a sovereign and independent palestine. as its capital. jerusalem status is at the core of the decades long israeli palestinian conflict. israel ceased the eastern half of the city in the one nine hundred sixty seven six day war it controlled decease west before that palestinians hope east jerusalem will be the capital of their future state donald trump here on a visit to the city in may has been seen as siding with israel in the conflict by naming a united jerusalem as jewish capital. palestinian president mahmoud abbas says the move has cost the u.s. its role in the middle east peace process. that this the united states has lost its capability to be a mediator and won't have a role in the political process. he will not accept

5:05 pm
well it's difficult to say but this was no slip of the tongue for out today's meeting the one referring to jerusalem as the capital of the palestinians did not use easter asylum for out these references and this certainly will call that angle certainly. israel but other one throughout this day gave a very clear he had little interest in israeli sensibilities over this but he just underlines the very strong message other wants to give only to israel but the united states and the rest of the region that he is on the front line of supporting the palestinians and their battle to secure true east jerusalem as its capital we heard in the report the palestinian president mahmoud abbas saying that the u.s. now is out as far as he's concerned of the middle east peace process if not the united states that who do they want to take over as lead brokers. while it's united nations. mahmoud abbas said that they see the united states
5:06 pm
chooses taking over the role of the united from the united states they say that the united states are totally discredited by this move by trying to recognize through some of them in many ways i think that what we're seeing is a release of a pent up frustration over many years of what many palestinians are many arab leaders when. region perceive that washington isn't an honest broker and whether the united nations can play that role is very difficult to say given the fact that israel has been very reluctant to have any dealings with the united nations and it does take two countries to make peace but going forward the message from mahmoud abbas and many other leaders including the turkish president is the united states has no role in resolving the conflict in the middle east so muslim nations get together they get they convene this extraordinary meeting they make this declaration then watch still we expect action. well in fact you're right to many people for this this summer we just be tough rhetoric and little else but what it seems is the message from this meeting going
5:07 pm
forward is that there is going to be a concerted campaign to seek the recognition of the palestinian state as an independent country up until now people involved in the peace process has suggested that such a move wouldn't complicate peace efforts but now the sign for the message from here is that they no longer are going to wait going forward they see this is an opportunity maybe is what trump has done the galvanize support for the recognition of east jerusalem as a capital for the palestinians and an independent state so yes we expect very for there is going to be a lot of concerted lobbying campaigning and this will certainly add to the tensions with israel in the united states and many arab countries but it has to be said also key players in the arab world leaders were not here notably saudi arabia and egypt and that underlines that there are still deep divisions and differences over what is the solution to the ongoing problems of the middle east and the palestinian question norah jones in istanbul found here. now for some of the other stories

a major setback for president trump the democratic candidate doug jones as one of the u.s. senate seat in the deeply conservative state of alabama the result has a significant knock on effect in washington shrinking the republican senate majority from two votes to just one. of all the which the democratic fight back should take shape alabama was an unlikely starting point the party has not won a senate seat here in a quarter of a century. here we have just around the state of alabama though we have on the contrary the why with. the celebrations here on much to the control of the sea surrounding his opponent. airlie or in the day the republican crusader roy moore had hoped his horse named
5:10 pm
sassy would carry him to victory. it was the final bid to cast him as a thorough bred conservative in a campaign marred by multiple allegations from women claiming he had molested them decades ago when they were teenagers even for high ranking republicans moore's actions and policies were beyond the pale he believes homosexuality should be illegal and that moves shouldn't serve in congress. for donald trump the only thing that mattered was moose loyalty to his vision the president has congratulated doug jones on a hard fought victory but said votes cast for a third candidate harmed the right ten vote played a very big factor he tweeted but a win is a win not so. he has refused to concede but the
5:11 pm
votes are still coming in and we're looking at that but god bless you as you go all by give the play fury and thank you for coming tonight with not over this going thanks in part by was but it is democrats who are smiling having narrowed the republicans majority in the senate to just one day says they say a sign of success is to come in crucial elections next year. so is this really the start of a democratic fight back well let's get more on this from a political consultant to the law he's worked on the president obama's presidential campaigns. one accustomed phenomenon joins us from washington as well welcome both custom let's start with you talk us through some of the reactions to bit result in the united states. well i was as we've seen in the reports of the first reaction from donald trump on tuesday evening was quite subdued to even
5:12 pm
congratulated doug jones in some new tweets today he was already trying to argue that he knew that roy moore was the wrong candidate all along and he only supported him because he wanted to save this republican seat meanwhile the democrats of course have taken this as a signal that their attack on the trump presidency should know starts in earnest the hillary clinton the former presidential candidates tweeted that if democrats can win in alabama they can compete everywhere and presidential hopeful cory booker said rather forensically renewal of hope and the first ray of light of a rising sun so basically hoping that the democrats can rest back from the republicans soon ok let's pick up that point with jools fund is this a resurgent democratic party or is it just a bad republican candidates well i think it's both republicans obviously were
5:13 pm
mobilized remember hillary clinton had lost alabama by twenty eight points just a year ago to donald trump so democrats taking back the seat this is a huge opportunity but also looking forward to keep in mind it twenty eight hundred november twenty eighth and they will be the midterm elections and democrats actually have the chance to take back the senate where republicans now only have a majority of two votes so democrats really need to focus in on november twenty eight hundred take back those twenty five seats where democrats are for reelection win back some of those seats from the eight g.o.p. senators who are up for reelection and then of course try to stop through a legislative process some of the some of the proposals that we've seen from donald trump. just do i have he said let's talk about the the wider aspect of this how this senate result affects the balance of power in washington i mean first of all it's a huge blow to donald trump. donald trump and the g.o.p. probably can party went all in they supported the candidate financially you know donald trump reached out to his base and mobilized his supporters and i think it is
5:14 pm
a clear sign that donald trump is not getting away and as well as the republican candidate they're not getting away with the things that we've seen over the last couple weeks unfold so i do think that this sends a shockwave to to washington at the same time democrats can't let off they have to keep mobilizing and just because because they took this race doesn't mean that it's going to be easy in november because of our nominee in washington so that what you want to take on this did the republicans throw away a safe seat by choosing this flawed candidate. well there certainly did because a roy moore and his views are extreme even by alabama standards and also we still have the fact that there is an ongoing civil war within the republican party between the conservative establishment and the nationalist populist wing broad donald trump into the white house and this fight continues and it will further weaken the republican party once again the democrats of course upbeat now but they
5:15 pm
also have problems inside of their party between a more populist left wing wing and a more moderate centrist group within the party and they haven't sorted that out so they have to find a message that goes beyond against trump. point. i wonder if this is more indicative of a republican party in a terminal spiral they have they control both houses they have a president that they don't like and didn't want and they have candidates that they don't like and don't want and they're fighting each other the democrats just have to sort of sit back and let them get on with it well that's exactly what the democrats can't do they have to win on policy and they have to make arguments just like they did in the in the fight over health care this is how we see how democrats win elections and how they win policy fights when they come with arguments and make have a clear message on what's right and wrong when we look forward to the two thousand and eighteen midterm elections and then of course to the two thousand and twenty
5:16 pm
presidential elections democrats of course have to figure out personnel and have to see who they're going to put on the top of the tickets and think democrats are anywhere close to having figured that out at the same time the basis mobilized is started in january of twenty seventeen when we saw record numbers turn out in protest suit to donald trump and it's great to see at least from a democratic perspective it is great to see that so many people don't just take to the streets or take to twitter or to facebook to voice their opposition but they actually show up to vote so last point that i want to make is that in this election african-american turnout in a off year elect. it was higher than what president obama the first african-american president saw in the two thousand and twelve presidential election so this is a huge point for democrats blue insult to. queue for the cost of our nominee in washington thank you. next tuesday marks a year since a unity an asylum seeker drove a truck into crowds at a burning christmas market killing twelve people today
5:17 pm
a government inquiry has revealed serious shortcomings in the government's handling of the attack in particular the report says there should be a significantly higher compensation for victims and their family members. one year after the berlin terror attack and thoughts are still with the victims it's small money more protection more empathy that was the demand from a government report detailing the help offered to survivors and relatives of victims killed in the attack twelve people were killed and around seventy injured last december after a chew museum asylum seeker drove a truck into the crowded market almost a year on report commissioned a cutback demanded significantly higher compensation for survivors in the injured regardless of their nationality or the cause of the event the payment of ten thousand euros for a close relative is too low the report found. of course material compensation cannot replace

a person's life someone's health. nonetheless this financial help is important because it prevents people from falling into financial difficulties if. relatives of victims have criticized german chancellor angela merkel for how the government handled the aftermath of the attack in an open letter they said almost a year on we know that you haven't shared your condolences weathers either in person or in writing in our opinion this means that you are not doing justice to your office exactly a week before the one year anniversary merkel paid a surprise visit to bright shiny flats christmas market last night where she spoke to traders who lived through last year's attack next week she'll also meet with survivors and relatives of victims but while her visit was welcomed by many people at the market for others the attention from the chancellor came as too little too late. to look at.
5:19 pm
which have been knocked off course of tons is withdrawn its bid for. concerns by e.u. competition authorities now the german government says it expects nicky will fall into insolvency and its planes remain grounded at berlin's bankruptcy administrator is trying to find a new bio for austrian based nicky but so far no one else has come forward there has been interest by both. british airways. g. lufthansa had been planning to buy twenty thirty five aircraft to use for its own budget subsidiary europe wings. oh part of that expansion plans which nosediving at this hour chris of course is here to tell us more i guess the competition authority is doing its job these have been the big complaints the whole time that look fans it was getting too big at home and abroad as far as this deal with indeed and these concerns have been there all along only last friday you
5:20 pm
commissioner margaret vester said she had grave concerns regarding this deal how it would actually diminish competition and looked as i had already made concessions giving up some routes and connections in order for the deal to go through but the e.u. commission was still strongly considering a deeper investigation which would have meant a ninety day investigation into this deal after which loved ones are still would have been able to come out as the loser. so the doubts here are actually understandable as well but all in all you wouldn't say that there is a loser i mean they've got a real grip on the domestic market and prices are already going up they do they do have a grip on the domestic market they also have a grip on the on the european market prices have gone up but still love times are wanted more. wanted more he wanted more exposure more routes.
5:21 pm
and even tighter grip and as you mentioned prices have gone up and strangely enough with this deal off the table prices are not necessarily likely to go down because as you mentioned there are no real other bidders for nikki and times has actually been pumping money into nikki to keep it up in the air with the deal off the table that's going to stop now and so nicky mayer under the backups he may stop flying as soon as friday and so more flights will be taken off the off the roster and we all know how supply and demand works if there's fewer flights you know you know what that's going to do to price just briefly where does this all leave fans or does it have a plan b. and its huge. plans to take over the world that's what they claim. to says they do have a plan b. they want to grow the low cost subsidiary euro wings organically meaning buying or leasing more are craft bidding for routes but naturally taking over a company together with their planes with routes would have been the much easier way because of over thank you very much and on to boeing
5:22 pm
as far as canada and the u.s. goes it looks like a bit of a trade war has broken out there are reports canada's dropped plans to buy eighteen fighter jets from boeing a very trade dispute with the u.s. the deal would have been worth well over five billion dollars and was part of an upgrade of its entire fleet but it collapsed after the u.s. imposed duties of three hundred percent on c. series jets made by canada's biggest plane make a bomb bunty the company accused of dumping airliners on the american market both countries a lot increasingly difficult talks over the north american free trade agreement. let's go over to our financial correspondent who's standing by in frankfurt daniel colp daniel does this amount to a trade war. damage or it really sounds like a trade war ben just imagine you go to your car dealer and you want to buy a car from another country and at the end you have to pay three hundred percent
5:23 pm
more i mean many people also yet the trading floor really call this ridiculous and it really seems that many countries are getting more and more annoyed off this latest protectionism by the u.s. government and what do you think this is going to go how do you think trump is going to react is it going to escalate. well investors do feel that there needs to be sort of an escalation and at the end there also needs to be an agreement because who's winning now for example in this case with those fighter jets now australia is going to get the job not canada also not boeing and i mean buoying also a company in the united states also because of those very high tears that has been really struggling during the last weeks and months now airbus is again clearly the number one in the airplane business and there are just so many examples were traders and investors are really saying that there needs to be sort of agreement
5:24 pm
because at the end this is also going to harm the u.s. economy ok back to that struggle in a moment with you daniel stay where you are because i want to ask you about this next story three of the world's top economic powers the u.s. the u.n. japan joining forces to combat market to starting trade practices the group signing a declaration at the world trade organization conference in one sirees it doesn't openly target any specific country but it does focus on state owned enterprises and government subsidies both of which are central features of china's economic system china's steel and aluminum industries are heavily subsidized cheap chinese goods have been flooding global markets posing a risk to jobs elsewhere. you'll tell me is this declaration the result of just a lot of talk we don't actually see any action. well i mean this is always the question how much power the w.t.
5:25 pm
organisation actually has because in some cases it can really bring something just yesterday this agreement between those who are left in american countries and the european union was signed but in other cases it's a really long process and you can really feel that. doesn't have that much influence because at the end it's an organisation it's not illegal body that can tell for example to the united states will you have to come to an agreement for example regarding the nafta agreement so it's it's a body that can give for a commendation but at the end also with limited power what does that say briefly about its reputation trumpet said time and again that it's a disaster. well i mean in general w t o has a very good image it was founded in one nine hundred ninety five base in geneva but also i mean you just mentioned those this ongoing dispute also with china when it comes to the surplus production office steel w t o has said so many times so china
5:26 pm
