7:00 pm
this is day that leaders lie from germany on edge after police evacuated to christmas market after a suspect package spot panic in potsdam near belding authorities say contained
7:01 pm
nails and possibly explosives will bring you the latest also on the program. fresh pressure on the trump white house as federal investigators charge another former adviser this time it is the ex national security had michael flynn he's pleaded guilty to lying to the f.b.i. have his contact with russian officials. plus the countdown to next year's football world cup in russia begins in earnest as officials make the group stage draw in musket we'll find out how old the favorites found. on world aids day we report on the fight against the disease in south africa after his that up against denial and discrimination. and fears of a false dawn in zimbabwe as the country's new president taxies capital with cronies and generals we'll bring you the latest from harare.
7:02 pm
i'm phil graham welcome to the program we'll begin with some breaking news here in germany bomb disposal experts have secured and destroyed a package found in the town of potsdam near berlet they say the package contained nails and a powdery substance it's not yet clear whether it was part of an explosive device that was delivered to a pharmacy and parts leading police to evacuate a nearby christmas market. short while ago the country's interior minister they saw a bigger part of the interior minister of the state of brandenburg addressed the press. doesn't buy right now we're checking what this device was filled with our experts are taking it apart and we know what some of it consists of the rest now needs to be tested the question to be answered is whether this was an explosive or was the device filled with plaster or another fake material. and then of course we need to find out if it was capable of exploding. and we're only beginning this
7:03 pm
analysis now and. just what he thought about this and also the parcel looked suspicious the pharmacist noticed that it contained wires and the cylindrical object with the support of the german federal police we x. rated and confirmed that there was indeed a cylindrical object inside and it contained nails. has got the latest from the double chief political correspondent melinda cried well come melinda so the situation now is secure. yes that's what we're hearing although the police have not allowed people back into the area the area has been cordoned off and in fact the christmas market near this pharmacy was evacuated in the course of the afternoon because the police are still looking for clues in the area as a whole and undoubtedly also looking to see whether there might be other suspicious packages nearby. tell us about potsdam where this package was found.
7:04 pm
well potsdam is the former capital of the pression kings and emperors so it's the place where they had their palaces a number of sections of the city are very picturesque and it's it's a very popular tourist destination and these christmas markets they are a german tradition they've been around since the middle ages and potsdam itself just potsdam has five of them this was the largest or one of the largest it's called the market of the twinkling blue lights and hundreds of people pass through a christmas market like that every day so it is of course the kind of target that someone wanting to wreak havoc well might choose and indeed just just under a year ago there was an attack on christmas market and security since then in the country stepped up. correct an attack on one of berlin's biggest christmas markets
7:05 pm
took place just a little bit later in december than now and many of our viewers will remember a truck was driven right into the middle of the market killing twelve people all together and badly hurting fifty six the perpetrator of that attack was of tunisian origin he had sought refugee status both in italy and in germany had been turned down and then perpetrated this attack so since then as you mentioned christmas markets all over the country have been significantly hardened at that time in berlin it was possible to drive a truck onto the market that would not be possible any longer there are now concrete barriers in place at christmas markets all over the country they're heavily armed security personnel as well and we've heard from the federal interior minister that the country has taken a number of precautions in terms of intelligence and security cooperation for example between state and local officials to make sure that such an attack cannot
7:06 pm
happen again that in the context of the fact that there were some errors by security forces a year ago that lead that made that attack in berlin possible or at least facilitated it so the system this time worked no casualties but lots of people affected. that's right and this is tim works not least because of an enterprising employee of the pharmacy where this package this this apparent improvised explosive device if indeed it did contain explosives was deposited it was delivered to the pharmacy by a delivery service and some media reporting that an employee of the pharmacy then started to open the package saw some cables coming out and alerted the police so there is a thought that it could have been a nail bomb there were nails in the package but the police have not confirmed that
7:07 pm
in fact explosives were found the package was largely destroyed in a crude controlled explosion but that doesn't mean that it itself was explosive so what we heard there in the beginning from the local interior minister is essentially a warning that not too much speculation should occur about what this package really was the brandenberg and police have said the same thing they say let's wait and see we're testing it we don't know yet whether it was in fact explosive or whether perhaps it was a dummy so that is what they are looking into this evening and we were told earlier there will not probably be concrete further information on that point or on possible perpetrators the kind of suspects the police might be looking for this evening melinda curry and i thank you so much. let's pick up on the some of those fords in the comments by our local police they have been tweeting and posting updates about this object officials tweeted a short while ago
7:08 pm
a controlled detonation of the object in question has been successful then police tweeted we ask please that people refrain from speculation about the object the investigation is not yet complete meanwhile a local newspaper has been sharing photographs of the evacuation that police conducted including this one showing police i guess showing people gathered behind a cordon set up by authours his d.p.n. and newspaper also shared photos of police standing near the cordoned off areas. ok let's go to our top story now donald trump's former national security advisor michael flynn has pleaded guilty to charges of lying to the f.b.i. general flynn left the courthouse a short while ago the charges are part of the special counsel's investigation into russian meddling in america's twenty sixteen election prosecutors say he lied to the f.b.i. about contacts in russia is the most senior member of the trump team to face charges so far. to washington where we join the correspondent the cast and of
7:09 pm
naaman welcome kasten michael flynn says he's prepared to cooperate with investigators why. well it seems that the special prosecutor. has not only enough evidence to charge michael flynn but also to convict him so that flynn and his lawyers have apparently come to the conclusion it's better to plead guilty and to cooperate with miller and to get a lighter sentence for that it's also interesting that he was charged with only one count of lying to the f.b.i. the content of this column two statements he made about meetings with the russian ambassador in december after donald trump's election before he took office and then he was interviewed flynn in late january when he was already
7:10 pm
a national security advisor about those meetings and made false statements but according to some reports we've seen mullah seems to have much more on flynn and the fact that he brought only this charge to the court today could mean that. flynn has called has agreed to cooperate and that he's effectively now a witness for this investigation tell us some more about the reaction from the white house we're hearing that a lawyer and the trumpet ministration are saying that nothing about general flynn's plea implicates anyone else. that is true on the face of it that's absolutely true michael flynn himself in a written statement said today that he assumes full responsibility for his mistakes and rejected what he called false accusations that he committed treason but still that doesn't mean that this doesn't affect donald trump or the people around him
7:11 pm
jarrett cushnie his son in law and advise and also the attorney general jeff sessions have had problems. remembering details of their meetings with russians in the past other people might also be implicated and let's not forget donald trump himself also has to deal with the fact that there's a question of whether he committed obstruction of justice when he first tried to get the then f.b.i. director james called me off flynn's back and later fired call me because he wasn't happy with the way the investigation is going so it's quite clear that robert is not done yet here and that should still be some cause for glory for the white house and it just sort of going back on of the background to this day the impression that we get is that he sort of circling to get trump but that's not necessarily the case is this this is not necessarily about the president. no it's not necessarily about the president himself especially when it comes to dealings
7:12 pm
with russia of course we don't know that especially if at some stage decides that he will actually look into the dealings of the trump business with russia we don't know much about the facts there yet so i cannot rule out that at some point on a trump might be in the focus off and doesn't vest a geisha but right now it's mainly about the people around him and of course then once again the question of how the president lay to deal with that investigation and the question if he committed obstruction of justice when he tried to influence james komi and later fired him is one that still stands here. and the light it self there that the general lied to the f.b.i. about his contacts with russia is this a lie that was that was told while he was in office before or during the miller investigation. this was
7:13 pm
a lie he told while he was on when he was already an office after trump's inauguration so around the twenty fourth of january he made those statements when interviewed by the f.b.i. but of course at that time there was no investigation that was still an f.b.i. investigation led by james komi and then of course james comey was fired and that's triggered the installation of a special prosecutor. who is now giving donald trump so many addicts because of phenomena in washington d.c. thank you. now the draw for world cup for twenty eighteen a group stage has that taken place in moscow all thirty two participating teams now know who they will face next summer in russia the draw which happened inside the kremlin palace was a glitzy affair featuring music and dance before getting down to business russia were drawn first into a along with egypt or of why and their opponents in the opening match saudi arabia
7:14 pm
. seven out of the draw a sat so we can take a moment to look over all groups in full on expat from d w sports is here to just talk us through it welcome yannick will start off with group a it's host russia along with saudi arabia egypt and order go yannick russia's got to be happy with this group doesn't i think i will for sure could've been a lot tougher for russia that's for sure why they aren't the force they once were saudi arabia they just change coach and egypt are playing their first world cup since ninety nineties i think russian fans will be confident of going through into the knockout right but it's best take a look at group b. group a we have european champions portugal spain morocco and iran there so how do you see this on a first looks tough portugal and spain being in the same group has to be tough but
7:15 pm
i think morocco wakeling aranda could surprise a few people a very well organized under coach colors curious but i think portugal and spain should be going through in this one group c. now here's one for us to keep our eyes yanick your socceroos are in there but they're up against france peru and denmark second place up for grabs here i think it has the france clearly the best team in this group and then i think it's peru denmark any of those teams can go through in second but i think will be in second ok let's have a look at group d. group includes argentina reuters a twenty four team iceland. croatia and nigeria as well intriguing setter i think so this is my pick of the bunch i think argentina are probably the favorites they have leona messi of course but they were unconvincing in qualifying i think any of these teams can go through the knockout rounds and that's what makes it so interesting for me now group a face sees the heavyweights of brazil against switzerland to costa rica and
7:16 pm
serbia so brazil five time champions this is going to be easy for them as it should be to be fair i think brazil the clear favorite stop this group and then second place likely between switzerland and costa rica ok on to a group f. topped by germany the defending champions will open up against mexico before they take on sweden and south korea is going to be playing sailing onic a first look at qana looks like planes flying for journey they should be top again but i mean mexico are a strong team sweden of course knocked out italy south korea perhaps not as strong as they used to be but previous semifinalist so it could be a tricky group for germany for sure. here let's have a look at the group g. in group g. we have belgium joined by tunisia and england so we're looking at a group here with two clear favorites it looks pretty straightforward to me england belgium should be the two teams going through which finishes on top will be decided by the game between those two i think paramount have an early flight home ok
7:17 pm
finally group h. this one headed by poland and rounded out by senegal colombia and japan in there as well this just this look sort of even it kind of does i mean looking at it first look for sure but poland was strong in qualifying colombia have some nice players in the squad and i think it's the same as group g. i think poland and colombia should be on top japan senegal going home early from alex perry thank you for that much more on this on our web site d w dot com forward slash sports so with the groups now a draw to the teams counting down until kickoff and we show it has been out gauging the mood amongst russian fans. it's minus seven degrees celsius in moscow but that doesn't stop the amateur football team. they play at least once a week no matter what the weather. on the morrow he has been playing with the team
7:18 pm
for two years he's a school sports teacher but on and off the pitch soccer has always been his passion . both around the world and here in russia football is the game of the people you have to strike shoot beautiful goals we may not be at the world cup but we definitely try to play an elegant game of over seven hundred thousand tickets to the world cup in russia have already been sold so far about half of them have gone to the country's own fans including alex on the. list there are reminders of the upcoming event daughter it across moscow even a countdown to the kickoff. and the majority of russians feel positive about hosting the world cup this coming year. it's a good thing of course a lot of tourists a lot of guests will come we're always happy to have guests but i think. it's a serious major event and i know that a lot of people are already buying tickets online people here are definitely
7:19 pm
looking forward to the world cup. the world cup has given a boost to the infrastructure of cities like. and wonderful stadiums have been built now the guests just have to arrive. in. the city of moscow has been feverish lee preparing as well investing one and a half billion euros to improve pedestrian zones and roads. in cooperation with the city has even given one of its metro trains a make over it will be spreading the soccer spirit across moscow until the end of the world cup. but alex on that and his team mates won't be needing any encouragement when it comes to the soccer spirit today they're watching a game at a teammate's local bar. alexandre has been an avid football fan since he was six he'll of course be back in his home
7:20 pm
team at the world cup and will be watching the draw closely. with the hosts so the main thing is for us to at least come in first or second in a group we hope that the russian team will end up in an easy group the whole country is hoping for an easy group. the russian national team currently has the lowest ranked of all the world cup participants but no matter who wins fans like alexandre can still enjoy a month of the beautiful game. let's go live to moscow where we find that russia bureau chief welcome yuri what are russians think about their team's drawl. highfield wala first are told to leave for russia we'll be joined in group a by saudi arabia egypt and europe way so saudi arabia is well let me say an interesting partner for russia to reach one
7:21 pm
rich in natural oil who is going to play against russia who is also rich in natural gas so people here are joking joking who will be offering more money to buy referees however after a disappointing performance at the confederations cup last summer russia's coach stunned casso who will be confident of progressing to the last sixteen when it really matters they will kick off with a tournament against the saudia at the saudis on june fourteenth and organizers happy about how this evening's events happened yeah well it's a very difficult to say right now in december this year how russia will be next to june and what the country will make a good host or not depends all know what expectations you might have off this so-called rehearsal of the confederation cup this year we can say yes russia can can and will do everything to provide the safety to full and fair world cup twenty
7:22 pm
eighteen but don't forget phil russia will also be holding a presidential election just three months ahead of the world cup nobody really expects and a dramatic changes after this election but then again if the protest the protestors were to take to the streets this is the asian could in fact taint. and how important is this world cup for russia on the day for president person. it's very important for president putin russia spent a lot of money russia stadiums are ready problems are more likely to arise from poor infrastructure here in moscow for example a baptism of fire for them of eight at luzhniki stadium ended in cows for tens of thousands of fans almost eighty thousand people came to the game just done weeks ago and after the match they had to walk several kilometers to leave the stadium it took them up to two hours to get to from there enough to solve
7:23 pm
a russian prescott described it as mismanagement a complete disaster but the officials admitted mistakes and promise to that all or else it will be fixed for putin it's very important he can now provide his country show his country in a good light let me call it this way. not as aggressive as aggressor but as somebody who threw can show the best side of the most attractive side ten ok your assessor in moscow thank you. you know how i'm free is that here and it seems brussels is getting tough on clear when it comes to helping out the latest loan trollish yes that's right phil the european union has now decided that will hold back the latest installment of the low interest one point eight billion euro known to ukraine saying that the non e.u. member is not proceeding fast enough with agreed reforms the e.u. says here made lots of progress implementing wide ranging reforms but not enough to
7:24 pm
release the last allocation of six hundred million euros a year was not specific about which policies have not yet been implemented though ukraine is battling an economic crisis triggered by a kremlin backed war to the east they use announcement comes off ukrainian president petro poroshenko as participation at an economic summit in brussels. well if dance is partial take over all of it is still not a done deal now the european commission is giving the german kariya more time to revise its plans to ensure it complies with e.u. competition law it's got until the twenty first of december to do so well about in subsidiary the austrian airline in iquique could be up for grabs lufthansa is facing pushback from competition authorities over that part of the sale that's prompted british airways owner i agee to consider a fresh bid for it that wants nicky's eighty one aircraft and the associated landing slots for a purchase price of two hundred and ten million euros. if your cities well are
7:25 pm
you will no doubt be painfully aware of the fact that property prices have been rising for years in many metropolises that often means that many long time residents are driven out of their homes as investors move in so how does a city actually belong to the citizens well for many living in their city has simply become unaffordable so we took a look at the situation right here in berlin. every kind in ballet and every tenant if you're paying rent you are at risk. if you pan there's no right that guarantees everyone can live in city centers. and that of course the city must be there for those who live and work in it otherwise it'll stop being a city that's i. who does a city belong to and who can afford to live in it a common topic among berliners in the working class quite spec district many
7:26 pm
residents live on modest incomes so they're upset about the current push towards modernization which could end up doubling their rents but that's the plan for real estate firms like phoenix play house the tenants so they can re rent flats or sell them. the companies don't like to be named and shamed the shareholders don't like. the government and the senate who are doing nothing about this need our vote and we need to shout more to them about doing something about it to maintain the mix. in the city. when investors are lured by internet ads if you realise that others are losing their homes and it's not only the real estate that's being dressed up the publication of the paradise papers reveal that phoenix prey had concealed rental income to the tune of millions of euros many berlin homes are registered to subsidiaries on jersey
7:27 pm
a tax haven. in the past few years berlin real estate prices have risen steadily people from around the world want to invest here the austrian company s in gay started buying up houses and commercial properties in the city more than ten years ago. this is even though it's still quote unquote cheap compared to other metropolitan cities and we forecast that berlin will make this legion so if you believe it will happen and you compare it to other major cities then you'll see there's still a long way to go. for urban ologists this conflict between investors and renters is detrimental to cities in the long term. busy and us to things that have yet to what we're seeing is that these exploitative strategies are diametrically opposed to the city's interests and needs and that the solution is relatively simple limit those market forces. some say cities should belong to everyone because houses aren't just investments they're people's homes.
7:28 pm
have announced he fell out of the thank you this is they don't leaders lie from but i'd still to come to dial and discrimination in south africa on world aids day we look at the obstacles in the fight against hiv aids. on hopes of democratic change in zimbabwe come to a sudden halt says the country's new president has his government with members of the military and sana yeah loyalists you'll hear from harare. today sat international i'm to world news i'm culture on the way. publishing real stories of close to kim and feagles house of music this time
7:29 pm
german poet you know and one. german rapper fresh. and the singing fish and me on my last singing. really you. just thirty five minutes are done. i'm a mother like two billion other mothers around the world i have one wish the best for my child. but in this is selling t. in which breastfeeding is often frowned upon and god's will for me to abound with profits is more important than my baby's well being how do i know how to make the right decision. move starting december ninth on d. w. . they now look like. they know what we think.
7:30 pm
and soon they'll even know how we feel. well i'm not a real person i'm still just a piece of software. scientists around the world are working to measure our emotions. so hopefully i can be a helpful piece assaulted. a virtual person as a therapist or a robotic as a teacher neither would have human empathy. what does a machine need to do to create empathy and a medical context when i disclose more information to a person or to computer in this case algorithms instead of feelings measuring emotions starting december sixteenth t w. this is data leaders lie from about and i feel gail these are our top stories at this hour police in the german town of pottstown have destroyed
7:31 pm
a suspect package sent to a pharmacy in a controlled explosion it has now been revealed that they contained nails and cables that the batteries on the fire were also has evaporated and they have a christmas bucket as a precaution. and former u.s. national security advisor michael flynn that's. if you're guilty to lying to the f.b.i. that's after he was charged as part of the special counsel's investigation into russian meddling in the twenty sixteen u.s. election. now zimbabwe's new president comes in man and god has revealed his cabinet today to keep posts of god to senior members of the military the president also reappointed figures from robert mugabe's discredited government as you can imagine the line of past drawn considerable criticism zimbabwe's new foreign minister is simply ceased to morrow he's the major general who went on state television last month to announce the military's takeover which ultimately led to robert look obvious removal a man god while becoming president air force commander parents sherry becomes agriculture minister that's
7:32 pm
a vital job given zimbabwe's controversial land reform program. d.w. correspondent privilege it was a very it joins us now from zimbabwe's capital harare welcome privilege so president my god promised a new era for his country when he was inaugurated last week now we see some of the same old faces and the army what signal is he sending. you know. when you know what to the shorter they were not expecting that you could go that route because you use promise that you know gratian was to you know come up with a different style of governance than what the previous administration of prison can be. so. it seems as if that be big time for the voice for the people that you know deem to you know ascend to power. if you look at the
7:33 pm
inclusion of the true me senior figures in the cabinet parents usually and. it's surprising because. they are coming out of the political circles in the coming from the military and you know people have been discussing about it to say that these are wrong signals considering that in the past the army was also a pillar for prison and got this part and it's important for people outside the country i think to remember that even though my god we're effectively out regarding they were still in the same party yes it is just a change of phrase. you know the jokes that are floating around now to see it's an old car that is just you know what. it
7:34 pm
is to the same budget and it is just the change of the end sought if it was stuttering it was continue to start because it is just a new driver that is given an old car so any word that new policy is perhaps taking the country in a different direction getting the country's agriculture moving again. so far there's not been any clear pronouncement is to the direction in which this government is going to take. us president from is that you eat ground running the only thing that we have seen right now is your storage images that e.c.a. the us going to come out with a leaner cabinet you only cut down cabinet with ten ministerial posts and also call for those who extend izing funds to ten inches about which failure to do so you know the next three months they'll be prosecuted but it is to their policies
7:35 pm
we use it to announce any policies you find that most of the things that are being right now even announcement of this cutting it was just through a press statement and does not think it is not interface with the nation or immediate to say ok this is the direction in which we don't want to take we saw delegations that have come the chinese way year two days ago they have promised support to a year the americans so. in terms of international support this seems to be an appetite but if this is only going to work if the government gives positive signals to the debt original it is going to take the right data service make a good provision was on very harari fact here. are say marks world aids day in many parts of the world people with hiv we're living longer than ever before thanks to better treatment nevertheless last year
7:36 pm
a million people died from aids worldwide there are significantly more i try to be an age there are significant more people with hiv and aids in africa than anywhere else in the world and in many parts of the continent suffer us not only have to cope with the illness but also the social stigma attached. they want an end to the aids epidemic protests like this one last year in the south african city of rest sites in most places of the world but especially so in africa currently more than fifty percent of the world's population with hiv live in southern and eastern africa where people with hiv and aids are heavily stigmatized . leadership is part of the problem former south african president becky for example denied the link between aids and hiv which severely limited the country's ability to stem the
7:37 pm
progress of aids many in africa around to where their positive until the first symptoms appear the fear of discrimination is great so they don't let themselves get tested and even if they do patients often don't follow through with the proper treatment that those safer sex could prevent hiv infections the use of condoms is largely condemned in catholic and muslim societies is not only puts partners at risk but also unborn children mother to child transmission is the most common way that children become infected with hiv through pregnancy childbirth and breastfeeding more than two million children worldwide are hiv positive ninety percent of them live in sub-saharan africa. as director of communications that kenya's national aids control council a welcome to day w tell us about the progress your country is making in the fight against aids and hiv and whether you believe it is being taken seriously.
7:38 pm
thank you very much and i'm happy to participate in this particular program now we have made quite some progress. because right now we have. the rates of hiv infections from mother to child that is most successful in. progress that we have made we have also seen digital reduction in each of the incidents from a high of one hundred and ten thousand people get to get a new id to about seventy two thousand so that is a forty five percent reduction in a chevy incidence also we have managed to put both one million people on hiv treatment. probably and you know now we have about one point five million people living with hiv so about of those or not lifelong treatment so in over a loud say that i think addiction the government the russian government and county
7:39 pm
governments have actually quite commitment and hiv medication of course through. development but it's now given to. people that need it feel judge we do have challenges for instance we have. which want to talk about the challenges facing people with the condition. do people with who are hiv positive are they continuing to face the stigma and discrimination in kenya. yes we do have a challenge accidental our biggest challenge is hiv stigma and discrimination because a lot of young people for instance face the stigma and discrimination in schools and these stops them from the addict medication meaning that they go. to such
7:40 pm
a time when they go back home. school holidays that it's made then resume their. dogs and you know that leads to action. on supposition and sort of you but if you when you make an interesting and important important point so i just explain to us what's going on the the children go to school and what why did i take these these these drugs holidays what what why did i stop taking. drugs. because especially when they get to school today because so. is that question why do you keep taking drugs what i did drugs for and you know right now most of the. people living with hiv did not actually contact the disease they were born in that and therefore when that. young people. are touching.
7:41 pm
a lifelong condition that they feel. it's a disadvantage i suppose what exacted then these kind of young people from taking. john. from kenya is that national aids control council frank you so much for joining t w. thank you very much. the pope has a finally use the word for him on his tour of asia he was meeting with ranger refugees in bangladesh would flood violence and made my pope francis's faced criticism for not using the word publicly during his visit to my minnow this week. a gesture of acknowledgement perhaps foreign to these re-injure refugees they are recognized in their homeland meon mar the country they were forced to flee one by one they lined up to meet the pontiff many told him of their plight this moving encounter long anticipated in france as his visit to the region the suffering of the minority
7:42 pm
group forcing the pontiff to walk a diplomatic tightrope today compassion took the place of diplomacy. we will not close our heart. we will not lose to the other side. the presence of god today is also called ranger. the small group of refugees traveled from bangladesh's border to see the pope in the capital dhaka. the pope said to me that he will pray for us as much as he can he said he would do whatever he can and with allah's help all my troubles will go away he asked me not to lose patients. the refugees francis met came from sprawling makeshift camps like this one. more than half a million people have fled here to escape persecution in neighboring man mark francis isn't scheduled to visit. earlier in the day thousands turned out to see the
7:43 pm
pope ordained sixteen new bangladeshi priests. a sign of the relative freedom the church enjoys here but it's a freedom that can't be taken for granted christians are often persecuted in this region it's for fear of their safety that france's had until now not referred to the ranger by name. we don't expose ourselves patterson has just returned from bangladesh welcome. we over the last two days of the media we we are we have made much of whether or not the pope uses the word right hidden shit or . do the right hinges care. i think they do because it means recognizing them as a people they identify themselves as a distinct ethnicity belonging to a certain people and this is something that my own mar is denying them because for
7:44 pm
the government and the military in my own mar they are illegal immigrants from bangladesh they are referred to as bengalis and it doesn't matter that for centuries they have now been living in rakhine state in my own mari this is for many the only home they have ever known but you know in fact they are stateless because neither recognized their not recognized in bangladesh the country where they sought refuge so is the thing that's been there for hundreds of years it just whenever we talk about these sort of. social things that these are things are so deeply ingrained i'm going to ask you to source on this up in about forty seconds but if you have been in me in mar for hundreds of years where does this aversion to them where does this persecution stem from i mean i would basically call it the rise of intolerance the not acceptance of the other we see that in many countries
7:45 pm
across the globe we also see it in my own mark and i mean we did have a history of repression of my own ma we had a military regime oppressing buddhists you know we had a revolution of buddhist monks at some point in this time and now you know that things are free it's the other the one that is not mainstream in this country that you know it's rejected to oppression but everything was supposed to get back. where some sushi came in yet she seemed quite reluctant to deal with this problem directly i mean you know this problem has been there for many many decades and only now with more freedom you know there is also an acknowledgement it's the international media attention going to watch this whole issue and the struggle has been there for a long period of time but now it has you know broken out its people trying to
7:46 pm
acknowledge we are a people too and if everybody is now you know having more freedom in this country so why not we and of course we have seen that there is also a militant element within the range of community and there were attacks on representatives of the mayan mar state police and military and then we have seen what the united nations have called ethnic cleansing you have been to one of these refugee camps in bangladesh and it's just very mind that. has brought these people in and give them a home of sorts described to us the sorts of conditions in which the it's mind blowing you know you walk in there and i've seen many refugee camps in my life throughout the globe but this one just the suddenness of the influx you know when you walk through there you literally see. waste water feces going past you kids playing there. electrons being built right next to him or to

palms bringing drinking water you see a lot of cases of acute watery diarrhea because of the very un hygiene the conditions in the cans and it's just the she is sized and growing by the day these refugee camps in could to prolong and also the refugees that the pope met today they were from by the kali camp which hosts about three hundred fifty thousand people at the moment and you know they're chopping down what's in scraps and bushes . and it's a. nature reserve right next to it in this nature reserve is basically that machine a little bit more every day because more people are coming still it used to be fifteen thousand per day at the peak but now we still have a couple of hundred every day ok it's good for you to sort of just put a human face that's under president thank you so much. this day w. still to come germany's public service the broadcaster i are they his council they broadcast of live concerts by british music musician roger waters x.

a simple but for companies is sharing less about caring and more about getting your data we take a look in this next report. because it's your telephone number. yes. is this your profile picture yes. all this information can be seen on the internet. customer data made publicly accessible this is bike sharing we asked a volunteer demit to test rental for registration by smartphone is quick and easy and it just one euro for thirty minutes it's a bargain but what damage ten other customers don't know is that their data is not secured it's available online. with just a few clicks investigative journalists from very in broadcasting were able to easily find the names numbers and profile picture of users from around the world
7:50 pm
they even found movement data including of our test subject damn it. is this way you've just been oh my god yes what do you think of that not good in fact it's terrible after all i'm paying them to use the bike and i'd expect my data to be safe. oh by excess the security gap has been fixed the bike sharing business is booming almost all the big providers come from asia with two million bikes it's practically raining two wheelers in beijing the bicycles can be parked anywhere which is very appealing for customers. this summer germany got in on the craze too like here in munich and berlin suppliers underbid each other offering ever lower prices or are the real endings from customer data instead. you have less data from customers and you can
7:51 pm
call the right data or up at the right moment and match advertising precisely to the customer that's what makes this information so valuable for advertisers and the movement profiles can be sold to brokers and for a lot of money for them in a good. but it's likely most people will be more annoyed about all the bikes left lying around on land in the water and in the air. back over to phil now in a row over art and anti semitism phil thank you now after protests from the general public or germany's public broadcaster a r d has decided to end its association as media partner for roger waters tour next year the former pink floyd member is a supporter of an organization called b.d.s. which pressures artists and musicians against performing in israel it's also been accused of being anti-semitic. roger waters founding member of one of the world's most critically acclaimed rough bands pink floyd is

john. madonna and nick cave are against the call to boycott israel performed in israel this year as part of a stand against what he says is an effort to censor musicians. a number of public broadcasters in germany have withdrawn support for roger waters his twenty eighteen to a will go ahead but where the waters will let the pigs fly remains to be same. as hear more from our culture editor robin merrill welcome robbery what do you think of b.d.s. well i'm in two minds about it really on the one side i believe asa should be able to perform where they want however i'm aware of the fact that sometimes boycotts like these do help change i mean we can think of the the artists. boycott in south africa during the apartheid regime however with all the pros and cons i

have to come down on the side of nick cave and the like actually because i believe you should be able to perform anywhere and indeed tom york of radiohead is another one who believes that and who indeed performed in tel aviv in july and actually said and i quote music and art is about crossing borders not building them about open minds and not close ones about shared humanity dialogue and freedom of expression and i agree with them. what you make of the german public broadcasters taking this is a very difficult one. in a way it's a debate about press freedom and some people think what the dea is doing is not adhering to press freedom on the other hand a lot of people think it's correct that public funds shouldn't be used to promote roger waters who supports this controversial move movement b.d.'s it's a cause particularly here in germany a very sensitive topic which will continue to be debated for months if not years

ahead so on a local level this dispute has affected a festival here in berlin yeah this is actually particularly sad because it's come inside germany if you like this the pacu tool festival which is subsidized by the local government here is an indian independent music festival it's meant to build bridges between cultures and this year an israeli artist called rich cohen performed at the festival not a problem for all the other artists except that risk going up five hundred euros from the israeli embassy to pay for travel costs now the embassy logo was on the pop culture website it's called the attention of b.d.s. they wrote to a lot of the other people who are meant to perform there and eight of the acts decided not to come and perform there they had nothing against this artist posts a rift coming south but they they decided that they didn't want to support what
7:56 pm
they called an oppressive regime who was sponsoring the festival i mean i think it's a shame myself that political platforms seem to be used by you know in the music industry in their own interests you know rob america thank you. now here's a reminder of our top story at this hour police in the german city of pottstown have destroyed a suspect package in a controlled explosion contained nails and fireworks was delivered to a pharmacy in the town of horses evacuated at a nearby christmas market as a precaution and former u.s. national security advisor michael flynn has plenty. guilty to charges that he was facing and from the special counsel investigation into russian meddling in the last years a us election that's set up today. polish
