jerusalem as the capital of israel protesters around the world are marching against the united states in an outpouring of anger over the u.s. president's deeply controversial move also coming up a sibling rivalry in the bundesliga today as to the tom players go head to head in frankfurt we'll tell you about the boa tang's jerome and his big brother kevin prince. welcome to the program i'm marrying a evanston it's good to have you with us. tensions are running high in the middle east after days of protests against u.s. president donald trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel the islamist group hamas has said two of its gunmen were killed in israeli airstrikes carried. in response to rocket attacks from the gaza strip and the
2:02 pm
palestinian health ministry said israeli bombings on friday injured more than a dozen people this comes as demonstrators and israeli forces clash for a third day amid a wave of outrage over trump's decision to reverse decades of u.s. policy our correspondent my ish waiter is in jerusalem and she's been following developments for us there hello to you miles so we've already seen a few days of unrest across the middle east how are things looking like today. well mary at a few moments ago there was a protest that was happening here in east jerusalem close to where i'm standing by the damascus gate but it was smaller and it was pushed back very quickly by the police and outside of that it's been a very normal saturday afternoon here in jerusalem if you had known yesterday there were protests happening you would possibly wouldn't have known that this is even
2:03 pm
happening at all it's very crowded here there are tourists coming in and out we've seen jews and muslims going in and out of the old city to pray and everything seems very calm and very normal there is not an increase of police presence today as there was yesterday when there were actually protesters here chanting and shouting against trump's announcement all right my ass a bit of normalcy returning at least for the moment do stay with us we'd like to discuss the broader political repercussions in just a moment but first here's some more reactions from around the world and at the u.n. let's have a look. ok. a small group of pro israeli demonstrates is. and just across from the thousands turned out to support the palestinians scenes like these on friday in london could be found across many cities. in the greek capital athens u.s. flags were burned in protest against president trump's middle east policy. in
2:04 pm
tunisia and many countries across the muslim and arab world thousands call for freedom for palestine. and in washington the u.s. president could well have seen this prayer protest from the white house an emergency meeting at the u.n. security council the representatives of israel and the palestinians are at a distance. that you as this is to reward israelis impunity undermines and essentially disqualifies its leadership role to seek peace in the region i call on all countries all be thinking nations of the world to join with our american friends who recognize you all the limbs connection to israel in a movie your embassies to our capital but as here the u.s.
2:05 pm
is largely alone in its decision the european allies speak out against the u.s. president's actions we disagree with the u.s. decision to recognize to resell them as the capital of israel and to begin preparations to move the american embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem it is not in line with security council resolutions and is unhelpful in terms of prospects for peace in the region we encourage the u.s. administration to not bring forward detailed proposals for an israeli palestinian settlement a settlement between the neighbors now seems further away than ever. all right so the united states isolated at the united nations. is the u.s. still a credible broker in the mideast process in light of these developments. that is sort of the low key question that's been underlying everything that's happened
2:06 pm
so far this week if not the u.s. then who really who has the international heft and presence as well as the objectivity from the situation to be a proper partner in whatever peace negotiations might still be happening and one of the things that has happened through this process is sort of confirmed in the minds of the palestinians and their arab partners that the u.s. was never really an objective partner they were always low key subtly on the israeli side but now of course the question is well then who who could do it and that's a question the still remains to be answered right now there is no peace process happening it's been stalled for many years and the white house does not seem interested at least with this announcement and going forward in the same manner as was happening before following the u.n. meeting the arab league is also going to be holding talks on this issue what can we
2:07 pm
expect to hear from them. that is a interesting question as to what the arab league can actually do and whatever they do does it really matter at this point if the u.s. is determined to move its embassy to jerusalem what does the arab league have to say about that and why does that matter if it is an interesting situation here because the palestinian cause used to be the uniting cause of the arab world going against israel for the palestinian state for a future palestinian state but now of course arab nations are trying to deal with wars in yemen wars in syria isis economic stagnation dictators being toppled from power the palestinian cause it seems simply isn't as high up on their list and they have so many other things that they have to deal with these days so whatever comes out of this meeting it does remain to be seen will that even have an impact on anything going forward all right our correspondent reporting for us from jerusalem
2:08 pm
thank you very much. now to some of the other stories making headlines this hour and iraqi prime minister haidar of bodies says his country's war with the so-called islamic state has been won he says the army has driven i-s. from the country and re secured its border with syria that after more than three years of conflict huge wildfires raging through southern california have forced around two hundred thousand people to flee their homes multiple blazes have destroyed hundreds of businesses and much of the state's valuable of a condo crop fire crews are stretched but unrelenting winds raise the prospect of the fires a lasting until christmas. investigators are looking into the role that two german companies may have played in the disappearance of an argentinean submarine the firm sublime batteries for the stricken boat and they're accused of bribing officials
2:09 pm
for recent repair work the last message from the crew suggests that a fire had broken out around the submarine battery compartment. an entire village in germany is going up for auction today with the starting bid of just one hundred twenty five thousand euros vina is a small community with just six rundown houses and live south of berlin former east germany of fell into disarray following german reunification twenty seven years ago . well more than two months after elections here in germany the country is inching closer to forming a government the center live social democrats have been meeting in berlin to consider what key issues they want to take into talks with a chance or goal that's after the as p.d. decided to go ahead with exploratory talks on a possible coalition let's listen to what party leader martin schultz had to say.
2:10 pm
everyone that gives this often the good we will focus on results in the negotiations and attempt to find ways to lead this country out of the difficult situation it's currently finds itself in. and that's why i will say again it can be annoying that we are once again called on to take political responsibility for our future after others have let is into a dead end. but we social democrats will do it on our own terms don't know about women mostly about p.b.s. here but we have another try that is free this serves all right that was yesterday leader thomas schultz speaking and our political correspondent thomas farrow has been following the final hours of the s.p.d. party conference and he joins us now for more hello to you thomas so the social democrats have been putting their heads together to decide what they're going to bring to the table when they meet with a chancellor merkel so what are their key demands. that has been
2:11 pm
the key priority here according to party leaders to try and decide exactly how their party program will be on only afterwards only after they can determine what priorities they could or they couldn't pass they will determine in watch form they could participate in a new german government as far as the key priorities are you could possibly group them into categories on the one hundred social issues they have featured here at the party conference prominently including reforms on education pensions employment a second aspect one that's particularly important for martin shows is that idea of europe they have defined themselves as germany's european party and in that sense martin shows proposal of a united states of europe is one that he will probably be mentioning a lot in the next few days it's also a long term vision for the s.p.d. as he himself also stressed at this party conference i would describe those two key areas social issues that they have been very important for the s.p.d.
2:12 pm
and also that idea of europe well thomas germany's first attempt to form a government after september elections failed and now these talks are likely to take weeks as well what does this mean for germany and perhaps more specifically for uncle americal just how strong is she right now. well the key priority obviously so try and form a stable government but leaders on the conservative side of leaders here on the social democrat side have said that's this is not about hiring off to form a government it's about forming a correct if you will formal a government based on the proposals that both parties the conservatives on the social democrats can bring to the table which is obviously that until that happens there's only a caretaker government in germany a caretaker government that probably current think long term a current plan a long time when it comes to priorities at home but also to international crises and situation that the something that is obviously affecting on that american on
2:13 pm
the so obviously why she has the priority to try to form the government a soon as possible. as thomas fair reporting for us from the s.p.d. party conference thank you. now johnny hallyday fans are paying their last respects to the singer often dubbed the french elvis they filled central paris where a funeral procession is currently underway halladay was a huge figure in france credited with bringing rock'n'roll to the country after world war two french president a monologue crumbled speak on the shots and he's a leader today halladay died last wednesday at the age of seventy four. time now for some sports news and there's a special match up in the bundesliga this weekend the boa tang darby when frankfort host byron munich brothers kevin prince and jerome batang go head to head for the first time in nearly three years. kevin prince on track to frankfort midfielder.
2:14 pm
jerome defender at byron munich the bulletins are two brothers as different as they are like kevin prince is a bit of an extrovert he's never afraid to put on a show somewhere worried his big personality would unsettle the frankfurt squad but quite the opposite has happened his leadership and self-confidence fit right alongside that of his coach not for the moves which we're going to get our chances up front we've seen byron give up a few of them if we can get a goal and go in front will make it very difficult to play against us. the other boateng brother drome is more low key he seems happiest playing at an even keel bottoms club magazine thinks it's full speed ahead pronouncing things wunderbar not everyone agrees it's been nothing for the mind i still think we haven't reached our full potential. we've got to get the guys back from long term
2:15 pm
injuries and get them back to one hundred percent their optimism. when that happens we can be satisfied not until them. that's of liens on the road to start to finish to sneak one vote saying might find satisfaction each has one winner to draw against the other. all right a quick reminder of our top story palestinian protesters have clashed with israeli forces in the west bank for a third day after u.s. president donald trump's deeply controversial move to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital this comes as israeli airstrikes kill to hamas members in perspire to rocket attacks. you're up to date now and d.-w. news will be back again at the top of the hour omarion i haven't seen thanks for watching. take.
