7:00 pm
this is it on the news live from berlin pandemonium in central london panic breaks
7:01 pm
out in the city's popular oxford street as police respond to an incident and tell people to stay off the streets and the nearby subway station is briefly evacuated we'll go live to london for the latest also coming up a massive attack rocks egypt's sinai peninsula killing at least two hundred thirty five people state media report the gunman bombed a mosque and opened fire on worshipers during friday prayers. plus are germany's social democrats bowing to pressure their leader has been used to talks on a possible coalition with uncle america's conservatives amid efforts to find a way out of the political crisis also quote myself. if you were. an instant. president ever some god way takes the oath of office cheered on by tens of
7:02 pm
thousands of people in v.i.p.'s at the national sports stadium zimbabwe's second president also p. tribute to robert mugabe. thank you so much for joining us we start our broadcast with unfolding events in central london that city on edge after police respond to an incident at london's oxford circus one of the british capital's busiest intersections and subway stations news of the ongoing police operation sparked panic after a law enforcement ordered people to avoid the area it's not clear at this point in time what police are responding to but authorities say there are no casualties and no evidence of gunshots. and the london metropolitan police are telling everyone to remain safe and stay calm in
7:03 pm
a tweet police first said if you are on oxford street go into a building and stay inside until further direction avoid traveling to the oxford street area at this stage police have not located any casualties well shortly there after police repeat at the absence of suspects or victims they tweeted we have not located any trace of suspects evidence of shots fired or casualties officer still on scene if you are in a building stay there if you're on the street in oxford street leave the area officers continue to search the area more updates as soon as we have them. all right and we can talk now to our correspondent based in a london for the very latest brigid what are you hearing
7:04 pm
well i'm actually not very far away from oxford street and for the last hour or so i feel a lot of helicopter sounds also police sirens and as you said that has been a lot of massive police response to the incident in oxford street however from what we know the tube stations have opened again and as you said the police have not found any evidence of any gunshots or any casualties so it's a very confusing picture still an ongoing situation but since the tube stations the underground stations have reopened that could be a sign that the situation is under control or actually that nothing has happened but it's speculation at this point in time the police has not has not said anything further on that all right so it doesn't look like the area is still in lockdown and they're not dealing with a live hostile situation to understand it correctly this is my understanding from what we hear from the metropolitan police and scotland
7:05 pm
yard so they have they're still saying that it's better for people to stay inside if they are in the area that's still the official advice however that the underground stations have been opened and nothing has found yet and since they were called to the area over an hour ago if it was an ongoing dangerous situation you would have thought that they would have traced anyone but they haven't so far right and bear good as your reporting we're showing live pictures pictures from oxford street there are some people still out there but it's not as busy as it as it is normally put this into context for us the oxford circus intersection is busy on any day but today more so. well today is black friday so it's the day before christmas when a lot of shoppers would hope to get some bargains and oxford circus on a normal friday is very very packed i mean people are really rubbing against each
7:06 pm
other and it's a place that you if you live in london. a lot of people would try and avoid because it's very difficult to get through the area however shoppers do come and they would have especially come today of black friday and in the run up to christmas so yes it would have been an exceptionally busy time of year and tell us a little bit i mean there was a lot of panic when the initial of reports came out well yes because london is on edge we've seen our share of terror attacks now several months ago but before the summer we had a number of attacks in manchester london bridge. there was obviously people are nervous and if you do hear of you know anything goes quickly via social media and it's easy all to imagine how a panic would spread quite quickly and especially when there are
7:07 pm
a lot of people. in a confined area like on oxford circus and the bigger before i let you go what does this tell us so that the authorities reaction how well prepared are they when dealing with these events. well oxford circus is very much in the center of london so that's an area that's extremely easy for police to get to you there's british transport police is in the area you've also got patrols in central london so this is an area that would have been especially quick for the police to get. definitely they are prepared and in london and the u.k. is still on a high alert so police are expecting that you know this is we have not seen the end of that era but they have not so far said that anything was imminent just yet. reporting and we've been showing live pictures of people going back into the oxford
7:08 pm
circus station thank you for your reporting. to developments now in egypt where the death toll from a horrific attack has climbed to two hundred thirty five with many others wounded it took place in egypt's sinai peninsula near the provincial capital and irish government detonated explosives and then opened fire at a mosque that was packed with worshippers for friday prayers no one has claimed responsibility but for the past three years a gyptian security forces have bowed and i insurgency backed by the so-called islamic state or shortly after the attack president of the fetzer has sisi addressed the nation promising to respond with what he called brutal force also declared three days of national mourning military. i send my condolences to the families of the martyrs and my wishes for
7:09 pm
a speedy recovery for all the wounded. once again i tell all egyptians said what happened will only increase our determination to face terrorism with all our strength. all right and he's kareem al gore is in the education capital of cairo karim reaction has been swift. reaction that's been swift the president went on air in television and said that the attack is called good can expect very bluetooth responses from the stage and there was also a bomb being raped by the egyptian air force of. the other side and there are grounds to also know a nightly curfew in the area and set the scene for us if you will what would have been happening in the mosque shortly before the attack took place. whether this was
7:10 pm
really the normal friday sermon in the last minute you expect that there was some according to eyewitnesses some explosive device and. blew off in the most scared which way people run out of the police and in front of the presence for cars thought it was the militants coming out of the cars starting firing on the call that was trying to escape the scene the whole thing was taking place for quite a while because there are also reports that groups are going to cause to try to approach both order to transport the injured were fired upon karim who was being targeted. well that's not really clear to see or if you really have one of it is then this mosque is known to be frequented by. muslims which is kind of or more spiritual reading. and that is very much hated
7:11 pm
by the more rigid petition of the militant islamists and we also had some cases there were some holy shrines were attacked from this week which ones were attacked but it is other things like this other series is that this religion is a religion it is inhabited by its right that is known to have good relationships with the security forces just cooperating with the security forces so there's a possibility that old scores with that is here in the equipment what is it about the sinai region that makes it so volatile and why is president sisi a former general having so much trouble securing the area. but this is not new tool as he says time is a small scale wall or is it really that islam is in your sign it started under mubarak escalated year over year it became more complicated because the action of the security forces also eliminated a big part of the population there so now we have
7:12 pm
a situation where there were always attacks against security forces this year we had also attacks against christians in the area and this is the curse prime to a more. to curry macari where porting from egypt thank you you're welcome. here in berlin the german president has made a new move to resolve the coalition crisis president. has invited chancellor angela merkel and social democrat leader martin shuls to talks next week on forming a coalition government there's still a big gap to close the s.p.d. had previously been strictly opposed to joining a coalition with america but a meeting with the president yesterday produced a change of heart for martin schulz another term for the s.p.d. in a grand coalition is not an appealing option after the election he repeatedly stressed the need for the party to undergo a period of renewal in the role of opposition. now sultans agree to enter into
7:13 pm
talks but he's promised the grassroots the final word. should such talks lead us to participate in our government in whichever form how ever such a government would look it will be the party members get to vote on this. the s.p.d. faces a crucial test at a meeting with german president. shultz was reportedly pressured to reconsider forming another grand coalition with conservatives. one politician who would certainly welcome another grand coalition is foreign minister and s.p.d. politician. he is currently enjoying a visit to london. but he calls for caution. now will have to hold negotiations it's also tricky for europe because an unstable
7:14 pm
germany creates difficulties for europe but no one should expect the s.p.d. to immediately iron out the problems caused by the failure of the previous coalition talks coalition talks might be difficult with shultz as party leader as he has repeatedly rejected the option of a grand coalition rumors have been circulating he might step down members of angela merkel's conservative c.d.u. are hopeful the impasse is over. the president's appeal to every party has to ensure that there will be a stable government in germany has had some impact we have to start talking with the s.p.d. as soon as they're ready and form a new government soon. martin shultz now faces a tough choice cooperate with uncle americal and break his promise or put the political stability of germany at risk well i did have his flickr correspondent
7:15 pm
thomas ferrer is on the story for you thomas get to say what is the us media leader to reconsider his position. i would say two things laid out on the one hundred obviously the conversation that martin short tight with president. president's time as an incredibly influential person in germany one who can direct political debates in the country on the other hand something else that played a very important role was the fact that many members within the s.p.d. were no longer convinced that that strict opposition to joining a new coalition was the right path for the party they have been internal debates in the last few days and in particular after the so-called jamaica negotiations collapse to see whether the s.p.d. should change line should revisit that strict opposition and that's something that definitely played a role in the negotiations last night the internal discussions within the s.p.d.
7:16 pm
and obviously also with the conversations that martin shows how with president time maya and thomas what do you think that the s.p.d. support base will make of this you turn well they are divided as i mentioned so where are some people are still very very skeptical indeed of forming any possible coalition with angela merkel because they see that as the main problem that ended up in the s.p.d. having a very bad result on september twenty four the elections appear much wendi for there are others who say that the s.p.d. was simply no position to reject talking to angela merkel that said it is still unclear whether that will bring any results for now they are only sitting at the same table and seeing whether there is any possibility of finding common ground or thomas carol reporting thank you. and the shopping season has officially begun in the united states daniel has more on that and no surprise later is it is an extremely profitable time of year believe it or not many retailers make a massive forty percent of their yearly sales in the months leading up to christmas
7:17 pm
and it all kicks off with black friday retailers outside of the u.s. are trying to get in on the action britain already has boxing day in china has singles day but the likes of germany and france don't really have one big day for shopping sales here black friday isn't stirring up the door busting frenzy as seen in the u.s. . they'd barely had time to digest the thanksgiving turkey macy's in new york opened its doors a day early the iconic department store keen to be the first stop for enthusiastic shoppers. black friday has long been an institution in the united states traditionally seen as the beginning of the holiday shopping season when retailers go from being in the red to in the black. the day of boundless consumption for business owners it's a dream come true no wonder then that retailers abroad have tried to get in on the
7:18 pm
trend but is there an appetite for black friday outside of the united states some shoppers on the streets of berlin simply less than and. it's pointless. people will buy things whether they're a little cheaper or not. we've taken this on from america and it's stupid. online retailers have also been trying to cash in in germany alone black friday and the following so-called cyber monday are expected to generate an extra one point seven billion euros in sales but german consumer protection groups are warning people to shop with caution they say it's important to remember that not everything that glitters is gold. is an unproved. cool head do some research use price comparison websites to check if it's really a good our friend whether or not to go for us a cool head while black friday may have arrived in germany it will probably be a while before scenes like these in new jersey become the norm.
7:19 pm
and the culture is on the wall street for us here in sort of you got your black friday shopping done. well i haven't even thought about what to get my friends and family here but overall it looks like of the season has started on a high note for the usual retail industry and expectations are that on average americans might spend nine hundred sixty seven dollars each that would be a new record overall just this thanksgiving weekend almost seventy percent of americans are going to start their holiday shopping and overall we see strong gains also here on wall street for retail stocks wal-mart for instance or especially. the department store chain macy's with strong gains here of
7:20 pm
the weekend so despite the strong gains it seems that black friday isn't really what it used to be the trend is actually towards browsing on the friday and shopping online on cyber monday. browsing on friday or even already on thursday as we saw online sales increased by about eighteen percent yesterday on thanksgiving day and overall it looks like for the first time ever more americans will do their holiday shopping online and not of the line and that's also why we see the stock of amazon dot com reaching a new all time high here in the friday session but it looks like the pockets of americans are deep enough for both for online and offline as shoppers so it really looks like a pretty strong season for the retail industry overall here in the u.s. ok well yes if you don't get your shopping done today you can do it at home by monday thank you very much reporting that for us. the big question will holaday
7:21 pm
shoppers reach for their cash all their card this year well it might depend on where they live new data released by the european central bank show that cash is still king among the nineteen countries of the eurozone and not by a small margin nearly four to five retail shoppers last year paid with currency over plastic the majority of u.k. shoppers reach for their cards in twenty sixteen and there with debit cards alone taking over taking cash for the first time quite interesting trend we're seeing there but american shoppers they're definitely used to using their cards using cash even less according to a twenty fifteen survey they're also more likely to use other methods such as bank to bank transfers a small number still write a cashier's check not surprisingly europeans carry the most cash on them sixty five euros on average compare that with fifty nine dollars in the u.s. and in the u.k.
7:22 pm
a master card survey from last year found that the average brit has less than five pounds. and staying with the black friday amazon workers in germany have staged a strike to demand better wages walkouts took place at six warehouses across the country the campaign was organized to coincide with black friday german trade union valid says amazon employees receive lower wages than workers in comparable jobs the retail giant insists the strike won't affect delivery. german competition authorities are investigating allegations of illegal ticket price hikes at lufthansa the move follows a string of complaints from customers since rival evelyn's collapse prices on some routes have risen by up to thirty percent it's also left tons of the only carrier operating certain groups within just. evelyn's demise has created an additional
7:23 pm
demand for around sixty thousand tickets a day of tons of wants to take over the majority of evelyn's planes but needs e.u. approval before it can do so. and i'll be back with more later including the economic optimism in zimbabwe now to lay low and fake news is still rife on social media it's still facebook says it's working on a new tool to combat fake news and it will let users know if they had liked any of the now delete it pages that allegedly pushed russian propaganda during the twenty sixteen u.s. election earlier this month facebook handed over to the u.s. congress they read thousand examples of russian bought ads the ads featured a range of hot button issues like police violence a liberal causes and islamophobia well according to the company some one hundred forty six million americans were exposed to such posts.
7:24 pm
well we here at d.f.w. are also taking on the fight against the use of tell us more are joined by for that from our social media team which has developed an innovative tool to help verify on line contacts so that you could give our viewers a sense of what you are offered guests on the team itself. so unfortunately it false information is becoming more and more widespread online and it's widely shared on social media sometimes it's on purpose but sometimes users don't even realize or they don't know that what they're sharing or liking is fake for instance a video or a photo taken out of context let me show you an example here this was this went viral after the explosion in brussels last year and the video claims to show c.c.t.v. footage of the explosion in the metro station in the belgian capital but actually it was filmed during an attack in moscow in two thousand and eleven so nothing to
7:25 pm
do with brussels here's another example this falsely claims to show torture children but actually it was just a stunt by a martial arts trainer in india so a lot of pitfalls on line and these lead to more confusion more tension and this is bad especially during very delicate situations such as terror attacks for instance exactly those breaking news moments how can you tell what is real and what's fake so. a social media team look through a lot of tons of user generated content every day and to make our life a little bit easier our experts in the search for media team have developed a new tool with the help of a greek tech company eight hundred seat it's called truly media here you can see it and it basically allows journalists to work together to verify social media content and what it does is it helps to answer for. main question so do the images show
7:26 pm
what they're they claim to show can we trust the user and did the incidents take place where the user claims it did and did it take place when he or she claims it did and another interesting feature about truly need is that it allows us to team up with other with other organisations for instance i'm missing international they are now using truly media two very feisty human rights violations as a terrific tool for the what if you don't have access is there another way that you could verify whether news is authentic or not i mean our viewers who do not have access to truly media there's there's a couple of easy steps that one can take to make sure that what they're sharing is not false information for instance for pictures or videos you can use for pictures rather you can use the socal reverse image search on google and that's to check whether a picture has been used in a different context before and here is
7:27 pm
a tweet for instance we can go back to the. ok there this is an example of a tweet that claimed it was showing the shooter in las vegas last month but actually by right clicking the picture and selecting search for search google for image and you can see that it was actually a fake and it was a comedian some high who is a guy that pops up on twitter every time there's a mass shooting in the us and he did the time as well and more than anything if the first step is to ask yourself if you know look at the picture and think if that sounds or looks too good to be true well then often it is fake and watches because people always are firing as well to use for that archer thank you so very much have a great weekend thank you you watch you do to reduce we still have a lot more to tell you about here's what's ahead. stays stolen babies thousands of

spaniards grew up not knowing who their real parents were to take a look at an adoption for cash scandal or the effects are still being felt today. and the german film company will fog turns one hundred this year from epic early productions like metropolis dark period of nazi propaganda films to new award winning t.v. hits i don't slant eighty three and generation war two fun has made film history we take a look back with the w.'s film expert scott roxboro. plus a new man at the helm is about wait can he turn around that country's economy that a whole lot more come right out.

nothing to give. but two billion people do. to them i am everything. their home. their food. their livelihood. but day by day i disappear. and so does everything i get. two million people who care about me. need me. and now. i need. great to see again you're watching the daily news only in america berlin these are
7:31 pm
main headlines right now. a major security operation in central london sparked scenes of panic this evening as police responded to reports of an incident but police say they are standing down after finding no evidence of a suspect or casualties the fact that subway stations and stores have reopened to the general public. egypt's state television says at least two hundred two hundred thirty five people have been killed in an attack on a mosque in the country's sinai peninsula scores more are wounded witnesses say militants that needed a bomb and then opened fire on worshippers as they tried to flee there so far been no claim of responsibility. it's a landmark day for zimbabwe ever some gaga has been sworn in as the country's new president after nearly four decades of rule by robert mugabe tens of thousands of people in v.i.p.'s from across the african continent gathered at the national
7:32 pm
stadium in harare to witness the ceremony while the new president promised to introduce democratic reform and kick start the country's ravished economy. i'm assuming one guy was inauguration ceremony went off with a bang and a massive military salute his fearsome reputation earned him the nickname of the crocodile and after he was sacked a month ago by ousted president robert mugabe he is not back to take power his inauguration comes off to the sudden end to make up a thirty seven year rule but he paid tribute to the man he replaces. and only still remains found in front of. the whole nation. comrade god. yes
7:33 pm
you know it was good for national independence his support is not so surprising the years where was a key ally helping direct zimbabwe's war of independence in the one nine hundred seventy s. in the eighty's he became a feared spider master during his years of civil conflict he was long to just make up a successor but he fell out with his aging mentor when it became clear mcgarvey wanted to install his wife grace as president instead. despite the obvious support not everyone's convinced that things will be so different. but. you know i'm really asking myself what we're going to get up to seven years what. we expect to be delivered on the new dispensation that is certainly a lot to do symbolic ways rural economy has been wrecked by robert mugabe's decades long drive to confiscate white owned farms business leaders hope can use his
7:34 pm
international connections to revitalize activity. the crocodile is promising zimbabwe and the new era of democracy hopes may be high but there are also doubts about the head. well expectations are sky high for the new president melanie miller is a research associate at the german institute for international and security affairs she joins us here right now to talk some more about this a very warm welcome melanie the new president of course is riding this wave of hope and enthusiasm and zimbabweans are very happy to see robert mugabe leave after four decades how quickly does he have to deliver on all his promises and bring about change before that tight turns i mean you're right many is about to end for very relieved that the new governor heiress finally over but if they fail us of there
7:35 pm
that changes won't happen overnight there's a huge community for example of some bobbins and said south africa you know they can only go back if changes are being implemented i think one knows that so first of all he has to gain trust from his own party and a party convention in december and then he also wants to be reelected next year and for deceit has to deliver very soon so i think just i hope this will put pressure on him but people are desperate for jobs the economy is in the dumps how does he plan on addressing all of that. i mean he said that he would open up the country to foreign direct investments the agricultural sector could play a role. as a resource rich country use of lots of minerals and metals this could be a sector of development at the same time it's a risky sector risky for human rights violations and also if they developed a sector and other sectors the president has to make sure that it is inclusive growth which will be in the benefit of the whole population not only afford
7:36 pm
a benefit of a small elite let's talk irruption that's another thing that's very endemic in zimbabwe he's promised to fix that does that mean he's going to flip turn on his allies because they're still where they are yeah i mean it's true in a corrupt system everyone is affected so even with the committed president and it will be it will be hard he needs allies first of all in his party but also in the whole it cannot make sector he cannot do this on his own and then he has to expose corruption look at where add the problems and then make a plan a long term plan in the short term then does this will take time this will take time as well speaking about time there's no date set yet for general elections to take place in twenty eighteen do you believe they will take place and do you think that you will be able to ensure free and fair elections for the first time basically in zimbabwe this is
7:37 pm
a long time i mean to. elections will be held as planned. i think the opposition said yesterday debt they are cautiously optimistic that will not adopt those authorized tarion rule so i think this is a good the good sign and i think the next months maybe next weeks will show how this is going to happen so one question is where critical journalists be able to do their work what about social movements can they march in the streets without repression so we can. watch this these next steps end up served it and see if he would bring a democratic transition to be a big test and we're all going to see it unfold very soon are at melanie miller research associate at the german state for international security affairs thank you for spending time with us thank you very much i staying on zambo when daniel it's all about in the words of the president jobs jobs jobs are going to talk about
7:38 pm
exactly that zimbabwe's stock market is starting to recover from the chaos of the past days and zimbabweans are now looking to a guy go to fulfill his promises almost all of the population is out of work and as lay the mentioned he has promised jobs jobs jobs saying he'll place emphasis on agriculture and foreign direct investment the path to recovery will be long because the country has fallen far. selling tomatoes and onions because that's the only way to scrape up enough money to get by but those days finally over right you would collect more remote is a trained engineer and feels cheated out of his future he used to own his own company but the economic crisis in zimbabwe through business into a tailspin now he sells shoes. had to do this to you know order to supplement my income you know business hasn't been good. for the
7:39 pm
companies. so. the business basically trying to put food on the table for my family . there are a few jobs and zimbabwe some estimates but the unemployment rate did over ninety percent and businesses conducted in dollars you won or south african rand the country's currency doesn't exist anymore the government here only issues a kind of promissory note that no one wants there's plenty of homegrown ambition and talent the founder of this online platform returned to zimbabwe from britain and has so far hired twelve staff but there are hopes things will now finally change for the better. it is an economic fundamentals that need to be addressed and i expect and i hope that the new government will address those things i also. hope that we have a bet a corner with a bit economy its impacts us directly so advertisers which is how that's how we survive. zimbabwe has infrastructure
7:40 pm
a relatively well educated population fertile soil and plenty of mineral resources and many now hope that with mugabe gone the country will finally be able to reach its full potential. theme parks can be a lot of fun and we're not just talking about daring rides but also for operators and communities profiting from the money the visitors. spend and that's exactly what authorities in green young are banking on just outside of the capital of one of china's poorest regions a new theme park is set to open and get this it features exclusively virtual reality rides. this is china's first virtual reality theme park and it's not just another example of a massive infrastructure investment in the country many al hoping that this virtual reality themed park will bring more visitors i believe that after the park opens it
7:41 pm
will change tourism and weasely province and china's southwest like this is an inoperative attraction because it's just different it will definitely have a strong pull and can bring more tourists to. the park which cost one point five billion dollars to build lies on the outskirts of we on the capital of which is one of china's poorest provinces but while the investment is expected to benefit the region not everyone is convinced the theme park will improve the lives of locals. there are some projects that are polluting the environment. and we farmers hope that we can get rid of this pollution. it's bad for the countryside our kids and our society so on in the field because our hundreds of millions have been invested in this infrastructure what remains to be seen is whether locals will be able to

benefit. e.u. leaders are meeting in brussels to discuss cooperation with former soviet states as part of an initiative called the eastern partnership of the six countries taking part in the program ukraine moldova and georgia already have free trade deals with the european union our correspondent nick colony went to georgia to see what impact those changes are having it's here at the force of the caucasus mountains just a stone's throw from georgia's border with russia that scientists believe line was first produced some eight thousand years ago. today wine is the country's third biggest export german owned short man winds now fill about one and a half million bottles a year ninety percent of it for exports western europe used to be the firm's biggest market but that's not changing fast these fires started six hundred photos

up there oh it's all of the parts for export and before i go to china. this goes to kazakhstan and from kazakhstan border both to try and know. adopting e.u. standards has opened doors and not just in europe other countries are taking notice of georgian wine the winery manager tells us how our free trade deal with the e.u. has affected day to day business our border is here and all and. it's march better for to make business for european countries same standard same. documentation and same papers. the fall of the soviet union for living standards in georgia nosedive in recent years tensions with russia traditionally georgia's biggest markers and political instability have made for a toxic mix. to that georgia's location more than
7:44 pm
a thousand kilometers from the nearest e.u. member and it's little wonder that unemployment has remained high. now though that country is positioning itself as a hub for the region and a gateway to europe. for chinese it's a very good abortions see georget because producing in georgia they can trade with the e.u. without any taste for e.u. it's very useful in georgia we have a very cheap labor market so for a european company it's very easy to invert georgian product and then trade back to there is contrary while talk of georgia as a singapore of the caucuses may still seem promise your new rail links to china through central asia and a new deep sea port mean the country could soon revive history as an important stage on the new silk route and a center of eurasian trade. i look forward to tasting some of the georgian wine
7:45 pm
was it for your business i mean one hundred back over to layla for some morning thank you danielle now to a long running scandal that has shaken spain stealing babies and selling them to childless couples started during the franco dictatorship and continued on to the early one nine hundred ninety s. shortly after birth doctors were falsely declared the baby's dead and then sell them the catholic church is accused of facilitating the adoption of tens of thousands of babies and they're now adults want to find out who their birth parents were but the destruction of documents is making their search very difficult. remembering her childhood makes mercedes sad her parents lied to her all her life only on his deathbed ten years ago did her father admit to her what she had long suspected he and his wife were not her biological parents. they raised me to be honest and upright and to always tell the truth.
7:46 pm
but then they did this to me. after they died mercedes began researching and found conflicting documents two birth certificates one from allah got them one from seville and two baptismal certificates she knows these documents must be forged and so the sixty year old has a devastating suspicion. i think i was stolen when i was a baby these documents are like those of other stolen children. from the one nine hundred thirty s. through the one nine hundred ninety s. up to three hundred thousand children were taken away from their parents who were told that the children had died the newborn infants of political opponents or unwed mothers were sold to childless couples who supported franco. genetic tests have
7:47 pm
proven that birth certificates were forged to conceal these dealings. mari cruz is convinced that she too was a victim of such schemes she gave birth to a premature baby in madrid in one nine hundred eighty six days after his birth the incubator was empty and she was told her son had died mari cruz and her husband wanted to see their dead baby and take it right above the knee and. they refused to show us the baby. they said it was so deformed that they didn't want to upset us. when we insisted they asked whether we had two hundred thousand pizzi ten's for the burial. in the one nine hundred eighty s. that was a lot of money. mary cruz let herself be intimidated but now she's looking for her son whom she sure was stolen from her she works in

says the parents did not agree to give these children up for adoption it was a systematic political and business measure with government and church complicity with any i don't know boy they said this is not the idea of one doctor alone. he needed officials who knew about and covered up these irregularities. evident in. the scandal involves all of spain children for money. the justice department refuses to comment. mercedes is tormented by so many questions why is she sold if so then how much did the couple who adopted her pay for her she can't imagine that the people who brought her up with so much love could have known about the crimes underlying the adoption. i think that they too were deceived i don't think they acted maliciously.

the silent film era a lot of people forget but at that time before everything was had to be in english germany was as much a center of the film world as the united states was but of course lots of changed over the hundred years and there's a great exhibit on right now. at the german film museum here in berlin and that shows the whole history of an i don't looking at it i sort of was reminded that old clint eastwood movie the good the bad and the ugly because i think we are some footage from the museum and it's really the whole he period is gone through these these really distinct times the first was their glory period in the silent era the making films like metropolis the blue angel yeah where a film stars were really international celebrities of course that all ended with the rise of the nazis and hitler essentially end up turning studios into his own propaganda machine after the war enters what i call the ugly period for they tend

to make very sort of low and t.v. sitcom soap opera as a game shows things like that it's only very very recently last couple of years that you've seen the return to form with some really high end productions particularly for television ok i just just for a second i want to go start with the your glory days for a second how important it was so far in terms of cinema history they were key i mean as i said the silent era they were really a center for for for film are even i mean look at guys like fritz lang who was one of their standard directors and he invented whole film genres i mean dr mobutu's as a great example is a mystery to all of the old the first ever mystery thriller and it really set the path for a whole genre. if you use that the time what was cutting edge special effects i mean take a look at this. he would of course a lot further with metropolis which was really groundbreaking way ahead of its time . ok. and

then of course the blue angel the roof a film that introduced the world to miley and he took it he got her singing year just listen. to. their. mind then. yeah and that film the blue angel was probably the last great film of that period from hoover before the nazis came to our well how did react to the rise of hitler basically they collaborated i mean a lot of the great german directors and of course most of the jewish filmmakers and writers escapes the lot of them when end up in hollywood the ones that were left directors left here in germany guys like fight holland and they collaborated they basically took over nazi propaganda nazi racist ideology and incorporated that into their into their films that was the case with five hala but was also the case with a lot of other directors of the period i think we have some footage of some of the

some of the ones who were some of the greatest collaborators those tories here's fight scene here of course with goebbels and with hitler then of course lenny leaf an incredibly talented director but who also made straight up nazi propaganda most famously are notoriously triumph of the will the documentary so yeah this is definitely the darkest period and with its history. i had the future where so far right now well as i said they do a lot of t.v. now basically don't have any movies anymore a lot of t.v. is soap operas game shows but in the last couple of years of us started to find its mojo again they start doing really interesting high end television productions i think it started maybe three four years ago with a production called generation war i think we have a clip of that what we what we take a look. at dolphin i'm going to damage. that kind of then i got going to try not. to this is a drama series set on the east front it's the second world war seen from

a german perspective very interesting very very powerful series. keep in mind because in person and another really interesting production is deutschland eighty three it's a spy drama this is interesting because it was the very first german series to ever be broadcast on american television. and it also won an emmy on the international emmy for best international series so you can see that these type of productions wolf is maybe starting to get back into the mode they're starting to maybe reclaim their relief storied history and make incredibly good productions again as i say mainly in t.v. but still very impressive do you think there's a shot that they might actually reclaim some of that glory that they see that maybe i'd like to see them go back into film because i knew some of the film productions that they've done have been amazing they actually have online right now streaming service and for one month as part of their anniversary you can go look some of the great old stuff online and check out some of the classics for one hundred years
