a new government they met last night at the presidential palace here in berlin a dull view but discussions lasting more than two hours chance of machall has been trying to put together a workable alliance since september selection the social democrat leader martin schultz had earlier ruled out forming another coalition with merkel's party but pressure is building on him to reconsider that position. and joining us now for more on this is our correspondent oliver salih good morning oliver martin scholtz a meeting with other party leaders of the social democrats at this hour can we expect them to give the green light for exploratory talks well this is what the whole country is waiting for at this hour will the s.p.d. will march and schultz go ahead and say yes we are ready we are willing to go into exploratory talks in spite martine scholz had stressed several times time and time again that he his party would not be willing to do so to form another government
10:03 am
after the election defeat in september so it's a very excited and decisive moment right now for the future of the government and and on the question how the government will actually look like last night was the events of last night the meeting there at trial suppose we with the president was a historic event it was the first time in post-war germany that actually the president had to step in mediating between the parties and so we had the two biggest parties there the social democrats and the christian democrats and we're now waiting to find out how they're going to move forward will martin schulz eventually say i'm in or i'm out ok and we are we're waiting for word this morning possibly in the next few hours on that but that's just the beginning of a process for the social democrats isn't it any decision has to go to the party base that's right and that might happen by the end of the week but we have to stress here that it's completely unclear what the party base will say just to get
10:04 am
started there's a lot of opposition from within the parties many people are unhappy about that u.-turn that martin shields would have to do really first of all promising not to go into government and then if he decides to move ahead and go into exploratory talks and this would be a u. turn and he would certainly have to sell this u. turn to its party base and the fear is that there might be a high price tag on it that the social democrats might try to. through more or a lot of their social democratic policies for instance getting rid of the jewel health care system that we have here in germany so those are all things that are extremely unpopular for the conservative party so the process that might follow then would take a long time we have heard leading social democrat figures already saying that they would rather try to slow this process down take a lot of time to negotiate as opposed to what the christian democrats want because they want to have a deal as quick as possible ok now
10:05 am
a lot of our european partners for germany are looking at this process and they're expressing concern asking whether germany is still a stable country in german terms that's right i mean we have an acting government government first of all so certainly there is stability guaranteed for now i think the interesting question here is what's going to happen next and what's going to happen after that if there will be another grand coalition which by the way will not be as grand as it used to be but it will have a majority and so it will be another stable government most likely but the other options that are also on the table a minority government for instance unstable what about new elections where the right wing could further gain strength so those are all options that are in the outcome of these options is very much unclear right now ok and the best possible scenario would be a grand coalition in terms of a quick fix to the situation by march sorry that could be
10:06 am
a possible scenario in case the voter base says yes in case martin schulz and committee today says yes we want to go ahead but then of course there will be a lot to negotiate as i outlined different policies and so on and so forth there's a lot of a lot of question marks really a lot of questions to be answered until then as usual thanks very much oliver. now for a look at some of the other stories making in the news at this hour. argentina's navy says it has given up all hopes that the forty four man crew of a missing submarine will be found alive efforts to locate that vessel will continue off argentina's coast it's believed an explosion onboard calls that sub to sink about two weeks ago. riot police and hundreds have clashed with supporters of the main opposition candidate in the presidential election every tuesday electoral court of fraud delays in releasing the results from sunday's election have raised suspicions of vote manipulation with ninety three percent of ballots counted the

scening and like a little release from all the pressure off the last two years of. tax on people in bangladesh and christians have been killed and where there is a lot of fear so for them to just sign hope that the pope is ok is also no doubt this visit a sign of hope for the six hundred thousand henge are living right now in bangladesh and refugee camps what are they hoping to hear from the pontiff it's also they just want the world to recognize their suffering and hopes been criticized for not going to wait out the particle spazz out they were hoping he would do that now today he wanted to king that but that the government of bahrain has told him it's not secure and that even his bishops here in in bangladesh are against it so he's now meeting dedication of eighteen people to the families from. the area where the who just are and let's see if he mentions the shot then yes that
