story for you coming up. plus big promises from zimbabwe's incoming president emerson ga-ga says he'll bring democracy and prosperity back to the country but will he deliver. it's a pleasure to have you with us the german president has been speaking with the head of the social democratic party to try and break the deadlock over forming a new coalition government well that's after the collapse of talks last week and we tween chancellor angela merkel's conservatives and two other parties will the leader of the social democrats martin szell's has so far will doubt any possibility of joining a new coalition under chancellor merkel but president of steinmeyer is believed to have pressed him to reconsider his position well headed straight from that meeting

back to his party's headquarters the political correspondent thomas sparrow joins us now from there good to see you thomas so all eyes of course now on the s.p.d. they hold the key for a potential new government but there are rumors that the leader of the s.p.d. martin schultz might be stepping down what are you hearing where you are. well exactly those same rumors leyla but up to now they're only that just rumors without any foundation it is still unclear whether martin shows or whether any other member of the s.p.d. the social democrats will refer to those rumors where we can say for sure is that there is increasing pressure on the social democrats and in particular on martin short to try and revisit their clear position off to the election on september twenty four on september twenty fourth so they had a very bad result they said our position in the next legislative period will be in
6:04 pm
the opposition we are not joining any other grand coalition with anglo merkel and that's a position that they the social democrats have maintained and have repeated even after negotiations to form a new coalition collapsed a few days ago obviously the german president func fired by steinmeier who is also a leading member of the social democrats may have increased the pressure on martin shows to try and rethink his position now martin shows is he talking to the leading leading figures of his party to see what they believe and what the next step should be coming from the social democrats if martin shorts were to resign just for the sake of this argument what that paves the way for the s.p.d. to join a potential coalition with a chance america. not necessarily because the s.p.d. and many within the s.p.d. still like the idea of having martin shows as the leader of the party we must

remember that when he was elected he was overwhelmingly elected as the new leader of the party there were many hopes that he could get a good result he obviously didn't but he is still hoping in the upcoming party conference in the next few days to become again the leader of the party and to lead the party in this next cycle whatever that cycle might be so it is on a clear whether any possible resignation from him if the rumors do have any foundation could actually help the s.p.d. or anyone actually in all this german situation to try and find a solution explain for us if you will thomas why have the social democrats been so opposed to joining a government led by the chancellor. the social democrats were in a grand coalition with the conservatives in the last legislative period and although they did manage to bring forward some of their proposals for example on on
6:06 pm
social justice most of the good word on those successes if you will went straight to angela merkel straight to the conservatives and not necessarily to the social democrats so they see their result on september twenty four as a result of their participation in the grand coalition in the past four years so that's the reason why they said right after the results on september twenty fourth there was no possibility of them joining another grand coalition on and that they saw their position in these next four years i was leading the opposition in the german parliament because they weren't able to materialize their gains from being part of that government thank you so much for explaining it all for us the time sparrow in in front of the s.p.d. h q. argentina's navy says an unusual sound attacked in near the last known position of a missing submarine is quote consistent with an explosion all the noise was
