling him a selfish and sick man on twitter. welcome to the program i marry in evanston it's good to have you with us. u.s.
12:02 pm
president donald trump has sought to reassure asian allies of america's resolve in defending them against dictatorial regimes kicking off his marathon tour of asia and japan trump said the united states had the military might to stand good on that promise the president's twelve day tour of five asian nations comes amid heightened tensions over north korea's nuclear and missile program just after arriving trump addressed u.s. troops stationed in japan here's a little of what he had to say. we will never yield never waver and never falter in defense of our people our freedom and our great american flag. we will seek new opportunities for cooperation and comes and we will partner with friends and allies to pursue a free and open in though this if they reach we will seek free
12:03 pm
fair and research trade. well for more we're joined now by our correspondent boston hadzic who's in tokyo so boston we've just been hearing donald trump warning america's enemies not to test its resolve how have these words been received in japan. well if you take the japanese government and the japanese prime minister shinzo aba then that's probably exactly what he wanted to hear because he's of course looking for reassurance affirmation from the united states that they stand firmly behind the commitment towards their allies in asia and also towards or their commitment that they're going to defend these allies in the case of an attack and a case of an attack by north korea for example and president i'll be himself has been very tough when it comes to the north korea issue and he's gotten a lot of support from that if you take for example the election results of the
12:04 pm
elections that were held here a few weeks ago where. scored a landslide victory and his stance on north korea of course played a major role in that now having said that there are also people here are of course afraid that the situation might escalate if you take for example the north korean missile tests two of those missiles flew right over japanese territory and people here are afraid that if the situation escalates and there might be another action from north korea and they're afraid also that they kind of strongman rhetoric that we're hearing from president trump might just be that that little spark that ignites this tinderbox that this nation has become this region has become and might just provoke another action from north korea. and japan would of course being a close neighbor would suffer from from such and from such an action. well the
12:05 pm
threat from north korea will of course fee the key issue during trump's tour of asia it is not the only issue also on the agenda of course is traded donald trump speaking of the need for a free fair and reciprocal trade in the india pacific region one is the japanese here on this. it's no secret that japan wanted. the transpacific partnership this trade deal that comprised twelve nations before the u.s. pulled out that japan wanted this deal to go ahead now then obviously the u.s. pulled out of this pulled out of this agreement because president trump thought it was a bad deal and now he's looking for lateral trade agreement with japan but japan on the other hand is still pushing forward with the eleven remaining nations in the trans-pacific partnership and they're hoping that at some later point maybe they can convince the united states to to join the d.p.p.
12:06 pm
after all convince them of the benefits of such a deal so there will be a lot of discussion on that tomorrow as well apart from north korea when it comes to the formal part of this visit because of course today the visit kicked off very informally with a round of golf and dinner at a steak house prime minister clearly wanting to deepen also the personal relationship to president trump and trying to make trump feel welcome here and feel comfortable here in japan the first stop of trump's asia trip all right boston hardik reporting for us from tokyo thank you. now one of the other issues that don't trump expected to address during his stop in japan is the kidnapping of japanese citizens by north korean agents around one hundred japanese citizens are believed to have been forcibly taken to north korea since the one nine hundred seventy s. relatives of the disappeared are still hoping that some day their loved ones will
12:07 pm
return here's more. every day in his tiny tokyo studio that's more our puts together a very special radio program aimed at a select audience some one hundred japanese citizens believed to have been kidnapped by north korea since the one nine hundred seventy s. presumably to train spies no one knows how many can hear him but he's convinced that for those who can but she has a project offers a lifeline of hope. to people who have managed to come back told us they weren't allowed to speak japanese or sing japanese songs in north korea but some were able to listen to our program and there they heard our language and music that gave them strength to carry on and hope that someday they would come home. or that i was listening to these broadcasts in north korea is strictly prohibited but her tomorrow knows some take the risk and tune in anyway in secret and at night.
12:08 pm
that's why he invites relatives of the disappeared on to the soul to send personal messages to their loved ones one of these is to margie takeshita her little sister nori called vanished forty four years ago she was just eighteen at the time. my mother wanted to meet her at about noon that day to go shopping. but then someone called and said no rico wasn't going to make it. my mother thought she was probably busy with work so she didn't worry. they haven't seen noriko since the family did all they could to find her but it was years before they heard anything then a crucial tip from a north korean disorder nor a call was alive in north korea. that i not going to weeks before she was kidnapped i gave birth to my second child. we don't even have a photo of the two of them together he was born just when not he could disappeared

so every time his birthday comes around it reminds me how long she's been gone for one year than five and now it's been forty four years. like nordic or most of those who were abducted are still missing little is known about their fate but. hasn't given up hope she's convinced that one day she a norty call will be reunited so she comes here every month to let her sister know she hasn't forgotten. do you know erica this is your sister tamagotchi how are you do you have enough to eat i hope you're not sick. it's impossible to know whether noriko has ever hurt her but too much attack ishita will continue to broadcast her dedication she says she can feel that somewhere out there her sister is listening so she. and now to some of the other stories
