move your embassies to our capital but as here the u.s. is largely alone in its decision the european allies speak out against the us president's actions we disagree with the u.s. decision to recognize to resell them as the capital of israel and to begin preparations to move the american embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem it is not in line with security council resolutions and is on helpful in terms of prospects for peace in the region we encourage the u.s. administration to not bring forward detailed proposals for an israeli palestinian settlement a settlement between the neighbors now seems further away than that. will shortly the arab league which is an umbrella organization of twenty two arab states will be holding an emergency meeting in cairo i'm joined now by michael thinks she's a journalist who's in the egyptian capital ruth thanks for joining us so the arab

league has called this emergency session to discuss downturns recognition of jerusalem as israel's capital just what are they hoping to achieve at this meeting . well it seems like the most likely outcome off an evening of debate is that we're likely to see a statement old condemnation concerning the decision now the question. that you know will be asked by commentators and observers of this evening's meeting is who exactly that statement of condemnation is likely to be targeting is it israel in which case that would be an end with a lot of other statements previously made by the arab league or is it the united states and if so that route be something of a break from tradition for the arab league and it would also put countries like egypt and saudi arabia which have very good relations with the trump white house it

would be a they certainly are breaking relations for them to all right so if they do come up with this joint statement of condemnation assuming that the target is the united states just what kind of an impact would that have is this merely words or will there be some sort of policy changes that will follow from it. i think that it's been quite rare in the past that we would see major shifts of policy from individual member states in the arab league following even the most fiery statements of condemnation but that's what so called in the past generally their statements of condemnation have been in line with things that we already believe that we already know that individual member states have so for example the previous statement of condemnation was looking upon donation of the lebanese who has and condemning them as a terrorist organization if the statement today focuses on israel this is

unlikely to affect individual business deals that we secretly being debated between even countries like egypt israel which are currently debating and for gas deal that would see a pipeline go through jordan. and a statement of condemnation focusing on the united states would be highly irregular and might change some business deals from the u.s. side but don't necessarily do so by individual member states here. well specifically in egypt we've heard that the leader of the coptic church there has announced that he's not going to meet the u.s. vice president mike pence when he comes to visit egypt later this month now we do know that egypt is a key ally of the united states so just how much damage has trump's announcement under islam already caused. i think it's fair to say that it certainly put countries like egypt which have these very strong relations with the trump white house it's put country such as egypt in a very difficult position in that they have you know renewed relations with trump
