government refuses to do. they're a mix of patriots with small children angry citizens and right wing extremist many were demonstrating against an open poland simply against immigration. to religion we have been neither russian ised nor gemini's. got a minute of our new flag has the highest meaning for us. saturday sawfish or celebrations marking the ninety ninth anniversary of poland's independence president spoke at the event but someone else is pulling the strings in warsaw the ruling nationalist conservative law and justice party. we reject all forms of submission and this is what we're doing here we want to poland that is proud independent and strong it's a sentiment welcome among the far right the committee for the protection of democracy also held a demonstration there

a pro european organization but there really was considerably smaller than dots of the nationalists. machine and us you know the two ideologies nationalistic on the one hand and modern on the other their ideas about the future have completely drifted apart and no one is trying to reestablish a connection between the. problem. amid calls for more patriotism from poland's government nationalist sentiment is growing. in one year poland celebrates its one hundred year anniversary and the country is surely not going to celebrate quietly. while joining us now on the line is the head of german public broadcaster radio studio in warsaw the cast and far right groups organize the big march in warsaw today do most of the participants seem to share their extreme views. well it depends a little bit how you would define a far right extremism if such an extremist is

a person that would consider eastland per se as a threat who would say that refugees migrants from islamic countries are. to be summed up as potential terrorists then the vast majority of the participants. should be labeled as extremists and not only participants at this march because these kind of slogans you can hear all over poland if you ask me about organized extremism about these groups sometimes even refer to fresh groups from history then this is still a rather small fraction here in poland and also at the march we have a lot of participants who would say we are not even nationalists we are patriots we love our country but and this is a symptom for poland they would not have a problem to be seen and to march together with those extremists and i don't have a problem with slogans like europe has to be white or was a description of refugees and islam is a kind of troy and horse that is

a danger and a threat for europe ok now they weren't alone there were members of the far right from outside poland also taking part in this annual nationalist march why is that. yeah it seems that poland and the whole region it's not only poland is an interesting place for those who dream about a kind of right wing international movement and indeed there is interest from outside but i wouldn't say that this was the main thing here the main thing here was a kind of poland first if you will poland was the issue and it was interesting that it was expected that richard spencer from the all right movement in the u.s. was expected to be here and as far as when he said he did not come maybe because the foreign ministry here in warsaw some days go issued a statement where they clearly said mr spence and his ideas are not welcome in poland and that is remarkable because the justice governing party the ruling party here not very often so clearly distances itself from such as attitudes.
1:06 am
this march has grown substantially since it began in two thousand and nine how much does that reflect changes in poland landscape in recent years or poland's political landscape has changed dramatically over the last two years it has poland as a whole politically has moved definitely to the right of course the victory of the governing party two years ago is one point the other point here is that we don't have any serious important left opposition neither in parliament nor outside what we have in parliament is another protest group that is even far right a protest party and we have liberal groups liberal parties that governed here for many many years and are discredited in the eyes of many poles were frustrated on who blame them for many things they don't like so there's at the moment no real political turnitin for many many people even for those who would not support such

of poland and hungary but cannot respond to the situation in cup lonia summit of the year the situation came to a head on october the first as catalans went back to vote in what madrid called an illegal referendum they were met with scenes like these. many catalans where i raged madrid's heavy handed approach may well have boosted support for independence . the question i is whether that support has waned and whether separatists will triumph in catalan elections next month. spanish prime minister mariano rajoy wants to convince voters to choose pro unity parties he set to visit barcelona on sunday for the first time since the referendum to launch his party's campaign. u.s. president donald trump and his russian counterpart vladimir putin have reaffirmed their commitment to ending the war in syria in
