11:01 am

11:02 am
a tumultuous week for the country after robert mugabe resigned earlier this week he ruled the country with an iron fist for nearly four decades. well the christian one who has been following all the latest developments for us from harare and we also have a journalist you're going line on who reported from zimbabwe for a decade he joins us from bonn christine and european good to have you both christiane let's start with you in harare the whole country must be watching this event what it is as a been like there in harare today is it a credible atmosphere assuming there is an uncle on phrase that he released a song a couple of months ago and the song lyrics go something along the lines of god. that is sure not to say the crocodile is going to come and rule at the time people didn't know that they will be singing the song on a day like this and calling it prophetic because indeed the crocodile so to say has been sworn in in a synagogue is now the president everybody virtually everybody has become
11:03 am
a political commentator on some solace it is the talk of the town people are happy they are embracing this it is a celebrate removed you see flags everywhere radios in cars put to full bras in volume those ican be at the stadium listening via radio people gathered in groups around television sets it's a celebration a day in fact a notice went out to the royals yesterday to release. it to be able to allow them to take part in this day in some way or another so a very exciting. almost like a national holiday today there christina mr long in love coming let's come to you and you have covered zimbabwe for many years as we said how significant is this change of power and what will emerson and god will bring to the country. well it's really important is an important day it's more or less a day of symbolism god wants to make sure that he's got the ride symbols and shows the right symbols today because there is just
11:04 am
a very narrow window open to change and he has to make sure that people understand that he perhaps has a new some new ideas some you have some use dogs for the country. right to christine and you're going to we're looking here at pictures of the ceremony as it's taking place in the national sports stadium in harare we'll be monitoring this celebrations and going live to the speech from president as soon as he begins to speak we'll be coming back to both of you a little bit later as well for now though we're going to move on to some other news european union leaders are meeting in brussels at this hour with their counterparts from six members of its so-called eastern partnership bill discuss how to cooperate further to create stronger economies and governance and bellicose moldova ukraine georgia armenia and azerbaijan ukraine is just one of those countries with high hopes of moving towards membership
11:05 am
meanwhile that summit could be overshadowed by another meeting in brussels today a british prime minister theresa may will talk to you president donald tusk to try to close the deal on brags that divorce terms british media reports say may could be willing to pay up to forty billion euros for her country's outstanding obligations but that is still far short of the estimate of sixty billion the two sides have three weeks to agree before they can move on to discussing post brags that trade. here in germany the president is pressuring the social democrats to reconsider whether to join a coalition government with chancellor angela merkel and her conservative party s.p.d. leader martin shows us so far ruled it out but other leading social democrats say they are open to dialogue they say the party has a duty to the nation to help end the deadlock. the man of the moment s.p.d. leader martin childes arriving for his meeting with the german president frank walter steinmeier reportedly pressed
11:06 am
a social democrat to reconsider forming another grand coalition with conservatives after the meeting however no indications of an outcome. earlier in the day schultz addressed protesting employees of tech giant z. months while there he hinted at what he thought of angular marco's conservatives. mrs merkel and mr zero for can address siemens directly if they don't they may have a different opinion to mine. an opinion schultz is afraid will be drowned out in a grand coalition but within the s.p.d. itself there are other voices emerging than the. ones that if we have the right ideas and can really employment then when the grand coalition is the better option for germany.
11:07 am
but with schultz as party leader coalition talks seem difficult he'd rejected the idea the night that parliamentary election results became known rumors that he will step down as party chief have now been rubbish to. john mica. the other party's couldn't form this jamaican coalition and now you ask if martin schultz will remain party leader they need to answer for their actions fast. later in the evening s.p.d. members met at their headquarters in between the long deliberations a brief update for the press. because not flocking to discuss the meeting between martin schultz and president stein my own view. is much. we need some time to analyze that in depth. but. we can't solve in a few hours what others have taken two months to mess up as an audience for
11:08 am
a moment for books. it's a tough choice for the s.p.d. to take political responsibility or chart a new course. let's bring in political correspondent hans bron to is following the story for us the pressure is on the ask p.d. how divided is the party well as in any large party there are a number of factions in the party and these factions have been pushing ahead their line on these things the more left wing faction in the social democrats is very very tenuous about new talks about a new grand coalition with the conservatives they would in the end prefer a minority government in other words america would form a government that needs to find changing majorities for every decision that parliament takes and some of those decisions might then be supported by the social democrats that would keep the social democrats a little bit between deciding to go for a full grand coalition and staying completely in opposition and then there are the
11:09 am
more conservative factions within the party that seem to be gaining something of an upper hand at the moment and they're pushing for full coalition talks at the moment the situation is that everyone is saying we need more time we need more time to think about this ourselves and have exploratory talks behind the scenes probably also already with the conservatives at the moment the divisions are not at the stage where there is. infighting as it were. covering the very latest political developments for us here in berlin thank you honey. and returning on now to our top story emerson magog has just been sworn in as the new president of zimbabwe he takes over from robert mugabe who rule the country for thirty seven years we're watching here live pictures of the celebrations that are taking place at the natural national sports stadium in harare and magog is expected
11:10 am
to deliver a speech just shortly will be listening into that speech live i believe we have our correspondent christine mooned was there standing by in harare she's been following all of this for us christine is there and also you're going along on a journalist who has been covering zimbabwe for many years a good to have you both back with us christine coming to you now you know a lot of zimbabweans have said they never expected a day without robert mugabe as president of this must be such a significant day for them. this is sunni and this is why this and not god was controversial paused has somewhat been almost glossed over this is why he's been embraced the way that he has because it was so don just became accustomed to to a life of hardship and struggle this was pretty much a police state in the last couple of years people will fullest into submission but we're not allowed to express their views about how they really felt about president robert mugabe and his time in office you know he had there was such
11:11 am
a meeting labyrinth sort of like network of people that were reporting anybody who would would cry out in any way and so it became difficult to to really get a sense of how zimbabweans really felt it was so fearful of journalists for example in fear that anything they say to a journalist would get them into trouble and so the fact that we're here at thirty seven years into a new president has been sworn in many people never thought they'll see this day as spoken so not as involved in around the world essentially who left this country because of the way robert mugabe was ruling they never thought they could come back and live and leave the last year now the prospect off one day returning to zimbabwe their country out there but it is something that is really much a reality for them and so yes as soon meet myself included i never thought that i would be here reporting at a time when president mugabe is no longer. at a time when he has resigned i feel if anything he would die and then be out of office. and we can see from the jubilation of the number of people who have packed
11:12 am
into the national sports stadium in harare what a landmark day this is for zimbabwe you're going to come to you know you know what from what christina's saying also we saw this transition of power this resignation of robert mugabe it seemed to happen very quickly almost overnight and tell us more about that back home a surprise to you. but i think it was a surprise for you generally body that it happened so fast and nobody really expected that it when says move. so i think it was a surprise for the food for more or less all the people but it seems that it was well planned. it seems it was well planned how do you think it came to that that mugabe in the end decided that was the point for him to resign. i think the point where he decided to resign that he found out since he was not in touch with the with the population at all for a year is when he found that the people really are going to resist him and that the people are really not in love with him anymore and i think that he gave up i think
11:13 am
that was perhaps the main reason and that's also the danger from him i got one at the moment before do you feel for you in zimbabwe and if that is going to to calm down and to cool down then he has to deliver christine coming to you know a lot of questions about robert mugabe and his whereabouts today his wife grace as well well can you tell us about that. it has to be i wondered whether or not robert mugabe would be at today's inauguration listening to us and not. pretty much the rest of the zanu p.f. the ruling party they had been you know so very cautious and about how they were referring to robert mugabe being very dignified giving him the respect that they feel that he is due. you know going as far as you know being recon city a tree essentially telling zimbabweans that this is still a man that we refer to in this country he's fought hard liberation from colonialism so he's very much a revered figure now he's not going to be at the the aeration today we understand
11:14 am
that the two minutes yesterday and that they both came to the conclusion that the former president had really had a tough time over the last couple of days the possibly to the hospital the events that have taken place that he needed to resist but we were told that president mugabe he gave not got what he's placing and that evolved to give him his support and that the tone of how they deal with mugabe now will send important precedent for the coming years as well kristie and what do zimbabweans expect now from their new president. sunni this is a country where conservative estimates put it that eighty percent of people are unemployed some go as far as saying ninety percent i've been here sunni and i can tell you on a daily basis private sector companies a small businesses closing down they simply cannot keep up this economy has pretty much been brought to a standstill you know cash to be taken for granted you know to talk sex and cash there was involved in some held physical cash in months there's
11:15 am
a cash shortage in this country you've got young graduates in this country who are selling tomatoes on the side of the road because a degree or university education doesn't guarantee you a job there are no jobs so the economy is in dire straits sumi and that is what's want to get immediate attention to that jobs need to stop being created and that means that investment needs to be brought into this country and not what needs to work closely with policymakers to make sure that in vista friendly policies are implemented that has been the challenge of mugabe's time in office that investors just haven't had the degree of certainty that they require that they've been worried about the regime and how things are happening that corruption amongst politicians has been too bright and so people are looking to not what to save this economy when he came back two days of addressing a crowd of supporters for the first time really since he came back he told people that he was already in touch with people from the international community and regional neighbors and that they had expressed the desire to support and grow this
11:16 am
involving economy so that's the immediate expectation that will get this economy going again and indeed when he returned to harare on wednesday christine it was that aspect where he said jobs jobs jobs that got the biggest cheers it seemed among them but where and so where they're coming to you know you know what do you think are the biggest challenges facing emmerson because you said this is a very important time there's a short time frame. well i think the most important point for him will be restore. the rule of law i think that's the most important as well as making sure that the foreign investors intentional foreign investors understand the system and that corruption is not still because of the day and of course he has to make sure that he's going to solve and to stop that freefall of the economy because that life is really hard when people you know women do have ins about what he has to
11:17 am
stop that immediately and that he has due within a time from of let's say a month because he has to deliver the new budget until the end of general read and then he has to deliver at least some ideas and some possible solutions for that and that's i think the number one all right just to remind our viewers both of you we are watching the inauguration ceremony for president emerson and god where he's been sworn in just a short while ago waiting for him to speak this is all taking place at the national sports stadium in harare where looking at these pictures as we're looking at these pictures here again i want to ask you also about the role of the military you know that for a long time had stood behind a robert mugabe where do they stand now. then without the military robot wouldn't have reigned for thirty seven years and definitely a muslim doctor would couldn't have taken over the rain from robert mugabe i think people more or less expect at the moment that they will go back to their barracks
11:18 am
after he has been sworn in and has delivered his speech so high boost you also think that they will do so because they have been vital part of that kind of redemption good job whatever you want to call it i want to ask you more about also emerson and gaga and who he is you're going starting with you what more do we know about him because he was a close ally of robert mugabe for many years. i think was he the more than a close ally i think he was one of his last friends well they started to cooperate in them in the mid seventy's and he was always the want to carry on doing the dirty business for robert mugabe and actually was even the kind of personal security system to him so that was much more it was a kind of friendship that even the father and son relationship over the last years and people were really shocked to see that father robert mugabe gave up his son then was my god one and i think they're still blame grace mugabe for that so he had
11:19 am
that that's a very intense relationship and he was really the want to carry a four foot forward because it's nearly christine do people trust anderson and got to take this country on the right path. yes surprising so a lot of people i speak to they are always a few amas and they know very much about his he is a great quality as as mugabe is in full say essentially they know very i mean the name crocodile says that all of the people know that that nickname comes from that the type of person that we're talking about but zimbabweans on looking forward and they're saying that perhaps the man has changed and that he is going to bring the change that this that this country needs to all of those who are skeptical of him who are worried about his to say this may very well be an extension of robert mugabe and maybe even worse some people have told me that older people have told me
11:20 am
that they're more scared of him as the number than they off robert mugabe so by and large sunni looking at the crowds that are gathered at the stadium today that the people that i've been talking to here most people are willing to move cost him a symbol that was cost look to the future and they stem hope think that because it will be international attention that has been brought on to this country that is on in a synagogue that he is going to be different that the the pressure that is now on him in front on a global platform is going to push him to be a more democratic president and one who's going to serve the people and another thing you said one addressing that crowd the court is on the day he got back is he said that he's going to be a servant of the people that's something that a lot of people held on to they say that that language that he's using his language that they have not been hearing from the point of stations and a robert mugabe and so he seems to be saying all the right things he seems to be to be really hitting the spot that that hurts most when it comes to the people of zimbabwe so guess they all very much aware of who this person is but
11:21 am
a hopeful that all of the developments of the last couple of days that he's witnessed how mugabe walked out of office and perhaps that's going to change him. kristin i'm wondering what a younger isn't bob winds have been told telling you you know those who only know robert mugabe as president what have they been saying to you. you know young people just just they just want to guess and the city by the way young people are the majority of this country by the way i think that i don't want to put the wrong statistics but a significant number of this population is below the age of thirty five so innocent i got was really presiding over a very young country this is these are young people who have access to to things like social media things like internet they understand what it means to to come from zimbabwe and they compared this country suit to regional neighbors they compare this this country to the countries further were brought it on other continents and and they know that they need but at the end it's a very educated populace sumeet they know what the constitution say's they are going to hold innocent none of which account they have told me that they will never
11:22 am
let another robert mugabe type of scenario govern in this country again that it will give him a hard time and that they will never sit back and be well as they were under robert mugabe so he's up against a very big challenge as all the ins and outs have to please they have tasted freedom they're not going to let that glows sumeet the young people are going to let that go they will go to the streets and they expect innocent to uphold their rights to be able to protest against him if necessary if it's not done if you're coming to you know what about the question of internationalization of zimbabwe has now for years been a country that has been fairly isolated how important will it be for emerson when god to know reach out to neighbors around africa but also the rest of the world. well i think without the neighboring countries the sudden countries cons of vive so he needs the backing of those countries like south africa botswana mozambique and
11:23 am
then governor of a doubt that it will be difficult for him to survive as a politician and difficult for him baba disinvite and when it comes to the international community well it's about was a lot of money to the world bank to the i am after the southern african development bank well that's all part of that lima plan alema agreement of two thousand and fifteen and i have to fulfill what they have signed in two thousand and fifteen and he has been a vital part of the negotiations with. my agreement people so it is absolutely vital for him and he's got a chance to speak to the international community the international leaders during that forthcoming summit of the african union and the e.u. so i think it's it's the right time for him to convince people that he's going to restore law and order that he's going to restore the constitution and that he is stands on the constitution of the kind of fundament of his political work you're
11:24 am
going could you for our viewers explain what that lima agreement is. well the limited remit is more or less a plan how to pay back the deps to the world bank to the i am a half into the african development bank as well as to completely restructure the stage on companies that's about one hundred since they use around eighty percent of their annual budget and of course it's a complete plan to restructure the economy in the forthcoming years at the moment i'm up next. the possibilities to do it like the money and that has not been driven forward for the last years for the last three years so it's high time to do that now ok just to remind our viewers we're watching here in the celebrations in the national sports stadium in harare anderson my god what has been sworn in as the new president we are waiting for him to deliver his first speech us president this after robert mugabe resigned earlier this week ending for nearly four decades in
11:25 am
office you're going to follow up on that what kind of tone do you think emerson got boy is likely to strike in his speech that we're waiting for. well i think he's a very pragmatic person he developed into a problem but the person over the last three years and here i think realized specifically from the outside wall and in exile for a few weeks or days or weeks in south africa what the people feel i think that was one of the big mistakes of robert mugabe that he lost contact to his own people and i'm pretty sure as that kind of want to carry of robert mugabe you know found out what people really think and as i said before it's now the time of symbolism he has to deliver signals may that may be that he is going to appoint young people young technocrats for the power of state or the state owned companies who are more or less able to lead those companies in a young and fresh way he will definitely find
11:26 am
a mighty of the social media. and that she's going to use them in the better than others have done. so i think it's now the time of political symbolism in zimbabwe and that has always been the case for centuries symbolism as well as was so important in setting a tone going forward christine if you can hear me coming back to you now you know we heard you're going there talking about major economic reforms restructuring the entire economy essentially restructuring state owned companies as well that is a process that could and very likely will take several years is there a concern that this initial euphoria might wear off quickly that people could become impatient. yes definitely i think you know i think he's got a really it's a told us we're innocent but i think critically what's involved paeans once is see is a things are going in the right direction a lot of that's going to start with the kevin announcement that he's going to make
11:27 am
later today we expect the kind of people that he's going to put into the different cabinet positions i have that young people tell me they don't want to see old man essentially forming that havenot being they because often they historical contributions to this country but they want young fresh blood young minds educated people who understand the world and how the world is working today so a lot of things that. are going to really points to whether or not he's on the right track we're going to be listening to to that anguish that he's going to be using in his speech each. is. it acknowledge when the faults or does he realize that corruption has been rampant is he going to evolve to crack down on that so yes it will take a while before we see things being restored to a level that people are satisfied with but i think what people want to see from him a synagogue is a commitment that they want to acknowledge where things have been going wrong and into to evolve to clamp down on that and to to make better off what has been happening i mean in this country i i was driving around certain parts of the
11:28 am
capital and i'm being shown you know various mines and pieces of land and and dairy farms etc and people will tell me such and such a minister owns this and such and such a minister owns that eventually politicians owning much of this country the land as well an ordinary person is not able to buy land in this country because ministers pretty much own all of it so what young people want to see what it was want to see from him it's not what is a commitment to doing a lot of what has happened in the pasta much of that starts with what you say is what he commits himself to doing and like i say some of the cabinet that he's going to the nonce shorty to are we have been following celebrations the inauguration of emerson and gaga in them bob way as the new president tens of thousands of people v.i.p.'s from across africa been gathering there at the stadium after robert mugabe resigned earlier this week paving the way for emerson and god were to take the post as the new president you're going long in for us in bonn and christine money for us
11:29 am
