a new coalition government go down to the wire also coming up. we'll have exit be a dignified one the pictures are published of robert mugabe after a meeting with the military so what have they decided to do with the press. was the piece is so. five hundred year old masterpiece by leonardo da vinci becomes the most expensive piece of art ever sold at auction so. this incredibly expensive painting. i'm bringing off it's good to have you with us we are watching the clock tonight here in germany the four political parties trying to form the next coalition government face a crucial deadline in. a few hours
11:02 pm
a deadline to iron out their differences and to go into government together failure could mean new elections and the german chancellor said she's confident that there will be a deal tonight but she admits that serious serious differences remain. night has fallen in berlin but for the negotiators here there's still a lot of work to do before they can sign this document a sixty one page draft agreement for exploratory talks they must resolve points of contention like migration climate and transport policy. if we succeed then in this time of great polarization we can accomplish something very important for our country namely that all of us from very very different positions are never the less able to work together for the people of this country. a major political statement and an appeal to the four parties to overcome their differences
11:03 pm
compromise is the word of the day or it's i'm talk today is the day when we can impress people with courage and energy a new solutions. that should also motivate all four parties today to come to the table in the spirit of problem solving guys and not in the spirit of saving face. svava. easier said than done for for weeks now the negotiators have been searching for a consensus well each party sticks to its guns this means that we have to fight for the things that are important climate change a humanitarian asylum policy and an orderly right to asylum the green's top priority is reuniting refugee families who hold limited protected status the same policy is an absolute no go for the c.s.u. . we had this special status in germany and now we feel it simply unsustainable but we still have relatively high numbers of refugees coming in so we maintain our

position that continuing this program is not possible negotiators have until early morning to reach the necessary compromises. and following the talks forces are correspondent for lots of parts she is burning the midnight oil with those coalition politicians getting a lot just so these talks have been going on now for more than what twelve hours and we've been hearing rumors that well there seems to be a bit of a stalemate what have you heard. yes not only appears to be not only a bit of a stalemate but an actual stalemate we've just heard minutes ago that the talks the negotiations have been interrupted for the time being so we're talking about the negotiations across party lines apparently now the parties are meeting with their own members and then hoping to get back to the across party negotiations at some point but the trouble maker here seems to be the very insistent party of merkel's
11:05 pm
conservatives to see as you they've been very reluctant to agree on family reunions for asylum seekers for example they've been reluctant on a bunch of issues regarding migration and it appears that they have been really the troublemakers in the past hours and we have to see if they come along if this is just a strategy to to basically play for their audience for their voters at home to say afterwards we have been ideologically stable we've been trying to hold our promises from the campaign from the election or if this is actual if they if they are serious with that and if they could really interrupt the negotiations in the end of they could make them fail. what happens if these dogs will and what will that mean for the chancellor angela merkel. well there are a number of contentious issues still at this point migration finance climate so if
11:06 pm
these talks end up failing there are a couple of options it could be a minority government led by angola maclin her conservatives by the strongest party that came out of this election eight weeks ago the more likely option though is that there will be a call for snap elections and that will be the first time in post world war two german history that snap elections are called after they don't reach an agreement on a coalition after an election and that would mean for germany while negotiators a saying somewhat of a catastrophe because it could try fodor's to the extremes and for america herself it would be definitely it is because she is a very good strategic negotiator and if she doesn't manage to bring these negotiations to a compromise to a close that would mean a failure for her and it could actually mean that she wouldn't pose as
11:07 pm
a candidate for chancellor again in a new election so she wouldn't have a fourth term as chancellor of germany. all right it looks like it's going to be a very very long and nights our correspondents a lot of parts here in berlin covering those coalition talks which we understand have been interrupted for the time the show a lot to thank you very much although there are new photos tonight of zimbabwe's president robert mugabe the first since tuesday night's military takeover the images show mugabe holding talks with the military there's also a delegation from south africa including jacob zuma who says that the political situation will become clear very shortly now the opposition in zimbabwe has called on mugabe to quit but she is reportedly refusing to step down. these images show robert mugabe meeting zimbabwe's army chief under two south african envoys brought in to mediate at his official residence in harare reports
11:08 pm
claim the longtime president is refusing to step down. but mugabe is under pressure to resign zimbabwe's opposition leader morgan tsvangirai said the president in power since one thousand nine hundred eighty should go quietly in the interest of the country and elections should be called. a transitional mechanism. and that purports the. nature and character of that mechanism. by all national. reforms. and a fair and credible election to be held. rumors have been flying about whether mugabe's wife grace is with him or whether she managed to flee the country before the military action on wednesday grace's ambitions to succeed her husband are said to be behind the current turmoil last week mugabe sacked his vice president the
11:09 pm
army potentially saw this as paving the way for grace to take over the military's actions though have put a stop to her hopes for now. the sacked vice president emerson. is tipped to head a transitional government backed by the military an option the african union said it wouldn't support. if indeed we in the african union are against any violent government overthrow or i've issued a statement saying the army should retreat and return to constitutional order we support the legitimate zimbabwean government and in no case will we accept the forceful seizure of power. to force it with. force. it remains to be seen whether robert mugabe can hold on to his tight grip on power . we're going to have reached crunch phase at the u.n.

climate talks in the german city of bar delegates are trying to draw up a rulebook for implementing the twenty fifteen paris accords now this is a mammoth task involving thousands of negotiators and they are facing a deadline. the climate conference in bonn is a flurry of activity it's scale almost that of a small town with delegates bustling between cafes and events and in the middle of it all politicians are engaged in quiet negotiations over climate policy. figure out of a total of around twenty five thousand people here three or four thousand are involved in the actual negotiations another one thousand are journalists and the rest are occupied with staging the event and helping solve problems through this problems at such a vast sum at the most important thing for journalists is to keep track of the big picture we're always on the move but traversing the sprawling summit area from one
11:11 pm
event to the next has its upsides. we're now on one of the climate summit electro shuttles taking his right from one side of the summit to the other this is going to take his about ten minutes causing no emissions zero emissions at the exact opposite of zooming along the motorway with that powerful fuel guzzling german car we're making slow progress but it's a great opportunity to catch up on some reading. the heart of the conference is here in the delegations building countries have colorful pavilions here where they present information on the climate situation back home and millions of euros of business is also conducted here. this is. because it is fascinating right after paris to see had the character of these climate conferences is changing
11:12 pm
a large portion of the people are here to sign contracts and make deals and network to be able to better implement what's decided here is that since. many countries have already decided to transition from fossil fuels to wind or solar energy for them bond is serving as a market place meanwhile negotiators are discussing the implementation of the paris accord a tiring often late night job. i think you have to focus on getting through these two weeks because. as you have so much to do and usually you don't become aware of the fatigue on the laser. but some are already feeling that fatigue but the conference should soon be over either on friday night or in the wee hours of saturday morning. and anonymous buyer has spent a record some on a work by the renaissance painter at leonardo da vinci a previously the work had changed hands for just a few thousand dollars but that christie's in new york it was
