brace for more violence out of the deadly clashes sparked by trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel protesters around the world i'm watching against the united states and outpouring of anger over the u.s. president's controversial new also coming up some sibling rivalry in the bundesliga today is two of its top players go head to head in frankfurt bring you the story of the boa tang's jerome and his big brother kevin prince. welcome to the program my name sarah harmon it's good to have you with us. tension is running high in the middle east after days of protest against u.s. president donald trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel the islamist group hamas has said two of its gunmen were killed in israeli airstrikes that were carried out in response to rocket attacks in the gaza strip
12:02 pm
the palestinian health ministry said israeli bombings on friday injured more than a dozen people this comes as demonstrators and israeli forces clashed for a third day amid a wave of outrage over the u.s. decision let's cross over to jerusalem now where our correspondent paula newton elements there for us maya the region was braced for violence following trump statements on jerusalem how was it actually been there. well after yesterday as you can see behind me i'm standing at damascus gate where in jerusalem everything happened yesterday and right now it's very much a typical saturday morning with the old city is once more open people are going in and out we see both jews and muslims and tourists and cheering and leaving and everything seems very much back to normal now we know that we are expecting more demonstrations in east jerusalem later today but even yesterday the demonstration
12:03 pm
was somewhat less than expected resell the police coming in breaking up crowds the crowd reassemble the police or chase them away again and after a while it was very clear that this was not going to be a huge uprising that had been called for i must say was this because they want to look at the international political ramifications in a moment first here some reactions from around the world including a frosty palestinian israeli exchange at the u.n. last. a small group of pro israeli demonstrators. and just across from them thousands turned out to support the palestinians scenes like these on friday in london could be found across many cities. in the greek capital athens u.s. flags were burned in protest against president trump's middle east policy. in tunisia and many countries across the muslim and arab world thousands call for
12:04 pm
freedom for palestine. and in washington the u.s. president could well have seen this prayer protest from the white house. an emergency meeting at the u.n. security council the representatives of israel and the palestinians are at a distance. that you as this is to reward israelis impunity undermines and essentially disqualifies its leadership role to seek peace in the region i call on all countries all peace seeking nations of the world to join with our american friends recognize the jewel their limbs connection to israel and move your embassies to our capital. but as here the u.s. is largely alone in its decision the european allies speak out against the u.s.
12:05 pm
president's actions we disagree with the u.s. decision to recognize to resell them as the capital of israel and to begin preparations to move the american embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem it is not in line with security council resolutions and is on helpful in terms of prospects for peace in the region we encourage the u.s. administration to not bring forward proposals for an israeli palestinian settlement a settlement between the neighbors now seems farther away than i thought. my shredder is still with us in jerusalem standing in front of damascus gate there why are we just heard the u.s. looking increasingly isolated at the united nations can it still claim to play this role of an honest broker in the conflict. was a very good question sara and it's sort of the question that the entire international community is asking itself because the next question after that is
12:06 pm
well if not the u.s. than really is there another world power with the amount of heft and international might that the u.s. has that can still claim some suggest objective distance from this problem. maybe france and maybe germany but there seems to be no real heir to this position in the way that the u.s. had now of course that this move by the u.s. or by the trump administration sort of confirms in the mind of a lot of arab leaders something they had already suspected which was that the u.s. was never an impartial broker that it was always sort of subtly low key on the israeli side and now that they've made this announcement the arab league is going to be hard pressed to find a new foods third party in these negotiations if there even are any new negotiations that are going to take place on earth that's my shredder reporting for us from jerusalem thank you. here's

was dramatically busted out of a police van by a mob of his supporters. more than two months after elections here germany is inching closer to forming a government the social democrats have been meeting here in berlin to consider what key issues they'll want to take into talks with chancellor uncle americal that's after s.p.d. delegates voted on thursday to go ahead with exploratory talks party leader martin shoulder to stress the role of germany in the e.u. pledging to push for reforms that would eventually lead to what he calls a united states of europe our political correspondent thomas sparrow has been following the final hours of the s.p.d. party conference thomas good to see you the social democrats have been deciding what they're going to bring to the table when they meet with merkel it seems like they can demand almost anything they want what do you think they're going to ask for. well it depends how you see that sorrow whether whereas some people might say
12:09 pm
that they demand anything they want there are others who say that they are starting here from a different perspective from a perspective of weakness of after a bury bad result in the elections in september in any case what they have said here is that they want to first and foremost discuss what proposals they want to bring to the table and only then discuss in what form they could or could not be part of a future government when we look at their proposals i would say there are two key areas one area is social justice in other words reform in things like pensions or employment or education a second carrier is the one that you mentioned yourself europe that idea of a united states of europe which is not only a key proposal here of the social democrats but also a long term vision presented by martin shows the leader of the s.p.d. ok what does this mean for americans she needs the s.p.d. now how strong is she at the moment. she does indeed need the s.p.d. but again the conservatives would still be the strongest party in
12:10 pm
a future grand coalition if that were the case we can certainly say that merkel is weakened because of this political situation here in the country in particular because germany can't think long term until they have that formal government in place if you ask however both here at the social democrats under the conservatives they would say that in any case germany still has a temporary government an interim government and they are still working but it is clear that until they have a formal government they can they can to start thinking long term and presenting proposals in areas like europe or other international crises or also those domestic policies that many here in the social democrats have been demanding ok there's time to spare at the s. party conference thank you very much for your reporting. poland's opposition has cried foul after lawmakers took steps to place limits on the country's courts these controversial laws would give the ruling party more control over judges career's now supporters say this would help make the judicial system more efficient
12:11 pm
opponents think these laws are just another step towards our tarion isn't. dictatorship shout the opposition m.p.'s they're protesting against a controversial overhaul of poland's judiciary two bills passed by the lower house that would give politicians greater power of the courts the opposition says the changes are in violation of the constitution. they are destroying the checks and balances in our country and our forsaking europe. in the future lawmakers will be able to determine the appointment of higher educational positions as well as send a significant portion of judges into early retirement the government has justified the move saying the changes would make poland's courts more efficient and help in the fight against corruption. but today is a black day for poland's parliament since the end of communism we haven't had a situation like this changing the constitution in this way it'll make poland's justice system politically dependent to kenya. the legislation will now likely be
