but you are still black you're also. starting december tenth. this is deja news coming to you live from berlin alison in stage a deal of rage in response to president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. hundreds of protesters clashed with israeli security forces in the west bank causing stick
1:01 pm
to the streets in gaza and in jerusalem people are gathering at the mosque we go live to jerusalem also coming up. from the. britain and the european union make progress in their blogs the talks leave commission president. and prime minister to resign may say it will allow them to move to the next phase of negotiations. also coming up how do you harness the power of the sun we visit a school in india attracting people from around the was with the promise to teach them how to do just that. and the bobsled a treat a team that's become the pride of nigeria as the country makes its first ever appearance at the winter olympics. and naples celebrates as unesco as the city's own version of the pizza to its world edited. list.
1:02 pm
a warm welcome to you. two days after the us present donald trump said he recognized as the capital of israel clashes have broken out between palestinians and israeli forces in bethlehem police have fired tear gas at people who gathered after friday prayers to protest against the u.s. dish decision israel's government has stepped up security in the country after a palestinian group scored for a day of rage trumps policy shift has caused international outrage. for the very latest let's go to our correspondent my a swedish she is standing by for us in jerusalem hi my or first of all tell us what's the situation like there where you are.
1:03 pm
the damascus was one of the entrances to the old city and compared to some other places around the country where there are clashes happening this is probably one of the calmest sites where there are where there are unrest and where there are protests happening but we've still seen the police i get rather aggressive trying to clear out the side of the protesters come back and continue to chantrey seen a lot of people running around we've seen i believe two or three people injured at least one are arrested so while things seem to be rather tightly controlled there are some flare ups happening no major injuries or deaths yet thank goodness but things are tense things are tense and protests are taking place in many parts of the palestinian territories walter is at the core of the palestinian outrage from what you're hearing there. well this is this all has to do it with jerusalem and who the city belongs to and it's hard to understand exactly where this comes from without knowing the entire city of jerusalem and the history of the peace process
1:04 pm
negotiations between the israelis and the palestinians but this is such a city this is a city with such cultural and historical and religious background that is so meaningful to all of the groups who live here that it's really sort of the crown jewel and it was supposed to be one of the final status negotiation elements of whatever peace process was happening at the time and now trump has come in and said this belongs to israel and taken that off the table and the palestinians feel that they've been cheated out of what should be at least in part their capital of their future state that seems to me given mr crumb's decision that the u.s. can no longer be an honest broker in this conflict is that what you're hearing as well. well this has exposed what a lot of the palestinians and arab partners in this negotiation have feared for a long time they often assume that even though the u.s. has been positioning themselves as a neutral broker in these negotiations that in fact the u.s.
1:05 pm
was always on israel's side and this move on trump's part has confirmed this in their mind meaning that they do they will not consider the u.s. to be actual partner in these negotiations anymore and cannot take the lead anymore because they seem biased in their minds of course this was always true that u.s. was on israel's side but now this is just confirmed to us. in jerusalem thank you very much for that. the european union and britain say they have recent agreement on breaks that will allow them to progress the next round of talks u.k. prime minister terrorism and the european commission president. said that agreed on key issues such as rights for citizens in the u.k. and guaranteeing no hard border between northern ireland and the republic of ireland now they'll move to negotiations about the future of trade relations we talk to our brussels correspondent in just
1:06 pm
a moment but first this report both sides are calling it a brics it breakthrough capping off a week of drama purchased prime ministers to resume a arrived early at the european commission her goal saving the talks on her country's exit from the e.u. a short meeting with european commission president include younger followed and then the two emerged to make the big announcement we have been able to make sufficient progress to ensure that we can now move into the second phase of the negotiation between the united kingdom and the european union of twenty six. may and june to say there's been progress on a major stumbling block how to manage the future border between the u.k.'s northern ireland and the ease republic of ireland has been a particularly tricky subject many fear a hard border separating the two with border guards could plunge the north back into turmoil by undermining the belfast agreement it ended decades of sectarian
1:07 pm
violence in the region. in northern ireland we will guarantee there will be no hard border and we will uphold the belfast agreement and in doing so we will continue to preserve the constitutional and economic integrity of the united kingdom. but e.u. chief bracks in a go shatzer michel barnier sorting out the store on the issue will need special talks to citizens. in northern ireland's democratic unionist party has stood in the way of an agreement so far that support is vital to may's minority government and even now they're not satisfied with what's been agreed so far. but the talks can still proceed from here that's the e.u. leaders sign off on the deal at a council summit next week. and the beauty of macsoftware and joins me now on this story max into president after this agreement a lot of questions remain unanswered specially on northern ireland progress then
1:08 pm
has really been made there describing it as a breakthrough. right there has been some progress in the sense that the outline what they want to have in the end and that is no hard border between northern ireland and ireland and that is good news of course for the people in ireland but the question is how do they want to do that and you know there are only two known ways of doing this at the moment unless you're really creative in the first one is you a line you can trade rules or rules to those of the european union and then you don't need a border between or a hard border between the u.k. and the e.u. so you wouldn't need that border between northern ireland and ireland either and if that's not possible then at least you try to align the rules of northern ireland to the ones of the european union and you push the border from the inside of ireland to the outside of ireland the problem here of course is and we just saw that in the report that you have the democratic unionist party in northern ireland that is its
1:09 pm
creation basically its real reason to be is to have the union with the u.k. so having a border between them in northern ireland and the rest of the u.k. is something they will not accept so you know what i'm saying this you realise the goal is clear but how they will get there is completely unclear. but another very contentious issue max has been citizens' rights now both sides are saying citizens' rights will be preserved will deliver a certainty to britain's living in the e.u. and european nationals living in britain. now this seems to be a point where they really did make some progress it appears that the ukase willing to accept jurisdiction of the european court of justice over the e.u. citizens living in the u.k. that was non-negotiable for the european parliament which is very important in this whole process also it appears that you citizens in the u.k. will keep their status after the u.k. no longer is part of the european union they can even bring their families over to the u.k. and there are more details like that but it appears when we talk to some politicians
1:10 pm
in the european parliament that they are satisfied with what they have seen which is important because the european parliament announced that they would be very strict on this matter and those we talked to so far as said ok this seems to be enough and they will have a vote on that next week in their plenary session in strasbourg so that the silk would break through allows the next phase of talks to start a big that talks and that a focus on fred that next phase that what can we expect. now that's very important also for the ireland border issue because if you don't know what the exact relationship is going to be between the u.k. and the e.u. you don't know of a hard border will be necessary or not take the case of switzerland for example it's not part of the european union that the line every piece of legislation they produce on e.u. legislation so that means you don't really need a hard border that's something that might be possible to but it depends on the future relationship the trouble here is that negotiating free trade agreements is
1:11 pm
a very complicated time consuming been negotiating with japan now with a result but that was very quick and here we have less than a year at least to go she ate the outlines of a of an interim traditional agreement that will maybe give them more time to negotiated maybe two years more still very tight time schedule of very complicated so that's why many here in the e.u. say that the hard part is going to start now we just had the easy part right now right max still fun in brussels thank you very much for that. christopher joins me now on of course we've been talking about this hot border in iran hobbled of being where you have strict border control as crystal of this issue also has implications for business that's right i'm reading seamless cross border traffic is immensely important to companies and people in the republic of ireland a member of the european union and northern ireland which will leave the block with
1:12 pm
the rest of the u.k. now if today's general agreement applies to goods and services as well still needs to be are and out of the thousands crossing the border every day the news is big. pharma john sheridan is used to crossing from northern islands to the republican back it's seamless there's no sign of an international front anywhere cross ball to commuters and business owners like john are afraid of what breaks it could mean for them after all northern ireland voted to remain before the agreement was announced this morning john feared what a potential hard border could bring. it would have meant customs duties and vehicle checks slowing businesses down on both sides of the border. and of course that wouldn't have been for the first time mona flint is eighty years old she clearly remembers the old boulder checks you know and customers have to
1:13 pm
come at her request was for eleven o'clock at night he would come and stamp the book. they let you back and. back again on either side of the border because they were north tyneside. crises agreement will come as a relief to border residents like mona and john for now it seems the status quo will remain in northern ireland it will still leave for the rest of the united kingdom but will keep e.u. regulations to prevent customs checks so-called regulatory alignment both the republic of ireland and britain of praise the deal to avoid a hard border but for britain the greatest challenges over brics that are yet to come. or for some more analysis let's bring in our markets correspondent. frank for. people on the trading floor think are these challenges lying ahead.
1:14 pm
well yes they are many people here are quite aware that phase two talks of breaks it the one about the future trade relations will most probably much more complicated than the phase one talks many many detail is have to be sorted out and you know just think about how long it took for the europeans and the can maybe ns to forge out a trade deal and this deal with the canadians doesn't even comprise services but services the services sector financial services the banks their passport rights that's very very important for the u.k.'s government and to sort this out we will be difficult the european central bank will have to take a close look in future on the business of banks operating here in europe on the continent but the hardcore brics the tears of course hate everything that smells
1:15 pm
too much like european jurisdiction in a british affairs so we are facing a lot of a lot of talks about this in the coming months now despite these unresolved questions market sentiment seems to be quite upbeat tell us more. well yes check out the german dax the share index here in frankfurt it's got quite a bit of momentum also thanks to those this settlement but make no mistake if you look at the british pound for example this movement today can be taken quite metaphorically the pound gained immediately after the news of the deal came out but it's given up more or less all of its gains since then it's as if investors were saying thank you for finally coming to an end with phase one but now to phase two conrad burns in frankfurt thank you. and i have more business for you
1:16 pm
a little later in the show including an inspiring story on a college in india that helps rule women from across the globe to bring electricity to their communities for now. thanks very much less articulate at some other stories making news around the wasn't french president model mccraw has been announced the winner of the two thousand and eighteen sean money prize the analyst ward is given by the german city of one hundred two persons and institutions of work for european unity over the years it's been awarded to several distinguished people including pope francis in two thousand and sixteen poland's conservatives have named a lot of its key as the country's new prime minister the former finance minister replaces beata should fall in the post critics say the leadership shakeup is meant to distract attention from a vote on friday on laws that would give the ruling party significant power over poland's judicial system. argentina's former president cristina fernandez decades

1:18 pm
the people of naples have long argued that their way of making pizza is the right one and took their case to the united nations. the petitioner said the traditional preparation including tossing the dough and baking the pizza over wood in a brick oven was part of italy's culture. yes yes emperor the first piece is a food that must be internationally recognized just like the other monuments we have in italy but it should be considered as a historical part of italian cuisine if we're going to go through them you know back into. the world. at unesco meeting in south korea delegates you know honestly agree that neapolitan pizza making was worth adding to the list of intangible treasures more objects are there for their craft this is probably our car about seven up here either. and it's a decision that's gone down very well with supporters in the pizza homeland. story
1:19 pm
going to a list recognition is important because it's a victory over globalization for them to the level of. the pizzas made one by one in a traditional process that pizza makers have handed down from father to son. you see them on buddy buddy. the traditional pizza margarita named after a nineteenth century queen gets by with just tomato sauce montserrat only fuel oil and basel but the global success of pizza has also left some italians shocked at the choice of toppings in other countries. i hope this will finally prove to foreigners that this is the way pizzas made without nutella or pineapple. however you like eight pieces and of eight its status is something that will have connoisseurs celebrating all over the world.
1:20 pm

that german g.d.p. could see an extra twenty billion euros a year through the deal which still has to be signed and ratified. even in today's globally linked economies women often remain the single largest untapped economic driver a college in the indian state of rajastan has made its mission to change that barefoot college is training grewal women to take control of their lives and the well being of their communities to aid organizations are now even sending women from other continents to the institution to get empowered the sun is a virtually infinite source of energy. these women have come halfway around the world to register on to learn how best to harness that power classes at the so-called barefoot college of just beginning while those who study here can actually afford shoes they can't afford much else and definitely not a house with electricity supply that's why the courses here are about solar energy
1:22 pm
systems in this particular class most of the students come from africa during a six month course the women learn how they can use solar energy to improve their lives in their villages. doing their minister and family in my village there are only a couple of houses with electricity. and the road well when i'm finished here my neighbors and i will finally be able to use electricity as well that a proper look on. this man started the college nearly forty years ago. a lot. more long in the beginning we also taught men but often they didn't pass their knowledge and skills on to others or they took up new jobs and moved away from their villages women are more loyal and they have fewer opportunities and would charge women about gall magicked out about what i mean what are. the college has trained over ten thousand women now who have returned to their villages you
1:23 pm
won't find a connection to an electricity grid out here but you will find mana she graduated from barefoot college a year ago and is currently on her way to meet a customer who owns a solar power unit. on her. the lights come and go there seems to be some sort of problem i don't know what it could be. manna gets to work she inspects the unit and after a few minutes she's figured it out is the power storage unit with just a few twists of her screwdriver the lights are back on. how do you put it on you can then look in our village there are about forty five houses and in twenty three of them i've installed solar electricity systems there are occasionally problems with the power storage units that's why i'm here. with bettman.
1:24 pm
