a new coalition but the german president met with him earlier and he's believed to have pressed him to reconsider that position that's after the collapse of talks last weekend between america's conservatives and two other parties. well here with me now in the studio as did obvious political correspondent thomas farah times welcome you've been following this for us you were just outside the s.p.d. headquarters the war here where you're welcome for us here. how likely is it that the social democrats are going to go into a coalition now well it is unlikely at this point that they will go into a grand coalition i mean that's something that many members of the s.p.d. certainly do not want because they see that that was one of the biggest problems that they face in the elections of ten twenty four but that's not the only option that they're discussing they're also discussing for example whether they could be a minority government led by an american conservative with for example the greens
10:06 pm
and some sort of agreement with the social democrats or not case by case basis for example in europe there's now even discussions of the possibility of joining another form of coalition for example also with the greens on the conservatives so it's not only about the possibility of a grand coalition at the moment the possibility of joining a grand coalition is one that at least within the party base and among the members is not very favored because they see that rather as a problem and not necessarily as something that would benefit them so everything is still on the table right now or perhaps better up in the air and no one knows the party isn't even super united listen to what karl lauterbach a leading member of the s.p.d. is saying right now. we're not too little if nothing else is possible of course we have to think about a grand coalition. but we need to talk about content. a grand coalition. if the social democrats did enter negotiations are they going to

be in any position to make demands well to a certain extent yes because they could present it as saying look we're saving. the situation here we're putting the country first instead of the party first on the other hand it is clear they wouldn't be the leading parties or they can just say well these are our demands and you have to meet them a week where we can say that the s.p.d. now is in a situation where not everyone agrees with the very strict position by the leadership after the september twenty four elections where they said there's no circumstance are we planning to join another grand coalition there are members of as we've just seen here who say well let's at least sit at the same table and discuss and if things don't work out well they don't work out but we're not simply maintaining that radical position of no correlation with and have a look at think on international level a lot of people are wondering is germany going to have fresh elections yes or no what's your take i don't think they will have fresh elections because that's
10:08 pm
something that most parties simply don't want to even if openly they say that they would be prepared for them i think the parties will come to some sort of agreement even if it takes some time for that agreement to come but it would be a costly so lucian to have new elections one that would be uncertain for many members as well so i don't think it will happen all right this time is spare our political correspondent so plenty more to come from you this evening stay with us. we're turning now to argentina and the desperate plight of relatives waiting to learn the fate of the forty four crewmembers who are on board a missing submarine naval officials say an unusual sound detected near the last known position of the sub may have been an explosion that is further dashing hopes of finding survivors as the cell nears the last of its oxygen supply. the growing desperation of the families can be clearly heard in their prayers as they gather outside mar del plata home naval base of the missing submarine.
