it has to be. slavery in the twenty first century. story december second on d w. this is d w news live from berlin and breaking news at the top of this hour it could be the end of germany's so-called jamaica coalition efforts by the three major parties to forge a government under chancellor angela merkel have reportedly collapsed merkel's conservative the business friendly f.d.p. and the greens have been trying to overcome major differences on several key issues
12:01 am
those efforts have failed to bring you the latest. also on the show zimbabwe's political crisis deepens president robert mugabe to find a pressure from his on a p.f. party to step down in a live television address to the nation mugabe did not resign saying instead he would preside over a party congress despite earlier being sacked as the head of zanu p.f. his opponents now are threatening protests and peach meant. i must wait or welcome to the show the talks to form a new coalition government for germany appear to have a collapsed the business friendly f.t.p. party has announced it's pulling out of the talks for lack of confidence in the other parties. our correspondent husband is standing by outside the building where
12:02 am
the talks have been taking place and here joins us now for the latest hans let's get right to it what are you hearing about the cause of why this broke down many many hours after the deadline which must have passed. well the entire delegation of the free democrats the look business friendly party walked out of these talks. they face the press and read a statement by its part by the party leader christian. which in essence what he said is that it would be better not to be part of a government than to be part of the wrong kind of government they felt that their issues the things that were important to them were not covered well enough in the coalition talks or in the attempts to form a coalition that have been going on for the last four weeks or more and they did not see any prospect of their interests being in fact met in these discussions and
12:03 am
so they walked out. and it seems that the talks have collapsed it's not clear there's not been any reaction from the other parties they are still withdrawn in the building behind me and are clearly trying to find a position on what they have to do you know how they have to react to this pull out by the three democrats at the moment the talks have collapsed so we're down a party and what is supposed to be the governing majority what will happen to medical now are we close to fresh elections what are the next steps what are the options here. what i suppose the first attempt will be to try and get the free democratic to come back i imagine there's a possibility that this is a sense of a kind of game of brinksmanship brinkmanship that they have pulled out in order to really emphasize how important they are to all to the. talks and that they are a necessary component of
12:04 am
a possible new government i don't know if that is the case they did not take any questions they did not respond to any of the calls of journalists to explain further what they were doing by putting out of these talks so there is a possibility i guess talking in the middle of the night that in some way the free democrats could be persuaded to come back if that is not the case then. there really is no other possibility well there are two or three other possibilities one is that. the party tries to rebuild the grand coalition that has ruled in germany for the past four years that would need cooperation by the social democrats and they have ruled out repeatedly in the last couple of weeks so that does not seem to be a realistic alternative then there's the possibility that i'm going to marco could govern as a minority government leading a minority government that means that for every decision that has to be taken and parliament she needs to find
12:05 am
a separate majority it would be. a very unstable government and it's not clear how far that could last the final possibility is that there might be really new elections fresh elections if that were the case there would happen early in the new year presume but it's very early days yet to make any clear comment about what's likely to happen next now are we necessarily surprised at this outcome these three parties are very far apart on most of the key issues that concern german citizens these days was it always kind of magical thinking that they were going to be able to get together what were some of these issues that were keeping them apart. well the third largest poles apart too obviously were the conservative christian social union that very insistent party of anger marcos christian democrats on the one hand on the right side of the political spectrum and the greens on the left side of the
12:06 am
political spectrum this was the guy that needed to be bridged by these talks and it seems so far that the free democrats were participating and finding some kind of bridging formula between these two poles that there were in the middle between these two poles and we're doing the best in fact to facilitate such such an outcome so it is really quite a large surprise that the freedom of crowds are the ones that have now pulled out of these talks it would have been much less of a surprise of one of the more extreme parties the christian social union the varians or the greens had said that they could not see their way open to finding an agreement really it's a surprise to every or all of service that are here at the moment and it's really quite unclear what is going to happen next. huns bronte standing by for us outside the headquarters where talks for the german coalition government have just collapsed thank you very much for your reporting in our other top stories in bob

the nation and for the welfare of our people not only did mcgarvie not announce his resignation as expected he further pledged to preside over the upcoming zanu p.f. party congress a clear slap in the face to his own party who had given him twenty four hours to resign or be impeached. zimbabwe's main opposition leader morgan tsvangirai said he was baffled by mugabe's failure to step down as were many ordinary citizens. all this week to this week's next and. despite everything that he has done to be with dignity and to just walk away the generals a little bit more. and we just didn't. do that. is so stubborn. with the confusion following mugabe's speech the way forward for zimbabwe suddenly seems
12:09 am
unclear. journalist right and lo has been following the events in harare for us i asked him how people in the capital have been reacting to know about his address. stand at the moment with the speech that was delivered by prison record mugabe about two hours ago live to the nation the i'm not sure what to make of it where basically he's insisting that he's going to preside over the zanu p.f. congress next month and so you know there's a sense of waiting for the next step which is likely to be the impeachment that participate will be instituted immediately at. noon today and then that will be the next step which will be looking it now mugabe's party the zanu p.f. as gathering that month for its congress is mugabe implying that the party congress will be deciding his fate. you know by implication what he was implying was that
12:10 am
he's going to be in charge of the proceedings of that party congress but the reality on the ground and you could obviously sense that from these things he's speeches that he's so detached from what events took place today where you still things that he's in charge but the reality on the ground points to shifting is well within his own political party the president mugabe's really trying to show through bravado of sorts or you can really use you know not in sync with what happening in order to be in the prevailing mood and sentiment within his party where people have moved away from him so basically he's politically isolated socially rejected and the military is is no longer we see him as you saw them moving into to take control of the lever of government so it's a very very difficult position that prisoner but we're going to find themselves in
12:11 am
and it's understandable if you have to show for it all for you fine but one can only wonder following this can be extended what cost you know to the greater good and step in each of them by way yeah. all of us friends very quickly just a few weeks ago it was business as usual now we know that new protests have been announced around zimbabwe so far this has remained relatively peaceful despite the political situation do we think it's likely to stay that way though. i think at the moment it's safe to say that. uppermost consideration for many people but that is not to. sort of you know i think the stakes because obviously we will you know by this statement that president obama got a big a vote today where you've actually in defiance in people saying that look if you want to go down with the fight we'll be able to give him that fight but over survey either open the leaning that might be my friend go down through fire and open see
12:12 am
if we do and so really i think from today judging from those is the statement that president mugabe gave is that he is not going. out without a fight and he is just up the stakes and really you know if the op was seen as well i'm waiting to take him on the war veterans who are afraid there should be protests that are being held on wednesday and the wednesday approaches to come up at the impeachment at this right which you expect to take place on tuesday when parliament resumes sleeping update to a break right in the hall for us in herat i thank you very much thank you for concern is growing over the fate of hundreds of thousands of her hinge refugees who have fled ethnic violence in me and mar for the relative safety of bangladesh on monday germany's foreign minister will join international politicians and man maher to discuss the crisis on his way he visited a refugee camp in bangladesh our correspondent all over salat sent us this report.
